On the night of July 3, 1997, Bonnie Lee Schultz, a 45-year-old mother of two, walked out of her home in Indianapolis, Indiana, and drove away in her blue 1990 Mercury Saber. She told her husband, Richard “Rick” Schultz, she was going to watch fireworks with coworkers and promised she’d be home to take her daughter to a movie the next day. She never came back.

In the hours before she vanished, Bonnie had made a life-altering decision. After 26 years of marriage, she told Rick she wanted a divorce. Friends say she felt unappreciated, isolated, and ready to finally choose herself. That same night, she spent time with coworkers at Houlihan’s, a house party, and later the Time Out Lounge where she was last seen just before dawn. When Bonnie failed to return home, the initial response was slow. A holiday weekend passed before a detective was assigned. No crime scene was identified. Her car was never found. And early assumptions shaped the direction of the case for decades to come.

As investigators began retracing Bonnie’s final movements, from Allisonville Road to 62nd Street, and the last place she was seen near, questions mounted. Why did potential evidence go unexplored in the critical early days?

In Part 1 of this investigation, Ashley Flowers and Brit Prawat peel back the layers of a disappearance that has haunted Indianapolis for nearly 30 years. This is a case often framed as “obvious,” yet never solved. As suspicion hardened around one person, other possibilities quietly faded into the background. And one small, unsettling detail, a necklace Bonnie’s daughter remembered her wearing, may change how everything is understood. This is not the story you think you know.
