fire a wall of flame shot down the hallway from the left to the right and was the loudest thing I'd ever heard one
of the last ones I think to come in was Wayne mtin and he had a gas mask on and he he kind of put his back up against
the wall and took the gas mask off and just slid down into a sitting position on the floor and of course everybody's
looking to him wondering if he's got any latest wood from David or instructions or you know and they're saying what do
we do Wayne he says you better just pray it was not Our intention that this compound be burned down I I can't tell
you the shock and the horror that all of us felt it was oh my God they're killing
themselves those children are dead because David Kish had them killed there's no question about that he had
those fires started he chose those children to die we didn't have anything to do with their deaths
[Music] [Music] the most Vivid memories I have my brother is the music and the preaching that he taught
from the Bible but he'd always start his sessions or his meetings out studies with
[Music] music frantically watching he said it was his drug it's the way he expressed
himself I've had my fun if I don't get well no [Music] more I should have had my
fun if I never get well no more I said my head is feeling kind of funny L and I'm going down slow
somebody please my [Music] mother tell her the shape I'm [Music] in Lord somebody
[Music] please I looked up to the guy as a teacher and as a friend and as a guitarist you know but at the same time
he didn't want to be deified he says you not ever bow down to me cuzz I'm the flesh just like you people are and if
you think you know that God has given me wisdom that's fine but I'm like a Dixie
cup and once my message is over I'm just to be thrown away like everything else even in his darkest prophecies Kesh
could not have dream just how disposable his life would [Music] become David Kesh was born Vernon Howell
in 1959 in Houston Texas his mother Bonnie Clark gave birth to him when she was just 15 years
old his father Bobby Howell never married Bonnie and took no responsibility for raising their
son by all accounts Kesh had a lonely and painful [Music] childhood I did marry a guy after when
David was about two years old and this guy had he just gotten out of prison as a matter of fact I just met him I met I
married him on the rebound uh I'd go out and work and he kept David he had a very high temper he
told this one story once where uh he had a toy truck and he he push it across the
room and it landed on the um on the furnace you know the furnaces in the floor and it melted the wheels he put
David's feet on the furnace you know they had the floor furnaces and it was hot and he burned his feet he was upset
he had lost his truck and now this guy comes along and burns his feet you know I mean it was it was an accident and it
just things things like this experiences like this that he would bring out to show
[Music] Humanity when David turned five Bonnie married Roy holdeman and gave birth to
Roger David was struggling in school and was finally placed in a program for learning disabled children
kids used to call them the [ __ ] kids you know because they was in a different part of the school and they had recess
at different times so he did have to grow up with certain negativity in his life as far as people calling him
certain things and he'd never be nothing or goofball and I'm not going to say who
said these things but it was somebody very close and and it really had a an effect on him David became something of
a loner as a teenager he'd spend hours listening to radio preachers during these early years his
family lived in a succession of small towns from Dallas to East Texas and David always made his way to Bible
studies at the local 7th Day Adventist Church I was totally opposite they say he's the I'm the
really the black sheep I was always out for the party the fast lane you know he was in a different calling him
and Roger was different was night and day but he loved Church he loved going to church I've seen him pray for come
back 12 20 hours later he still in the same spot walk out in the woods and not come back two or 3 days pray all night
and day in [Music] graveyards in the midst of his spiritual Quest 19-year-old Kesh experienced a
trauma that shook his faith his 15-year-old girlfriend Linda had become pregnant and her father forbid them to
see each other he was going to the church in Tyler and he asked the elders what should I do after she had the baby uh
I'd like to be responsible for it should I go to court to claim my rights as a father and the Elders of the church
advised him not to he was very unhappy searching and nobody at the church would give him the answers he needed they
didn't want to listen to him but there was a church member there that befriended David and David asked one day
say where are the prophets where are the prophets and she says well I know where
there's supposed to be a prophet in wo wo [Music] Texas a small group of 20 Branch
dividian 7th Day Adventists had been living outside wo for over two decades when koresh moved there in 1983
at the time David came to mount carel Lois Rhoden was the leader and we accepted her as a prophet her main uh
message that she felt she had was the femininity of the holy spirit this caught David's attention so that he kept
