EMS and Fairfax County police head to the Banfield's home, a large brick front colonial tucked into a quiet cul-de-sac
in the DC suburb of Herndon. They're let in and led upstairs by the family's au pair. She is who called 911 and she
directs them to the main bedroom where they see the bed is stripped with bloody linens on the floor. Two guns are on the
bare mattress and Brendan is kneeling on a towel beside the bed next to his naked
wife, 37-year-old Christine Banfield. He's using his his bare hands to stop the bleeding that's coming from stab
wounds in her neck. And lying atop a dog bed against [music] the bed frame, the officers see the stranger that Brendan
said he shot. >> [music] >> Under the dog bed by his head, they find Christine's underwear ripped at the
crotch and nearby is what's believed to be one of her shirts with a jagged cut down the back. Now, paramedics go to
each person, but the man is already beyond saving. There's still hope for Christine, though. She is breathing. So,
EMS rushes her to an ambulance waiting outside while responders inside try to get a handle on this chaotic scene,
including tending to Brendan, who seems unable to even stand on his own. >> Can you check him out?
>> Yeah, I got I got more units here. We'll we'll check him out. Knives there, guns are on the bed.
>> Right here, the officer standing closest to Brendan mouths in the direction of
the body cam. He doesn't know. He says it twice, but it's not totally clear what he means cuz
Christine was still alive at the house, but I mean, it's possible that anyone with medical training would know that
her injuries were bad, likely not survivable.

When first responders entered the Banfield home, they found a chaotic and devastating scene.

Christine Banfield was still alive but suffering from multiple stab wounds. Joseph Ryan was already dead. As officers worked to secure the bedroom, one body camera captured an officer quietly mouthing the words, "He doesn't know."

Who the officer was referring to has never been made clear, and the meaning of the remark remains open to interpretation.
