On December 25, 1945, the Sodder family home in Fayetteville, West Virginia, burned to the ground. George Sodder and Jennie Sodder escaped with four of their children, but five others—Maurice Sodder, Martha Sodder, Louis Sodder, Jennie Sodder, and Betty Sodder—were believed to be trapped inside.

When firefighters searched the ashes, however, they found no human remains. Professional fire investigator Dale Reisen explains why the conditions inside a 1945 house fire should not have been capable of completely destroying five human skeletons.

So, if the five Sodder children were not in the ashes, where were they?
