Off The Record /// Aurora Hammer Slayer Update | Forensic Files

[Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] in my hand Captain I hold a true crime
garage Tumblr glass it's only noon so I have seven up in the glass but I tell you what I'm very happy with these
glasses the way they turned out man they the uh the weight is perfect the size is
perfect with them but here I am I want want to have a celebratory drink with you so I raise my seven up because it
sounds like face it sounds like they may have solved or at least we're getting very close to an arrest regarding the
Aurora Hammer Slayer case yes so we covered this in January of of this year which was kind of shocking to me it
seemed like a long time ago that we covered it but the it seems like a couple years it didn't it yeah well
those are episodes 175 and 176 for those of you that are smart enough to have the
Stitcher app right so here's the thing this guy that they're checking out his name is Alex
Christopher ying and I say checking out now this could change and this could change as we are sitting here in the
garage without TVs in front of us right now this guy could actually be charged the way I understand this he's
technically not been charged with anything but he's by far the most interesting suspect that they have so
far because this is a guy that has proven he is capable of Acts very similar to the horrible acts that
happened in Aurora uh back in what was that like 19 84 yeah yeah so listen to this this
dude Alex Christopher Ying you'll be glad to know he's already in prison he's he's 57 years old he's serving 8 to 40
years in a Nevada prison now he's eligible for parole in July of 2021 and his sentence will expire in
April of 2037 so 2037 he's 57 years old now I mean this dude might be be practically
a lifer right uh he would be about he'd be about 77 at that time now remember this is the case it was January 4th
1980 well there was a series of attacks four four separate attacks and it sounds
like they like this guy for at least two of them remember when we covered this we
had some questions as to if all four were actually connected I I personally believe that they're all four connected
I have a hard time believing that they wouldn't be right um they're such similar attacks and they happened so
close together it and it and I think if this is the right guy Captain I think we
were right I think we nailed this thing meaning in a sense that we said this we solved it well we're we're fully
responsible no I mean couldn't be further from the truth but but the thing here is we were kind of offering up
little tidbits of a possible profile of this guy stating that we thought this was somebody that was young somebody
that was physically strong so he would have been in his early he would have been 24 when these attacks went down
when and we also had the DNA where they made a profile of his face like they did
the DNA and and and if you look at what they came up with and and the guy that they caught not that far off no yeah
yeah that's actually the first time I'm seeing the those side by side and you're
right that's that's pretty close and with that snapshot DNA I believe I keep calling it that but I don't know that
that's what they actually call it but anyway they make a computerized composite sketch of of the perpetrator
using the DNA and they even did an aged enhanced one you know what he would look
like all these years later and you're right captain that it looks pretty close but here okay look they got a couple
things wrong if you look at the DNA the no his nose is a little more pointy a little bit nose but look at that mouth
that mouth that's what it looks like if You' make a sound for what his mouth looks
like it would be that might be one of the douchiest faces and I'm not just saying that cuz
he's a killer I mean there's definitely some douchy faces on people well we don't know for certain that he's a
killer yet look at the that face how douchy is that face and and just when you think
that it's not that douchy oh wait his his younger face is worse he it's like he has this
uh I can't explain it you have to see a picture of him but well here's the thing
so this guy if he is connected to all four of these attacks that we discussed this is four Hammer attacks in the metro
area over a 12-day span and what I meant by one thing I think we were close on when we were kind of adding tidbits of
our own thoughts to a possible profile of the perpetrator of these crimes is we said that what this shows us that th
this many attacks in such a short period of time and attacks that are extremely extremely violent we were saying this
looks like a guy that's off the rails like that has completely spun out of control and he's just attacking at will
and I think what kind of where we kind of got this right Captain was like I said this dude is in prison right now
why because he is he's been convicted of a similar attack and he's also been a suspect in another similar attack and
these happened just days after the 12-day Span in which he was attacking people in and around Aurora Colorado so
11 days after the attack on the Bennetts on the Bennett family that was the family of four and three of them
unfortunately were killed in that that attack someone broke into a home in Kingman Arizona and beat the resident
that was inside with a rock now Ying has never been convicted of that however he
was arrested in that case and I don't want to say I don't want to sound like he's innocent at all in this case he's
probably extremely guilty but what happened is before he could be convicted of that charge well he he he broke out
he made an escape he escaped when they were transporting him from the jail to the courtroom to face charges on
breaking into that home in Kingman Arizona he busted out now he was only on the run for about two days but in the
course of that two days he managed to make his way to Henderson Nevada and there he broke into another home and he
once inside he beat the couple that was inside with an ax handle now that was that's what he's actually been charged
