[dramatic music] Julia: This time on Killers Caught on Camera. - Two people's dead.
Julia: In the UK, a man claims to be involved in a double homicide. Man: He said he's murdered two people.
Kimball: Somebody walked into the police station and said they had killed two people.
I can remember my first question back was, have they? Julia: And in the US-- Man: [on phone] I murdered my girlfriend.
You'll need to use forceful entry to get into the house. Julia: --tensions mount as police track a killer.
Cop: Police! [tense music] ♪ ♪ Man: [on phone] It just sounds like something bad is happening to her.
Woman: We know what happened because the video tells us what happened. Man: [on phone] I heard some gunshots.
- I need to get rid of the gun. Man: Man, that's good. Man: The camera doesn't lie.
Julia: In the UK, in East Sussex, Newhaven. Kimball: Sussex, it's a varied county.
There are pockets of quite built up in urban areas. It's relatively rare for there to be a homicide.
I think that we would anticipate no more than 10 a year. Homicide is a crime that is very varied.
One of the things that I say is there's no such thing as a typical murder. Julia: June 9, 2023.
An elderly man walks into a police station and makes a shocking confession. Cop: Are you all right?
What's happened today? Cop: You've killed two people? OK. Kimball: I can remember it very well.
I'd just got home from work, and my phone rang. The caller told me that somebody
had walked into the police station and told the council officer that they had killed two people.
I can remember my first question back was, have they? Julia: The officer noticed the man's right hand was injured.
Cop: What's that from? Cop: A knife? Have you got a knife on you? - No. Cop: OK.
Julia: The whole scene seems really surreal. In my head, I'd be going, is this man
having a psychotic break? - Does he think that he has killed somebody when he hasn't?
Is he imagining this? Is he hallucinating? Is he confused? Cop: Man in the front office is bleeding from his right hand.
He says it's from a knife. - Of course, then the next question is, well, where did this happen?
Cop: He said he's murdered two people, and his clothes and the knife are at the address
that it's happened at. [sirens blaring] Kimball: Two officers were dispatched immediately.
If there is any chance of saving anybody's life, that's gonna be the focus. Julia: Police arrived at the address.
Kimball: They were able to gain access to the property from an insecure window in the kitchen.
Julia: The officers at the scene confirmed there were in fact two people dead inside the house.
Kimball: This wasn't a typical whodunit. It was quite apparent who'd done it. And what we were looking for is to understand
how the events had unfolded. Julia: The victims were identified as Chloe and Josh Bashford.
[tense music] ♪ ♪ They lived with their four children in the coastal town of New Haven.
♪ ♪ For Josh, it was love at first sight. - He came in, and he said, oh, just to let you know, Mum,
I have met a young lady. He was over the moon, wasn't he? - Yeah. - Yeah. Seemed the perfect fairy tale.
He was-- he was ecstatic. He was just smitten by Chloe. Julia: Josh was 33 years old and worked
as a broadband engineer. Sharon: He absolutely loved his job. - He was very proud of that and the fact
that he could climb up telegraph poles. Sharon: And he'd take photos when he's up
the telegraph pole of himself. ♪ ♪ Julia: Josh and his brother, Billy, were extremely close.
Billy: I think Josh was the only person ever really, who got me, who understood me.
And I think I was the only person who really understood him. We definitely had that brother connection.
Sharon: [on video] No, Billy. - [on video] I want mine. Sharon: [on video] What?
- [on video] My camera. Sharon: [on video] Your camera? - [on video] Yes. Sharon: [on video] We haven't got one.
- [on video] Yes, I have. Billy: These were Josh's Warhammer figures. He used to collect them when we were younger.
And I used to sit down and watch him paint them till early hours in the morning.
And he would just sit there with all these different figures and just paint. And I don't know.
That was his happy place, really. I suppose he found it very therapeutic, and he just loved doing it.
And I could see how happy he was and the joy in his face. Julia: Josh and Billy bonded over their love of football.
Billy: Football was a massive part of our relationship. He was a Crystal Palace fan, and I was a Brighton fan.
And that was one of the biggest parts of our relationship. Julia: Chloe Bashford ran the family home.
-♪ Happy birthday to you ♪ ♪ Happy birthday to you ♪ Billy: Chloe was a very jokable person.
She's very, like, outgoing. And so was Josh. Very bubbly, very outgoing. I think they had a laugh together.
Chloe: [on video] Smack him one big. Oof. Julia: Derek Martin was Chloe's 64-year-old stepfather.
