Halloween (Movie) /// Off The Record | Forensic Files

[Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] happy Halloween I want everybody want everybody to take note of
something today a world record has been set usually Captain you know it takes me
roughly an hour to get here from my house to get to the garage from my house today 45
minutes that's going to be standing as the world record for Nick getting to the garage the the old record for me was 49
minutes I only hit one traffic light today and the freeway was awesome like there was no
there was no there was no no the freeway was nice to me there was none of the normal [ __ ] that I encounter along
the way so in the honor of Halloween my friend you and I we've always loved the Halloween franchise uh movies yes you
know so going back we're actually both too young to have seen the first one you know in the theaters cuz the first one
came out in 78 yeah so we would have watched it on TV at some point and it's still one of the
best ones I think so might be the best one still I think so like it's the interesting thing for me is when you
talk about the big four okay and I say big four because when we were growing up it was generally considered that you had
four big uh scary movie franchises and those were the Nightmare on Elm Street which is Freddy Krueger Halloween which
is Michael Myers Friday 13th which is Jason Vorhees or his mother I guess if you want to get real technical if you
want to get technical it's his mother and then I would say the the fourth would be uh Texas Chainsaw
Massacre would we agree that those are the somewhat the big four like if there were a Mount Rushmore of of scary movie
franchises that those would be the the faces on yeah scary Rushmore right some honorable mentions would be Hell Raiser
yeah yeah I'd say that's a and the leprechaun movies there was a lot of those in Chucky yeah Chucky Child's Play
Child's Play but I think for me was like the the the Jason movies the Friday 13th
movies I think they hold up most of them anyway and I think I think most of the Halloweens hold up as well for me though
with Nightmare on Elm Street it was a big drop off like the first one I thought was terrifying when I was a kid
I remember watching it when I was in like second grade on a pullout couch bed in a completely dark room and my buddy's
house it like backed up to the woods and they had these like all this glass like
sliding glass doors windows backing up to the woods we watched it and the pitch black and I thought I kept thinking man
something's going to come out of those woods tonight and and Ratatat tat on the back glass door there ha Freddy but for
me like so the first one I thought was really good Nightmare on Elm Street and then I thought they got very poor after
that very bad and then Texas Chainsaw Massac to good was two the one with Johnny Depp
was in one of them I think he was first one or the second one I'll Google it real quick but as far as the Texas
Chainsaw Massacre goes I always enjoyed those ones the only thing though that was weird about the Texas Chainsaw
Massacre except for the one that I I think Dustin Hoffman was in one of them is no that's not his name is it who's
the guy the cocaine guy Dustin Hopper okay yeah yeah I okay I think he's the cocaine guy so he was in one of
them with the exception of that one it seemed to me like they were just making the same movie over and over and over
again like they never made Texas Chainsaw Massacre quite the way that they wanted to at out fresh out the gate
so they just kept remaking the same movie and trying to get it better each time but for the Halloween movies are
you checking out Johnny Depp yeah it's a 84 so Nightmare on Elm Street 84 sler film yeah so he was in the first one
yeah he had like a brief uh I think he was killed in his bedroom on the bed if I remember correctly like I think he's
talking to somebody out out the window I don't remember how much he was in it but
I'm pretty sure he was killed in his bedroom in that movie but for the Halloween movies uh I went and saw the
new Halloween movie which is just simply called Halloween which makes it which makes it all the more confusing because
there's about 25 that's not an accurate yeah but I think they're calling it Halloween 2018 okay like that's how
people are referring it to well that's helpful but I went and saw it the night that it came out and I got to tell you
Captain it was I thought it was very good and and I think that I even when I left the theater I told some people I
said I think that's the best one and then I was quickly reminded the first one's really damn good and I thought
well you're right and actually the way that this story works is you couldn't have this movie without the first one so
if yeah which they call Hall John Carpenter's Halloween 1978 is kind of how the The Fanboys
would call that one well and I did quite a a bit of research on the Halloween franchise before I went to see it
because I wanted to I hadn't watched any of the Halloween movies in a while um every couple years I do go back and
watch the first one um so I I remember that one well but the other ones scattered throughout the years there's a
lot of them that I watched once and never watched again because well frankly some of them are just not that good well
