Patti Hammond Shaw, a transgender woman, has legally idenitifed as a woman on both her birth certificate and dirver's license since 1993. In 2009, she was arrested, was strip-searched by male police officers in front of male prisoners and held overnight in the men's cellblock. Patti's lawyer fought back her landmark case was instrumental in changing the way police detain transgender individuals in Washington, D.C.
