Approximately two months before the Sodder family home burned on December 25, 1945, in Fayetteville, West Virginia, George Sodder’s former employer, Fiorenzo Janutolo, allegedly warned that George’s house would go up in smoke and his children would be destroyed.

George had known Fiorenzo for years. Fiorenzo reportedly helped the Sodders purchase building materials in 1935, but their relationship deteriorated after George started his own trucking company in 1943. According to Sodder family accounts, George later refused an insurance salesman’s request to increase coverage on the home and add life insurance for the family. Yet the home’s policy reportedly increased from $1,500 to $1,750, and Fiorenzo allegedly received the payout after the fire.

Fiorenzo’s granddaughter strongly disputes the family’s suspicions and remembers him as a kind, well-liked man. Nothing in these accounts proves he was involved in the disappearance of Maurice Sodder, Martha Sodder, Louis Sodder, Jennie Sodder, and Betty Sodder. But should investigators have questioned a man who allegedly predicted the fire before it happened?
