[Music] this is a very affluent area big shopping Community uh major tourist Mecca this is a community where we don't
have a lot of homicides it was very unusual September 13th 2006 the Newport Beach Police Department had a call of a
body in the water Newport Harbor yach club we were the lead investigators on this
case they removed the body from the water that was wrapped in a mattress pad in bed sheets and found a female white
in her 50s with multiple stab wounds it was an extremely big story uh there was of course local news coverage of it who
is the woman found floating in Newport Bay her identity still a mystery the victim wasn't identified until the
autopsy we do have to go through extra Hoops sometimes in this case she had breast implants that had distinct serial
numbers on them and we were able to trace her identity through those serial numbers very
unusual she is Barbara Anne Mullenix 56-year-old female white from the City of Huntington Beach
California she was living with her ex-husband and their daughter it hurts I never thought that the Barbara would be
gone my mom was my life hi Rachel this is your debut hi she was my heart she was my soul she was
she was my everything she was parttime actress she'd do background acting Walk-Ons for
shows she was on CSI she liked it this is a diagram of the body 52 stab wounds is
overkill there was a butter knife in bed in her right eye someone wanted to punish this person
it was clear they wanted her to suffer whoever stabbed Barbara Molen X knew her very
well lady in the harbor tonight's 48 Hours mystery [Music] [Applause] I had a lot of fun with my
mom she had a Wild and Free Spirit she was fun to be around 19-year-old Rachel Mullenix
lights up when she recalls her childhood you little kitty I'll take the ribbon off and you open it I was spoiled
I was it was it was like Disneyland my my life then was was really really really good the only child of Bruce and
Barbara molx she says she always felt a special connection to her mom are you looking forward to
kindergarten yeah we were closer than most mothers and daughters I'm going to learn to be good
you're already good she was one of a kind she was one of a kind she was a lot of fun she was just very
spontaneous I loved her personality it was Barbara's outgoing personality that had caught the
attention of Bruce back in the mid 19 1980s good morning Mr Mullen X she was very
opinionated she wasn't afraid to tell somebody what she thought to me that was attractive it was different it was you
know I I kind of liked it I was taken by her in fact he was taken all the way to
the altar it was November of '87 she had a lot of energy and we made each other happy Bruce was nearly 28 at
the time but Barbara was 9 and 1/2 years older it was her third marriage her first two had failed they were living in
Oklahoma City and within a short time they had Rachel it was just really a good family in the beginning when did it
change when my parents marriage started to end Barbara had a problem amen when she got more and more into the
drinking that things started to get bad and when Barbara got really drunk then it would be a night of intense
verbal bashing it it started to be the the main focus and the main experience in the
house I think it was when I was 12 or 13 maybe and I finally got divorced that was in 2002 Bruce moved to
California free of Barbara or so he thought and the alimon and support my dad was giving her was not enough to
support herself she didn't have any savings and so she was literally on her last
slave so in 2005 3 years after the divorce and against his better judgment Bruce helped his ex-wife and daughter
move cross country and into his small apartment but life had to be awful she's drinking too much the three
of you are all living together I mean it had have been a bad situation it was it
was but it wasn't all bad they were living near Hollywood and Barbara was Star Struck my
mom was very glamorous very glamorous very sophisticated she love the movies and Barbara soon found part-time work as
an extra in Hollywood movies and TV shows they were small roles of course you have to look Clos to actually see
her work right there green sweater with this purse the problem is is that you know you're only in two or three frames
usually you're just somebody walking in the background you're just somebody talking so about one second for 18 hours
of work she she mostly did CSI all the csis I think that's the closest Best Shot that I I remember of everything
that she did I mean there she is so she loves CSI what a tragic irony then that Barbara ended up starring in her own
real life murder mystery a little more than a year after moving to California you never think that another human being
could do something like this to someone else whoever murdered Barbara mullinex not only stabbed her dozens of times
they dumped her body in a taped up cardboard box and dumped it over the edge into the water
which of course had fallen apart in Newport Harbor putting her in a box and dumping her like a piece of trash uh it