Recently, he'd been spending more time at the house in Newhaven and helped Chloe with the school run.
- Derek Martin had been married to Chloe's mother, but they'd long separated and divorced before Chloe was born.
Julia: Derek and Chloe had become close in recent years. Billy: People said that he wanted
to have a new sort of connection with the family and start again, a new chapter.
He was giving them a lot help, and I think they needed it. Julia: On the evening of June 8, Derek sent Chloe a text.
[tense music] ♪ ♪ The next morning, Derek stopped at a coffee shop on his way to the house before joining Chloe for the school run.
He was dressed head to toe in white. Kimball: This is footage of Derek Martin coming
into Costa Coffee, wearing a light-colored T-shirt and light-colored trousers. He would often buy Chloe a drink
before he went to the home to help her with the school run. Julia: After they'd dropped the kids off at school,
Chloe and Derek went for breakfast. Kimball: This footage shows Chloe and Derek
at the bar of a local pub where they had breakfast together. There's nothing about it that suggests
anything untoward has happened or is going to happen. Both appear relatively calm.
Julia: This, to me, seems like a very normal interaction between a stepdad and his stepdaughter.
There's certainly no sign saying something terrible will happen, which is also one of the reasons
that perpetrators get access to victims in the first place because the victims, at least initially,
still trust the perpetrators, especially when we're talking about intrafamilial, so a stepdad, in this case,
killing his stepdaughter. After breakfast, Chloe and Derek went to the supermarket.
- The plan for the day was that they would do housework at the home, and Chloe was buying
cleaning products and other things to enable them to do this. Julia: They arrived home at around 10:30 AM.
♪ ♪ Two hours passed. At 1:06 PM, Chloe's eldest daughter texted her mom. But Chloe never replied to her daughter's message.
At 2:00 PM, it was Derek who sent a text back to Chloe's eldest daughter. An hour later, Derek picked up the youngest two kids
from school and took them to the coffee shop. They were joined by the two eldest children.
But Derek looked different. Kimball: You can see there's been a change of clothes.
He's now in-- in shorts and a T-shirt. Derek ordered the children a drink. - Derek Martin is out with the kids.
He's not distressed. He's not nervous. After not hearing back from her mother, Chloe's eldest daughter started to worry.
Derek then took the children for some food. Derek Martin walks into McDonald's like it's
just a normal day. If I were to see this interaction, I would assume this is a grandfather out
with his grandkids. Everything is normal. Everything is calm. ♪ ♪ After they left McDonald's, Derek drove
the kids to Brighton and dropped them off at their grandmother's. A few minutes later, Derek went to a local shop
to buy beer and cigarettes. Kimball: Having bought the beer, he went and sat on the beach in Brighton, where he contemplated
what his next step was. - It almost feels like he is saying goodbye to the outside world.
He is saying, I'm gonna enjoy this moment on the beach. And in my head, all I can think is probably because he
thinks it's his last. While he was figuring out what to do, Derek sent a message to the children's grandmother.
The children were now extremely concerned. Derek made the decision to hand himself in.
cop: What's happened today? cop: You've killed two people? OK. Julia: After officers were sent to Chloe and Josh's home,
news spread fast amongst the family. Billy: I looked at my phone, and I had 15 missed calls.
My heart dropped. I knew that it would be something really bad. I got to his house as quick as possible,
and I remember just pulling up. And as I pulled up in their driveway, I just saw about eight police cars.
[sirens blaring] - They said that it was Josh and Chloe, and they said that Josh had been stabbed to death
and that it was Derek Martin. Oh god. [tense music] ♪ ♪ That is just when the guilt of us
knowing that he was at that house every day. Had I known how violent that man was, I--
I would have gone and dragged my son out. But we didn't know. - We didn't know. - Didn't know anything.
Julia: Chloe and Josh were confirmed dead inside their home. Derek Martin was arrested and taken into custody.
cop: The time is now 7:12, OK? You're under arrest on the suspicion of murder times two.
The reason for this is that you've stated you've murdered two people. Officers have attended your address
and have found two bodies. You understand all that? - Yeah. cop: OK. Julia: The police started a murder investigation,
and the Bashford's family home in New Haven was made a crime scene. Kimball: Chloe clearly had sustained a number of injuries.
She was lying in a downstairs bedroom. She clearly had been involved in-- in a significant
physical altercation. Upstairs in the master bedroom, Josh was lying on the floor.