with he's been charged with the escape with running and evading police as well as breaking into this home and
assaulting the two individuals inside which is so eerily similar to all the cases in Aurora Colorado right I think
one reason why you're not connecting them or maybe why law enforcement didn't is cuz the locations it' be a pretty far
distance now I've seen several news articles on this and I went to like uh N9 news is is a great station out there
in Denver and I also went to I think it's called I prefer 10 News the Denver news all of these outlets and I think I
said this when we covered the case they all do a very good job of presenting these stories and and telling the facts
and telling what happened um regarding the information coming out this is coming out late last week and we still
need to be filled in on some of the information it sounds to me like DNA is what is the
link here and that they've been able to link possibly link this dude's DNA to at
least two of the four attacks that happened back in 1984 right like we said we had the DNA
so we could do the profile pick and I'm pretty certain that parabon Nano Labs a company that we've discussed often and
and actually recently we've talked about them a lot lately I believe they were the ones that did that uh computer
composite of the possible perpetrator so I kept reading and reading and reading and looking for those magical words
parabon nanu labs to see if they were the ones that worked this DNA and busted this guy but then the thing I kept
thinking about though Captain is look not only were we right about saying this dude was off the rails and that this guy
think about this 11 days after he kills three of a family of four he's at it again in a whole different town breaking
into another place whole different state state yeah and several people we talked
to leading up to this case all said the same thing if this guy did all four of these it would shock me if he would stop
it would be it it would be very incredibly hard to believe that an individual like this would stop right
and he didn't he just moved to a different territory and who knows how many homes he would have broken into in
that area well and when he got caught he gets I mean who escapes from prison not
a lot of people no not a lot of people and the first thing he does while he's on the run is oh I'm going to break into
another home and do the same thing here you know I'm going to throw this out there mhm you can shoot it down if you
want but what if this guy's uh you know bipolar or something and and what I mean
by that is that this guy went on this spree uhhuh but that could be like a manic
State the guy got in a hyper manic state right and and and in a hyper manic State
you have almost I'm going to get [ __ ] for this but you will have more like superhuman
strength you're going to be stronger you're going to your energy is going to be more and what if he just went from
one to another and to another I don't know the guy's mental state I'm well yeah yeah and and we
before you start typing out the the long email to me we're not trying to suggest
that people that are bipolar are violent individuals we're looking at this very specific case right here with this one
individual and we're just bringing up some questions here what something triggered this to happen that's what I
believe you're saying captain and you're absolutely right something triggered this to happen because before that 12
days as far as we know he wasn't busting into people's homes and killing them in
the middle of the night some [ __ ] happened some [ __ ] went down I mean I don't I don't know what some [ __ ] no but
that's what I wonder because what if it's just this state that this individual got in and maybe it's you
know maybe the person's you know psychotic I'm not very I'm not sure I'm just saying that seems like a very this
Rampage almost seems very manic to me no I agree and that's why I think you're seeing such a so many attacks in such a
short period of time this is nothing like you know when we covered the the um Colonial Parkway murders right
there's almost a year in between those attacks right that that seems like thought out and planned that's somebody
that wants to be a serial killer that's somebody that's like you know what I'm going to find victims I'm going to find
perfect victims that I I have deemed perfect and I'm going to kill them in this way that way and this way and this
is how I'm going to get away with it and also those individuals have to if you're going to make a case that
that these killings going to happen just on the parkway mhm that you also that individual has to be of the sound mind
of oh okay I pulled up I got a couple there maybe I can attack and then they look at the surroundings they realize
there's more people around there than they thought they back away from the attack you see what I'm saying like
that's this guy has no control no you're right what what you're saying is okay the difference between the two is this
right okay the the serial killer the Colonial Parkway murders that person or persons what they were doing is similar
to what a hunter would do right you know the the climate needs to be right the weather needs to be right my my stand
that I put in the tree needs to be in the right location angled this way and I want to be there at this time of
day and if something crosses my path MH I'm taking it down and it's very methodical it's very thought out it's
very planned it's almost like a ritual this dude he doesn't have to have so many things right for him to carry out
the attack it seems to me like uh you know if he did the the attack during the day that one almost seems to me like if
I spot a woman that I find attractive I'm attacking and raping that's it it seems that loose that loose
of a plan very disorganized we would call this person label him a disorganized killer in most of the
senses um question things that I hope are qu answered that we question MH um did he bring the weapon with him or was
