Lake Orion Michigan just outside Detroit October 4 1999 Gale Fulton the town librarian was closing gales a smiling
easygoing woman and has no way of knowing that assassins are waiting for her in the parking lot she walked around
to the back of the van towards the passenger side rear where the tire was cut to look at the tire and at that
point I was getting out of the car that she got there I got out with my shot her
I shot four shots he was wearing black jeans black boots black jacket and Kevin liked I think this notion of him being
this hard hit mankind you know dressed all in black and he's gonna he's gonna take this woman out detectives were left
with Gail's dead body and a mystery who would want to shoot the librarian we believe that she was targeted and it was
not a random act nor was it a robbery at this point by the time this investigation was over police discovered
a sordid sex scandal involving the husband of the dead woman and a mysterious redheaded nurse from Florida
three hired killers plotted the murder during a sex and drugs auto adventure from the Gulf Coast of Florida to Lake
Michigan and in the end the family and the community lost its innocence [Music] [Music]
[Music] at first when police worked over the Gayle Fulton crime scene there was only
evidence that she was shot at close range and the killer fled but a library surveillance camera had recorded the
killing we interviewed all the employees that she worked with late into the night
last night as we well as several family members and it's all a process of elimination at this point and once we
eliminate two people that are closest then we can try and focus in on any suspects that may develop so who would
want to kill gale he was very active with the schools very proud of her children
they were quite accomplished and loved to do things for people Gail's husband George was a traveling
salesman they had three grown children from the surface they seemed to be a pretty
typical suburban family and George was a military man a graduate from West Point
Gale had a degree in speech pathology but had decided to stay home and raise these children
Gail Fulton was a tremendous lead religious person who devoted her life to her husband and her children and they
were the center of her world and everything that she did revolved around them it seems like a very very nice
family very happy but somebody wanted Gail dead the first suspect was Gail's husband George who had the very moment
his wife had been shot was talking on the telephone with a woman from Florida named Donna Trapani Donna had been
Gail's rival and George's lover now went to the police station that night after my wife was shot I told him about Donna
and that I've had an affair and I was talking to this one because I was doing her medical claims for her company and
therefore I was talking business with her and it just looked suspicious that I was talking to this woman that I'd had
an affair with when my wife had been shot and they thought I had snuck out of the house and done it and passed my son
and gone out of the garage and driven over there shot my wife and gotten back to my house without my son see me an
opening and closing the garage door twice he's offered a polygraph in regards to his involvement and I he
passed the polygraph and was thus eliminated as a suspect the surveillance tape had been analyzed
it was vital evidence the video examined frame by frame the police identified the
moment of the kill the videotape provide us with the information of possibly three people you
can see that the shooter get out the rear seat someone had to be driving and there looked like a figure in the
passenger's front seat three people one dead librarian no robbery no notes the mystery deepened oh sure I couldn't
believe it because I mean like we're in a small town we live just right down the
road I never think something like this happens everybody has the same reaction I can't believe this happened so close
to home I hope they find out whoever did it or whatever and put him away crazy people anymore I can't trust
anybody while the Michigan police continued their probe a telephone tip came to them
from Florida a tip that would change lives the main break was when a Brian Miller
called our hotline our tip line saying he had information regarding the homicide he was interviewed over the
phone and provided or provided us with detailed information of who was involved and that really broke the case wide open
for us [Music] the call had come from over 1,000 miles away from defu niak Springs Florida it
was a small community near Fort Walton Beach a resort on what the locals like to call the redneck Riviera a fisherman
Brian Miller had made the call he said he had a story to tell about a woman named Sybil Padgett said what brought me
in the back bedroom and told me that they had come up here and done it tell me that they had cut her tires or a tire
and she came out a library to leave and started to drive off and realize she had
a flat tire and pulled back into the library and was gonna walk back in the library and that they had pulled up
somewhere near her and I know his name to be Kevin now that Kevin had jumped out the car shot her in the face
mr. Miller basically disclosed that he had conversations with a woman although he wouldn't give it her name at first
saying that she had something to do with the homicide and Link Orion within the next day or so
