If you're in here, announce yourself. Julia Shaw: In the US, four students murdered in the dead of night.
Ben Dewitt: Someone killed these four, and they're going to get away with it. Julia Shaw: As cameras pick up a stranger lurking in the dark.
- You can hear screeching tires as it's leaving the area. This is our suspect. [screeching tires]
Julia Shaw: And in the UK-- - Threw the candle right at me. I can't breathe. Julia Shaw: --a romantic relationship ends with a stab
to the heart. Man 1: We knew something was going to happen but not to this extent.
[theme music] ♪ ♪ Man 2: It just sounds like something bad is happening to her.
Woman: We know what happened because the video tells us what happened. Man 3: I heard some gunshots. [gunfire]
- I think they heard the gun. ♪ ♪ - Man, that's good. Man 4: The camera doesn't lie.
[tense music] Julia Shaw: In the US, Idaho, the town of Moscow. Over 10,000 students, known as the Vandals,
in a small campus community. Lauren Paterson: Imagine you live in a quiet, peaceful town
that no one's really heard of. And then a horrific crime happens. We just weren't prepared for the attention
we were about to get. [line ringing] [siren blaring] Anthony Dahlinger: A student had
found one of their roommates unconscious. It was a lot of emotion, a lot of frantic misunderstanding
of what was going on. [siren blaring] - We didn't get much information beyond that.
Officer 2: Where's she at? Where's she at? - She's closer, you know, closer. Yes.
[chatter] Officer 2: Where at? Up here? Officer 3: Up here, up here. Officer 2: Slow down.
Just come here. There's two. Looks like fatalities. [tense music] ♪ ♪ OK, get back.
Anthony Dahlinger: Our officer immediately recognized that two of the individuals were deceased.
They were beyond help. They appear to have been stabbed and that this was a crime scene.
Julia Shaw: Officers searched the house to see if the students were still in danger.
♪ ♪ officer 1: Moscow Police Department. If you're in here, announce yourself. ♪ ♪
Anthony Dahlinger: That was when they discovered the other two victims on the third floor
in the bedroom. officer 2: Oh, man. [sighs] - There was a lot of blood. Some of the victims were stabbed dozens of times.
Julia Shaw: Six students slept at the house that night. Only two survived. Ben Dewitt: Violence and bad things
happens on campus in universities around the nation. Not things of, like, this nature.
♪ ♪ Anthony Dahlinger: We've got four college students deceased. We have detectives on scene.
We had patrol cordoning off the area. We had college students standing around that were distraught.
And we were having to try to start from ground zero. news anchor: A manhunt is underway for the person
responsible for murdering four University of Idaho students in their off-campus home last week.
- So far, no suspects have been identified in the attack. officer 2: OK, I'm gonna start IDing all of them.
- The victims were Xana Kernodle, her boyfriend, Ethan Chapin, Kaylee Goncalves, and
Madison Mogen. - These are four young college students. They were in the prime of their life.
Kaylee and Maddie both grew up in the Coeur d'Alene area. They were best friends from a very young age.
Ben Dewitt: Xana and I went to the same high school. I remember her for her sense of humor
and doing or saying funny, silly things. Lauren Paterson: The girls were all roommates living
together in this big house. And Ethan was Xana's boyfriend, so he was around a lot, too.
They were all 20 and 21 years old. Anthony Dahlinger: I-- I couldn't stop imagining the utter terror that they
were experiencing, especially with the brutality of this crime. Julia Shaw: One of the students who
survived the night witnessed a sinister presence in the house. Anthony Dahlinger: We're just going to be looking for who
did this and how it was done. On the third floor, we found a knife sheath near Maddie, immediately recognized that this
was left by the killer. That sheath was collected to immediately identify fingerprints, DNA, any kind of evidence
we could get from that sheath. Julia Shaw: The police had to rely on the survivors
to work out exactly what happened in the middle of the night. Julia Shaw: By 1:45 AM, Xana and Ethan had also
returned home from a party. Julia Shaw: The roommate heard a commotion around 4:00 AM.
Anthony Dahlinger: She opened her door. She recalled seeing a male figure dressed in all black.
Anthony Dahlinger: It wasn't until the next day when they woke up mid-morning, and no one was responding.
And that's when they called 911. Shawn Katz: What we know is it was a Saturday night.
