On May 17, 1980, two young girls, 5-year-old Teresa “Terry” Flores and 4-year-old Martha “Marty” Mezo, vanished in broad daylight from the tiny town of San Miguel, California. It was a warm Saturday morning, and the pair had been walking along Mission Street, just a few blocks from home, when they disappeared without a trace.
Nearly two weeks later, their bodies were discovered beneath a bridge along the Salinas Riverbed on nearby Camp Roberts Army Base, and it was clear that the girls were victims of a brutal double homicide that shocked San Luis Obispo County.
For 45 years, investigators have chased countless leads: from neighborhood suspects and military personnel to convicted predators and even serial killer Henry Lee Lucas. But none of them fit. Now, thanks to new DNA testing and a tenacious detective, Clint Cole, the same investigator who solved the Kristin Smart case, this long-cold case is closer than ever to being solved.
As fresh forensic results emerge, the clock is ticking to find justice before the victims’ last surviving family members are gone.
Join Ashley Flowers and Brit Prawat as they revisit one of California’s most haunting and least-known child abduction cases: a story of two families, a decades-long investigation, and a new push for answers in 2025. If you have information about the murders of Teresa Flores and Martha Mezo, contact Detective Clint Cole at (805) 781-4940 or email ccole@co.slo.ca.us
