- Full Episode
On July 22, 2001, Niqui McCown, a 28-year-old mother, vanished from Richmond, Indiana. She had just attended church at Mount Olive Baptist Church with her fiancé, Bobby Webster, and planned to spend the afternoon doing laundry before picking up her 9-year-old daughter, Payton. But, she never made it home.
Niqui was last seen that afternoon at the Richmond Coin Laundry on South E Street, and moments later at the Village Pantry next door. Witnesses described her as calm, but she had told her family she felt uncomfortable after being bothered by men at the laundromat.
Four months later, the vehicle she had been driving, a 1990 black and gray GMC Jimmy, was found more than an hour away at the Meadows of Catalpa Apartments in Dayton, Ohio, a place Niqui once lived and where several people from life were connected to, The car showed signs of tampering. Inside was a laundry basket filled with folded clothes. But, Niqui was nowhere to be found.
For years, the case appeared to have an ending. Attention focused on a former coworker, Tommy Swint, after his DNA linked him to an unrelated 1991 homicide in Ohio. Before investigators could question him further, Swint died, leaving behind no explanation, and the case of Niqui McCown quietly stalled.
But in 2026, Crime Junkie revisits the first case we ever shared with never-before-heard information from police records, witnesses, and people who knew Niqui best. This reinvestigation uncovers a witness who placed Bobby Webster at the laundromat with Niqui the day she disappeared, a previously unknown phone call Niqui made, a hidden trail leading back, again and again, to Meadows of Catalpa, and a coworker, Darlene Williams, whose name appears repeatedly in internal police theories.
With two key men in this case now deceased, the question remains: Was the wrong conclusion drawn and did that allow Niqui McCown to remain missing for nearly 25 years?
In this special investigative episode, Ashley Flowers and Brit Prawat reveal how early assumptions and overlooked details may have buried the truth and why it may not be too late to find answers.