the Sheriff's Department organized a group to go down to D Funi AK Springs to begin the investigation moving quickly a
task force of Michigan detectives and FBI agents would set up shop in Fort Walton Florida the people that live in
Walton and Okaloosa County are basically good people church-going people and you
don't see this kind of thing happened with those families and people the FBI and Florida police moved into a command
post in the beachfront Ramada Inn the Ramada headquarters soon turned into an interrogation center where officials
brought in Sybil Padgett for what she thought was an informal chat it was decided it'd be to bring her back to the
hotel to get her comfortable not not take her to the police station where she'd become defensive
she wasn't placed under arrest she was advised of that and they put her in the hotel room for a comfortable feeling and
thus let her guard down and so that she'd want to talk to us while the detectives loved easy
questions at her a local cop was on his way to search Sybil's house we developed
information in doing our investigation here in Walton County that items of evidence might still be in the house
that civil Padgett was living in we developed enough information to obtain a search warrant for that residence and in
fact serve the search warrant and did find several items of evidence the two key items that were found in the
residence one was a photograph of the victim also with that photograph was a handwritten note outlining Miss Fulton's
lifestyle where she worked times and places descriptions over how to get to her house or just we're just overwhelmed
you know it's a over a month after the homicide and all the seven is still to be in one house it's just like wow I
can't believe they had to keep it wasn't too bright of them to keep all the evidence Paget's boyfriend was
identified as Patrick Alexander and so we started doing an interview with him and he pretty much came clean and stated
that he was involved and he had driven up to Michigan prior scouted out the area and then came up with Kevin all
that he gave us provide us the name of Kevin all that and told us what happened I think there were two leaders there
were Kevin will let was clearly the gunman he was hired to pull the trigger but civil Padgett is the kind of
on-scene supervisor as investigators questioned Alexander and the evidence mounted Sybil Padgett
was getting in deeper finally Padgett began to crack just talk she said but under tough questioning she changed her
story she uttered the name Donna Trapani and blamed Donna for the killer and the
story she told provided the motive the librarian had been shot as an act of passion a contract killing ordered by
Donna Trapani Sybil's boss and spurned lover of the librarians husband Donna's story coming up next
[Music] Slidell Louisiana just a short drive from New Orleans Donna Trapani was raised here by her mother her dad had
skipped before she was born I raised her to be independent so that she didn't have to depend on anybody for a
livelihood when I was growing up we were on the class of saying not very very poor but poor and so I knew what it felt
like not to have Donna was kind of overweight and she had an inferiority complex about being overweight Donna was
determined to change her looks and her life she sought medical help and she shed 40 pounds after she lost all the
weight then the phone was blasting off the walls and the boys were coming to the house and she told him no she had to
study Donna went to Hinds Community College where she joined the drill team she worked hard Donna
eventually saw Nursing as the way towards a better life my first impressions when I met Donna was that
she was a very bright smart nice-looking young lady in the mid-80s she met Charles Trapani an airline
mechanic the two married she worked so much that she didn't have time for herself much less me or anybody else she
was always working 24 hours a day seven days a week I'm a workaholic I don't know my ex told you that or not he says
that that's what caused a lot of our problems was me been so involved with the business and not with him
Donna and Charles moved to Fort Walton Beach Florida where she started an employment agency for homecare nurses
life at the office was never dull Suzy Murphy remembers when a housecleaner angered Donna she cut the wire the camp
cord on the vacuum cleaner and took the vacuum cleaner over to the girl's house and threw it at their door she would
walk into a room and throw things down on the desk Beverly raphson also worked for Donna
and remembers her temper she would slam the drawers of a file cabinet you know there were there were you knew you knew
in no uncertain terms you might not always know why but you knew that she was mad we knew she had this this need
to manipulate us and we weren't gonna let it hurt our friendship but there were times when a lot of us didn't know
that that's what she was doing and she was she stirred things up pretty badly when you own a business it's not really
being manipulative it's called business planning if you have to fire someone you
have to fire them and according to those who knew Donna that was pretty much her
philosophy about marriage in the morning about eighth year anniversary I told a happy anniversary instead of heart
telling me happy anniversary she said she needed her space [Music] and she was going out with the single
unmarried divorced nurses that was working for us and that's one thing that we kind of thought about sometimes