continually coming back and eventually moving onto Mount carel and living here he began uh in 1983 to present things to
her that he thought he was learning from the scriptures or he thought God was showing him she was pretty impressed
with uh what he was telling her to the point where I think around September she basically turned the pulpit over to him
as a result of that everybody accepted David as a prophet everyone that is except Lois rhoden's son
George angry that this young upstart was taking over the pulpit he felt was rightfully his Rhoden challenged Kesh to
prove his legitimacy in the ensuing power struggle the two got into a a gunfight Kesh was charged with attempted
murder but a Texas jury failed to find him guilty it was the only time Kesh was arrested Rhoden was soon confined to a
state mental hospital Kesh wrote this song about Roden but nearly a decade later the
lyrics would come back to haunt him when the government turned the tables and called him the
[Music] madman this time when Christ reveals himself is going to be according to the
book because there's some statements in there that might make you a little bit happy when David started in religion
started going to these churches he got real fanatic hyped up all excited and preached and preached and preached Lord
I have preached righteousness in the great congregation what's he going to preach with cresh's stronghold on the
commune in wo now firmly in place he began traveling internationally recruiting people in places like clubs
pool halls and record stores in the mid to late 80s Kesh spent time in California on a visit to the Guitar
Center in Los Angeles he met David Tibido who was jamming on some drums Steve Schneider approached me he
says wow you know you really good drum are you looking for a band I said well you know I'm I'm looking to play with
different people and he says okay and he hands me a card and he says we'd like to
you know get together and play some music this is David Kush he's a guitarist my name is Steve Schneider I'm
the business manager and I looked at their card and said like Cyrus Productions on the front and on the back
it had all this religious scripture and I remember handing the car back and saying to him well yeah I'm not really
looking to get into Christian band you know I think in the back of my mind I was thinking well this is California
last thing I want to do is get involved in any cult right David said U music is the way to get to the young
kids with the with the message uh um about Jesus you know music's the way to do it Jamie what was the song
that y'all used to do in the heavy metal band go ahead hit it on your face now it's time to face it's time toship God
on your for some reason I ended up calling him a couple days later I just that meeting kept coming up in my mind I
really felt that I should call him and uh at least play some music with him Tibido eventually came to live at Mount
Carmel and was one of only nine people to survive the fiery end you know I really I kind of I I was the world the
word follower I mean I never felt like a person that needed to follow anybody um
from my perspective I wanted to be here I wanted to know this stuff and there was a Structure inside Mount Carmel you
know there was rules that we live by and if you want to know this you have to obey the rules I don't have a problem
with that well some people were very educated had money they gave up nicest things of
the world to come live in that dump I I hate saying that but it's the way it was it was very hard to live
there but it was a training it was an experience he said I want you here for one reason to learn not anything else
wait on me to the day that I Rise up to the pre we're hunting for my determinations to what but I may pour
upon him my Fierce indignation kesh's intensity engendered passionate loyalty from many at Mount Carmel but others saw
a darker side to his leadership I basically got hooked I guess Lisa and Bruce jent were among a small
group of disaffected devidians who participated in an expose of David Kesh produced for Australian television in
1993 he pushed the right buttons with each and every one of us each person has got their own butt and their own
Achilles heel and he was able to to to turn that light on they had a powerful reason for turning to the media their
two teenagers Peter and Nicole decided to stay with KES it was a fateful decision he was all musly done
bodybuilding he had was wearing a t-shirt with C he was there to influence Nicole and and he he admitted that too
and he turned Peter's head around completely and he pushed all the right buttons with Peter and Peter said yeah
man I can see that yeah he was definitely a leader I guess he was a cold leader brainwashing
sure it's truth with facts there's a difference one of the first studies cres ever gave when I first came
out here is he he had a Bible and he said when I see the scripture I see it from Genesis to re Revelation
panoramically as if it's happening right now it was almost like he had lived it like he had been there like he had seen
it like he absolutely knew what it meant he was saying that he was there right through the whole history of the Bible
basically saying I think that he was trying to prove that he was um the the Holy Spirit another follower who left
