Khalid Sheikh Mohammed KSM the US government says he's a killer and the architect of a devious al-qaeda
strategy to hide sleeper cells suicide bombers inside some of the world's leading cities we thought that only a 17
18 or 22 year old somewhere in the Middle East with no future could strap himself or herself with explosives and
blow themselves up we now know that it could be a family man to be somebody with roots even in the community Khalid
in a written confession prompted by CIA interrogators using waterboarding claims
his cells attacked New York's Trade Towers rush hour trains in London and Madrid as well as nightclubs in Bali
he calls himself a warrior and wants to die a martyr now for the first time on television KS Em's confession is it the
truth for the desperate claims of a man undergoing torture [Music] [Music] in his get mo confession KSM writes
about his first trips to America when he studied at a college in North Carolina he traveled to New York City and prayed
with a blind Egyptian sheikh abdul-rahman his nephew Ramsey Yosef joined him at a mosque in New Jersey it
was 1990 KSM says they had plans for what would soon be called the first terrorist strikes in America a frantic
call to 911 demotion a drama which has now led to the World Trade Center bombing you're looking at amateur video
of a man about to die his name is Rabbi Meir kahani he had been speaking for nearly an hour at the
end of his speech friends gathered around him he was a man of controversy considered a racist by Arabs and even
some Jews the amateur video camera was turned off ten seconds before an assassin shot to honey dead
[Music] witnesses who were in the room when the incident occurred we have a witness who
was directly behind him chasing him we have a couple of other witnesses who sure the sword the encounter in the
street everything indicates he was acting alone they consider him the big Jew he was the Jew that had the guts to
stand up to the Arabs in Israel to neo-nazis in America he was the Jewish defender if you will and taking out
Kahana meant taking out the big dude Microsoft's key leads a group whose name means kahani lives here we see rabbi
cahana Jewish leader gunned down on the streets of New York and the police managed to bungle up every possible
aspect of the investigation what was your feeling about the lone gunman theory I thought it was preposterous
based on what my sources in the NYPD told me that that they were ordered to treat this as a simple homicide based on
what my sources and the FBI told me that every time that they got a little bit ambitious and started broadening their
investigation to search out else I'd know there's possible alleged terrorist links they were told from a top to cool
it to stop investigating that the NYPD would handle it as a simple homicide a single gunman acting alone how often
that phrase echoes in dark and complex cases the suspect shot and arrested that night el Sayyid Nosair he recovered and
stood trial his lawyer was William Kunstler the trial was bitter or several times during the proceedings itself
where fight started right in the courtroom between these two sides for every Jew none of them could have
guessed the way it would end because even though there were hundreds of people in the room at the time of the
murder and even though no ser was arrested with the murder weapon in his hand he was found not guilty of cojones
Nosair was convicted of the other shootings and is in Attica state prison right now we feel that the American
authorities were knew about the Kahana assassination plot before it happened that they were quite happy with it
happening and there's a lot that the government wants to cover up here Yousaf ski and his group weren't the only ones
who didn't believe the official story we sat down with the Intelligence Division
of the police department and told them that this was not a lone gunman that this was a conspiracy that had to be
controlled because they didn't control it now sometime in the future there would be great tragedy for lawyer berry
slotnick the murder of his friend was more than just another case for three years berry slotnick has been telling
authorities the Sheikh was connected to Connie's murder that the Sheikh was dangerous that the rabbi's murder was
just the beginning I believe that they went to the mosque and they made a deal I said no more fooling around no more
will forgive you for this one if you did it but no more that's the terrible truth
that's the tragedy of what may have occurred slot Knicks warnings fell on deaf ears the authorities wouldn't or
couldn't listen in light of new evidence slotnick now believes he understands why
apparently there was high-level protection of the Sheikh and I believe based upon all the logical conclusions
that you come forward with one result that it was in return for what had occurred in Afghanistan that his