a lot of the times uh Rob Zombies Halloween his remakes of those uh have been on TV a lot lately and that I'm
sure they come across different when they're not on TV but um from what I've seen of those they're pretty good I
actually think they're pretty good some people think they're a pile of dog [ __ ]
I think they're pretty good yeah there's a there's a weird there's a weird argument for the the Rob Zombie ones
because I'm of I'm in the camp where I didn't think they were good but you and other people that I respect their
opinions very highly have told me no Nick they're good well what I liked about his version of of Michael is how
big he was monstrous you know so it's like when you think of I mean we cover actual cases MH that people do horrible
things and but to see the size of this guy right you go he is very capable of doing these things easily and that makes
it I I thought it made it made it a little more realistic and a little more scary at the same point like you know
some of these characters that they have in the movies you know what you know playing Jason or playing Michael they're
not that big of a person right so you think well I guess if I have to fight this person I you know let's see what
happens but when somebody is so Mammoth like Rob Zombie made Michael in his movies that's pretty scary well and I
think that was smart too because it makes it makes Mike Myers even though he's and forgive me I'm I'm trying to
recall Rob Zombie's version of the first one from having watched it a long time ago but if I remember correctly most of
the movie or at least for a portion of the movie he's in the psych ward or he's locked up in prison or prison type
environment yeah and and that one is called Halloween as well 2007 so the interesting thing by making him large
and of an opposing size is that it makes him threatening even though he's locked
up or in shackles you know when the guards are walking him about you're still like man at any second this guy
could snap and he has a good opportunity of overpowering the guards and making his way out that's the machete guy yeah
look how machete do they say machete machete that's I can't think of that guy's name but that guy's cool no but
look how big he is I mean he's I think did they get a guy from WWE to play that part possibly I mean it's that's the
size of the individual that we're looking at yeah is is a large this would be a large uh NFL tight end
NBA 67 68 yeah large dude but so I had to do I wanted to do some uh research on the Halloween movie franchise before I
went to go see it because I wanted to be fully up to date like I was really anticipating and looking forward to this
movie which was a little weird for me because I think the last time I was really looking forward to a Halloween
movie was H2O yeah I saw that in the theaters I did too and I was I I I thought H2O was okay it's kind of cheese
ball I think there's a line in it that that girl's so ugly it looks like her face was put on fire and or looks like
her face was lit on fire and put out with a shovel or something like that wow but I
remember that was like I thought that was like the funniest line in the world like she's so ugly that her face was set
on fire and put out with a shovel h2o's okay but it I thought it was a little cheese ball um but so I wanted to figure
out Captain what was the timeline so meaning what movies should I watch of the Halloween franchise before I go see
Halloween 2018 well you should well technically the way this one is set up is that you
have John Carpenter's Halloween right right and and this one the new one 2018 is starting off where that one left
off it's so yeah so for those of you out there that haven't gone and seen it yet
and you want to go see it if you want to do your homework what we're telling you
is the only movie you need to watch before seeing this one is the first one 1978 John Carpenters Halloween it
basically acts like the other Halloween movies never happened never happened which was brilliant I thought it was
brilliant and I think when people see the movie they will agree with me I thought it was very good um but yeah so
talking about the the timeline itself you know we have you have how many Halloween movies you have one two
three four is there a Halloween five and then there's the curse of Mike Myers which would act as either the fifth one
or the sixth one then you have H2O then you have Halloween resurrection and then you have the two
reboots that were done by Rob Zombie so that's nine or 10 movies and then plus the 2018 one originally going into it
Captain I thought that any of the movies that had jime Lee Curtis would be required for me to watch because you
know she's in the newest movie right so that would have been if I'm going going off of memory would be one and
two and then we have Halloween H2O wait she's in two oh yeah she's in H2O2 and she's in Halloween resurrection see if I
remember correctly I it's just so funny that I forgot that because you would think that okay they're just doing cuz
when they would say they're just doing the first one and then they skip to this one the newest one then I thought oh
she's just in the first one I forgot she's in the she's in I know she's in H2O well that's you're right so that