the church was Robin buns a California teenager whose family joined the commune in 1983 when she was 13 he believes that
he is Jesus Christ come back by the time Robin left Waco 7 years later she had borne kesh's son soon thereafter she
turned on Kesh and sued him for custody of their son Shawn the first thing he really could remember of him was the
fact that this man spanks me he hurts me that's considered child abuse she says that I spanked
him whoa whoa you better ask her again who spanked him till his bottom bled they say David beat kids David did not
beat kids David believed in discipline I do not beat children spank I have yes I
spank children I spank my children when they do wrong I observed how he disciplined his kid he started him very
young but the way he did it was very professional he was always done in a loving Manner and explaining manner they
they knew what they were in trouble for it was never out of anger my daddy you know what he used to do to me when I
used to act up when I had a bad report card can you imagine we got our Tails wed having my tail
wed I told myself as a young man when I grow up I'm going to do it different and
I do it different The Gents and other former followers hired a private investigator who alerted Texas officials
to charges of child abuse at Mount Carmel although the charges could not be substantiated it was the beginning of a
series of events that would put Kesh on a collision course with authorities all of my
life I fell in love with AED in 1985 David Kesh had a revelation that would shock his congregation and
put their faith to the test he told them that the men in his flock including married men had to become celibate to
commit themselves fully to the message only he could have sex with the women of the community who would become his wives
and bear his children I interviewed his wife wies in in California and Hawaii and the families of the wives in
Australia and New Zealand and everywhere I could find he had one purpose and that
was to live his book of Revelation and make 24 babies and that was his whole purpose sex was for no other purpose for
him and there was no Minaj of nothing he just just take him because he wanted them but these kids didn't come about
just because he was a con or I had a smooth talker is because the word and what he preached who is worthy to open
this book and to loose the seals thereof David's exclusive Haram was difficult for many at Mount Carmel to accept but
it was especially painful for his wife Rachel who was pregnant with their second child they had married when David
was 24 and she was 14 she's a young girl married and she had a battle with it spiritually but she
she was in her room praying about it and uh but she accepted it people say you've
been sleeping with the women here is that true no only one and she's tired of it
now I mean she's tired of the accusations publicly Kesh denied he had multiple wives privately he admitted he
was struggling with this particular word from God he knew it would cause upheaval
desertion and outrage David said all along is the first one that has to accept a message from God is the
messenger he has to make up his mind this is God not the devil talking to me this voice I've been following for all
these years I I believe was God and you finally have to come to the con it's the
same voice even though it's telling me to do something that's contrary to the law it's contrary to public opinion it's
contrary to my own feelings uh what the heck's my wife going to say when she finds out all this kind of stuff uh he
has to deal with it and make up his mind to do it and that's what God on him for
when God spoke he he obeyed so how's God going to talk to me in the latter days and who's going to bring that book so
there'll be no excuses I said another man's man's he had a pretty good spread from
14 to 40 and uh isn't any different than most of the Mormons out in northern Arizona and in Utah today and the
thousand thousands of families like that all I can say is that David did what God
told him to do his belief of what God told him to do and I accept that polygamy sex with minors and allegations
of child abuse troubled authorities but they lacked enough evidence to make an arrest one of the dividian business
activities finally gave them all the ammunition they needed to go after Kesh soon he would find himself Sur
rounded he had a goodly number of guns there's no question about that the report I heard was that he was
stockpiling them figuring correctly that certain types of assault rifles would be
banned and correctly that the prices would shoot up you know what the public thinks about guns you know in this
country right now legislation is to band all guns right and it makes nobody's business
whether we have a gun or not at this place guns are the right of Americans to have biblically uh we saw in in the
prophecies that God's people were going to have to fight and that the enemy the devil and people inspired by the devil
would make war on God's people and overcome them and kill them and all this so all I can say is that you know most
people in this country have guns a lot of people say he's got guns that makes him bad that makes him a cult you know
it's just a raw deal in this touchy subject we're dealing with they were selling guns out here guns are a way of