protection came from the CIA and that it was crystal clear that he had worked as
an operative or at least in conjunction with the CIA Robert Friedman was the first reporter to interview Elsayed
nécessaire in prison what I discovered what I meant Nocera was was an Islamic fundamentalist who was dedicated to the
destruction of the United States but with a shooter arrested holding a smoking gun the police had their killer
an international plot didn't fit in with the simple lone gunman theory as for clues
if the police had wanted to slotnick says there was plenty to investigate day after Kohana was killed
no CEA's house was searched what'd they find they found classified documents they
found important papers they found where the Israeli Defense Forces were in major
weaponry they also found sketches and diagrams of major buildings in the city of New York somebody knew he was just
not a lone gunman now three years later the police have finally linked the World
Trade Center bombers with kahana's murder the Sheikh himself was named in an indictment in the newly reopened
kahani case it's what people like Barry slotnick have been saying all along I was a cassandra who was screaming into
the wind talking about conspiracy talking about plots talking about the future talking about how these people
could realistically wreak havoc and no one wanted to listen the first time the Sheikh appears on the on the radar
screen in Egypt in the United States this in 1978 when he was living in Cairo and orchestrated a violent riot against
Coptic Christians living in Cairo a few years later he was arrested and tried along with many others in Egypt for the
assassination of Anwar Sadat the blind sheikh was acquitted of Sadat's killing but his followers were
convicted and executed the Sheikh left Egypt under pressure wound up in Afghanistan is one of the leaders of the
Muslim guerrilla movement that fought the Russians in that country and that was where the Sheik and the CIA
first crossed paths it was an unholy marriage but the Arabs have a saying the enemy of my enemy is my friend
America wanted the Russians to lose the war in Afghanistan so America armed and trained its own sworn enemies including
Sheik Rahman to fight the Russians we've trained these Afghans and and we've supplied them with equipment and
obviously we've trained them on how to handle prepare and use explosives and and weaponry in a very devastating and
deadly manner when the Sheik set up a recruiting center in America for volunteers to fight the Russians the CIA
allowed it to operate meantime the US government was channeling hundreds of millions in heavy weapons into the hands
of the Muslim fighters in the cia-run training camps in Pakistan just across the Khyber Pass from Afghanistan I was
involved in the program I have many years of experience in Iran Afghanistan Pakistan I've traveled across
Afghanistan a couple of times with meeting with tribesmen and and photographing Soviet military
installations Jeanne Wheaton knows what he's talking about he says that when our
CIA trains guerrilla fighters in some remote part of the world the spies say they're teaching the fighters tradecraft
but the public knows it by another name it's all criminal activity it's smuggling across borders it's
counterfeiting it's bribing government officials its assassinations its terrorist acts as we would see them some
of the accused bombers of the World Trade Centers spent months and years fighting the Russians in Afghanistan
with the war won and the Russians defeated thousands of guerrilla fighters were left with no war to wage and no
homes some of them had ties to America some of them hated America some of them came here and brought their killing
skills with them it happens after every war they call it the problem of disposal and once
you train a cadre of young revolutionaries the adrenaline in these people's blood
and the thrill of the thing and just the expertise and it makes them not want to
go home and run the equivalent of a 7-eleven store they want to continue their trade you've tucked them to the
international criminals and there's no way of taking it back once you how to do this
[Applause] half a ton a bomb under one of the world's tallest buildings tens of thousands inside six people killed
outright a thousand injured the FBI said if conditions had been right the whole immense tower could have crashed down on
the lower Manhattan until that morning this scene was unthinkable in America this was something that happened to
other people in other places Paris London Rome the Middle East somehow with all the wars all the revolutions all the
killing America had been spared until now and it was the middle east as the FBI confirmed within a week of the
bombing the way we were told this story it was almost laughable he returned to the Ryder truck company about 10:15 a.m.
