55 years later, detectives still haven't solved the question of who killed Joyce
Lepage, but there are seven theories. This is theory number four. The meditation group. What if Joyce Lepage
wasn't killed by somebody she barely knew, but by somebody she was about to move in with? One thing that surprised
me while reading about Joyce's case was realizing that her abandoned car wasn't just parked near random strangers. It
was parked just a few houses away from the people that she planned to live with. Joyce had become involved with the
Student International Meditation Society. And through that group, she became friends with Mike and Celeste
Lindberg and their roommate Mark Wadleigh. Now, she was even planning to move into their house that fall. When
police interviewed Mark after Joyce disappeared, he admitted that he noticed her car parked nearby. It had been there
for like a week, and he claimed that he didn't realize that Joyce herself was missing. Then investigators polygraphed
both Mark and Mike, and the results are interesting. Mike largely passed, but the answer to
one question bothered examiners. When asked whether he thought Mark knew anything about Joyce's disappearance,
his response changed enough that investigators noted it in their report. Now, Mark also mostly passed the
polygraph, except he reacted strongly when asked whether he knew if Joyce was still alive. The examiner specifically
recommended not to eliminate him yet. Then investigators found something almost hidden inside one of Joyce's own
letters. Joyce casually wrote that she had recently learned Mark had once been hospitalized after trying to strangle
people. She also mentioned hearing that he had been involved in a major drug investigation. Investigators never
appear to really dig into those claims, but it's possible that Joyce was beginning to learn something.

Joyce LePage was planning to move in with friends she met through the Student International Meditation Society.

After her disappearance, investigators interviewed members of the group, administered polygraphs, and uncovered statements in one of Joyce's letters that raised new questions.