life in Texas if you want to go to gun shows it's a good way to make a living is trading in Firearms it was a good way
to take care of a church and feed people in a land that accepts it there's no indication anyway that he
was trying to fight the government or that he was a mad man authorities were not taking any
chances Agents from the federal bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms the ATF went undercover moving into a house 300
yard from the commune their goal to gather enough evidence to get a search warrant that would ultimately lead to
the arrest of David Kesh he knew he knew when the agents moved in across the street the day they moved in who they
were the way they did it I mean anybody in the world would have known they could
have come in and brought Sheriff horwell anytime and serve David with a warrant Sheriff Harwell come out several times
the child protective services come out David come on in I'll show you around he jogged he went to the music stores he
went to the restaurants he drove in and out by his so don't tell me that bunch of garbage that they could not serve him
with a warrant baloney I mean the entire rationale for the gigantic paramilitary
raid was that caresh never came out of the building therefore could not be arrested peacefully the fact of the
matter is that 9 days before before the big raid uh he went shooting with the ATF agents I mean I got the report
through the Freedom of Information Act agent Rodriguez and two other agents went over to his house knocked on the
door he saw their rifles and he brought down a bunch of ammunition and the three
of them went out in the open ground behind the building and shot for a while an agent Rodriguez handed David kesh's
gun Rodriguez's gun and let David caresh shoot it and David KES liked it and gave
it back to him so what's behind all this that's what I want to know they could have gotten
David anytime never dreamed that my government would come in and cattle tanks trailers disguised
like they did and raid Mount Carmel that morning practice for 6 weeks at Fort Hood to do this why he' always said in
years before that people you better get ready because these these things were going to happen that eventually the
government was going to come for him for what he taught and what he believed in in February
1993 ATF agents convinced a federal magistrate that there was evidence that the branch devidians were amassing a
huge Arsenal they claimed Kesh was a dangerous man who needed to be taken by force a tactic that would soon prove
disastrous February 28th 1993 one of the deadliest days in US law enforcement history began on a quiet
Sunday morning on the plains outside wo Texas who is worthy to open this book and to loose the seals thereof on the
way to their ritual Bible study Kesha's brother-in-law is stopped outside the compound and warned that a raid is about
to go down at the same moment undercover ATF agent Robert Rodriguez is inside the
church with Kesh according to agent Rodriguez's testimony Kesh gets the call that the ATF is on
the way Kesh knows Robert Rodriguez is an undercover agent what does he do does he
knock him on the head hold him as a hostage no he shakes his hand and says good luck Robert and lets him walk out
of the door so I remember I'm here in the helicopters I know something's about to
happen when David came downstairs you know there was a group of people with him and
he said they're coming they're on their way don't anybody do anything stupid we want to talk to them we want to work it
[Music] out what happened next depends on whom you believe these are the facts for atfh
Ag and three branch dividion lost their lives in what would come to be seen as one of the most questionable raids by
government agents against American citizens people at the front door all have the same story they all said the
exact same thing that when David went to the door he had the door in his hand he
had this arm out he said hold on there's women and children here let's talk about
this the were coming in screaming some of the agents fired at the dogs to kill the dogs another agent
apparent ly shot at the door and the door flew back in his hand from the bullet hitting it he slammed the door
and fell back and that's when some of the guys returned fire hello hello yeah this Lieutenant Lynch may help you yeah
there 75 men around our building and they're shooting at us at Mount Carmel Mount Carmel yeah tell them they're
children and women in here and to call it off for 45 minutes Wayne Martin tried to get them to stop shooting at us hello
call it off who is this Wayne matter listen calm down and talk to me for a minute okay who is
this Wayne Wayne Wayne was like yelling from a distance to the phone because he said he was afraid if they he got near
the windows they would shoot him I'm under Fire and they think he was out of control because the way his voice
sounded he was trying to save his life and the lives of others chopper with more people and more guns going off here
they come all right why more firing I that's not us that's them okay tell them to call it off he repeatedly
begs this is the reaction of not of a man who's trying to Ambush some It's the reaction of a guy who's scared
right all right hold on just a minute Wayne no I have not and and uh nobody's responding to the damn