this morning ostensibly to obtain the return of a $400 deposit fee he had left for the van when he rented it the worst
terrorism ever in the United States and the world's stupidest terrorists who returned to collect his refund on the
truck that carried the bomb that was the way we heard it but for some people it wasn't the truth the real story was far
different far more terrifying this Trade Center bombing was a very professional job in the beginning the
the federal agencies and the media fluffed it off as a as a few amateurs coming in and and deciding that they
wanted to make a statement this group that did the Trade Center bombing in my opinion was trained by international

bombshell rocked New York there was a new wave of arrests again all the suspects were tied to the blind Sheikh
and their new plan Plan B as it was called was breathtaking the target sites were the Lincoln Tunnel the Holland
Tunnel the United Nations the Federal Building at 26 Federal Plaza which houses the FBI they included physical
surveillance and reconnaissance of these targets they included acquiring a safe house which in the last few days
ultimately became a bomb factory this time the disaster had been averted the plotters were arrested inside their
rented bomb Factory in the very act of preparing their murderous pastes as we entered the bomb factory the five
subjects were actually mixing the witch's brew we entered so fast some of the subjects said they didn't realize
strangers were in the bomb factory until they had the handcuffs being put on them
for the FBI it was a spectacular success right after the disaster at the World Trade Center
a terrorist cell in the midst of New York with a grand plan to bring the whole city to its knees in a huge orgasm
of explosions and shootings arrested in the act of making the bombs it was almost too perfect and the American
governments replaced the the Red Menace with the green peril green being the color of Islam it seems like we always
need a boogie man and the boogie man of the week is is now militant Islam KSM left for Indonesia he had plans a plot
he called pachinko to blow up a dozen airliners on their way to the American West Coast it was a failure so he
decided to go to Afghanistan and join Osama bin Laden and al-qaeda the blind Rahman was eventually charged in
connection with the first trade tower bombing and sent to prison Osama vowed revenge KSM urged their sama
to take direct action to declare war against the West al Qaeda hit US embassies and Western targets in Africa
in Washington Michael Shure at the CIA was given a team of agents and the task of finding bin Laden bin Laden is an
unusual man for the United States and that we I think we have never had an enemy who has been more precise in
outlining and speaking about what he's mad at what he's going to do about it why he's going to do it and then doing
it and over the years really the best information there was about his intentions and his philosophy were his
words his discussions with Muslim journalists but also people like Peter Bergen and John Miller they were
tremendously useful interviews not only for the substance of them but for the atmospherics we met with him in 1897 it
was clear that he was involved in financing Islamic extremist groups but it wasn't clear that he was going to be
yeah the intellectual author of so much Mayim and catastrophe and even then he was very concerned about his security
similar to this interview we we were doing a TV interview with him except that we weren't allowed to bring any of
our own equipment we weren't even allowed to bring our own watches there very concerned about us secreting some
kind of tracking device to find Osama bin Laden of course you go into the hands of al-qaeda they kind of dryclean
you as they go further and further from any ability to have any contact and you're met by his number two Ayman
al-zawahiri his number three is military chief Mohammed Atef and a number of their security people
they went through our gear and we were loaded into trucks then we went through a series of security checkpoints you
would be driving down the road and men would jump out from the bushes with guns and confront your vehicle and then they
would question the driver when we got to the mountaintop it was like a movie sent there were lights set
up there was a big Quonset hut at some point around midnight with all of the troops from the base gathered there all
with their weapons ak-47 shoulder holsters pistols some in the khakis most in the shalwar kameez a traditional
Islamic garb and headgear a caravan of three Japanese SUV arrived and as the doors opened Bin Ladin gets out and the
first thing that strikes me is how tall he is he's like six foot five towering over a bunch of security men carrying
guns looking in each direction at the same time everybody there on the mountaintop opens fire into the air with
their guns [Music] then Lydon sat down on top of a kind of red blanket that had been laid across a
bench and I sat on a little stool across from him and I started to go through my
list of questions mr. Bin Ladin you are a very rich man mr. fellows you a man who comes from a background well and
comfort you've fought on the front lines in Afghanistan clearly you didn't have to why did you do that and of course his
answer would be my first real interchange with him now you may use Lebanon amid that
he spent a lot of time laying things out that night because he wanted a clear message to go to the Americans one
problem is he was looking at the translator so I was about to come back with a one-hour interview with a guy who
was looking over here so I I caught his eye and I started to nod as if I had spontaneously learn to understand Arabic