He appeared to have injuries to his front and back. Julia: Derek Martin was interviewed by police
to try and work out how a morning's housework turned to murder. - So what he's saying here is that Chloe was constantly
talking about money. The police officer was leaning into his tone, is trying to be comforting, is trying to help him
continue to be cooperative. Kimball: He said that Chloe had been going on about money.
And for some reason, that caused him to lose his temper. - Money or fight over money is one of the most
common motives for murder. And it doesn't need to be a lot of money. It can be a couple of dollars.
It can be a couple of pounds. It's quite triggering for people. It can lead to a fight that gets out of control.
What it doesn't fit with is what we want murder to be justified by. We think that murder needs to have a big reason, a big fight,
a long standing issue. But it can just be someone who reaches, in their mind, some sort of tipping point and then decides
to make a terrible decision and goes ahead and murder somebody. - A pathologist undertook a post-mortem examination
of Chloe, and it was established that she had been struck multiple times on her head.
- She had also sustained eight stab wounds to her front and back in various places.
It was, in fact, the stab injuries that were the cause of her death. - The forensic pathologist found
that Josh had sustained four stab wounds to the front of his chest. Kimball: He had what was described as an incised injury
to his back, which looked like a raking type injury, so something coming down his back.
He also had an injury to his neck and some other signs that were indicative of him being strangled.
Julia: The brutality of this is, of course, in no relation to what the disagreement was about.
In criminology, we call it the victimization gap. When you have the victim on one side and something catastrophic
has happened, and then you don't have a sufficiently strong motive on the other side.
And so that gap between what the perpetrator experiences and what the victim experiences is so wide
that the only way you can feel that you can bridge it is by having a really good reason.
And this is not a good reason. Never mind for the extent of the harm and the injuries
that he did. ♪ ♪ Kimball: Within the forensic examination, there were a number of features that
did become useful to understanding what had happened. The door handles to both the door of the room
that Chloe was found in and the room that Josh was found in had been taken off. Derek Martin later gave an account
that he'd taken the handles from the doors to protect the children from seeing what
had happened to their parents. ♪ ♪ Julia: CCTV footage showed Derek Martin moving the Bashford's family car just after he'd
killed Chloe and Josh. Kimball: We can see that Derek Martin, by this point, has changed his clothes.
He's now wearing the gray T-shirt and blue shorts, and he's moved the car from outside of the address
to a nearby street. The reason he gave for doing so was so that the children would be unaware of what had happened.
Julia: Derek Martin's actions post-murder, to me, speak of someone who is trying to clean up what he did.
He, I think in his own mind, be unclear about what he wants at this point. He's not running away.
He's not escaping. He's not-- he is taking some steps, but not that many steps to try and get away with the
crime entirely. Derek also took Chloe's mobile phone from the crime scene and threw it in a bush before
taking the kids to McDonald's. ♪ ♪ He later revealed where the phone was hidden.
- He wrote a letter which was given to one of his prison guards that was passed to the investigation.
Julia: A police team was sent to the exact location and found Chloe's phone. - We also were able to support that with CCTV,
and indeed, that showed him in the bushes where the phone was for some time. Julia: Chloe's mobile phone had saved crucial images
from the doorbell camera. Kimball: We were unable to get any moving footage, but we did get a number of still images.
This is a photograph of Derek Martin removing the Ring doorbell that had been on the front door.
You can see an injury on his finger. That injury was caused by the knife that he used to kill Chloe and Joshua.
And we did also later discover the Ring doorbell in a bush within the garden of the address.
[tense music] ♪ ♪ Julia: After Derek killed Chloe and Josh, he picked up the kids from school
as if nothing had happened. Billy: After watching all the CCTV, I just think after what he's just done,
it's like the most barbaric thing I've ever known to happen. And I think he's got their kids in front of him
and how he's acting. I don't know how a person's brain can process to acting normal and driving around
with the kids in the car, acting normal, and even watching him going to buy beer and
go sit on the beach after what he's done before he takes himself into the police station.
I sit, and I think you're sitting there whilst these two people have been brutally,
brutally killed in their home. It makes my blood boil. And the more I think about it, the more
it makes my head spin because it's just-- it's so bizarre. Kimball: What Derek Martin has said
is that he was trying to make things as normal as possible for the children and that he wanted to protect them.
- Derek Martin says that he wants to take care of the kids and that these grandkids are his top priority.