radio somebody needs to call me quickly down here at uh at dispatch the ATF they
could go out and they could have the satellite dishes they could have the camera Crews ready but they didn't have
any communication with the sheriff's department they didn't have any communication with their ground people
what are these people are these people professionals I have a right to defend myself and started firing first okay
well let's resolve it let's not let's resolve the issue of who fired first is important the ATF has never changed its
story they shot first and if I thought that an ATF agent would drive up in front of a structure and shoot I'd throw
my badge in the garbage it didn't happen the proof is the soundtrack on the second helicopter filming the first
helicopter as it comes over the building you hear 17 gunshots I got down on my knees and I looked at the trajectory and
it came from a spot between the two towers only could only have been fired from the air at this point you can prove
that the helicopters fired first killing three people that isn't serving a search
warrant that is murder among those was killed by ATF gunfire was 24-year-old Australian Peter
jent shot in the chest while working on the church's water tower he was unarmed problem we had um I don't
believe is that we were outmaneuvered or outplanned the problem we had is that we
were outgunned you know they had bigger Firearms than we had they were able to shoot through doors the ATF kept
insisting that it was an ambush that there was a conspiracy to kill them and that we were waiting at 40 different
positions with fully automatic weapons and we were shooting at them if that's true not one of those agents would have
walked off those cattle trailers the spin on the story portrayed Kesh as a mad Messiah a cultist a threat to his
followers David Kesh was dangerous irrational and probably insane he engaged in numerous activities
which violated both federal law and common standards of decency I don't view David KES as mad at all that was
streamed up by the government at the time this happened to try to demonize David KES and all the people who were in
Mount Carmel complex by the end of the day a ceasefire would be arranged and the FBI
would take control from the ATF the government was quickly putting into place a deadly heavily armed force of
Agents against an increasingly isolated David Kesh March 1993 a riveting drama is playing out on
American television narrated by the FBI it's the tale of cult leader David kures
holed up with more than 100 followers in a heavily armed Fortress refusing to surrender we have sufficient Firepower
if we chose to completely neutralize this situation at any moment we did not choose to do that day three of the FBI
Siege on Mount Carmel cores and the FBI negotiate a plan I David Kesh agree upon the
broadcasting of this tape to come out peacefully with all the people immediately later that day kist people
all prepared to leave but as they approached the front door Kesh stopped them he was worried and we were worried
he would just go to jail somehow meet with the mysterious accident and then the truth would never be out after the
third day of course David said that God told him to wait and the FBI of course people made fun of this you know well he
doesn't want to come out he has no plans on coming out he's a con man the FBI started uh down a path first
they tried conciliatory measures then when they felt the conciliatory measures weren't working
they started uh playing loud music they started playing rabbits being killed rabbits it turns out scream when they're
being killed they turned off the electricity so there'd be no heat inside and there would be no running water all
this they were doing despite the fact that there were children in the place we thought that their instincts uh the
motherly instincts would would take place and that they would want their children out of that environment it
appears they don't care that much about their children which is unfortunate under pressure
Kesh began releasing a couple of children at a time our song Mad Men and Waco right this is for the little
children right God knows how it should be Stars and Stripes of flying give us Justice and liberty for the children's
sake I think that David was trying to show both sides that I don't distrust you as much as you distrusted us with
pressure mounting on both sides the FBI attempted another desperate measure they
tried to negotiate with David's 7-year-old son this is a recording of Jim Kavanagh talking to my grandson
Cyrus during The Siege Kevin no he's not here right now oh they Mark no they came out and we
gave them some coke and candy and they got a ride in that tank and they really thought it was neat they said it was
bumpy though the negotiators are trying to find out when they're going to send some
more kids out so they're asking Rachel and they're asking Cyrus when they're going to come out and trying to tell
them how neat it is to ride in the tanks you know and and all that kind of stuff
you got to tell your mom you want to come out and see Jim and ride in the tank I'll call that tank and have him
waiting for you are we going to be able to get go to our grandma uh well we'll try we rather want to be with our
