DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): Next on "Unsolved Mysteries," for more than 30 years strange formations
have appeared in the wheat fields of southern England. Does new evidence to explain these mysterious crop circles?
A quarter of a million dollars worth of platinum is stolen from a factory and the security guard is missing.
Two investigators develop different theories when a woman dies in a mysterious car fire.
Was it a tragic accident, or was it cold-blooded murder? And [inaudible] family man turns out to be running
a million dollar drug ring. Five compelling cases, some just waiting to be solved,
and maybe you hold the key. I'm Dennis Farina and this is "Unsolved Mysteries." [theme music]
50-year-old Dale [inaudible] worked at the Corning Glassworks plant for 27 years as a security
guard and maintenance man. One night at 11:00 PM, he began his usual weekend shift.
Before the night was over, $250,000 worth of platinum pipe was stolen and Dale Kerstetter had vanished.
Pound for pound, platinum is one of the most valuable commodities in the world. After Dale Kerstetter and a fortune in platinum
disappeared, police began to wonder-- was he a robbery victim or was he the robber himself?
By all accounts, Dale was an ordinary man who was loved by his family and respected by his employer.
He was very compassionate, honest, liked to have fun, loved the outdoors. He's just a great father.
I mean, there wasn't a kid in the world that wouldn't want to have him as their dad.
He was very faithful to everybody and he hated a lie, never believed in lying. DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): On Sunday morning,
security guard John Lindquist arrived at 7:00 AM. He expected to find Dale waiting to be relieved.
He was usually sitting right inside the door. He wasn't there, so I walked into the cafeteria
and I see his lunch pail sitting on the table. I happen to pick up the newspaper
and there the keys were. So I looked in his lunch pail and I see everything is there,
he hadn't eaten. DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): Later Sunday morning, Dale's pickup truck was found in the plant parking lot.
Police were called to investigate. A number of clues suggested that Dale did not disappear voluntarily.
His keys were still in the ignition and he left behind a full carton of cigarettes,
an empty gun holster from his 22-caliber pistol, and his daypack. pack. That afternoon, the sheriff's K-9 unit
was brought in to track Dale's movements through the huge plant. The dog led police to the second floor,
to the plant's glass furnace, also known as the tank. The tank contained the valuable platinum pipe,
but the area was not part of Dale's normal rounds. Although the dog found Dale's scent near the tank,
he was nowhere in the building. Video from the plant security camera was examined next.
A plant manager, Patrick Foley, was disturbed by what he saw. We have recreated the key sequences found on the tapes.
The first thing I saw was a masked man in the back of the plant in one area. When I saw the masked man on the tape, I was very alarmed.
At first, I thought, well, obviously, this person there's been some foul play, Dale's involved in foul play
and he probably is missing. And then Dale Kerstetter came back and met this masked person
in the back of the plant. I guess I would say I had a very empty feeling in my stomach.
I said, what on Earth? Then as I continued to review the tapes and I saw the masked person come back out
and go up to the tank area, then I was extremely anxious because at that time I realized that not only did we have
a missing employee, there was a good possibility that we had missing platinum in the plant.
Whoever removed the platinum from the tank was extremely familiar with the plant, everything in the plant.
They knew exactly where to go. DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): The police could not tell if Dale was being coerced
or if he was part of the heist. At one point, he looks directly into the camera.
Was he signaling for help, or was he cooly flaunting his crime? If he was involved, why would he
willingly walk in front of a camera knowing that it was there? He knew the camera was there.
Why wouldn't an attempt have been made to cover the camera? It just doesn't make sense.
The fact that he did everything in front of cameras was once again just Dale Kerstetter just saying to us,
look, here I am. I'm taking your plant and there isn't a thing you can do about.
If he had planned on taking off anywhere, why would he bother packing lunch? I mean, just a whole carton of cigarettes
and he smoked all the time-- I mean, he would have taken his cigarettes. DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): Wendy believes that her father was
an innocent victim, that he heard or saw something that attracted his attention and then he went to investigate.
She believes a thief may have murdered her father. One camera showed the intruder wheeling out a heavy bag.
There's a very good possibility that bag could contain the platinum and there's a very good possibility
that bag could contain the body of Dale Kerstetter. DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): Another theory
places Dale at the center of a bold and premeditated robbery. Dale was happy as a trades worker.