instead a married woman don't go out with single people in October 1997 at a local bar Donna Trapani met George
Fulton a computer designer and traveling salesman she came in there she sat on one side of this u-shaped bar and I was
at the other end and I asked her to dance and then I started talking to her and her friend and at the end of that
night she went with her friend and I went home by myself we both came from poor backgrounds
we're abarth hard-working both had a lot of similar hobbies that we enjoy doing like challenging things and I don't know
just thanks alone that nature was saying but just kind of clear Donna was a very
strong personality could talk her articulate seemed to be a good person I took a trip to Tampa and while I was in
Tampa I got beeped continuously every day by him and then after I got back from Tampa it just it really continued
that he really pursued me the two discussed George starting his own electronic billing business with Donna
as his first client so that the lovers could be together I was doing what he had always dreamed of doing but he had
always wanted to start his own business but she wouldn't let him the she Donna meant was George's wife
there was a lot of things that were building up between Gale and I and the kids and a lot of it was in my head
some of it was real my wife and I later talked about it after I got back from in
Florida but at that time I did something I thought I'd never do which was thinking not seriously about leaving my
wife for another woman I thought I said I'd never do that but I got into that they kept the affair secret for two
years I confronted it with her a lot of times and she would look me square in the eye
and lie and just tell me she didn't know anybody by the name of George we also here in the office thought that George
was divorced because Donna had told us but she could look right square at you and just tell you a bald-faced lie right
out without blinking an eye we swam a lot of swam a lot we went and worked out at the club we went dancing
went out to eat traveled Donna's appealed to him I have no idea that I cannot answer
they seem so diametrically opposed if you contrast Donna with Martha Martha Gail
Martha was classy and educated and attractive and Donna I think had this kind of edge to her that he must have
found attractive he was she was she came from the wrong side of the tracks I guess I think what it might might have
been the attraction for George then George's secret life was finally revealed when he called Michigan late
one night the question came up who's Donna Trapani because it was showing up on the caller ID so it was one of the
daughters who first became aware of this and told them told her mother I was getting pulled in different directions
by my responsibility for my wife and my children and what I felt towards Donna and there was an emotional struggle and
it did not get any better over time there were some allegations that Martha Fulton had threatened suicide a couple
of times when she learned about some of the philandering that was going on with George and you know I don't know how
much the children were aware of those problems you know but it was clearly a very troubled home it was more important
to her to save the marriage in the family than anything and she was willing to work on that despite the fact
that her husband had moved away for the better part of two years and lived with another woman and there was no real
clean break of the relationship between Donna and George finally George made a decision that would result in tragedy he
left Florida in April of 1999 and returned to his wife I knew it was wrong what I was doing I had decided I'd
really didn't want a divorce like I thought initially I thought I needed I wanted a divorce it turned out I didn't
and it certainly wasn't to leave my wife for Donna she and I were not compatible in the
long run we could not have been compatible even though I cared for as a person but Donna was not giving up her
man that easily first she informed George she was pregnant then she claimed to be dying of
cancer and finally she showed up in Michigan Donna kept insisting she was dying and
she was pregnant and what was going to happen is she needed to sell the business and she kept pressuring me to
come and to come and what was I gonna do and I didn't know what to do and finally
she said I need I need an answer I need an answer so she pressured me and I finally accepted and said ok come up the
4th of July weekend and the plan was to spend the weekend together and she was gonna come up here look for a place to
live Gail didn't know she was coming up coming up a face to face showdown between a wild-eyed nurse the Chilton
wife and a tragically mistaken husband the concord motel July 4th weekend 1999 for George Fulton this is no holiday
George has done the unthinkable he has had his girlfriend Donna Trapani come to Michigan for a bizarre meeting with his
wife Martha Gale Fulton I wish this woman would have just thrown him out just you know packed his bags and said
I've had enough and I think most women would have I mean when he brought Donna Trapani - to Michigan to meet Martha
Gale I wonder what what she was thinking and why she didn't say at that point enough it was scary to meet Gail yeah I
actually didn't want to and she didn't really want to meet me either but that was a request he made so we both honored