But he's, of course, also the reason why they are now orphaned. So as much as he can say, I did it
for the kids, what exactly about the situation was for the kids? ♪ ♪ In August 2023, Derek Martin pleaded not guilty to murder
but guilty to manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility. - In this case, Derek Martin put forward
a defense of diminished responsibility on the basis that at the time of killing both Chloe and Josh,
he was suffering from a depression. Julia: When you plead insanity, usually what
you're trying to do is say, I didn't understand what I was doing at the time. The only way that that can be even argued is if you say,
I didn't understand what was real and what wasn't. Depression can change your perception of what
is real and what isn't. But what it doesn't do is make you think that murder is OK,
that it's not harmful, or that it might not have long-term consequences. No form of depression is going to erase that knowledge.
And data found on Chloe's phone revealed a meticulous and precise gap between the two killings.
Kimball: We were able to show the point at which Chloe had been attacked. It happened around 12:16.
And we were also able to prove that Josh hadn't arrived home until 12:21. So there was at least a five-minute window.
The time between the two killings meant that that wouldn't be something that he could say
was as a result of his depression. Julia: The fact that he pauses, gets another weapon,
pauses for multiple minutes. Josh comes home, and then he attacks Josh. That isn't a pattern that's consistent with someone
who loses control once. That's someone who feels like they've lost control or let
their negative thoughts overtake them once, but then allows it to happen again and allows it to happen again.
And that's very different than it happening once. ♪ ♪ But the question still remained, why did Derek Martin
kill Chloe and Josh Bashford? Kimball: The only thing he said is that there had been some dispute between he
and Chloe over money and that that had led him to essentially lose his temper and lose control,
causing him to act in the way that he did. ♪ ♪ Sharon: The fact that Derek Martin
has not expressed why he killed Joshua, that is just heartbreaking. And I think that had we not been a family,
I don't think we'd have got through it. Wouldn't have got through it at all. ♪ ♪
All I'm doing now is I'm writing to Derek Martin at the prison once a week, asking him why he murdered our son, Josh.
I don't expect an answer. ♪ ♪ Julia: In 2025, Derek Martin was found guilty on two counts of murder.
judge: You knew the Bashford family well. You were in Chloe and Joshua's home because they had welcomed you into their lives.
The jury rejected the partial defense of diminished responsibility as available to you
and considered you should bear full responsibility for your actions. On each count of murder, the sentence is life imprisonment.
Billy: I think Derek's taken a lot more than I think he knew. He's taken not just a brother away,
but, for me, my best mate. Everything I see, everything I hear, I still now think, I'd love to go and tell him, but I can't.
I miss him more than life itself. It's left a massive, massive hole behind. [gentle music]
Sharon: That's his Crystal Palace top. It looks extremely worn, but there's so many memories.
Andy: Josh's Memorial at Crystal Palace Football Club, it was a memorial, but it was a good memory.
- It was just amazing. Andy: It was. - All of us dressed. I had his Crystal Palace football shirt on.
And on the 33rd minute of them playing football, his photo came up on the big screen.
And everyone just stood up. And everyone in the stadium, they were singing. - It did feel like a normal day in amongst all
the horrible days. - It was lovely. Very special. ♪ ♪ Hello. This is where I like to come to for some peace and quiet.
And it's where I like to come to think about things and to think about Josh. This is where he liked to be.
He was just a lovely son to have. And we really miss him. [tense music] ♪ ♪ Julia: People always want there to be a sufficiently
big reason for murder. The problem is that rarely is that actually the case. Murder often happens for quite banal reasons,
like a fight over money that gets out of control. That can be enough to get someone
to react incredibly strongly and to say, this is the reason I did it. But really, what it ends up being
is just that person is allowing their emotions to take hold and is acting on those negative feelings
rather than controlling them. [tense music] ♪ ♪ Julia: In the US, in Ohio, Columbus.
Julia: Officers were immediately sent to the address, where the suspect said he'd murdered his girlfriend.
Cop: Caller is in Powell on the phone with the dispatcher now. What? Cop: So we don't even know if he killed someone?
Julia: The dispatcher tried to keep the suspect on the call so they could trace their location.
cop: He's telling them he's going to do a [bleep] by cop. Julia: Police arrived at the suspected murder location.
cop: He's saying she's dead. - Force entry. cop: Can I kick the door? I'm good? cop: Kick the door. Cop: Said she's dead.
cop: Police! cop: Yep, she's dead. She's right here. We got her. cop: Oh, lady. cop: Clear the house.
Let's go. Julia: The victim in the house was identified as 29-year-old Shannon Hiott.