People were partying. It's a party house. People would be drunk. They're coming and going.
The roommate hears a weird sound. She sees a strange person. But people regularly come and go.
I could understand why it wouldn't immediately raise alarm bells. You're not thinking, in a safe town,
in a safe house, that something sinister would be happening. Julia Shaw: The police had a timeline and
a description of the suspect. But they needed neighborhood cameras to find the missing
pieces of the puzzle. Anthony Dahlinger: Our forensics detectives were able to get video surveillance
footage from King Road. We recognized that we had this white vehicle coming and going multiple times.
This, in and of itself, not particularly suspicious. I mean, we don't have a lot of vehicles in that
area at 3:30 in the morning. But who knows? Julia Shaw: But minutes later, the driver returned.
Anthony Dahlinger: Now we're approaching quarter to 4:00. Here comes that-- the white vehicle again, again,
kind of coming in slowly, methodically, with purpose. This is nearing the time that we know the homicides occurred.
We have this white vehicle circling the area. So this starts raising your suspicion.
Julia Shaw: Over the next 20 minutes, the mysterious driver continued to circle the area.
But just after 4:00 AM, around the time when the roommate heard Kaylee crying in the bathroom, the camera
captured a change in behavior. Anthony Dahlinger: Now, this is very odd. The white vehicle appears to leave or going to leave
and then almost makes this decision of, nope, I'm gonna turn around. So instead of leaving the area, it
turns around and heads back towards 1122 King Road, as if a decision has been made.
[suspenseful music] ♪ ♪ We knew at this point, all of the residents of 1122 King Road
were back at home. Julia Shaw: For 15 minutes, all was quiet. Then a rapid change.
[tires squealing] - So at 4:20, this vehicle is now leaving at a high rate of speed, almost loses control.
You can hear screeching tires as it's leaving the area. [tires squealing] Highly suspicious.
We knew when we saw this, this is our suspect. [tires squealing, engine roaring]
That video was just hugely important because looking at other cameras in the area,
we were able to build this picture of the whereabouts of this white car. Julia Shaw: Footage from other cameras
showed the mystery car had stalked the town for days before. Video analysis identified the vehicle as a Hyundai Elantra.
Anthony Dahlinger: We start running through our police systems, trying to see how many white Hyundai Elantras there
were registered in our area. And there were tens of thousands. Julia Shaw: As the driver left Moscow, police lost the trail.
[tense music] ♪ ♪ Back on campus, a fear of an unknown killer on the loose. Ben Dewitt: It was right before Thanksgiving break.
A lot of people just went home because they didn't want to be in Moscow. There's a murderer running around.
It could have been anyone. That paranoia and that uncertainty kind of made things a little scary.
James Fry: We do not have a suspect at this time, and that individual is still out there.
We cannot say that there's no threat to the community. Julia Shaw: Three days after the murders,
police had to address the growing public concern that the killer walked amongst them.
James Fry: We're reviewing video. But we are asking citizens to contact us with any information
you may have. Lauren Paterson: A lot of times, people are killed by someone who knows the victims.
So people started blaming boyfriends, friends, you know, looking at people in the background,
trying to figure out, well, who would do this? Julia Shaw: Tips and footage poured
in of Kaylee, Maddie, Xana, and Ethan's last night alive. Anthony Dahlinger: We had surveillance footage
from almost any restaurant, gas station, businesses that had video. Julia Shaw: Kaylee and Maddie were
captured on surveillance camera in a bar just hours before their deaths. Anthony Dahlinger: We were able to follow
the path of Kaylee and Maddie, paying attention to who's around them. And ultimately, there was nothing suspicious about it.
It was just two young, college-aged females leaving the bar, going downtown to get
a bite to eat before they went home and finished their evening. cook: I do have a big burrito pork here for ya.
- Cool, thank you. cook: $40.78 Thank you very much. Julia Shaw: In a thorough investigation,
police tracked down and ruled out everyone in the videos. Anthony Dahlinger: The more we learned
about the four victims is that they didn't have enemies. They weren't involved in nefarious things,
and they were just your typical college students. Julia Shaw: Six weeks went by, and
the killer was still at large. [tense music] ♪ ♪ Ben Dewitt: Myself and other people on campus were worried.