just doesn't make any sense to me once the victim was identified detective Steve Mack and Joe cartright
were wondering why no one had reported her missing they were eager to get over to Bruce and Barbara's Huntington Beach
apartment she was wrapped in Bedding it appeared to me that she'd been killed on
a bed and simply wrapped up uh in those those sheets no one was home when police
arrived not Bruce nor Rachel but detectives got a search warrant and went in there was nothing immediately noticed
when you walked in but they did find something strange in an upstairs bedroom a collapsed bed frame with no bed and on
closer inspection some blood spatter on the wall was ultimately discovered by the forensic lab detectives realized
that someone tried hard to clean up the scene in that room I think that the reason that the mattress and the box
spring were missing is because they were saturated in blood police were now convinced that
this is where Barbara mullinex was murdered that fact and the ferociousness of the attack helped confirm for
detectives that this was no random killing and that Barbara knew her as salent attention immediately focused on
Bruce no I understand um I'm the ex-husband we're living in the same condo I have watched crime shows I've
watched 48 hours I've watched I mean the the ex is usually the first person you go to the detectives urgently wanted to
speak with Bruce but as far as they knew he was missing which made them even more
suspicious how good did he look as a suspect he looked very good but one day after Barbara's body was discovered
Bruce did show up at the condo telling detectives that he had been out of town on business and that he became worried
when he couldn't reach Barbara or Rachel I kept calling and I kept calling and nothing I had a terrible sinking
feeling because I thought I haven't heard from them in 2 days and so he says he rushed home only
to be horrified at what he discovered and I started walking up I saw the door to condo open I saw the
yellow crime tape across you know and then I knew it had to be something bad but Steve Mack the
lead detective says Bruce reacted calmly when told his ex-wife had been murdered
too calmly there was no initial shock from him well didn't that look bad it did [Music]
[Music] sunny Southern [Music] California home for the Molen xes picture us from the
outside but inside it was Disneyland one day and then Hill the next day and that's what concerned detectives
investigating the murder of Barbara mullinex in the fall of 2006 there something happened in that
house that provoked the murder 3 years after a painful divorce Bruce and Barbara now just roommates
along with their teenage daughter Rachel were all living under one rather dysfunctional Roof oh it was just really
bad there just arguments just screaming maing what would they argue about money those are their biggest arguments money
she would say something to ra like well you know your dad is spending too much money so you know he's going to
you out on the streets so he can pay the bills but if she so abusive why let her
move in with you Rachel beg me Rachel asked me but Rachel says things went way beyond that
I was known at school as a girl with alcoholic parents Amy both parents but her mother was what
they call a mean drunk Barbara had little half pints all over the condo I mean it was it was
bad she drank and usually got drunk and it wasn't it wasn't nice so no shock then that Rachel turned
to alcohol to escape her parents' divorce I started drinking and I didn't know what else to do or else to turn she
turned on herself cutting her body with razor blades she's beautiful why would she want to hurt herself Rachel's friend
Kelsey Douglas I've never seen like a a really bad side of her Kelsey was often around the MX household in those tense
teenage years she tried really hard to please her mom and when she couldn't she just cried it just made her really
upset I never heard her say anything bad about her mom she loved her mom she really did
would you have described Rachel's mom as abusive to Rachel mentally abusive yeah
definitely but Rachel says she never really blamed her mother my mom had a really difficult life ever since since
she was born she had a really difficult life for example Rachel knew that when her mother was a teenager she had been
raped perhaps that's why Barbara was was so understanding when at 15 Rachel herself became pregnant and eventually
had an abortion she took it real calm she wasn't mad at me she didn't scold me she
just she helped me deal with the situation but little things would send Barbara into a rage detective Mack
wondered did Barbara's drinking cause Bruce to snap and kill her he told me you know right now you're my number one
suspect so I have to ask you all these questions there was one problem with that theory Bruce's story that he was
out of town the night of Barbara's murder checked out you had an ironclad Alibi didn't you yeah and and I and I