Ava: She'd been stabbed more than 30 times in what appeared to be a frenzied attack.
She'd been stabbed on her chest, on her back, and her throat had been slit. cop: Downstairs is clear.
[gentle music] Julia: Shannon was a fraud investigator. Thoughtful, generous, and tenacious.
She'd graduated in 2017 with a bachelor's degree in psychology. - Shannon was a bright light.
She was much loved by her friends. She was very active in the local music scene.
She loved the arts, and her passion was rescuing stray cats. Julia: In 2022, Shannon met 26-year-old Chance Donohoe.
- Shannon and Chance had an off again, on again relationship. But after about a year, they had a serious falling out
when Shannon told her mother that Chance had stolen from her. She blocked his accounts on social media.
She blocked his phone. She was clearly trying to signal to Chance that it really was over.
- Shannon Hiott seemed like a very together person, not someone who would be at the mercy of someone
who's very unstable. And she's the one that ended the relationship when it turned out his behavior wasn't acceptable.
So she had boundaries. He began to violate the norms of a healthy relationship, and Shannon was not willing to tolerate that kind of behavior.
[light music] Ava: After the breakup, Shannon went so far as to warn other women about him.
She went on a Facebook group called Are We Dating the Same Guy and posted about him,
saying that basically he comes across as nice, but he's not. He stole from me. He stole money.
He's on Tinder. Don't trust him. Shawn: She's not slighting his character in any way.
She is just pointing out the facts of his behavior. So she doesn't put him down.
She's not slagging him off. She's literally just saying, these are the events that
happened that were not OK. She's gonna take the risk to post something negative about Chance for the benefit of other women,
not for her. So it's quite a positive marker about Shannon's personality. Julia: After the breakup, Shannon changed the locks
and got her mom to return Chance's belongings to avoid any further contact with him.
Shawn: Shannon seemed really switched on, and she was doing all the right things to protect herself.
[tense music] Julia: On the evening of August 28, 2023, a friend was visiting Shannon because she didn't
want to be alone in the house. Shannon's friend's car can be seen parked in the driveway.
At 11:11 PM, Chance's car was captured on camera outside Shannon's home. Shawn: It's certainly worrying behavior.
It's showing that he's not able to contain his feelings. He has to act them out.
He sees a car that doesn't belong to her. He's gonna create a story in his head.
So in a way, he's frothing the milk of his own emotions. He is activating and triggering himself
and building himself up to-- to act and do something about it. ♪ ♪ Julia: But a short while later, Shannon's friend's car
was gone. And Chance's silver car was parked on the driveway. At 1:58 AM, a security camera pointing
at Shannon's front window captured something alarming. - First, a hulking shadow appears.
And then within seconds, a bloody hand. ♪ ♪ Julia: A few minutes later, Chance Donohoe
appeared on camera outside Shannon's home. Shawn: Chance there is pacing back and forth.
He's not standing outside, calmly having a cigarette. So it shows that he's in some kind of distress.
Julia: Four hours passed. Then Chance Donohoe called 911. Julia: Officers on the ground were immediately notified,
while the operator did everything she could to keep Chance on the line so they could track him down.
- That operator kept the suspect on the call so that they could try and track him
down because at that moment, they must not have known whether he was telling the truth or not.
[sirens blaring] Shawn: There is a dissonance between what he was saying and the tone of his voice.
It doesn't sound like someone who's not well and not very stable. He sounds pretty coherent.
Ava: Police ascertained that the suspect had gone to his mother's home and called them from there.
Shawn: I think the dispatcher did really well at keeping him calm, keeping him engaged, and
yet still being firm enough to give him very specific instructions. Julia: Officers were closing in on Chance's location.
Julia: The dispatcher tried to stall Chance so the police could reach him. - The police operator kept him on the phone.
She kept talking to him, kept soothing him. - She kept talking to him, even as he drove
and his paranoia grew. Julia: Police were given a description of Chance's car and were scouring the neighborhood looking for him.
Meanwhile, another team of officers arrived at Shannon's house. [radio chatter]
cop: Is this the house? cop: Right here. cop: This it? cop: Yep. Can I kick the door? I'm good?
cop: Kick the door. cop: Police! cop: Yep, she's dead. She's right here. We got her. cop: Oh, lady.
cop: Clear the house. Let's go. [radio chatter] Julia: Across Columbus, police patrols
were looking for Chance's car. cop: I think I got him right here. Julia: Finally, they got him in their sights.