Because after, like, a month and a half and they're not sharing any details on a suspect,
we're getting worried that, like, someone killed these four, and they're going to get away with it.
Julia Shaw: It took traditional forensics to provide a breakthrough. Anthony Dahlinger: The Idaho State Police Lab
were able to build a complete profile of this DNA on the knife sheath and compare it to multiple DNA
companies, where people can submit their DNA and find out their ancestry. The profile from the knife sheath
pointed us in a direction of a particular family in Pullman, Washington. Looking at that family tree, we find a WSU student that
owned a white Hyundai Elantra. Julia Shaw: The make and model matched the vehicle caught on camera near the murder scene.
Anthony Dahlinger: That's when everything really started coming together. This was our primary suspect.
And his name is Bryan Kohberger. The first time that I saw a picture of him, I said to myself, how is this person involved?
Who is this Bryan Kohberger guy? Julia Shaw: There was no evidence linking Bryan Kohberger to any of the victims.
He had no history of violence. Investigators pulled his only recorded interaction
with police. Anthony Dahlinger: We found out that he had been stopped for an unrelated traffic
offense months prior. sheriff: Hey, there. - Hi. sheriff: I stopped you going a little fast.
You realize this is 35? - Oh, it's 35? sheriff: It is, yeah. So-- - --going about 41.
sheriff: Yeah, 43 was what the radar said. Were you wearing your seat belt when I stopped ya?
- No. sheriff: No? [chuckles] - Just being honest with you. sheriff: Yeah, I appreciate that.
sheriff: Yeah, yeah. Julia Shaw: Bryan Kohberger seemed inquisitive about police techniques.
- People will often reveal themselves in things they say, questions they ask. So Bryan might have thought he was just being clever and
interesting in what would happen, as if it was a benign, innocent question. But he was asking the police questions about lying,
about being found out. It was really, really not the normal way you would respond or
deal with a policeman when pulled over of, like, what would happen if I lied? I mean, that is looking for information about what
could he get away with. sheriff: Can I get a phone number from you? Bryan Kohberger: Yeah, why?
sheriff: We need to put it on the-- the citation because it goes to the court. - We were able to get his phone number.
And then our detectives, utilizing all the things, started asking for search warrants for everything,
for phone records, for social media, you name it. Julia Shaw: Bryan Kohberger's historic online posts
painted a picture of declining mental health. - We started to learn a lot about who he was as a person.
Kohberger was known as kind of the socially awkward kid in school. [tense music]
♪ ♪ Shawn Katz: This Reddit post that Bryan wrote when he was 17 I find really,
really disturbing and tragic. He mentions depersonalization, delusions of grandeur,
having no emotion. It demonstrates a real disturbed adolescent and a bit of a cry for help.
If he had years of isolation, years of not belonging, years of not being noticed,
and to then look for a house where there's a lot of activity and a lot of fun and a party house,
it could certainly be acting out some kind of resentment or hurt or envy for some young kids that
are having a good life and a life that perhaps he wants or doesn't have and feels really bad and lonely.
So it certainly could give a motivation to why he would have murdered four innocent students.
♪ ♪ - He had gotten his undergraduate master's and then was working on his PhD in criminology.
- He had applied for an internship with the Pullman Police, but he didn't get it.
He'd even done a Reddit survey at one time talking about what motivates criminals
to commit atrocities. Julia Shaw: But it was a survey of Bryan Kohberger's online purchase history that really stopped
detectives in their tracks. Anthony Dahlinger: He had bought a Ka-Bar knife and sheath that matched the sheath that we
recovered from the scene. Julia Shaw: Bryan Kohberger's phone also offered up his exact location
the morning after the murders. At the same time as first responders were discovering
the students' bodies at the house, Bryan was caught on camera 35 miles south of Moscow,
shopping for groceries. - This is footage from the Costco down in Clarkston, Washington, from the day of the 13th.
This individual, who is suspected of just murdering four college students, relatively
nonchalant, walking around, drinking a bottle of water. Doesn't appear to be nervous or shaken up at all.
♪ ♪ Near the Costco area there, there is a shopping center with a grocery store.
♪ ♪ This doesn't point to a lot of emotional attachment to what he just did, potentially.
It could also speak to maybe an internal belief that he's gonna get away with this.
