By the summer of 2005, investigators believed they had a strong case against Niagara County corrections officer Roger Hueber, who was accused of sexually abusing minors. Their most important witness was Sheryl Rucci, who had agreed to cooperate with investigators and testify before a grand jury in exchange for a plea agreement.

But just weeks before she was scheduled to testify, Sheryl disappeared.

Investigators found her purse still inside her apartment and her shoes neatly placed by the front door. She had no driver's license, no credit cards, and no cell phone with her. She also left behind the daughter her family says she adored.