it a weapon that he found in the home or in the garage on his way in remember I I
really suspect this guy went in through the man door in the garage and he could have picked up a weapon on his way into
the home most disorganized Killers do not bring a weapon with them on his other attacks he didn't bring a weapon
is that what it says well no I'm just saying that you said that he hit the one people with a
rock right right unless he was lugging that rock around for days hey man this this rock look like a good weapon now
let me put this in my pocket well that's interesting and and I tell you what I I
finished now that I finished uh the kill jar which is a book that I'm very happy
that we're going to talk about more this week I started reading the man from the
train and forgive me I don't have the author's name wait wait wait hold on I don't want to pick on this author but
the the title of the book is the man from the train yeah okay it's a great title and actually once you how's that
agree because because that's a very creative title no no no that he he this author claims to have solved quite
a bit of cases um and he's during the course of the book He's referring to the killer as the man from the train yeah I
get it I'm just saying there's probably a more creative what should what should he call it I don't know I haven't read
the book Thomas Smith what I'm saying he might have cracked a bunch of cases but
he didn't crack the case of a creative title okay that'd be like somebody writing a book about us and saying two
men from the garage that's all I'm saying I'm sure it's awesome book I get what you're
saying I think it's a clever title myself two men from no that's a terrible title anyway but the thing that's that's
interesting about this case uh the the man from the train case is that it's also kind of it's very much like this
perpetrator like Alex Christopher Ying if in fact he did do all these murders and these attacks it's a guy gets he
rides the rails he gets off the train and he's looking for just like two two or three specific things and if he can
check those boxes you're in you're in a bad place because he's going to come into your
place in the middle of the night and he's going to attack your entire family and he only needed a few things he
wanted wanted your home to be close to the railroad tracks but also far also away from town you know not in the
middle of town somewhere right and he's looking for for one thing and one thing that a lot of people had back then these
these crimes took place in the uh very early 1900s he was looking for a wood pile
with an ax handle sticking out of the top of it and he would just he would use that axe to go into your home and and
destroy your family and it's very we've covered so many home invasions lately well those to me personally those are
the ious cases to me because I mean you you're talking about someone just coming
into your home where do we usually feel the safest at home and this is somebody coming into your home and taking control
over you and the occupants inside the home and and killing you or doing whatever they want inside your home to
me that's the most terrifying of all of these monsters out there when I said before we're probably in the Golden Age
of catching these monsters but we're also in the Golden Age of waiting cuz I mean even with the uh Golden State
killer now with the roora hammer Slayer um what was the other one that we covered well Christy Merrick but uh
right that guy's been convicted right yeah DJ freeze so he's been freeze yeah he's been convicted we're but we're also
waiting on April Tinsley right we're waiting on so golden age of waiting speaking of golden though the Golden
State killer that dude is the he's he's dragging this thing out because what he's trying to claim is that he's old
and frail and he's got health problems and so he's he's trying to delay his court date yeah I mean he is an old
piece of [ __ ] yeah and April Tinsley I think will get a conviction before even
convicting the Golden State killer in this sense too I think this one might move along rather fast because if this
guy did it if Alex Christopher Ying did this he's already in prison I think that's going to move things along faster
one and two right remember what the prosecutor did that was very clever he actually already has an arrest warrant
issued by the state of Colorado for this individual but it's the individual who um who owns the DNA let's say right so
there's not a specific name on this arrest warrant but whoever owns that DNA that's who the the warrant for arrest is
for so what my thinking is here is we probably know about this Ying guy because somebody leaked it to the media
that hey we have some leakage well we got a guy that we like and we're in the process of getting a warrant to get his
DNA to extract his DNA and confirm that it matches the these two cases right I don't know how much of a defense he can
have if it matches in both of these cases I'm curious dude he can pull the Shaggy defense all day long not that
it's used very much but I'm curious if there's the death penalty in in Colorado um because if there is somebody
deserving of that it's certainly the perpetrator of whoever killed the Bennett family yeah but I
think I wish law enforcement and prose UTS and just the justice system in general if they got hip to the idea that
yes he's deserving of that but how much and I think a lot of them know this but it's so much harder to convict them
and then once you do convict them all the appeals that they get where it's like if you just pulled that off the
table it's a lot easier MH and now I think what they're doing now is saying okay we'll pull that off the table if
you give us more information right well the thing here is you know what would be
interesting and I've seen this this happens on occasion it's pretty rare um and I don't know why it is so rare maybe
maybe you're not allowed to do it I don't know how you know the the court systems vary uh across our great nation