Unfortunately, prior to this incident he had just been cut out of the trade shop, which entailed about a $5,000 to $7,000 cut for him.
He was not a happy person at the time of his death. Through our investigation, we determined that Dale Kerstetter
was approximately $30,000 to $40,000 in arrears on various payments-- trailer payments, vehicle payments,
and different bills which he had owed throughout the area. He had children that could take care of him,
I was in a financial position to take care of him. He had stock in Corning, he had money invested.
If it got to the point where he really needed money, there were too many ways he could have obtained the money
legally. DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): Dale's family wants to know if he is alive. Whether he committed the crime or not, they want the truth.
He had six kids, two grandkids. To do something like that and not call any of them,
just take off and never talk to your kids again-- I just-- I just can't believe it.
I don't care whether he was involved. That's not going to make me think any less of him
or love him any less. What I want to know is what happened. Was he involved, did he get away with it, is he dead somewhere,
was he abducted? I don't think he'd do it unless he planned on coming back someday.
If he's alive, which I think he is, he's either in Canada or I'd say in Australia.
And I figure in seven years, when the statute of limitations is up, he'll come back Scot free and then
we'll be able to touch him. DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): Dale Kerstetter is five feet, four inches tall and weighs 130 pounds.
He has blue eyes, brown and gray hair, and receding hairline. If you have any information about this case,

two respected investigators disagree on the cause of death. New Rockford, North Dakota.
This is ridiculous. We don't know where our son is. DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): At 2:30 in the morning,
Kathy Bonderson has an argument with her husband about their teenage son. - You go look for him then. - OK.
DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): He was out late again without permission. I hope you have a heck of a lot better luck than I did.
As As a night nurse, Kathy has never missed a shift, but tonight she is so concerned that she calls in sick.
Around 2:45 AM, her son is on his way home with his girlfriend when he sees his mother's
car heading out of town. That's my mom's car. Jeez, I hope she didn't see me. DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): And then he spots another car
following close behind. He assumes his mother is driving her own car, but in fact, he can't clearly see
the driver in either vehicle. [sirens] An hour later, on a lonely road, a car is burning out of control.
The heat is so intense that 15 minutes pass before firefighters can get close enough to look inside.
When they do, they find a body on the floor of the passenger side. The victim is later identified as 35-year-old Kathy Bonderson.
Daybreak, the car is finally cool enough to pull Kathy's body from the wreckage.
The local sheriff, Edward Allmaras, investigates. E.J. ALLMARAS (VOICEOVER): As I remember it,
the firewall was completely burned, the steering column, the dash, the front seat.
The only thing that was left was the steel. Listen, I'd like to have you have the boys flush it out so if there's
any fragments of the fire-- The fire had to start up front someplace. There could have been a short, a wire pinched or something,
because that car was doing some bending also when it went across those tracks. DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): Sheriff Allmaras
believes that Kathy lost control of her car before reaching the railroad crossing
and then bounced across the tracks. The car made an abrupt turn as if it was trying
to avoid something, then straightened up and went across the tracks. There were marks on the tracks which showed us
that the car had very definitely went over the tracks at the crossing. DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): Allmaras is convinced
that when Kathy hit the tracks at high speed, it sparked the fire and threw Kathy
to the floor in the passenger's side of her car. Sheriff Allmaras was convinced Kathy Bonderson was the victim
of a tragic accident. But then a state investigator offered a more disturbing theory, that Kathy Bonderson was murdered.
The day after the fire, Captain William Byram of the highway patrol visited the scene
to file a routine report. It was an unusual case. It didn't seem to have the same characteristics
that a normal accident would have. Granted, I arrived 24 hours later, but I could not distinguish any marks where
a car had left the roadway. DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): Byram did find the same marks on the tracks
that Sheriff Allmaras believes were made by Kathy's car, but he came to a different conclusion.
The marks I found were a reddish color. We talked with the firemen, and the hoses
that were used that night were a red rubber hose and they had been in and around that area, drug the hoses
over the tracks. I felt that what I was looking at was something that had been put there by them.
DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): The next day, Byram and the state fire marshal took a close look at Kathy's car.
I see that it's totally burned, but I see absolutely no damage structure-wise from impact,
which is normal to find in this type of an accident. But I couldn't find any. I found none, zero.
DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): Surprisingly, even after such an intense fire, the gas tank
was still half full. WILLIAM BYRAM (VOICEOVER): The fuel line from the tank itself to the carburetor was intact--
no cracks, no dents, no damage whatsoever. It doesn't appear that we had any impact on--
DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): Based on the evidence, the fire marshal came to his own chilling conclusion.
It appeared the fire started in several different areas, which would not be normally found in an accidental fire.
There's no question in my mind the fire was not an accident. This fire was intentionally set.
DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): Three weeks later, Captain Byram requested that Kathy's
body be exhumed for an autopsy. Sheriff Allmaras objected. Byram threatened to obtain a court order.
Sheriff Allmaras backed off. One of the very important facts from the autopsy proved that Kathy Bonderson was dead before the fire started.
DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): According to the pathology report, there was no carbon monoxide
in Kathy's lungs, which means that when the fire started she was already dead. Tests conducted on Kathy's clothing,
as well as the vehicle's carpeting, revealed traces of gasoline. In addition, an empty gas container
was found only 300 yards from where the car had burned. But for Sheriff Allmaras, it still wasn't
enough to change his opinion. There has been no proof offered. Nothing in my investigation brought up
anything that even would give you an inkling that this might be a homicide, rather than a car accident--
nothing. There are too many other facts leading me to believe that it was not an accident,
and I have to work with facts. DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): Captain Byram is convinced that Katy Bonderson was murdered
and that her car was set on fire to make it look like an accident. But the question remains, who killed her and why?
Update-- 18 years after Kathy's death, the North Dakota Bureau of Criminal Investigation
reopened her case. They scheduled an interview with Kathy's husband, Robert Bonderson, but before the meeting could take place
he committed suicide. Based on new interviews and a review of the evidence, authorities concluded that Robert
Bonderson murdered his wife. The case was finally closed. Coming up, crop circles in England--
could these elaborate formations be a hoax or a supernatural phenomenon? The county of Wiltshire, southern England.
Charity Down, a farm two hours from London. On a foggy spring morning, Chris Wood
drives his tractor through one of his wheat fields and find something that he has never seen before.
A huge circle has appeared in the wheat. It's really amazing how the actual crop
was laying on the ground. And it was so perfect, really. DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): The crop circle that Chris
found has never been explained. In the following years, more than 750 large circles
have formed overnight in random fields. The question is, how did they get there?
The most wonderful thing about it is when you actually go out the night before to look
for a circle and there's nothing there, it's just a lovely field of growing corn,
and then the following morning when you get up early in the morning in the first light of day
and suddenly there is the circle. You just can't believe it. DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): The crop circles are pressed down
in a swirling pattern that runs both clockwise and counterclockwise. The crop is not damaged.
It continues to grow and can be harvested normally. Strangely, no footprints or tire tracks leading up to this site
have ever been found and the circus display a wide variety of shapes and patterns.
We've got a flare here, a radial flare here. That's right. And that seems to be the heart.
DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): Pat Delgado and Collin Andrews have spent 10 years trying to figure
out what's really happening in the wheat fields of England. Now it's beginning to show.
We have invited many professional scientists of various disciplines to help us in this investigation.
And quite rightly so, they start off with considering that it could be a hoax. DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): Dr. Archibald Roy has been studying
crop circles since 1980. I think that it's very reasonable for a person to say, look, these are hoaxes because they
look so artificial. But I don't think that the hoax theory can be held very strongly because there
are so many of these circles. Now in eight or nine years, about 700-- 250 this year, this summer alone.
The amount of time that would have to be spent by a very big team of people making those circles
is getting quite enormous. I simply don't see the hoax theory as a very strong contender.
DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): As part of a television experiment, British troops attempted to create
an artificial crop circle. In all instances where something mechanical was used to flatten the crop, you will damage it.
And we can walk into a circle and very, very quickly determine whether it's hoaxed
and that is mechanically made, or it is a naturally created one. When we examine a naturally made circle,
the portion of plant that just comes out of the ground must be softened, bent over, and then hardened up again.
So not only is a mystery in the circle itself, but what is it that is softening the plant,
bending it over, and then hardening up again? This is a real mystery. DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): If the crop
circles are not a hoax, then who or what is making them? There are no underground formations
like sinkholes or rocks that might give shape to the patterns. Some have suggested that whirlwinds
could have created them. But after careful study, there is no evidence that crop circles are the result
of any natural force. There's got to be an intelligently manipulated inexplicable energy used here, and we don't
know the first thing about it. But it's there. DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): Sometimes the appearance
of crop circles can be linked to sightings of bright lights in the night sky. One such sighting took place when Pat and Jack
Collins were driving through a stretch of farmland near Stonehenge. We'd been out in the evening and on our way back,
about 11 o'clock at night, we saw this circle with lights all the way around the edge.