knew that so that left investigators at square one they took a closer look at what was going on inside the Molen X
home and learned that Rachel had a new boyfriend Ian Allen and Barbara was feeling left out she began to get a
little more worried about being alone at some point and that's why she was trying
to control Rachel and I think that was the big source of the friction between the
two 21-year-old Ian Allen was four years older than Rachel and he had Wheels his
own truck he looked at her in the eyes a lot and stuff and just you know was focused on her he was a great catch
I fell hard and fast early in the budding relationship Ian would do chores for Barbara then
hang around the house sometimes he came over and I think he would sit there and watch a movie with them in the living
room but the atmosphere soon changed as things became more intense and Ian and Barbara started to compete
if you will for control of Rachel then that's when Ian started to get a taste of who Barbara really
was Barbara was very [Music] intimidating within a few short months 17-year-old Rachel and 21-year-old Ian
announced their engagement and Rachel pushed her parents into signing this very unusual document
in July of 2006 they wrote a note to whom it may concern uh I give permission to Ian Allen to date our daughter Ian
carried it in his wallet not wanting to risk arrest for statuto rape so basically your parents signed a
document that said it was okay for you to have sex with Ian I guess you could say that I mean she would have been
sexually active anyways but in light of the fact that she had been pregnant in the past I mean it does sound like
Rachel had a lot of control in your household and I understand what you're saying but
that it it wasn't like that Bru says Ian was adding to Barbara's anxiety over losing
Rachel the more serious that Rachel was getting with thean Barbara thought that this idea that she's going to kind of
have Rachel to help her survive after Rachel turns 18 or when my money stops I think that was now being threatened and
the threat was Ian then late One Summer Night in 2006 When Rachel failed to meet her strict 1
a.m. curfew after a date with Ian her mother exploded my mom shows up at his house just humiliating but she ended up
waking up his parents yeah and was she angry yeah she was angry was she making a scene yeah I
thought she'd overreacted I was mad but you get over it how did Ian feel about her showing up Ian was livid he was
[Music] livid Just 4 days later Barbara Molen X's body was found floating in Newport
Harbor Police wanted to question Rachel and Ian but they were nowhere to be found if Ian did this then Rachel's in
danger and that's why she didn't call me that's the first thing I thought where is Rachel could you locate enl no we
could not find him I put out an all points bulletin to be on the lookout for Ian and Rachel and their pickup
truck that was such a passionate violent crime even veteran detectives were shocked by
the brutality of Barbara mullen's murder and I can't imagine what she went through just as disturbing is where the
clues were leading with Barbara's ex-husband Bruce cleared detective Mack began looking at
two other suspects and he said and I think uh I think Rachel and Ian did it [Music]
I I couldn't process that I couldn't process it did you know where Rachel was at that moment no had
she tried to call you no both Rachel and Ian had been missing since Barbara's body had been found the
detectives believed that wherever they were they were together the more we talked to Bruce
Mullen and learn the family Dynamics the more became clear to me that there's a good
likelihood that both Ian Allen and Rachel Mullenix could be responsible for this
crime investigators got a break when they checked the computer at Ian's home and discovered that just hours after the
crime someone had printed driving directions to Tampa Florida cops got another break when they learned that Ian's
credit card had been used in the state of Louisiana at a gas station in a place called
sulfur about 1700 mil from home surveillance cameras there recorded his truck pulling up to a gas pump
authorities began moving in we knew that they had just been there Orange County prosecutor Sonia baste so we called the
next town over uh which is Lafayette Parish and they set up on the I 10 looking for Ian's truck and he was
stopped I was thrown on the ground handcuffs on that was a very scary situation and now they're
treating me like I'm some criminal 48 hours later detectives cartright and Mack were in Louisiana to
question Rachel and Ian you are under arrest for the murder of your mother do you know that I was kidnapped do you
know that I know that's what you're saying what do you mean that's what I'm saying we have physical evidence to the
contrary what do you what you mean I couldn't believe they were going to charge me with
murder I was I was beyond shocked why not though I mean because I didn't do it that's why I was