♪ ♪ Julia Shaw: After six weeks, officers finally had enough video and forensic evidence
for an arrest. Anthony Dahlinger: The SWAT team entered the home. They took him into custody very quickly.
I just felt a wave of relief. James Fry: Last night, in conjunction with the Pennsylvania State Police, the Federal Bureau
of Investigation, detectives arrested 28-year-old Bryan Christopher Kohberger in Albrightsville, Pennsylvania,
on a warrant for murders of Ethan, Xana, Madison, and Kaylee. Julia Shaw: Bryan Kohberger decided not to cooperate
with law enforcement. Police began to search his home. Anthony Dahlinger: Inside the garage,
we found the white Hyundai Elantra. Julia Shaw: And the car's GPS data tied Bryan Kohberger
to the murder scene. Anthony Dahlinger: We saw that he had traveled to Moscow on several occasions.
And then after the homicides, that completely changed. He never came back to Moscow.
He was guilty of these murders. Shawn Katz: It's just really tragically sad that simply by being happy and connected
and having a good social network and friendships, that that would make you the target of someone's
own internal struggle. They didn't do anything wrong other than they're just themselves, and
they were happy and connected. It's tragic. Anthony Dahlinger: He was subject to a cheek
swab for DNA. The results of that showed one-to-one unequivocally his DNA was the DNA on the knife sheath
found at 1122 King Road. [curious music] ♪ ♪ Julia Shaw: Law enforcement prepared for trial.
But at the last minute, Bryan Kohberger struck a deal with prosecutors. To avoid the death penalty, he pleaded guilty.
Anthony Dahlinger: To watch him come into the courtroom and state that he was guilty and he did this
and he murdered these four innocent souls was shocking. Julia Shaw: The judge handed down four life sentences,
one for each life he took. Anthony Dahlinger: Bryan Kohberger killed four innocent people.
And now he is going to die in prison for it. [solemn music] ♪ ♪ Having both the DNA and the surveillance footage
leading us to the car was how we solved this case. ♪ ♪ Lauren Paterson: I would like Xana, Ethan, Kaylee, and Maddie
to be remembered for the bright, beautiful young people that they were. They were loving, friendly people.
Ben Dewitt: Xana was always kind to, you know, just about everyone I knew. There was a profound sense of sadness.
They were good people. They touched a lot of people's lives. ♪ ♪ [dramatic music]
♪ ♪ Julia Shaw: From time to time, people seem to kill seemingly at random. And their motives remain uncomfortably elusive.
But in some murder cases, we have intimate partners, and we have a steady escalation with known risk factors
where people think that getting hurt is kind part of the deal. And it's not OK, and I don't like it.
But I love this person so much that I'm willing to look past their flaws, and almost that to love
is to suffer. ♪ ♪ [tense music] In the UK, in the West Midlands, the small village of Norton Canes.
Home to Louis Price and his family. It was Christmas Day 2024. Abbie Reidy: My husband's phone rang just before 5
o'clock Christmas morning. He answered it, and all-- all I could hear was, "He's dead."
♪ ♪ I got my house keys to my mom and my dad's, and it was all cordoned off. There was police cars everywhere.
[police radio chatter] And the policeman approached me, and he informed me that Louis had passed.
[solemn music] ♪ ♪ I just-- I dropped to the floor, to my knees, and I just-- I was just screaming.
♪ ♪ I tried to call Mom because they were in Africa. But the call just bounced.
So I called my dad. - Things like this don't happen to us. Everybody's worst nightmare.
- Yep. ♪ ♪ - I went home. And just as I walked through my front door, my son was just waking up, and he
was at the top of the stairs. And he just wanted to come down and open his presents from Santa.
But my whole world had ended at that point. I composed myself as much as I could.
And then I just-- we tried to get through the day as normal as we could because I couldn't tell my children.
It was Christmas Day. Julia Shaw: The manner of Louis's abrupt death was clear at the scene.
Steve Keogh: Police found a 31-year-old Louis Price with a fatal 12-centimeter wound to his chest.
There was nothing they could have done for Louis. They found the knife at the scene, the knife
that they believed was used to kill Louis, and took it into evidence. [line ringing]
Julia Shaw: The mystery of who killed Louis didn't last long. Steve Keogh: Police received a phone call
from a man saying that his stepdaughter had confessed to stabbing her ex-partner.