it George said he was counting on his wife's inner strength to make the meeting work out
we met in there in her hotel room and talked and they met each other and we talked and and then we went to lunch
later and came back to the room and then Donna wanted to talk to Gail by herself
and she says you want to talk to her a woman a woman I do think that he probably was getting not knowing the man
but that he seemed to be getting some sort of odd thrill out of pitting these two women against each other you know
having the meet and that kind of thing at first the meeting was cordial but it got heated when George left the two
women alone to talk Gale didn't want me leaving her myself and I said well I'll just be down the
hall actually downstairs because it was on the second floor and so I let him alone and honestly she need to talk to
y'all for about five minutes and less than that Gail came running out of the room and Donna right behind her and Gail
wanted me to take her home she was very upset Donna said Gail tricked her into revealing details about the affair
particularly a passionate trip taken to New Mexico I I didn't think she knew about New Mexico she made a statement to
me she says well tell me how was that how was New Mexico but when she said that I said oh it was good and then I
realized all of a sudden what I had said and that's when it turned better and angry for her she jumped up and started
screaming and hollering at me she took off running to the door and I got in front of the door and I said I'm sorry I
didn't mean to say that and she goes well how many other lives are there I don't know if he knew that eventually
something would erupt I don't think he anticipated this but I don't know if he saw some kind of trainwreck ahead
Donna insisted that she hadn't said or done anything to her and later after I talked to Gail she said and Donna kept
her restrained her did not allow her to leave the room initially when Gail wanted to leave because Donna was
telling Gail all these things that she knew about me especially about the maid trip to New Mexico and Donna just showed
up at my door and just to hurt Gail in - for scale to turn me away and to kick me
out of the house I think that was not as intent to hurt Gail so a girl would tell
me go and leave don't I don't want you anymore that night George put his wife to bed
and then quietly returned to Donna I started having second thoughts at that time again because I like I've been
having all along because I just didn't know and and and I still believed she was pregnant that simile she was dying
but it just did not feel right so I told Donna I can't do this I cannot do this I
said I'm gonna have to go home I just can't do this I'm sorry and she begged me to stay for about 30 minutes
she said just to stay and she never bothered me again and B one last time and she would go back to Florida and
forget about me but I knew it was a lie because she wouldn't she wouldn't be satisfied with that so I said no I have
to go I said if I stay my marriage is over and so I left he broke off with me okay I didn't break off him he broke up
with me and so I left and went back home and there was no anger you know at the hotel
when I left or anything you know I just accepted it that he didn't want to be a part of mine in the baby's life that was
just the way it was gonna be I told him right then and there don't expect to hear anything because I won't tell you
anything and I do back in Florida the police believe the rejected Donna turned homicidal she called George and left
messages on his phone which would be used against her later with each unreturned call her anger increased
[Music] finally George returned the call the police believe it was the last call I
think it happened the day that George said to her on the phone I'm not coming back down there without without Gail I
think that's when the whole I mean this is about this phony pregnancy and the terminal illness and all of that you
know that's oh that's a woman who is desperate and I think the final straw was this business that he was not going
to come back down to Florida and run her business police say Donna's business was failing
she could not make her payrolls alone angry and scared she dreamed about a plot to kill Gail to punish George
people around her especially her staff noticed the odd behavior if someone crossed Donna or got her upset about
something she would go on a rampage she would curse at them she would yell she would she was very vindictive she would
find ways to to try to hurt that person finally the unsophisticated Donna decided to get her revenge she turned to
another nurse a part-timer Sybil Padgett Donna believed Sybil could find an assassin
late summer 1999 Donna's life is in turmoil her business is failing and she had a miscarriage I feel that you caused
me to lose my baby and my baby was way more important than he was others would later say she faked the
pregnancy she could more easily lie about something than she could to tell the truth
and Donna's eyes the ends always justify the means why did he continually email me write me
letters and send me cards and tell me he still wanted to be a part of her life just for me to hang on a little bit
longer a little bit longer to give him time to work things out you know he just played me back and forth Donna decided
to act she had a deadly plan she called Sybil Padgett a part-time worker Sybil was