just she claimed Ian had murdered her mother I was asleep it was the middle of the night I heard my mom scream my name
I ran in her room and I saw Ian standing there on top of her stabbing her I tried to push him off but he
pushed me off and knocked me out Rachel claimed she remembered nothing after that until she regained
Consciousness in a nearby Motel bound and gagged by Ian but when police checked out her story
there was no record of them being there she doesn't have a single wound to be consistent with even being shoved
against furniture by now authorities were beginning to believe that 17-year-old Rachel had made up the entire kidnapping
story I think the only thing she told me that was the truth was her name Rachel continued to insist she was
only a bystander to murder that Ian forced her to help clean up the crime scene dispose of her mother's car and
body along with several bags of her mother's personal belongings she says Ian's plan was to
make it appear as if Barbara had suddenly moved away and you had a woman who actually
wouldn't be missed why not she didn't have a job that she had to go report to every day um she didn't have that sort
of interaction with her neighbors the prosecutor says Rachel was no kidnap victim take a look at the surveillance
video from that Louisiana gas station where Ian and Rachel had stopped where Ian actually goes to use
the ATM card and Rachel is free roaming around the store getting something to drink um paying for it herself and then
going about her way meeting up with Ian again um sort of in a very loving manner you don't look upset you're not
hysterical you don't ask anyone for help you don't leave a note for someone why not nobody knows what they're going to
do in this situation nobody and I was scared of what him I didn't know what he's going to do next
isn't that possible she's just trying to keep Ian comfortable and not get him angry
with her she had just seen him kill her mother no I don't believe so Rachel says she
was only cooperating with Ian because he had threatened her with a gun he had taken from his home but that's another
claim the prosecutor says that doesn't hold up when you examine the gun for DNA the major contributor is Rachel
Mullenix but when Ian Allen meets with California detectives they going to be talking to you okay okay incredibly he
backs up stop Rachel's story Ian told me that he was in fact totally responsible uh for the attack on Barbara
Mullen X I was going there intending to threaten her to scare her and got out of
control very quickly I held the knife right to her throat and she just started screaming Rachel Rachel help me he's
trying to kill me and why would Ian kill Barbara Molen X Ian was being fed uh part truth and mostly Lies by Rachel
that uh her mother was out to ruin his life and his family's life Ian refused to talk to 48 hours but authorities
believe he continued lying to them to protect Rachel she didn't need to be locked up
or anything I made her come with me if I can get her back home to her dad where she belongs you're not that's not going
to happen [Music] she didn't care what happened to he an allen anymore because he's no used to her now
she's been caught Rachel MX thinks that people are disposable to her well let me ask you
another question about Ian so what he's an and he deserves to go to prison that's not my
determination how would you describe Rachel Molen x a sociopath one of the most manipulative people I've ever
met not only does Sonia baste think Rachel participated in the Murder She Believes the sweet looking teenager
planned it but Rachel even after being caught in a lie about the kidnapping insists she would never kill her
mother but if you would lie to the police then why should people believe you now really look and evaluate the
evidence they have no proof Pro that I killed my mom because I didn't but is Rachel lying is it possible this teenage
girl helped murder the mother she claims was the most important person in her life Rachel will get a chance to tell
her story to a jury she and IEM will both face trial separately for first-degree
murder this is a nightmare anybody I didn't kill my mom want my mom your mother was brutally
murdered what my mom and she's not coming [Music] back I'm very nervous I'm very scared
nearly 2 years after both Rachel moleno and Ian Allen were arrested for murdering her mother Barbara
Rachel is the first to go on trial I have to hope that the truth will come out if I don't have that I have
nothing but just what is the truth still a teenager at 19 is Rachel a coldblooded
killer or a battered girlfriend who watched helplessly as her boyfriend committed
murder Ian was the biggest mistake of my life he was abusive it was like I was property and if
somebody was hurting his property or threaten to take his property away it just wasn't was not going to
happen don't convict me for something I didn't do I'm behind her 100% I have been from the day she was born up until
now none of that's changed do you feel in any way responsible for your mother's death no but prosecutor Sonia baste