Police arrived at the parents of Kirsty Carless, and she was arrested. constable 1: Is it Kirsty? - Yeah.
constable 1: I need you to stand up for me, love. - I'm putting my socks on. - Kirsty Carless was 33 years old.
She and Louis had a child together. constable 1: Kirsty, listen to us. - Yeah. constable 1: I'm arresting you for the murder of Louis Price.
I must caution you don't have to say anything, but it may harm your defense if you do not
mention when questioned something which they later rely on in court. Anything you do say may be given in evidence.
Turn around for me, love. Have you got anything on you that you shouldn't have? - No, no.
Stephanie Wareham: Our news desk reported on a woman being charged with murder. Kirsty said there is a history of domestic violence.
When I heard that, I was questioning, is this reactive abuse? Or is it completely the opposite?
Is she the violent aggressor? [solemn music] ♪ ♪ Sam Price: People use the expression
"the life of the party." Louis wasn't the life of the party. He was the party ever since he was a kid.
entertainer: # Because they just have fun ♪ - He was the heart of our family. He was-- he was the joker.
But he was-- he was lovely. Abbie Reidy: He adored fishing. He was constantly on the bank fishing with my dad.
Julia Shaw: The Prices were a close-knit family. Even after all the children grew up and moved out,
Louis kept a caravan in his parents' yard. Graham Price: The caravan was his safe place.
He could sit in his caravan, play on his game, smoke his cigarettes. That was his space.
You know, it belonged to him. Julia Shaw: But outside of his safe space, he struggled and found it hard to ask for help.
Abbie Reidy: Even from a young age, he always had, like, a mask. And this mask was always on.
He wouldn't ever tell us the major things that were going on with his life. He kept all that private.
He believed a man shouldn't cry, a man shouldn't feel emotional. My wedding day, it was probably the most emotional we've
been with each other, really. It was quite special. - Good evening, ladies and gentlemen.
For those who don't know me, my name is Louis. And I've been charged today with the task
of being Bryan's best man and providing you with this beautiful speech. [laughter]
Julia Shaw: Louis's relationship also began in a romantic fashion in 2020 when he met Kirsty.
Abbie Reidy: They seemed happy. Louis seemed like he was doing good for himself.
He'd got himself a new job. We thought, you know, he's finally met someone that's-- that's gonna be good for him.
When Kirsty fell pregnant, he was absolutely over the moon. It was just a little child to give his all to
and his love and his attention. - But then things started to go wrong. He wasn't his cheeky self.
It was as if she was keeping him away. Graham Price: 18 months into the relationship,
things started to change. It was often when we was out fishing, Louis was saying,
you know, she'd done this or took his money or she'd been drunk. That's when a picture started to unfold
of what she was actually like. Sam Price: She kept promising she was going to change.
But it was getting really bad. There was a lot of arguments, a lot of jealousy, a lot of accusations.
Abbie Reidy: The arguing turned to fighting. Things were being thrown. Things were being smashed.
Eleanor Price: There's two sides to every story. And it was-- it was a toxic relationship.
[tense music] ♪ ♪ - One thing that often happens in situations and relationships
that involve domestic violence is that there is a shift in the severity of the violence and the aggression
and the psychological coercion over time. And so you start with small acts of aggression.
You start with small controlling behaviors, maybe checking someone's phone, maybe being a bit jealous,
maybe restricting who they get to see a little bit. And that escalates over time.
And as a victim, you also have that shifting normalcy. You're getting more and more injured over time
because it's a small step at a time, and it's not all at once. Whereas if the perpetrator had started
with the severity that they end with, of course, you would leave immediately. But that's not what happens.
And so you effectively get desensitized to the psychological and physical violence.
♪ ♪ Eleanor Price: Many, many times we said, get out of it. It's not good for both of ya.
- But his reply was always the same-- but I love her. Abbie Reidy: Their relationship was--
was so volatile at that point. It was-- it was getting worse. constable 2: Hello, mate.
You all right? - She [bleep] out of me. And she threw all me stuff over here. Look, see all this? - Yeah, yeah.
- All this is bleach, bleached on my clothes. constable 2: Did it start this morning?
- Can you have a look at my back? Have I got a bruise here somewhere? constable 2: Like, in the middle?