He said, ooh, look at that. I said, good gracious. I said, whatever can it be? And so we said, it couldn't be a flying saucer or anything.
DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): Collin Andrews believes the lights can be connected to two
different sets of crop circles. The same night as they saw this extraordinary clustering
of lights over that site, a quintuple set appeared in a field just a few miles to the east near Alresford and the same kind of formation
was found just a few days later in a very remote spot south of Andover. And the alignment of those two sites
took us directly over the top of the Collins' particular sighting. I haven't the faintest idea what is causing these circles.
I find them a most intriguing and entertaining mystery. A lot of the circles appear in the vicinity
of the great megalithic monuments of southern England. Now, if these circles have been appearing for let's say 5,000
years, then they would have been appearing in the wheat fields and corn fields of the megalithic farmers.
What would they have made of them? Would they have said, these are signs from the gods?
Perhaps we should build monuments which mimic these circles. And so they would build things like Stonehenge.
It's an intriguing possibility. We haven't actually seen one of these this year, and this--
DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): Hoping to solve the mystery, more than 50 researchers
descended on a farm where many crop circles have been discovered. They surrounded a field with audio and video equipment.
There's a terrible noise just as you stand in the center. Are you getting noise here very, very badly?
DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): Although no crop circles formed, the study did record one significant event.
What happened was that Pat and myself were being interviewed in the largest circle we'd ever seen when the sound man
detected an electronic warbling noise which came onto the sound equipment. And Pat, who was stood just off the center of the formation
inside the circle, could actually physically feel an energy field right alongside him.
When he stepped into that energy field, with noise pick right up. And when Pat stood out of the barrier, it diminished.
It was very extraordinary. It is very significant. We do now have a noise component associated
with this extraordinary phenomenon. DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): Since we originally
aired this story, hundreds of new crop circles had been reported-- not just in England, but in the United States,
Canada, and Australia, as well. These new formations have become more elaborate and greater in size.
One of the most interesting appeared in the English countryside. It is the largest crop circle recorded
to date and Collin Andrews is convinced it cannot be a hoax. We're looking at a marking which was about 1/8 of a mile
long. Now, if you consider that under controlled conditions, it takes a team of 12 people to create something
like a 100-foot diameter circle, a straightforward simple circle takes something like six hours for them to construct this,
we are looking at a huge team of people working that night in the hours of darkness which are only
seven hours at this time of the year in a location which can be seen from vantage points all around.
DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): Botanists have studied the cells of plants collected from inside the crop circles.
When these plants cells were compared with samples collected outside the circles,
the scientists were amazed. The plants taken from outside the circle had clouded crystals in erratic patterns.
The samples taken from inside the circle had distinctive clear crystals with a defined pattern.
I think the discrepancies are caused by some supernatural force which is being applied
to that particular part of the ground which produces these patterns. We have here a structure of a plant which has changed.
Human feet cannot do that. The downwash from a helicopter cannot do that, nor can a stationary whirlwind.
So we're looking here at major clues in the last few months of this year. DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): The physical evidence
of plant cells supports the theory that crop circles may not be a hoax. Update-- two men from Southampton,
England confessed to creating the crop circles as a prank after a night of drinking at a local pub.
However, crop circle believers refute these claims and suggest that the designs are far too
complex and perfectly executed to be the work of a couple of hoaxers. So are these strange complex patterns the product
of some unknown intelligence, or are they just good-natured pranks? Whatever the answer is, crop circles
remain an unsolved mystery. Next, Neal Gott-- nice guy, family man? Wrong. He's actually the boss of a million dollar drug ring.
North Benton, Ohio. Neal Gott certainly seemed like a normal guy. Good luck, darling.
DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): He and his wife, Terry, have lived in this small town for a little more
than four years. The Gotts on the surface appeared to be a very legitimate couple.
He was a mechanic who had a place called Lake Park Auto. She had a cleaning business where she cleaned houses.
They had a two-year-old daughter, Heather Gott, that was a very attractive blonde-headed little girl.