describes a very different young woman Rachel molx is an active participant in her mother's murder a cold manipulative
killer she's no typical 17-year-old this one's 17 going on 42 Rachel molx had nothing to do with the
killing of her mother you're going to hear while Rachel's attorney David con insists that Ian Allen and only Ian
Allen murdered Barbara mullinex he knows convincing the jury won't be easy well I
went into this case hoping she wasn't guilty of anything I realize that technically my client is guilty of
accessory after the fact and that definitely hurts in this case Co has to explain to that jury why Rachel helped
Ian clean up after the murder just like a Minefield there were many landmines laid in in front of me in this
case start with the crime scene itself Barbara's bedroom and the cleanup involves getting rid of the bed which
had to be a complete mess um and burning that mattress getting that mattress and box spring out
of the house the prosecutor says it took two people to get rid of the evidence Ian and Rachel the bed's burning remains
were found not far from the condo and there's more she cleaned up her mother's blood as evidenced by a sponge that
contains her mother's blood and her DNA this is the sponge that was found on the
nightstand next to where Barbara's bed would have been police found that sponge on a nightstand in Barbara's
bedroom still police could find no hard physical evidence that directly links Rachel to the murder of her mom either
planning it or carrying it out isn't it possible that Ian planned this whole thing on his own and carried it all out
not if you read all the text messages no in the 3 days leading up to the murder there were over 464 four text
messages from Rachel to Ian's phone lead investigator Steve Mack says one text message in particular points directly at
Rachel's involvement saying we have two options run or Tuesday or there's another option you come over and
apologize to my mother run or Tuesday Max says the words are part of a code Tuesday could have been their word
for murder we either run or we kill my mother and Tuesday was the day Barbara MX died that night
yes but Rachel insists the word or in run or Tuesday is just a typo but if you look in all my other text messages there
are plenty of typos that I've written Rachel says the message should have read run on Tuesday there was a plan she says
but it wasn't to murder her mom my plan was turn away that was my plan if he had another ulterior motive I
didn't know about it Rachel's fate May hinge on how jur view that one word in her message to Ian
was it part of a code for murder or just a simple typing error jurors for them to
believe that she was not guilty of conspiring to kill her mother or killing her mother they were going to have to
hear it from her raise your right hand cler was where you in so Rachel takes the stand to try to explain what
happened on that horrendous night of murder I was going to wait until um my mom was asleep I would call him and tell
him to come get me that was the plan so what happened then he like literally shows up outside my bedroom door it just
it freaked me out my mom had woken up she opened the door she said what are you doing here I'm going to call the
police and say you're trying to kidnap my daughter she turned around walked back into her bedroom I just assumed
maybe he was going to go in there and try to just calm her down before anything happened but I heard a
struggle so I went in there and I walk in and I see my mom on her bed and Ian is stabbing her in her legs
cuz she's trying to kick him off that's Rachel's version but does her story matched the evidence pathologist
Shan Eno who did the autopsy on Barbara Mullenix says Rachel's mom was stabbed more than 50 times and that at least
three knives were used in the murder including a folding pocket knife that belonged to Ian a longer knife that was
never recovered and that butter knife penetrating deep into Barbara's skull I I believe it is more likely that it was
two asants than one and that could have been as few as maybe 5 minutes for the whole encounter I but I I don't know for
sure Rachel insists she was not involved but claims she can't remember the actual
stabbing how did one person use all these knives I Rachel you were there you had
the light on how was he doing it I couldn't tell you the only thing I thought about was getting him away from
her I tried pushing him I tried pulling him away I tried how did you manage is not to have one single cut on you if
you're really trying to fight him he wasn't trying to stab me he was trying to stab her how did you know she was
dead she'd stopped moving did it ever occur to you Miss Mullenix that she might just be unconscious due to the
loss of blood no you don't know that she's dead maybe there's a chance to save her did
you try to call 911 no did you even take her pulse to see if she was dead no no a