and so what I'm talking about here is sometimes in some of these cases what they will do is if they suspect you of
having killed three or four people uh especially when you have a case where there's three people in the same attack
as we have here with the Bennett family sometimes they'll just charge one they'll just charge you for one of those
murders that way if somehow you can beat it somehow you can beat the charge we don't face the whole Double Jeopardy
thing here we can now charge you for the murder of the parents instead because you know we couldn't get the conviction
for whatever reason on that other charge it gives them a chance to kind of to go
back regroup reorganize build a better case and get some more evidence to put this monster behind bars well hopefully
um we get some answers pretty soon well on all these cases yeah no I agree the thing what's weird though is
you know we had mentioned I had mentioned maybe we would see a break in the Lane Bryant murders mhm because of
this new technology I'm starting I don't want anybody to you know I don't want to
be a Debbie Downer I'm starting to wish that I had not made that statement because it doesn't look like that case
falls into the same category as the cases that they are making moves on and what I mean by that is the the four
major cases that we've discussed where DNA seems to be the new technology of DNA seems to be the spearheading the the
investigation and making the break in the case in these cold cases three out of those four cases there was a lot of
DNA there was a lot of DNA evidence and laye Bryant there's not a ton of DNA evidence left in that case so what I
think we should anticipate and maybe expect to see moves on here soon would be cases where there were a lot of DNA
meaning multiple crime scenes multiple victims the one that I think that we could see a a major break soon and I
really hope so and and when we do uh not that you know all these cases are are are tug at the heartstrings
equally but that's not true all look there's a lot of cases that they just affect people differently you're going
to have cases that you read about and for whatever reason it's going to affect you differently I mean it's just like
with the Johnny Johnny gosh case for whatever reason because he was a paper boy for whatever reason that connect
with that case more right I don't think that's it I mean again we have respect for all the victims some some of the
cases just hit closer to home I wasn't really clear I I what I meant when I said all of these cases I meant the four
that we've had breaks in and and the one that I'm about to mention and and I and
I said that because you know it's noon so I got seven up in my tumbler and you know p face I I've already had a real
celebratory drink when I heard that there was going to be an arrest in this case and I did the same thing in the
other cases and I will do so with this one as well the yogurt shop is the one that I think that we might see a Breakin
that that is a case that had um you know it's a bigger case one of the most famous if not the most famous case in
Texas right and there was DNA but the thing that I kept wondering about with the yogurt shop
murders so for the these cases to to be solved in this manner they have to be submitted and paid for the test paid for
by local law enforcement and the thing with yogurt shop as much as I think that they would
love to make that case and put a case together against someone the thing that's tricky about that remember there
were two guys sent to prison for yogurt shop and eventually released and they've
not been rewarded any kind of uh compensation for for their time in prison or for their possible wrongful
convictions because remember what the judge said when they tried to say hey look we were wrongfully convicted the
state owes us something well Texas law makes it so that look if the captain's convicted of these charges he serves a
little bit of time and then later he's let out because he puts together a good appeal right and he's out well it's not
technically a wrongful conviction until you can prove that you're innocent right
and so these two individuals while they are out of prison they've not technically proven in a court of law
that they are innocent of those charges of those convictions so what I'm getting
at here is if they test yogurt shop and if they find a match and then they track
down the individual or the individuals and they make the arrest that has the domino effect of now we've
made an arrest and we have people to go to trial and trust me that trial those convictions will lead to death penalties
so we have those Domino effects but we also have the Domino that we now we have to pay these two guys because we know
they're innocent because these other people did it yeah but it's money and I think Justice is more important of well
I think duh duh it's but but that's you and me that's you and me we're we're regular dudes we're smart dudes we are
not corrupt dudes there are corrupt individuals yeah but the majority of people getting into law enforcement
corrupt people that's not what I'm saying I'm what I'm saying is there could be a speed bump along the way
there could be one individual I know I know majority of them are good I know the majority of them are great but could
be there could be one Bad Seed in there yeah don't push it too far they're good there will be no money uh no no
yeah but so hopefully we get some answers on that uh I I need to try to find this picture
for you to see I would expect formal um I would expect real charges against this guy this week if if he is in fact
their guy it won't take long for the test to come back okay and I would expect real charges this week like I
said this this could be happening as we are talking about it right now you know this we you'll hear off the Record

hey we know those guys so they're in New Hampshire yeah with these soil samples they go in and she's listening to uh the
captain blaring out the speakers yeah telling her telling her how handsome Tim and Lance are yeah if you haven't
