Reporter's Notebook: How a father copes | Forensic Files

When I met Steve her, the former Marine and school teacher, he greeted me with a
joke, he said that humor was his way of coping. Back in May 2010, he's looking for his son. Hasn't heard from him, his
only child, Sam. So, he goes to his apartment and what does he find in the bedroom? There's a young woman slumped
over the bed, shot dead. That's Julie Kibuishi. She has an obscenity scrolled on her
back. Her pants are ripped. She's got a tiara on her head that her brother had given her to wear in his upcoming
wedding. Just a horrific scene. And Sam, Steve's son, is nowhere to be found. What must have been going through his
head? Could my son have done this? No. Steve knew his kid. Steve knew no. Sam couldn't have done a thing like this.
But would any of the police on the scene believe him? What a horrific day that must have been. And yet that is nothing
compared to what Steve found out in the next days and months and years. This is a crime so twisted and so sick that even
seasoned investigators say it makes their stomachs turn. It's unbelievable that Steve Her
has any sense of humor left. It's an incredible story and that's the one we're telling this Saturday on 48