- Here. constable 2: Up there? Let's have a look. Yes-- - Yeah, mate, she [bleep] threw the candle right at me.
I can't breathe. constable 2: OK. - Next minute, she's [bleep] grabbing me up the neck all here, look, trying to [bleep] strangle me.
constable 2: Let's have a look. - Can you not see? constable 2: Yeah, I can. I just need to hear it from yourself.
- Yeah, she-- mate, she [bleep] strangled me. constable 2: Right. Julia Shaw: When police are called out to a scene,
they are typically encountering a scene where the man is the perpetrator of the domestic violence.
And occasionally what happens is that the men in those situations also claim that they're victims,
even though they're not. And so police are unfortunately used to men lying and almost using this as
another form of control. And so when an actual male victim is in front of them, it can be difficult to see them because they're
so used to men weaponizing that or being the perpetrators. [tense music] ♪ ♪ constable 2: Is there other injuries as well?
- --because I'm having her done this time. Look, just-- all right, you see this?
Look, she's took knives and everything to my face in the past. See this scar here?
She's cut me with knives and everything in the past, mate, all down me face. constable 2: Where are you off now to?
- My mom's. constable 2: Your mom's, OK. Graham Price: I would tell him he's got to end this now,
or it's not gonna end pretty. Somebody in this relationship is gonna die. Julia Shaw: Louis moved in with his parents.
Kirsty Carless was charged with bodily harm and strangulation. She was released on bail on the condition
she did not contact Louis. But she ignored the court order. Eleanor Price: She would use their daughter
to get Louis back up to the house and start talking to him again. - So the relationship come Christmas was still on and
off, as it always had been. Abbie Reidy: No matter how much you asked him not to go back
and and tell him that it wasn't the right situation to be in, he always went back.
He had a daughter with her. And it was the only way he was gonna see his daughter.
[suspenseful music] ♪ ♪ I'd saw Louis Christmas Eve. I'd popped into my mom and dad's just to see what
his plans were for Christmas. Christmas morning came, and everything just changed.
Julia Shaw: Detectives spent Christmas Day reviewing the home surveillance footage to examine Kirsty's claim
of self-defense. - What they saw on video changed everything. At 3:00 AM, the security footage
showed a female, Kirsty Carless, arriving at Louis's parents'. ♪ ♪ Less than a minute afterwards, the camera
at the back of the house showed Kirsty Carless stalking Louis with a knife. ♪ ♪
Louis stumbled out of view towards the conservatory, where he collapsed and died.
There was no sound on the security footage, which made it difficult for police to exactly understand why she
had turned up that morning. So they needed to speak to witnesses to build up that picture.
Julia Shaw: Police reconstructed what happened on the day that Louis died with the help of phone records and eyewitnesses.
- On Christmas Eve, Kirsty had spent the day in a couple of pubs with a male friend.
The male friend said she was drunk. They went back to his house. She had taken cocaine, and they had sex.
At around 1:30 in the morning on Christmas Day, a female friend had sent Kirsty a screenshot
of a dating profile that belonged to Louis. Kirsty's demeanor changed. She booked a taxi to take her to her home address.
Steve Keogh: Kirsty Carless's phone records show that she had called Louis 45 times
between 2:15 AM and 2:44 AM. - Kirsty then called her mother to say whatever happens
tomorrow, that she loves her. Julia Shaw: Another taxi driver took Kirsty to Louis's parents' house.
Stephanie Wareham: When the taxi pulled up outside Louis's parents' address, she told him that she'd be back in a couple of minutes.
Kirsty had a key to Louis's family home, and she used it to enter the property. Graham Price: She's entered the house
and gone straight upstairs, expecting to find him in bed with another woman. But he wasn't up there.
He was in his safe place. Julia Shaw: What happened next was overheard by the person
who dropped her off. Stephanie Wareham: Around 30 seconds after Kirsty entered the property,
the taxi driver reported hearing a scream from a male that he said sounded scared.
[tense music] ♪ ♪ Abbie Reidy: It was heartbreaking to see because we're seeing his last moments quite literally.
Sam Price: He was being stalked and chased around the garden like an animal, like a piece of prey.