that night in the tent and I kept nodding and I would I would I would turn to looks of great interest at certain
parts and puzzlement at others but I I wanted to make sure that Bin Ladin and I stayed engaged so I could keep him
facing the camera behind me and somewhere along the interview between my gazing and nodding he said was my last
question I asked all the questions I wanted to ask I wasn't sure what I had gotten was it wasn't been translated at
the end of the interview I went to my translator who was kept in the back and I said
did we did he answer any of those questions do we have a story here and he said yes we have a very big story let's
get the tapes and get out of here he has declared war on America and he is that many people will die
KSM says he flew to Hamburg Germany Mohamed Atta was running a cell there KSM gave him an operational manual a
code of conduct they discussed an al Qaeda unit living in Southern California another near the White House in
Washington an artist team which would eventually send her in Florida the second world trade tower attack was now
underway I have the sense that Otto was very entrepreneurial and I think he had a team and he was prepared to do any one
of a number of ideas work them out if the opportunity arose in December of 1999 al Sheehy Jarrah and odda
reported their passports stolen they submitted false information to German officials and within weeks were issued
new travel permits that they used to fool American immigration authorities according to police auda arrived in
Miami in April 2006 to matically began putting pieces of the attack together in May he went to Delray Beach to inquire
about purchasing a crop-dusting plane shortly after that at Hoffman aviation odda and now she he paid $40,000 in cash
for flight instructions my first impression from Ottawa is I didn't like him at all
I didn't like his expression I tried to speak in German to him and he didn't answer me in German I just didn't like
the person at all these are the two right here that that rented my property Mohammed Otto and his cousin well this
is the living room it's only about a thousand square foot house of course they have the kitchen here they have
separate bedrooms I talked to a she twice a tie I never talked to I seen but we never made eye contact or
anything like that and it was usually when I was mowing the grass here and they would drive up I assumed from
school and they'd get out of the car and course I would wave he had waved back and and they'd go in the house sometimes
he'd say hi how you doing and I'd say fine how are you and just small talk like that actually they were very very
pleasant to me said yes said thank you odda was the only one that ate out she he only had coffee oughta had a veggie
cheese omelet and some orange juice but other than that I really didn't bother and most people you don't bother in the
morning for breakfast and basically they spoke among themselves to each other but
very quietly you wouldn't have even known they were talking because I couldn't tell you if it was in a foreign
language or an American but every time I approached the table they would stop talking the reason I think that I
remember him the most was his eyes when he would look at you as if he was looking directly through you there was
no emotion in him at all Mohammed said he was here as a commercial airline pilot I talk a lot to my neighbors I'm
always outside and one night it was late at night and they had two other people that came in a different vehicle and
came through went in for like five minutes and came right back out and then they left
their flight lessons continued by day and according to investigators the meetings occurred at night out of sight
they were being taught on small planes but they were secretly studying manuals to operate giant jet liners and what was
most disturbing was what was overlooked by the American trainers Tata and the others were not interested in learning
how to land during the summer of 2000 according to kayo sims confession San Diego was
headquarters to a number of Mohammed Atta's cell members Hani Hanjour a Saudi Arabian with a commercial pilot's
license nawaf al Hansie another Saudi Arabian and Khalid Al Modar from Yemen they spoke little English but did not
stand out in San Diego's increasingly diverse landscape with one of the nation's largest middle-eastern
communities they live close to mosques first in a large Claremont apartment complex and then at the Lemon Grove
apartment complex home of a prominent Muslim leader ever since I've moved in here there's been Middle Eastern people
living in the house so I and I'm not no I'm saying prejudice they all look alike
to me I mean they did you know typically address the same have the same haircuts
have the same beard so I didn't ever thank much of it they were not suspicious they never bothered anyone
never caused any upwards to where we needed to call the police but they did try and blend in very well they didn't
make themselves you know like outcasts or well-known and they didn't draw attention to themselves
[Music] at Montgomery field al Hamza in alma dar took flying lessons they had called from
the Middle East to arrange for six lessons at sir bees flying club with instructor Rick Garza this is the
aircraft that they actually took the two flight lessons in as you can see it's very basic they had problems
understanding how these flight controls here worked and I typically would have one sitting in the pilot's seat I would
sit in the right side as an instructor and then the other gentleman would sit in the back seat Cleef was in the back