Ava: He became aware that the police were behind him. Julia: Chance conceded and slowly
pulled into a gas station. Ava: When police pulled over the suspect, they knew they had to handle the whole situation carefully.
- They didn't want to inflame the situation. Ava: They knew he might be very unstable.
- They knew that he might commit suicide by cop. [tense music] ♪ ♪ - When they arrested Chance Donohoe,
the police discovered that there were lacerations to his hand that had been wrapped in a sort of makeshift bandage.
Julia: Police needed to check his car for any evidence. Julia: Chance's shoes and socks were covered in blood
and taken as evidence. - At that point, Chance Donohoe was charged with murder. And he was taken to the Franklin County Jail.
Julia: Police went to Chance's mother's house to look for the murder weapon. cop: How are you, Mom?
woman: Is Chance at the police station now? cop: We have him in custody. Yeah, he went voluntarily.
OK? Hey, ma'am, is there a knife? Ava: They went straight to the kitchen, checked
the top of the refrigerator, and there they found a blood-covered knife, exactly where they'd asked him to put it.
♪ ♪ Julia: Chance Donohoe sat down with police to offer his explanation. cop: Why don't you just kind of take
me through yesterday, leading up to last night and today. Like, what happened? - Me and Shannon are going through a really
bad breakup right now. cop: Right. - Because I took advantage of her a lot. And so we broke up, and she's been
just, like, making all these Facebook posts about, like, our breakup. Shawn: He's looking down.
He doesn't sound upset or remorseful or shocked. He sounds almost victimy. - I'm unable to not steal and unable to not,
like, take advantage of people that are around me. - And it's like "I couldn't help it" kind of behavior.
- I'm on my way home. I had, like, this weird thing that was just like, well, if you want Shannon back and you can't get her back,
you can, like, take her life force, and then you'll be together forever. - Chance is admitting or acknowledging
that he has some very disturbed beliefs that are not connected with ordinary reality.
There's a disturbed way of thinking of possession that definitely points to a psychotic thought process,
that if I can't have what I want, I'll just take their life force. - I oftentimes, whenever I'm experiencing
episodes of psychosis, think that I'm a god. - He's revealing snippets of his mental state
as if that was the most natural thing in the world. Clearly, he's a disturbed young man.
- I went home, and I changed my clothes into all black. And I grabbed the knife.
And I went over to her house. ♪ ♪ I slammed my shoulder into the door. I didn't say anything.
I didn't do anything. I just started stabbing Shannon. And she didn't even realize what was happening until I had
stabbed her a couple of times. She said, are you [bleep] kidding me? What the [bleep]?
Chance, stop. Wait, please stop. I'm dying. I love you, I love you. And then she didn't speak another word.
♪ ♪ - To have an ex-partner be stabbing you to death, that's an unimaginable horror.
It could just be a tremendous desire for revenge and to get back. It could be symbolically trying to silence her to literally
she can't speak, but either way, it's a very cold, cruel thing to do. ♪ ♪ Julia: Almost a year after Shannon was murdered,
Chance Donohoe pled guilty to murder. Ava: In the trial, prosecutors said that Chance Donohoe killed Shannon because he was jealous.
He was angry. He knew she'd posted about him on social media, which might have interfered with his ability
to date other women. He knew she might be seeing someone else now. The murder, they said, had nothing to do with anything
he'd used as an excuse. It was jealousy, and it was revenge. In his defense, Chance Donohoe told the court
he had mental health problems that hadn't been treated well and that he had not been taking his medication
and that was the cause for his behavior. But in the trial, prosecutors dismissed all of that.
They said the murder had nothing to do with his mental health. It was a pure act of violence.
Julia: At the sentencing. Chance spoke directly to Shannon's family. - I'm truly sorry for all the pain I have caused you.
I wish I could take it back. I hope that the verdict reached today serves justice for the loss I have put you through.
[gentle music] Julia: Chance Donohoe was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 31 years.
Shawn: Shannon's murder, for me, indicates that even if you are strong, you have good boundaries, even in doing all the right things,
we're still very susceptible and vulnerable. It's sad but true that there is no guarantees.
Even if we do everything right, we could still be the victim of a horrific murder.
It's really tragic. Ava: I think Shannon's friends and family will remember her as this bright, sunny presence,
a lover of music, somebody who devoted her spare time to rescuing stray cats and making sure
that they had a good life, who loved vulnerable creatures. That, I think, is one of the things that
