these stories seen and not heard either the mistress the long-suffering wife or more likely the widow but
there's another side of the mobs game in the 20th century with players like Mussolini
J Edgar Hoover and the Kennedy brothers politicians are paid off to look the other way
nightclub dollars pour into the hands of mobsters dirty cops and gay performers you're talking about New York City's
very first drag clubs and the woman that's right a woman who ran them a woman named Anna Genovese
and a crash through a sea of male chauvinism to become a rule-breaker and ship disturb her this woman did
something no other mob wife has done before or since she stood up to her husband in the most courageous way
possible [Music] who was this mop queen with the insight and ability to write her own ticket in a
man's world that's what we want to know who is Ana Genovese [Music] I'm Jessica bending her on Michael
Seligmann this is Mark Queens [Music] Anna was the goddess you looked right at her I knew she was a force to be
reckoned with any decent guy would never let their wife or girl for know their business I think in the village of truth
in fiction there's just no story - outrageous what's she much more complicit than the
family legend I just felt like maybe other people we're watching her wait a minute wait a minute before we get
started who are you I'm Jessica bending girl I wrote a little cheerleading satire called bring
it on I recently learned is in the gay Canon which made me a very happy by the way it is officially in there yeah what
about you Michael who are you Oh Who am I well I am also a writer I work on a TV
show called RuPaul's Drag Race and I've written four shows like mysteries and scandals an e true Hollywood story so to
be clear there isn't a book that's been written about Anna Genovese there isn't a magazine article a miniseries a
biography on the History Channel we couldn't even find an obituary or a grave marker
yeah I mean in fact if you take what almost five years of research or what 18 out of print books smore dozens of
newspaper articles and a handful of court records that we've collected and put them all together the information in
all of that material specific to any genevese fills about maybe a dozen pages yeah I mean people don't realize that
the drag we know today it goes back to the mob to Anna Genovese and a whole lot of Queens in the first half of the 20th
century in New York City and that's why we're here yeah that's why we're here because we are gonna tell
the story of Anna Pattillo bring the Chico Genovese March 1953 mrs. Genovese pulls the rug
from under her gangster husband Vito Genovese and began putting on the record the
inside story of the Costello crime syndicates the fashionably dressed 48 year old mr. Genovese charged that her
husband has quote his sticky fingers in almost all the rackets this is the New York Daily News article that first draws
our attention to Anna Genovese way back at the beginning of our research and the
articles from 1953 so of course the woman doesn't even get her own name she's just mrs. Vito Genovese Vito who
by the way is one of the most murderous madmen in mop history so this is Anna testifying against her husband in open
court I mean this is so unprecedented and she is talking she has given up the goods the locations the codes she's not