and he was praying when Bluff was actually following me and I was trying to teach him how to land an aircraft
that was about the only thing unusual and then the last flight they just wanted to fly to an airport and fly back
they didn't want to do the maneuvers that we had planned and certainly I won't allow somebody to direct how their
flight trains should go so I told them we gotta quit guys after just two lessons the would-be pilots were
dismissed also at this time some of the terrorists were cited at the local Islamic Center of San Diego I don't know
much about how terrorist cells conduct their business but I'm sure that they probably have some kind of teaching or
indoctrination that occurs what I can tell you very confidently is that if those things occurred they did not occur
at the Islamic Center dr. ed Dean said the Koran he reads does not advocate violence we as Muslim Americans do not
agree with these kind of acts in any way shape or form they are not part of a slam they're not part of our religion
they're not part of what we believe in at all KSM called the cells to a meeting in las
vegas it would soon be time to strike in the early part of this letter of instructions he basically is almost
describing the need to anoint themselves in preparation for a ritual death what he's particularly concerned about
appropriately is that there will be anxiety went on the plane just before the act occurs and the anxiety will
betray the hijackers you must not show any signs of nervousness or stress and be joyful happy cheerful and calm
because you are about to carry out an action that Allah loves and that pleases him then they will follow the day when
with Allah's permission you will be the with the nymphs in paradise accordingly smile in the face of adversity young man
for you are departing to the eternal paradise on September 10th Muhammad auda and Ally Marie flew to Boston rented a
car and then drove to Portland Maine KSM was hiding at a secret location aware that the world would change forever
at the dawn he had an exit strategy that included bin Laden and a mountain range
called Tora Bora [Music] I arrived a few days after September 11 I crossed into Afghanistan and
positioned myself waiting for the fall of Kabul once Kabul found the BNP rumors that
there was an operation for tora bora which was going to take place in some caves way out past Jalalabad which had
been built by the US military during the days of the Mujahideen and that this was
where of sama was hiding two days before leaving Jalalabad some of in Laden tells
the local warlords you've helped us before we will defeat this enemy the same way that we defeated the Soviets
and we just need your assistance and this was a couched in such a way to suggest that there was something in
return in fact the return came at the end of the banquet because they were envelopes handed out to all the warlords
and and these envelopes contain money two days later the al-qaeda organization fanned out into the city to gather the
forces together and move in the direction of Tora Bora but there was some resistance within al-qaeda they
were members that wanted to draw the Americans in to an urban type of setting to have a Mogadishu type of
confrontation he eventually was able to persuade them to get in the cars and drive out to Tora Bora Mountain reduct
why did he go to Tora Bora because Tora Bora was where if you or I were trying to avoid the US Army that's why we would
go I'm his place was set up by the training Soviet war in Afghanistan as a place which would withstand very heavy
bombing where you could hide out for you know days months it's got a lot of places you can escape from into Pakistan
[Music] so in the first days of December 2001 I drove out at that point quite a dangerous road between Kabul and
Jalalabad there'd been some reporters had been killed on it I got out to Jalalabad started asking questions and
then headed out to Tora Bora once I got there and once I actually got inside the
caves I realized why it was strategically a place you would go if you were going to hide they'd left the
city which is an urban centre of a hundred thousand and they taken the desert roads up into the mountains which
are actually south of the town the peaks were snow-capped at the time they had left in the middle of the night and when
we got there we didn't know that they had actually just been there there were small numbers of Green Berets
that came in late November and they started to try to get to know the local warlords they didn't really know them
they didn't know who they could trust they really didn't believe in this twenty five million dollar reward for
Osama bin Laden for them that was pie in the sky they just wanted to do their regular business they were renting out
cars for $200 a day they had a racket in the local hotels they were taking far more seriously the money the hundred
dollar bills that were handed out by the individual journalists on the ground these guys could be bought and sold for
fifty dollars and that was quite shocking to think the Americans had put their trust into these kind of
characters KSM worried about the American reaction he intended to leave Afghanistan and the
al-qaeda camps immediately Osama bin Laden wanted to stay and fight the all-out assault is very slow in
gathering speed it didn't start until December 5th and one of the Warlord's actually woke up that morning and turned
on CNN and noticed that there was an offensive starting in Tora Bora and he didn't he hadn't been informed himself
so he called a couple hundred guys and he got them together and they ran up the mountain and so it was very unorganized