makes it kind of strange that's why I thought I was going to have to watch all four of the jam Le Curtis ones because
what made sense to me sitting on my couch before I looked it up online was I'm like okay well Halloween was
1978 and then H2O was 1998 20 years later and this one's coming out 20 years after that
2018 the 40th anniversary so I'm like oh crap I'm going to have to watch all the
jam Lee Curtis ones but nope it's just the uh just the first one and the new one and warning for anybody going back
in time and trying to watch all of them if you don't know this is something that
people are always shocked by because they don't don't know now you know they just don't remember Halloween 3 Michael
Myers is not even in the movie he's not even a part of the movie is I don't even
think his name is mentioned in the movie so if you're going to go back and you really want to try to watch as many as
possible just go ahead and skip number three because I remember the first time I watched it Captain I'm sitting there I
rented it back in the days when you go to Blockbuster rented it it was one of the few that I had not seen and I sat
there on the couch and I'm like 10 minutes into it no big deal I haven't seen Michael Myers right 20 minutes into
it yeah thought I might have seen him by now I just kept waiting and waiting and
waiting he never appears at all and apparently the idea a was that the Halloween franchise was to be Halloween
movies where it would be kind of like American Horror Story where you have kind of a different or like Goosebumps
yeah you have a different cast a different uh place where where the story takes place you have a different story a
different scary story would be part of the Halloween franchise it wasn't always going to be Michael Myers and in fact
they wanted to do I believe they only did Halloween 2 with Mike Myers because he was such a hit you know everybody
wanted to see more of this slasher film Halloween with Mike Myers and three got three got released to great
disappointment by many people that anticipated seeing Mike Myers went to the movie theater yeah bought a ticket
sat there the whole time no Mike Myers it's called the uh Season of the Witch and if I remember
correctly the I the plot spoiler alert if anybody's dying to see this movie spoiler alert I believe the plot is that
some like Evil Genius guy owns some kind of company and he I think he wants to sell exploding Halloween mask to the to
the children to the masses oh yeah or or the mask does something like it mind control to the children I can't remember
it's something to do with Halloween mask but I wonder if thinking back I wonder do you know the band Donovan or I guess
the guy Donovan the musician um he's saying uh herie gery man and U yeah yeah uh electric what was that electric
banana electric banana I think he had a song called electric banana and a song called Superman if he doesn't he has one
now he has a song called Season of the Witch and that's one of my favorite Donovan songs I don't know if it was in
the movie but uh that would be the only good part of the movie if it is well remember the band I played in a
long long time ago 2001 uh the Spiker and keski band right didn't those guys go on to do stuff with
Tenacious D yeah but here's what's really cool uh John Spiker and John keski they're both uh from Columbus uh
amazing musicians super talented could do anything played in a band with them great guys move out to LA they play with
with uh k um Kyle gass's ban train wreck mhm they do that for a while then they're also in Tenacious D um but
what's really cool is that John keski which is just one of the best guitar players in the world if you want to hear
some just great solo acoustic guitar stuff he he makes his own records check out John kesy but
he actually played um some music for John Carpenter which is pretty oh really yeah cuz John Carpenter did a record of
a bunch of movie themes and and he played guitar on some of that record so check that out if you're interested
Carpenter's got to be one of the uh I mean he's kind of a genius level right yeah I mean I don't know his other I
don't know his creative genius I mean here's my issue I'm just going to go off on a little tangent right
now I hate one I think sometimes we throw around that word too quickly the genius or too often right but I think we
should put it in categories I mean John Carpenter the only evidence we have right now is he's he's a creative genius
I mean he might be actual genius but it's like when people talk about Kanye and they go you know Kanye West and they
they say oh well did you see that interview with the president yeah but he is a genius and you go look he he might
be he might be a musical genius right that it doesn't mean any that he knows anything about politics you know what
his the the portrayal of of uh Kanye West on S live that's genius that that the the uh what do they call that the
cold open yeah yeah that was that was great so I want to correct myself on the Donovan songs it's uh I don't know if
there's a such thing as electric banana but I do know well there's going to be a
song called electric banana real soon sunshine Superman was a big one for him mellow yellow was a big one hery Gertie
