On the morning of August 5, 1965, the body of Alberta O. Jones was discovered in the Ohio River near Louisville, Kentucky. Just hours earlier, the 34-year-old attorney had left a friend’s house after a late-night outing. She never made it home.
In this episode, Ashley Flowers and Brit Prawat investigate one of the most mysterious unsolved murders in Kentucky history: a case involving missing evidence, contradictory witness statements, civil rights activism, and questions that have lingered for nearly 60 years.
Alberta O. Jones wasn’t just a lawyer. She was one of the first Black women admitted to the Kentucky Bar, a civil rights leader, a voting rights advocate, and a trailblazing prosecutor who was breaking barriers across Louisville. Then, she was killed.
This deep dive examines Alberta Jones’ final known movements on August 4–5, 1965, the discovery of her abandoned rental car in Louisville, the physical evidence recovered from the vehicle, the missing purse that resurfaced years later under suspicious circumstances, the fingerprints that may have identified a key suspect decades after the murder, and the theories connecting her death to her legal work, civil rights advocacy, and professional relationships.
As investigators dug deeper, they uncovered evidence that mysteriously disappeared, witness accounts that raised more questions than answers, possible connections to powerful individuals, and investigative decisions that Alberta’s family still struggles to understand today.
More than half a century later, no one has been charged, key questions remain unanswered, and Alberta Jones’ family continues to search for justice.