lot of people judge me because of this and it's not fair but why didn't you run out the door and get help for
your mother I was scared it's like I freeze in fear was there time after her mother was murdered that she could have
either gone for help called for help numerous endless endless opportunities the thought of him coming
after me if I left was enough to keep me there I didn't know what he was capable
of doing but some 4 hours after her mother's murder left alone in the condo while Ian was getting rid of evidence
Rachel finally picked up the telephone out of all the people that you could call now that you have your phone
in your hand and that you feel that you can use it you don't call your dad right
no you don't call 911 no you call your mother's killer right correct you must have felt incredibly
betrayed by him yes yes you must have even hated him at that point right yes and out of all the things that you
could have said to him you text him the words I love you is that correct [Music]
yes today a jury began deliberations in the daughter's murder trial kk9 or with no physical evidence tying Rachel
mullinex to the actual murder of her mom she hoped the jury would never be able to convict her of first deegree
murder I was hoping they were going through the evidence and really trying to understand
the case I had hopes I had small hopes so did her high school friend Kelsey Douglas Kelsey cannot believe Rachel
could help kill the mother she had always loved did you think Rachel might be involved not at all not at all not at
all didn't even cross my mind when he said ITP I stood up and I'm no way if Rachel did love her mother why
would she Stand By and allow someone else to kill her and then help him clean up and run away with him Rachel her
whole life has been trying to make the best of a bad situation at 48 Hours request Dr Al
ravitz a child psychiatrist reviewed documents from Rachel's trial including testimony of a defense expert who told
the jury Rachel suffered from a borderline personality disorder when she said to me she really
loved her mom she meant it at that moment yes absolutely she meant it she loves her mother but she also hates her
mother when her mother frustrates her people with borderline personality disorders engage in impulsive typically
self-destructive behaviors but destructive behaviors as well while Dr rabitz has not treated Rachel he says
that typically those with a borderline personality disorder are unable to plan for the long term she may have been the
instigator in the moment but I don't think was The Mastermind she wasn't Lex Luther here and like others with a
disorder Rachel was terrified of being abandoned and that Terror drives the great majority of their behavior and
they're going to do anything they can to keep you around including murder if she
wanted to keep you in if in fact right yes but detective Steve ma says you don't need fancy psychological terms to
describe Rachel she's evil she's the most evil 17-year-old girl I've ever spoken to in my life you believe that
absolutely what really matters is what the jurors believe and it took them three long days to reach a decision when
they called and said there was a verdict I I was I was hesitant to be too excited about it the defendant Shackled
and suddenly sporting Pigtails in her hair all right the verdicts seem to be in order all last that the clerk read
returns to judge Thompson's courtroom to learn her fate we the jury in the above
entitled action find the defendant Rachel Scarlet Mullenix guilty of the crime of murder as charging count one of
the information in the first degree victim guilty a first degree murder in the brutal stabbing of her mother
Barbara I heard him say guilty of first degree murder do not and I heard my grandma scream
out that's pretty much all I heard the ultimate manipulation are you're about to convict a little girl prosecutor
Sonia baste on this case for two years felt relief what's really scary about Rachel is how young she is and how in a
way criminally sophisticated she is but Rachel insists the jury got it all wrong
and she is appealing the verdict I'm just a young girl that that did the wrong guy I didn't do it I know I didn't
do it my mom knows I Didn't Do It Come order for now session nearly 3 months after trial Rachel Mullenix was
sentenced to 25 years to life life in prison her first chance of parole will be in 2030 when she's 41 years
old her father says nothing can change how he feels about her do you still love her I still love her
completely completely and I always will I'm very proud that she's my daughter very proud
[Music] and as Rachel's future stretches before her it's not her brokenhearted father
she seems worried about or even the terrible tragedy of her mother's death Rachel remains focused on
herself what do I have to look for to the dreams of me wanting to have a family and getting married and going to
college they're gone I don't get that now I'll be an inmate now what are you going to
D I'm going to learn to be good you're already good [Music] [Music]