very easily intimidated she wouldn't stand up to Donna like some of us would she wouldn't she did whatever Donna
wanted her to do no questions asked Sybil was 38 years old her young lover Patrick Alexander was just 19 they
enjoyed long car rides and romance on the road but they needed money to party Patrick said they were hard up for money
in Donna you know was on their backs wanting them to commit the crime and she'd pay them money to do so and they
decided they're gonna do it for the mine the price was $10,000 Sybil and Patrick
drove to Gail's house they turned the trip into a wild party ride with bouts of lovemaking and drinking as if to
forget the evil deed 20-hour trip and you have all of that time to think about what you're going to do all of that time
to change your mind and that's what they did Patrick said they saw Gale and her kids and could not kill her
so they returned to Florida she was irate start a storm around her house slamming
dishes into the scene she was just violent Donna ordered them back to Michigan this time with a real
triggerman Kevin no let Donna said that she wanted me to kill everybody that came out of the library with her so it
looked like a random thing it didn't look like weird to you know one person was being pinpointed Kevin well that is
the contract killer civil Padgett she is the one who introduced Kevin Willits to
Donna Trapani she is the one who made the orchestrated the original trip to Michigan she is the one who brought
Patrick Alexander into it she is the one who provided the gun the ski mask and the vehicle to get up to Michigan they
all came out of the library all the employees they sat around talking for a minute got into the cars she backed out
of her spot started driving away and I guess that's when she noticed that she had a flat tire and she turned around
drove around the island and pulled back in I told Patrick to you know pull up behind her
he went around the island now as she pulled back in he parked the car right behind right behind the van
she was exiting the van she walked around to the back of the van torqued towards the passenger's side rear where
the tyre was caught to look at the tire at that point I was getting out of the car as she got there I got out and I
shot her I ran back into the back of the car and told Patrick to go the news of the killing shocked Donna's nursing
staff including Beverly Rossum and her husband my husband and I were just talking about our day and he was telling
me who had seen that day and old friends of ours and I told him I said well you know I said I can top anything I can top
anything that you've got because I found out today that George's wife was killed
and he stood up from the dining room table and he looked me straight in the eye and he said I know who did it and I
just couldn't believe I said why do you think you know who did this and he had told me that back in June or July back
in the summer sometime he had been making a delivery and a few niak where Sybil worked and lived and he had
stopped at Sybil's house and just to say hello and he was complaining to her about Donna not paying us and civil told
him that Donna had like 20 thousand dollars that was sitting in a bank somewhere and that she was going to have
George's wife killed coming up next confession arrests and the trial of Donna Trapani
[Music] [Music] when Sybil Padgett confessed detectives had their case made Patrick
Alexander and Kevin olette were arrested then confessed and agreed to testify against Donna Trapani it was absolutely
no reason for me to want Gail dead that was that it didn't even make any sense if I would have wanted her dead
why wouldn't have I done something once I hear July 4th the police were confident they had the mastermind in
Donna Trapani she puts on quite a facade but when you scratch beneath that just a
little bit you realize that it is laden with cracks she sat with an officer and no more than
a foot away from her and disclosed how she was in her I believe I think it was her 11th or 12th month of pregnancy and
then as the interview progressed a cat came into the room and walked across her stomach the cat made a series of
indentations across her stomach and the officer or deputy quickly noted noted this and when she was arrested she was
patted down and searched and removed from her stomach area were three placements and her story was that this
was the love child fathered by George Fulton this is something that she had been claiming for months and months and
months and months and when confronted with this she had no explanation to the officers on December 1st 1999 she was
arrested and charged with conspiracy to commit murder nearly a year later in October Donna went on trial in
Michigan's Oakland County Courthouse the three people who actually drove to Michigan to kill Gail Fulton also
or that Donna had hired them they said she provided a picture of the victim an address of where she worked and a map to
get there can you explain how the man that George gave you when you were up here how they had gotten Sybil's hands
or Patrick hands do you explain that at all that was my mouth that he gave to me to
try to find my way around but I never really even used it but I took it home with me and I had the map at my house
did you give it to anyone in an attempt to aid someone in killing Gale no sir as a matter of fact I said on my dining
room table for a long time like a lot of other paperwork just piled up on me how