And everything appeared to be normal unless you lived in the community and had heard some of the rumors or unless you were an FBI agent
and you had access to what we knew. DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): What the FBI knew was that Neil Gott was making
an awful lot of phone calls to a drug dealer in Akron, Ohio. Flip around, you know what I mean?
DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): The FBI listened patiently until Gott placed an order
for eight ounces of cocaine. DRUG DEALER (ON PHONE): Eight of them? NEIL GOTT (ON PHONE): Yeah. Give me an eight-pack.
When he made the buy, the FBI was waiting. But agents didn't take Gott into custody.
Instead, they bet on a risky plan. We wanted the cocaine, but we were not going to arrest Neil Gott because we wanted
to continue our investigation till we got everybody in his network. DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): Neil Gott did not disappoint.
He went straight home and called his buyers and told them there would be no more cocaine.
Now the FBI had the names of Gott's drug ring and a hunch that he was hiding something else.
We became suspicious of other areas of Neil Gott's activities. For instance, he had rented a barn in Homeworth, Ohio.
And in this barn, which was supposedly empty or being used for occasional auto repairs, we looked at electric bills
in the neighborhood of $1,800 to $1,900 a month. Whereas in that type of building,
the electric bill shouldn't be over $50. And that was our clue that they were probably growing marijuana hydroponically
in that property. DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): The FBI moved in on Neil and Terry again.
His indoor growing operation was everything we expected and much more. It was a very sophisticated operation with expensive strobe
lights, which are heating lamps; expensive timers; irrigation piping and tubing for all these various plants;
grow packs. Everything a successful marijuana operation for an indoor grow needed, Neil Gott had.
Inside with that kind of secrecy, in normal cases you can harvest at a minimum four times a year.
Your minimum harvest would be in the neighborhood of $75,000 to $100,000. DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): In addition to the marijuana,
agents also found high-powered rifles, handguns, and explosives. This time, Neil and Terry Gott were arrested.
FBI agents arrested every member of the Gotts' drug ring, another 20 people. The Gotts were able to post bail and were let go.
On their arraignment date, most of the suspects showed up in court-- everyone but Neil and Terry Gott.
The day before their indictments were handed down, the Gotts had packed up their belongings.
They left town, they left the state, and disappeared without a trace. Neil Gott ended up in Florida--
at least, that's where he dropped the U-Haul truck. We believe the Gotts are still in the United States.
Neil Gott is a powerboat enthusiast, the kind of cigarette type boats. He enjoys that kind of activity.
So we feel wherever he is, he's probably engaging in that. He's a truck driver and he's also an accomplished mechanic.
But what Neil Gott does best is he grows dope, marijuana specifically. So we definitely feel he's engaged in that activity.
DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): Update-- thanks to a tip from one of our viewers, Neil and Terry Gott
were arrested by the FBI in Lake County, Florida. Agents found them with over $1 million
worth of marijuana and cocaine. Each was convicted on a single drug charge. Both served time in a federal prison
and have since been released. Next, do adopted children and their birth families
share psychic connections? Don Larkin grew up knowing that he had been abducted,
but it wasn't until he was 44 years old that he finally located his birth mother, Betty Landers.
When Don approached his mother's house for the first time, he noticed the knickknacks hanging
in the window, a carved hummingbird and a crystal prism. Don had only seen these items together in one other place,
in the front window of his own home. It really startled me to see somebody else have something like that in the window of their house.
And I just thought, well, she must be a pretty neat lady because she picked the same stuff I did.
Coincidences that are very rare, such as Betty and Don's both having hummingbirds
and crystals in their front windows of their houses, are almost impossible to explain by the traditional cause-effect
genetic relationship. That's a very good example of one that is probably due to some unknown
spiritual psychic connection. DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): Many believe that the same bond exists between separated brothers
and sisters. Lorelei Smith was the only daughter of her adoptive parents, and yet even as a four-year-old,
she sensed that somewhere she had a sister. Yes, I do. I was so firm about it one of the teachers
felt it necessary to contact my parents. I was told at the time not to continue with this illusion
or fantasy, but I apparently still kept insisting I had a sister. But I still don't think you have a sister.
Yes, I do. She has curly blonde hair and she's pretty. At that time in 1959, Lorelei did, indeed, have a sister,
Lori, then one and a half years old. And we were living in Alaska and Lorelei was in New Mexico.
DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): Lorelei Smith and her sister, Lori Stiffler, learned that they had much more in common
than just their first names. Both owned horses and both played the flute and the guitar.
