this week's 48 Hours investigates the murder of a newly engaged ivy league grad student 26 years old a Yale student
and former former Army National Guardsman Kevin Jong was gunned down in February this was 2021 and it appeared
to be road rage but authorities quickly began to question if he was in fact targeted 48 Hours correspondent anmie
green investigates in the winter of 2020 an unknown gunman fired bullet into four
homes in affluent New Haven neighborhoods homicide detective David zoy it's 45 caliber casings that were
located at all four of those scenes fortunately no one was hurt but that changed when Yale graduate student Kevin
Jong was gunned down in the street Kevin had recently proposed to his girlfriend
Zion Perry moments before the shooting a dark SUV hit Kevin's car captured on a neighbor's surv surveillance camera we
zoomed in for clarity you see Kevin's Prius pull into frame and the SUV pulls up behind
him and then reverses out of frame you see Kevin exit his vehicle and then walk out of frame to approach the
SUV seconds later eight shots were fired 45 caliber shell casings were left at the
scene that same night in nearby North Haven a dark SUV got stuck on Snowy railroad tracks is there any way to get
us stuck here local police responded on aware of Kevin's murder do you have your
driver's license on you yes the driver was kining pan an MIT grad student police took note of a blue bag and
briefcase in the car and pan left the scene in a tow truck 15 hours later word was now out about the murder and
suspicious bags were discovered outside an Arby's we found a gun and probably like 10 boxes of bullets the bullets
were 45 caliber and there was more a blue bag and briefcase Sergeant Jeffrey Mills it instantly hit me these are the
bags that were in Mr Pond's car the night before kinhin pan was now the prime suspect in Kevin's murder all they had
to do was find him sounds like it might have been hard em and Green joins us now um so there
there were several shootings in the area at the night of that shooting were they
related well this is the thing this is sort of during the pandemic a lot of cities were seeing kind of a spike in
crime but what investigators believe is that those shootings were part of a very
elaborate premeditated scheme to make Kevin's murder seemed like it was part of a shooting spree
