On Memorial Day weekend in May 2011, Bill Stephenson, 74, and his wife, Peggy Stephenson, were expected to be exactly where they always were: serving at church in Florence, Kentucky. When they failed to arrive, their family knew something was wrong. Hours later, Bill and Peggy were found murdered inside their condominium in Boone County, Kentucky. What detectives discovered inside has haunted the investigation ever since.

In this episode, Ashley Flowers and Brit Prawat examine one of Kentucky’s most disturbing unsolved double homicides, a case involving a meticulously staged crime scene, cryptic symbolism, forensic evidence, and investigative details that have never been publicly shared before.

For the first time, investigators reveal new information about the crime scene, the evidence they believe was intentionally left behind, and the breakthrough that has brought them closer than ever to identifying Bill and Peggy’s killer.

You’ll hear about the events of May 29, 2011, that led Bill and Peggy’s family to discover something was terribly wrong, the unusual staging inside the Stephenson home that investigators believe was meant to send a message, the mysterious man seen searching for Bill at his truck stop ministry just days before the murders, the fingerprint that detectives spent more than a decade trying to identify, the unexpected phone call from a forensic technician that changed the course of the investigation, and why investigators now believe they may finally be closer to solving this case than ever before.

This investigation also explores Bill Stephenson’s truck stop ministry in Boone County, Kentucky, the behavioral analysis of the staged crime scene, advances in fingerprint and DNA technology, the challenges detectives faced separating genuine evidence from possible misdirection, and the questions that remain as investigators continue to pursue multiple persons of interest.

Fifteen years later, investigators believe someone still knows exactly what happened inside their home that Memorial Day weekend.