man anybody that's seen the Zodiac movie which I love the Jake Gyllenhaal um the
Zodiac movie they play the hery Gertie man I think it's at the opening the opening to the movie and at the close
yeah and it it's weird because I never thought of that song hery Gertie man as a creepy song as a scary song and the
way that that movie opens up and the way that it closes it makes it that it makes
it makes the hair on the back of your neck go up and you should probably shave that hair yeah
you probably should lather it up and shave it down so I'm giving uh Halloween uh 2018 I haven't seen it yet
just a big two thumbs up Captain I'm telling you it's it's uh intense is the best way to describe
it no you should just left it like that yeah Halloween 2018 it's Nick from True Crime garage gives it
a you know what the the uh there were two ladies sitting beside me and I I mean I don't know these these
individuals but um I can tell you they were very scared the nois is coming out of them do you ever get that when you're
in the movie theater and there's like somebody that that makes noise like they're scared too fast like before the
scary thing happens and then that scares you it trickles down to you doesn't it where you're like you start getting on
edge faster yeah yeah she kept like like one of those and there was nothing like it wasn't going on yet yeah
I mean this is definitely part of the slasher film genre and I I guess part of part of that genre is to make you jump
but but sometimes I'm not in the mood for it it's just like when people like we're Midwest so haunted houses and
stuff like that that's like a big deal like when you're middle school and high school you stand in line with your
girlfriend and you get hot chocolate and you and you you're going to pay for people to jump out and touch you but
you're not allowed to touch them which always drove me nuts like what if they get too close well remember there was
one when we were teenagers that was reported they arrested some of the people because they were
groping the people that were going through the uh they were very rap hey come come for the come for the screams
and the scares the groping is free yeah the groping is that's just is a bonus hey you think you're touching my
girlfriend but you're really touching me right they're groping people no I just uh sometimes I thought they were great
I'd be like oh man these haunted houses are really great and other times I'd be sitting there thinking why am I paying
five bucks to walk through this thing and to get scared some of them I really like the thing I don't like and I I
don't know if I've talked about this before on here but it's going to make me sound like a like a big chicken um a big
you ever get in the ones where like all of a sudden it's completely dark and there's no lights at all M like and I
don't know there's got to be some kind of terminology for a fear of that and it's not that I'm afraid of the dark
it's afraid of being in a space that I've never navigated before right and now I'm in Pitch Black and I'm like
feeling my way and what's unfortunate I guess is if you really think about it that's what
visually impaired people have to deal with and that man that would be terrifying but to navigate my way
through a space that I've never been in one and Pitch total Blackness and then you don't know you do feel things touch
you from time to time and you're like oh is that the gropey guy or is it just part of that me groping
myself right wow I'm groping myself again no uh I heard a thing where Burke ker the
comedian would take showers in the dark because he thought is he the big guy that smiles a lot the guy with like the
best laugh of all time yeah the machine is what they call him machete the machete the machete machine um he would
take showers in the dark so just in case he ever went blind he would at least hey
I got showering down I figured out the shower thing yeah and then the next step would you know hey now can I get ready
in the dark and if you could do a bunch of that stuff then you'd be preparing yourself just in case you would think
like I do very well at my house like if my house is completely pitch black like there's times I get up in the middle of
the night to go get something maybe from the refrigerator or whatever and I don't
even flip on any lights I can just I could Sleepwalk my way through the house but you put me in a space man like that
that I've never been in and it's completely black I do not do well you usually what I do is I just kind of I
kind of like just freeze up like I'll continue to advance forward but in an extremely slow rate to the point where
people behind me are starting to you know my favorite new thing about the haunted houses around here is they take
like a pitch black room mhm and then the moment that they have a bunch of people
jump out and scare you and lights show up like lights like a a single strobe like a boom yeah and just something
where everybody's going to be like oh they take a picture and and so you can get the picture
afterwards and they're like hilarious cuz some of the guys that are trying to act tough are like right freaking out of
their mind but one of the things I used to like to do is go through the haunted house and at some point I would let the