about the photograph of Gale did you give that to anyone at all no sir Donna did you do anything at all to
assist anyone in killing Gale no sir but the jury had already heard from the gunman Kevin oh let who said he was sent
to kill Gale by Donna Kevin calmly testified what happened after the shooting Patrick was driving he pulled out of the
library took a left out of the library and he drove down Swartz i-75 to a truck stop near the border we went over to the
payphone and I asked Patrick to age Donna did you speak with Donna yes I did did you tell Donna anything I told her
that I was done she responded anyway she said that she already knew that she was
on the she already got a call from the police they were questioning her about George's whereabouts what do you do next
there I told Donna that would be in a few hours have my money ready and we got in and drove to Donna's house did she
give you any additional money uh yeah she I can't remember exactly it was right around $1000 she gave me then say
anything to you she said something in the reference of you did a good job the paper said it
looked professional Donna is convicted and sentenced to life after the conviction on mr. Bonnie George Fulton
thank the officers and myself for doing our job I would have to imagine that he has mixed feelings about about her this
was a woman that he for some period of time told his deepest darkest secrets to or and and had a tremendous relationship
with and then within a matter of days he discovers or it's disclosed to him that
after his wife is killed that this is the person that killed killed her and I imagine that there is a from from a
psychological standpoint imagine he's gone through tremendous internal battles trying to figure out how he could
involve himself with someone that is willing to not only kill another human being but to plot it and involve other
people George Fulton has to live with what George Fulton did in this case coming up next George Fulton talks about
revenge and his murderous fantasies during the trial Donna Trapani is appealing her murder
conviction and life sentence in the Gayle Fulton case I felt like I'd be found guilty because of the overwhelming
amount of evidence and I didn't feel like I would get a fair trial after the trial she claimed to be a victim set up
by Sybil Padgett Patrick Alexander and Kevin olette who she claims killed Gayle and then attempted to extort money from
her they thought I had money and they were going to try to get money out of me Donna's mother also believes her
daughter was set up I think that Sybil Oh threatened Donna if Donna didn't give them money I think that they were
blackmailing Donna attempting to to blackmail her are they were gonna go up there and do this and implicate her
where she'd go downhill and lose everything she added and it looks like they got their way
both the prosecutors and detectives who broke the case scoffed at the claims what you saw from mrs. Trapani on the
stand was a very very staged event you heard the tape of what she is capable saying on the phone and she's capable of
saying some pretty nasty and ugly things in a very audible tone Donna seems to believe that she's still innocent that
you know she she wasn't involved in you know the realism hasn't hit that she is involved and she's been convicted of
she's cognizant of her audience and she plays to them when it's mr. Fulton she can speak her mind when it's 12 people
that her and decide her fate she's suddenly this little southern belle who can't understand how she got mixed up in
this George Fulton lives alone these days his one-time lover behind bars his wife dead
he says his faith gets him through the night I can't forget but I have to forgive because if God can forgive me I
have to forgive them Elton goes contrary to what we say in church every Sunday about forgiving ourselves as we've been
forgiven and so I had to do that because if I didn't I would hold on to the anger
and the anger is destructive but George admits there was a moment when he sat in
court and considered taking revenge the anger and the rage that was enemy was very real and it scared me because I was
thinking about killing them all and at that courtroom in Rochester Hills there was no security there I could have
gotten what I needed in the right place in the right position and got rid of them all I'm sorry but that's what I was
thinking but I didn't act it out that's the difference I did not act it out I thought it and I talked my way out of it
because I knew it was wrong Donna did you hire anyone to kill Gail no I did not did you want Gail dead the
jury did not believe her and when the sentencing judge Richard Kuhn gave her life without parole he underscored their
verdict this is one of the worst murder cases I ever presided over an innocent woman with three children and a husband
was gunned down this defendant was the ringleader she not only planned and put this crime into motion
she also recruited others to help her thereby ruining even more lives this was a horrible despicable crime the
defendant claims she is not guilty the jury did not believe her and neither do I in fact I believe she is nothing but a
liar as far as this case is concerned the judge looked at George Fulton in the courtroom but said nothing
George's jury will consist of three his children they will ultimately decide what punishment he receives for the
tragic role he played in the love affair that led to their mother's death [Music]