if you can imagine and that the problem was that the rear was never covered and there was never a plan to come
[Music] is pretty spectacular in a terrible sense and I remember jumping in the car with
one commander who was riding up bombs were falling and we wanted to get out into the cage and it was very difficult
for journalists to operate at that point we were basically ended the bombing was intense was wild wheat
we actually were almost right beneath some of the communities as they were bombing and interestingly enough a lot
of the the the bombs that came in and the cruise missiles as well had little messages written on them from the
American soldiers I remember finding that rocket casing written by an American soldier I take this one or so
much this is for your goat's ass and this is you know this is agreement the little messages to the enemy from men
who were fighting of course 10,000 feet overhead or somewhere in the Arabian Sea
the American bombardment they said was very effective however the Americans on the ground weren't affected because if
we were very few of them commander Musa was one of the frontline commanders he said there were six Americans with him
he commanded six hundred men on the front lines obviously six people aren't gonna be no matter how good they're
armed I'm not going to be able to cordon off a yea dozen square mile area which was what which is how big Tora Boris it
was almost a joke the final assault on Tora Bora was so slow in the making it was so poorly organized that they
look like stragglers going up and stragglers coming down the Americans talked about a siege but I
believe it was more of a sieve in fact everybody who wanted to leave could leave at almost any time individual al
Qaeda members were getting on donkeys they were riding down into the hills and this is just maybe a mile from the media
set up where all the cameras were going so by December 13th most of the people in Tora Bora had escaped I think it's
pretty clear that bin Laden himself an escaped Dalia in fact we reported on the 12th that he
had escaped 10 days earlier but the Americans and the Afghans were still engaged in this offensive when all of
the media was focusing on Tora Bora and those cave busting bombs our Special Forces guys getting killed over there
Osama bin Laden was long gone when Tora Bora started and that was just an exercise in blowing things up Khalid
Sheikh Mohammed looks back upon this time as a period of joy he believed he writes in his confession that he was a
military man and this was a military mission he claims he thought of himself as George Washington an American
revolutionary fighter opposing the superior forces of Great Britain George Washington never won a battle in the
first year of fighting the British but he escaped so many times that the American public was more than willing to
give their sons to fight in the revolution against the British and so by escaping the world's most powerful
military as the sama bin Laden has done a lot of Arab families are willing to give their sons to this battle to fight
the infidel chaos Ayman bin Laden had struck America a vicious blow and we're now avoiding capture by the army of the
West he then slipped out of sight he left with a very small entourage usually in the White Mountains he was traveling
with about 60 men he cropped that down to about a dozen when he left then there were some fighters that would
say to me well even if he did escape you know the road getting into the tribal areas over the mountains is going to be
an incredibly difficult journey he's a sick man he needs dialysis how is it going to do it all indications are that
one of his arms was not moving well because there was a video and it's believed that it was made in the middle
of December with I'm on Izawa hearing in a field with some wild flowers and in this video his his shoulder appears to
not be moving with ease and the suggestion there was that he had been injured in the fighting but we do know
that he's an extraordinary horseman and that he does have a tremendous amount of
determination in fact there may have been a sighting of bin Laden I believe it would have been very early December
it was a brother of one of the warlords who said that oh yes Osama bin Laden he's been in the met he's you know he's
dashing over the snowdrift on a horse I first heard this from Village People they said that there was a very tall man
tall thin man who they saw escaping riding a white horse and of course this all sounds you know
too close to Arabian Nights to be real so none of us took it seriously really the bombing operation was still going on
and when the caves were finally liberated and we could get inside we believed that Osama was still somewhere
higher up within the labyrinth of the caves which were extensive well it was almost a myth in and of
itself I've been a lot and pulling something of a Houdini act even when you think we have in corner the stage was
really set for the tragedy once he got to twirl unless the Americans and the British were going to use our own forces
to go in there and capture him he was going to get away it was there was just no there was no question about that
they were going to take our money as Afghans always do and never do what we want them to do likewise his Afghans
always Tora Bora was a case of it was gonna get done if you were gonna get bin Laden you had to do your own dirty work
and we decided not to and so we lost him Osama bin Laden would travel over there
just like every other trader or Caravan has been since the beginning of time in the Middle East he would have traveled
probably horseback ride donkeys even ride camels from Afghanistan down through the blue chest on area of