group go ahead of me like my my buddies and then I would sneak out of the the haunted house and then I'd go to the end
like part partway through find a way out I'd find a way out or I'd start just going backwards like I'll just you know
they'd be like you found a wormhole and you time traveled to the end of it well no but it's to freak out my friends so
then they'd come to the end and they' just be like where did he go where did he go and I'd hear him like he was right
behind us and like it would just be this whole confusing thing and I'd just be sitting somewhere watching them do this
that was my favorite part of the whole one time I did something similar to that without the intention of doing something
like that m i i dis like the group I was with lost me part part of the way through and
found me again at the end but it was only because something startled me so much that I took off in a full Sprint
and I didn't stop until I got to the end like I just I just man on that day I wish like NFL Scouts would have been
there because I've never been faster in my life I would have been drafted to some team off of off of white man scared
speed alone you know here's my other thing dude the thing that the thing that I think about
when I'm standing in line for those I'm like how many of these haunted houses am
I going to go to until some jackass forgets to take the chain off of the Chainsaw right and he's chasing me with
it and there's teeth on that thing yeah well there is a new movie where it's like U it's like a haunted theme park
type thing mhm where it's like people are supposed to jump out in going scare you and the the whole idea of the movie
is that somebody's going around killing people that's a brilliant movie that's a
brilliant idea new slasher film I I can't remember what it's called I hope it's a good one I there's to be honest
with you I don't find most of them good and IED houses no no no the scary movies
all right right right so like you know out of five I usually I think two out of five are usually fairly good fairly
decent yeah I think it's depending on how you're what you're looking oh because look I mean you watch they're
they're all supposed to be a little cheesy they're all supposed to be a little campy right they're supposed to
have some goofy jokes in there that don't land too well right right like that's that's what it's about and then
and back in the day the slasher film would be like oh and you might see some boobs right right that was like a thing
I don't think that's a thing anymore I think they got away from that and and it actually might see some boobs there was
a some of them seem to be based around the whole idea of hey right this is a rated R movie we can have nudity in it
right and to be to be real here you know I know I referen Ted Bundy a lot but we
were talked we talked about Ted Bundy blaming remember that portion where he blamed his his uh homicides on on
pornography right I wish that that interview could have been longer and maybe a little more clear and concise
because I wonder there's some old especially we're talking about early' 70s mid 70s horror films that involve
like rape scenes right and he did reference po pornography and slasher films and part of me wondered like was
he did he specifically mean this because on the outside looking in when we first
hear that interview it's like oh well here's this this guy who just basically some lobbyist comes forward and and
tells him hey let's I'm from the church let's blame your bad Deeds on pornography so we can get rid of
pornography throughout this whole country and that's what it comes off as where you're like oh this is just a
chance to blame pornography for for this is what you will turn into if you watch
pornography and I'm curious of what he meant with some of those some of those ones that portray rape or some of them
they're like um I can't I I won't name any specific but I found some on like shudder or
Netflix or prime and I'm going and I'm looking for a scary movie and if it you can read that in the description it will
say like scenes of rape or this monster does this and I'm always like nope nope not watching that no and that's what I
wonder if if Ted bunny was talking about those that he was attracted for or attracted to those types of movies for
some reason yeah the my other issue with that genre in general is like when they
get to gory I think it was the remake of uh Texas chainsa massacre with uh Jessica Beal and it was that a Rob
Zombie joint I it might not be I don't think so uh Jessica Beal which for some reason
like anytime she's in a movie it just doesn't do well in the box office but she's beautiful and she's actually a
really good actress does America hate Jessica I I don't know how they can I mean she's
married to Justin Timberlake I mean she that's right she is married to Justin Tim JT and she was on Seventh Heaven she
was she's she's very talented very beautiful and and strong you I like strong women I think that's a a very
great quality but anyways she's in that movie and the problem with that movie uh big fan of Texas chainsaw
massacure in general but that movie is so gory that it gets to the point where I'm like yeah this just is not enjoyable
anymore well I see I think that's what I thought about the Rob Zombie reboot for
