Investigators have spent more than five decades trying to solve Joyce Leage's murder. Today, I think there are seven
theories that we have been exploring. This is the sixth one. Steve Sullie. At first glance, Steve Sullie doesn't seem
like the obvious suspect. He wasn't Joyce's roommate. He wasn't the guy taking her to the dance. He wasn't even
working near Stevens Hall. He was a fellow student. And according to Joyce's own letters, he was somebody who had
befriended her that summer because he was working on some kind of like project in this communications class where they
were filming commercials or like like a television project. And because there weren't enough women in the class, Joyce
joined for like one more credit and joked that all she really did was goof off in front of the camera. Now, police
first encountered Steve because he voluntarily turned over Joyce's typewriter after she disappeared. and he
explained that Joyce had been helping him type assignments and she left it at his apartment and that seemed
reasonable. But then investigators started finding other pieces that didn't really fit as neatly. A witness told
police that just a few days before Joyce disappeared, she saw Joyce talking with
Steve at the student union. And after Steve left, Joyce appeared visibly upset. And when asked what was wrong,
Joyce reportedly said that she had received a letter from a man that she knew who was coming to visit, but she
refused to say who it was. And investigators uncover something else. Joyce's roommate, Bruce, told police
that Steve and Joyce had actually dated during their sophomore year. Then after Joyce disappeared, Steve suddenly
withdrew from Washington State University and moved back to New York before the semester ended. Now, years
later, when investigators finally interviewed him again, Steve said that he hadn't quit because of Joyce, he said
that he had simply run out of money. He denied dating Joyce, explained why he had her typewriter, and agreed to take a
polygraph. And according to investigators, he passed. Today, Steve has never been charged or publicly
identified even as a suspect. But there are still questions that linger. Now, those are the six theories that we
discussed in the episode. But since you're clearly deeply invested, I'll tell you about the seventh one that
we're still looking

Steve Saulle wasn't the most obvious person investigators examined in Joyce LePage's murder. But witness statements, Joyce's own letters, and several unanswered questions kept his name in the case file.

Steve later spoke with investigators, denied any involvement, and passed a polygraph. He has never been charged or publicly identified as a suspect.

These are the six investigative theories explored in our Crime Junkie investigation. But there may be one more possibility we're still examining.