And they had each learned sign language, even though neither one knew a single deaf person.
I believe that the most common explanation for these coincidences is probably genetic.
But there are coincidences that the genetic attachment, the genetic cause simply can't explain.
And then I think we have to look to a spiritual, a telepathic, a psychokinetic type of explanation,
difficult as that may be to do. DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): Elizabeth Bersanetti grew up with her adopted family
in southern California. For as long as she can remember, Elizabeth was drawn to anything
and everything French. I was just obsessed with the language. I wanted to be those people that I
saw in the films, the Parisians walking along, the students studying at the Sorbonne.
I wanted that identity, I wanted to be French. DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): Elizabeth began to have
a series of disturbing dreams. A shadowing movement always appeared and Elizabeth soon came to believe
that this was her birth mother. ELIZABETH BERSANETTI (VOICEOVER): My mother was being told that she didn't have very
long to live, that she had cancer and that it was going to progress at a very rapid rate.
There was a lot of sadness, I felt, from the dream. She was obviously varied gravely ill.
And to me, that said that she was dying. In late August, I woke up with almost the fact
that my mother was dead, I was never going to meet her. It was over, I was never going to see her.
I was too late. It was on me the whole day and all the days after that that I had missed her.
DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): The dream inspired Elizabeth to search for her birth mother.
Her adoptive mother provided information that helped get her started. I guess all the waivers are in.
All the waivers are in? DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): When she contacted the adoption
agency, she found out that just a few months earlier, her birth mother had also requested a reunion.
Could I have her name? Nicole Roland and she's French-Canadian. Bonjour. I'm looking for Nicole Roland, please.
WOMAN'S VOICE (ON PHONE): Who is this? I'm an old friend of hers from Los Angeles.
WOMAN'S VOICE (ON PHONE): I'm afraid I have bad news for you. Nicole has passed away.
When? WOMAN'S VOICE (ON PHONE): Last August. It was devastating. And I said, did she die on August 28?
And she said, yes. And she just broke into tears and said, how would you know that?
All I could think of was that my dreams were true, that I had this strange connection to her,
I had known when she was sick and I had known when she died. DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): Elizabeth
soon discovered that Nicole Roland had lived the life she had dreamed of. Her mother taught college French and earned her degree
at the Sorbonne in Paris. It seems that me and my birth mother had a lot in common
and would have had a lot in common had we been able to know each other. It appears that we were living at times a parallel life--
doing the same things, being in the same places, and interested in the same subjects.
DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): Although Elizabeth was never able to meet her birth mother, she
did find a whole new family. She flew to Canada to meet her half sister and a house full of her mother's friends and relatives.
During the visit, Elizabeth found even more links to her mother. Can I draw with you?
Sure. OK. Let's make it turquoise. I went to all the crayons and I selected a turquoise crayon,
which is sort of odd, I thought, but it was an unconscious thing. And I started drawing this house and I had never drawn
a house like this in my life. The door was on the wrong side, the garage was on the wrong side of the door,
and it had little weird dormers and turquoise trim. I just remarked even while I was drawing,
oh, this is a strange house. And well, it's a house, here it is. John, look at this.
The room got very quiet. Everybody seemed to be staring at me and I felt very uncomfortable.
Elizabeth, why did you draw this house? I don't know. Really, you don't know? No.
How is it? Nice. The day after I did the drawing, my sister took me to the house that she had lived
in with my mother and it was the house that I had drawn, the same little odd house with the peaked roof
and the turquoise trim and the garage on the wrong side. DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): Just before leaving Canada,
there was one final event that confirmed her connection with her birth mother. She would be so proud.
DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): A friend of Nicole's gave Elizabeth one of her mother's favorite books,
a collection of poems by a German writer. It was your mother's favorite book. DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): That same poet was
also one of her own favorites. In fact, Elizabeth brought the same book with her to Canada.
Merci. DENNIS FARINA (VOICEOVER): When we begin to look at the connections that seem to occur across both time and space,
we run into the inability of our current knowledge system to explain things like this.
But they happen so frequently that there must be some reality behind them. Maybe I am looking for a connection
to her that's deeper and more rooted than it might have been. But I tend to think that what I feel is very true.
She couldn't give me the legacy of knowing her or of having shared things with me,
so she shared things with me in another way. Elizabeth's father was a young medical student