grandma than with some we don't know say Jim Kavanagh if when they all come out they don't want to
go to be with strangers can they be with their grandma and he said who is your grandma this is Grandma
[Music] Bonnie I got no word from any of them while they were in there so this tap
meant so much to me 6 weeks into the siege as their efforts to negotiate stalled the FBI's
patience began to wear thin time for a peaceful end was running out unless David Kish agrees to surrender we will
turn up the heat day 46 Kesh said he was prepared to come out he said God told him to write down his interpretation of
the Seven Seals the heart of his message and when he'd finished he'd surrender with his entire flock it was his
security blanket it was his Credence to the world that this was a real valid message and not just a bunch of
religious Fanatics shooting off at the hip so when he started to write it down it was very serious I think it was the
Paramount most important thing in his life after while as it turned out from what we can tell in the records and from
my conversations the Tactical people started to act independently it seemed like during the negotiations every time
things were harmonious every time things people were coming out the FBI would do
something tactical to step up the efforts to make sure that the negotiations did not work out but part
of it was the law Force mentality of we have to do something we got to be active
we got to show these people who [Music] boss I was there for most of the siege with his
grandmother Jean Hollow begging the FBI to let us go in and talk to David Kesh and do our best to bring him out they
refused that assistance they went to the attorney general and said should we put
in the Cs gas and as one of the agents said to me at that point the FBI thought they had three options gas gas and
gas I became convinced that short of allowing David Kish to go free he was not coming out
voluntarily by tear gassing the compound which I had determined by after very careful review would not be permanently
harmful to the children that would be the best way to proceed to increase the pressure to try to force them

I saw him and he said um he said now we're the tanks run over the cords we're trying to establish uh Communications
with them so we can you know they'll see that we're not coming out no matter what
they do when they went upstairs and I never saw him again according to the coroner's report Kesh died of a gunshot
wound to the Head it was not Our intention that this compound be burned down I I can't tell you the shock and

of me out there on that Hill amongst all the trees and amongst the place where they used to walk and play and run
where you try to remember how you saw them how you remember them the faces their smiles try to remember the times
that you out out them you don't want to think of them burning up in their bodies
being in the shape that they found them in this is the ultimate most Paramount purpose of my life is to let you know
that the people in there did not commit suicide that the people there were [Music]
murdered the root CA cause of this problem was that it was considered a military operation and it wasn't 7 years
after the Flames at Mount Carmel killed David Kesh and his supporters former Senator John Danforth is appointed by an
embarrassed Janet Reno to re-examine what happened at Waco the first question is was there a cover
up and the second question is did federal officials kill people What are Delta Force people doing in the Heart of
Texas you know on the Prairie here uh with an FBI force of about 700 people uh advising them about what you
do in a little situation like this that's pretty far out isn't it according to the infrared videos we have
fully automatic weapons fire people trying to leave and they're being shot down you know I mean this is evidence we
have expl at the back of the building why do you think they wouldn't let the media back there it's time for people to
wake up and demand that our government gets to the bottom of this and demand that they're held responsible you you
can say it was an accident you can say it was a file up a screw up a debacle but if you look at it in substance to
the evidence in the acts it's murder I got a motorc one piece of evidence is a videotape made by the devidians during
The Siege and sent to the FBI with a request that it be broadcast so the world could better understand Kesh and
his congregation the tape was not released until after the tragedy in fact the FBI
suppressed this tape and has reluctantly given it to the attorneys representing the survivors and their
families it shows scores of dividian young and old laughing and serious stating that they are inside the church
of their own free will do you want to leave here no I don't I don't want to leave here I'm I feel quite safe here
there's no reason for me to leave is someone holding you here against your will no nobody's holding me against my
will Mom I know you don't understand this and I know you're going to be heartbroken but please you always told
me not to judge and that's what I want to say in the end you will understand everything anything else
Nikki I'm the kind of guy that I'll stand in front of a tank you can run over me
but I'll be biting one of the tracks no one's going to hurt me or my family that's that's that's that's American