Halloween right was I watched the first one and I'm like man they really just kind of steroid did this thing up a
little too much for me and maybe maybe part of that too is that I liked the first one the original so much that
sometimes you hold things in such high regard that you don't give something else a chance I didn't watch the second
Halloween that was done by um Rob Zombie so did he do too yeah I believe so so out of all the the movies we went
through like I said I think there are 10 plus the new one that came out and in all honesty there are two that I've
never seen I've never seen Halloween resurrection or the second Rob Zombie Halloween yeah and if you ever get a
chance something great to watch is the making of Halloween the first one yeah yeah it's so interesting because it's
shot pretty much all in in California but it's supposed to be based in Iowa so they had a couple bags of
leaves so they have to dump out the leaves all over the yards it's Illinois was it Illinois yeah okay so
then what they'd have to do is they so they dump it out and once they dumped it out they'd have to go back and collect
the leaves after each scene which which is just hilarious so when you watch the movie back you think is like there's a
lot of leaves in this scene I saw that leave before I saw that same it's following me can I I'm going
to give a couple things away okay and they're not it's not going to ruin any part of the movie for you I I have my
hand up all right uh the things that I loved so much about the new movie is they brought back a lot of the what I
would call iconic sound effects from the first movie mhm they brought a lot of that back so some of those sound effects
that I like there's that weird I don't even know how to describe it but it's like there's that little noise that they
make when it's kind of something oh something shocking or something you should be paying attention to kind of to
hint you that something big is about to happen they brought back that noise and they also brought back the the bright
orange lettering yeah which I thought was great from the it it was really cool because it really made you feel like you
were pick right up where you left off from the 1978 movie yeah what's interesting is when you read like what
it's about the original it's it's a story of a serial killer who stalks and kills teenage babysitters on Halloween
night and that's just enough where you go oh that's that's going to be good in one or two of the movies Mike Myers is
even referred to as the babysitter killer so yeah so the idea is the idea is a serial killer if you haven't seen
the first one 1978 you have to watch it and I think you I think the new one's a mustsee as well the 2018 it's intense
and remember I give it a full yeah full and that's the highest Mark you can really give a film well I I hope
everybody has a great Halloween it's a great time of year one of my favorite things used to be walking kids around
and collecting candy and so I'm I'm actually excited to pass out candy this year and and so I hope everybody has a
great Halloween I enjoy passing out the candy more than than collecting it when I was a kid you enjoy eating the candy
well I do kind of sneak some away I do the old one for you two for me one for you oh no no you can't have that one but
I like to put out I put out some like uh a few decorations nothing over the top but a few decorations I like to change
up the lights a little bit like go like like a little green or orange or purple lighting and my favorite thing though to
do is I get the I get the fire pick going get the fire pit all fired up and I stand out there you throw kids in
there stand come kids stand out on the I like to stand out on the front porch so
that they know hey you can count on this house having something or at least this
house has that white guy standing on the front porch yeah I always like to ask the kids trick or treat and if they say
trick I punch them right in the face I do a little music in the background too little music but what I here's where I
always screw up and I know I'm electric banana electric banana is a great song If it even
exists uh where I always screw up is I always say every year that I'm going to get some like Halloween type music like
I don't know if it would be sound effects or at the very least Monster Mash yeah Monster Mash is great Stu
Monster Mash I would if I could talk like that guy all the time I just would but I wish you would and then what
happens last minute I'm always like nope I failed again well don't you have like
apple music or something you could probably I don't do that remember I'm a CD guy I'm I'm I'm an old school guy wow
you know what works in a pinch though is some some Alice Cooper will work in a pinch in that situation was his feed
feed my Frankenstein was a good one it's a little too sexual No More Mr Nice Guy
but the kids don't the kids don't know right but the parents know actually maybe they maybe they do know cuz I
think I knew they're like oh come on what is this guy listening to this is awful Michael Jackson's Thriller oh I
love Thriller and I love but I love when houses will have little creepy sounds coming from yeah I I think it's a nice
little touch so everybody have a good safe and happy Halloween [Music] cheers [Applause]