♪ ♪ - Just a few moments later, he's-- he's gone. Abbie Reidy: Kirsty had to step over him
to get out of the house. So she would have stepped over Louis lying, dying on the floor, put the knife on the breakfast bar,
and then to leave through the front door. Stephanie Wareham: Kirsty came back to the taxi
after around two minutes and asked the driver to take her to her parents' home. The driver noted that she appeared anxious and sweaty.
Once she arrived at her parents' home in the taxi, she admitted what she had done.
And her stepfather called 999. Steve Keogh: Kirsty's claim of self-defense collapsed
very quickly, with the video painting a very different picture. [solemn music] ♪ ♪
Julia Shaw: The knife used to kill Louis was analyzed and provided crucial evidence.
Steve Keogh: Police compared the knife that was used to kill Louis with those found at his parents'
home, but they didn't match. But when they examined the knives at Kirsty Carless's home, they did
match, indicating that she had brought the knife with her. Julia Shaw: A closer look at the footage
showed no signs of aggression from Louis. And it was Kirsty pursuing him. Steve Keogh: The footage in the yard
shows Louis constantly backing away from Kirsty Carless, which is in complete contrast
to her trying to paint a picture of self-defense. Julia Shaw: Louis's injuries were inconsistent
with him being any threat. Abbie Reidy: When he's running around the garden, he's been stabbed.
She'd already done the damage. - He was already dying at that point. Julia Shaw: As soon as she sees him, she stabs him.
She's made a plan. She's executing it, then she's going right for the heart. As the perpetrator of intimate partner violence,
what you often get is someone who has one rule for themselves and another rule for the victim.
She's literally in bed with another man. Louis Price is on a dating app with a profile,
and this seems to be enough to put her in a state of complete jealousy and rage,
where she runs over and basically manifests the most extreme form of control she can,
which is to kill him. The case went to trial in July 2025. - It was a female assailant, which isn't typical.
There was a mountain of evidence, which really brought the nature of Kirsty and Louis's relationship to light.
Steve Keogh: Louis wasn't able to speak for himself. So police looked into the couple's history.
Abbie Reidy: Things were a lot worse than what he told us. And we didn't find out half of it until after he'd died.
Stephanie Wareham: At the time Louis was fatally stabbed, he was deemed to be at very high risk of domestic abuse
by Staffordshire Police. Kirsty had tried to portray herself as a victim in their relationship.
She had called police numerous times and reported that he had hurt her, only to later
say that it wasn't true. The trial really showed the true nature of their relationship, which was that Louis
was a victim of Kirsty. Julia Shaw: When you see a domestic violence situation and you see an escalation in violence, psychological or
physical, the single biggest predictor of it escalating to intimate partner homicide-- so
to murder-- is strangulation. And so having this moment where he says, she tried to strangle me today, and showing it to the police,
having the marks on his neck, that is a moment that should have been seen as a real moment of urgency.
She is already on this escalating path to murder. Abbie Reidy: I believe in my heart that Louis was done.
Everything she tried to antagonize Louis wasn't working. He wasn't rising to her arguments.
And I think she was realizing that-- that Louis was-- was quite literally ready to leave
and never return. And she couldn't have that. If she couldn't have him, nobody-- nobody ever would.
And she made sure of that. [dramatic music] ♪ ♪ Julia Shaw: Kirsty Carless was sentenced to life imprisonment
with a minimum term of 25 years. Abbie Reidy: No sentence will ever be enough. It was never gonna bring Louis back.
We was just happy that she got the maximum. Eleanor Price: It's very easy to miss domestic violence
as men don't open up as much as women. Like, Louis thought it was embarrassing. There's this big bravado.
♪ ♪ [gentle music] ♪ ♪ Abbie Reidy: If one man hears this and just realizes that it's OK, you can reach out,
you can get help, you don't have to live through it, then that there will be worth it.
That's what I wish someone would have done for Louis. Then maybe Louis would have spoke up sooner.
Maybe he would have still been here. ♪ ♪ Sam Price: Anyone who knew Louis all probably see him in the same way,
a cheeky lad, heart of gold. I loved him. I really do. Eleanor Price: I remember him every single minute of the day.
I can't see it getting any easier. People say, oh, time's a healer. No, it's not.
No, it's not at all. - With Louis gone, we've lost the heartbeat of the family. We've lost the laughs, the drama.
I miss the chats on the bank. So that's-- that's my biggest loss personally. Yeah.
