The same man stood before two different judges just a few years apart. One judge
called him a predator who couldn't help himself. The other called him a good father with a less than ideal past. In
2006, Roger Huber stood in a court after pleading guilty to attempted rape and child endangerment charges involving
teenage girls. The judge had spent days reviewing the evidence and when it came time to sentence Roger, they didn't
mince words. They said, "I think you're a threat. I think you're a predator. I think you prey on young girls. I think
you have an inability almost to avoid that." And then the judge gave him the maximum sentence available. And it seems
like to that judge, Roger wasn't somebody who just made one bad decision. This was somebody that they believed
posed an ongoing danger. Now Roger eventually served his prison sentence and was released. But a few years later,
he was back in court because he violated his sex offender registration requirements after moving without
properly notifying authorities. And this time a different judge looked at the same man and said something very
different. The judge said, "Everything I know about you, Mr. Huber, is you're a good father." The judge went on by
saying that they weren't going to send Roger back to jail because you know, they didn't feel like they
should remove him from his family. Both judges had access to Roger's criminal history. Both knew he was a convicted
sex offender. But they walked away with completely different impressions of who he was. The
first judge looked at Roger's pattern of behavior. The second one focused on the
father standing in front of him years later and was fine sending him back to a home with children in it. How do you

After serving his prison sentence, Roger later returned to court for violating his sex offender registration requirements after moving without properly notifying authorities. This time, a different judge described him as "a good father" and chose not to send him back to jail, saying he did not want to separate Roger from his family.

Both judges were aware of Roger Hueber's criminal history, yet they reached very different conclusions about the person standing before them.
