golf cart working yeah I get it working Friday but I didn't really do anything with it
and then so Saturday after a night of bar hopping and fine dining at 1am me and my good friend decided it
would be a great time to fire the golf cart up and do laps around the neighborhood and my property and we had
a good old time doing that which friend and nobody um nobody said anything about it which
was fantastic we didn't have any neighbors opening up their windows and yelling hey cut that out you crazy kids
I wanted to say that they'd say look at those old men right right driving around
on them actually I'm kind of in the country a little bit so you they might just fire shots at you
well but it's new it's a new house new house to you so that's that's interesting
well Captain we know this because we were just at crime con last month but for those of you that don't know
crimecon 2019 will be June 7th through the 9th in New Orleans so great City on moving south yeah yeah Indianapolis the
first year then then we go to Nashville Tennessee which was which was really cool and now we're going even further
south to New Orleans well I tell you what I'm very happy to to be a part of this because if we're invited back oh
well I mean there's [ __ ] I just assumed I just assumed that we were going to be
invited back last year we got an email saying hey thanks for coming and this year no evil we've not heard anything so
maybe they hate our guts all right well then I we just did a little promoting there for their big event but I'll tell
you what regardless we might not be there maybe next year's will be terrible but if
we're there it will be awesome uh Indianapolis was great we did that two years ago I was only able to stick
around for like an afternoon you spent the weekend there and I heard great stories from a lot of people not just
you telling me stories about you and about the good times they had with all the great podcasters there this year
Nashville I'll tell you what no disrespect to Indianapolis I love the city of Indianapolis you and I went
there years ago for the Big Ten championship and we had that's one like one of my favorite nights of hanging out
with buddies drinking the Buckeyes destroyed the Badgers that night we had a fan you lived in Indiana at that time
and we proceeded to go back to your place for the after party that was a great night but Nashville I love I love
Nashville what a great City and they had a great uh what was that the Gaylord Resort and Convention Center was hosting
the event and it anybody I'd never heard of it before it's like a it's like a city inside of a
city you're like in like a this biosphere some kind of it's like if you ever seen the movie biodome yeah and
basically the same thing inside this place you got a beautiful hotel and you have restaurants and bars which
was great because you kind of just if you're there for the whole weekend you park your car and then you go live in
this little bubble world for the whole weekend which involves nice restaurants and good bars and we just kept it was
great because we got to see you know we say like we're friends with Generation Y
uh truth and Justice thinking sideways there's so many of them I know I'm going to leave somebody out uh the mara Murray
guys yeah Tim and Lance Tim and Lance so I mean we're friends with all of these people we we get to interact with them
through email phone calls from time to time and we've been lucky enough to be on some of their shows
but to see everybody in person was was a lot of fun you know well they're really
I mean all the shows are really busy and we're busy every week I mean we have a new case every week so we kind of
you know we get you know little emails or little direct messages and passing but that's pretty much it so to to be
able to sit there for even 15-20 minutes and talk about how things are going because
they're very similar to us I mean you start this and the only people that really understand their experience that
me and you have gone through is me and you uh but the closest to understanding that experience is is
um you know like Aaron and Justin from Generation Y you know what I have to I my first
comment out of the gate has to be this okay I have an amazing amount of respect for Bob Ruff and Mike bussing they do
that truth and Justice podcast it's a great show and I'm enjoying this season because you and I are kind of
West Memphis Three junkies so I've been really digging in and listening to that and I remembered I remembered on our
show one time we were talking about Bob Ruff and for some reason well not for some reason I said it for the reason
that I thought I was correct at the time I said that he looks like Dan Le batard
from the who who for people that don't know Dan Le batard is like a sports uh he has a Sports Talk Show yeah so a very
accomplished broadcaster I I meant that in a in a in a good way however I saw Bob in person he does not look anything
like Dan Le batard uh maybe it's the voice that that reminds me of that but he does not look like like Dan Le batard
at all so Bob if you heard that I apologize unless you want to look like that maybe that's his maybe that's his
goal yeah it was it's funny too because so to break down how crimecon kind of works is there's there's three days
there's the Friday there's Saturday and Sunday and then they have these the main
thing that we did was a thing called podcast row and that was just inside the convention center they had these
different booths and different tables set up for all the the podcasters but what's funny was we were right by uh
thinking sideways and we're right by Bob and and uh Generation Y and crawl space
and it's it was almost like well here's our little corner of all all these guys are friends right and so the whole so
people would get in line to take your picture which I don't just find to be very
I I I can't even say it's flattering though it's nice I mean that people bother to wait in line to meet me and
say hi to me like I I think it it means something like and it actually like sometimes we need a bit of a pat on the
back for doing this because it is a lot of heavy lifting a lot of hard on the ass but so meeting everybody and and
hearing High Praise face to face was was very and actually for me it kind of came
at a much needed time uh I was we did a few cases in a row I was a little little
in the dark little uh in a dark place because of some of the cases we covered and meeting everybody put me in a great
mood and really lifted my spirit yeah that's that's nice right but but no I get what you're trying to say but it's
still a little and I don't want to say odd is I don't think odd is the right word
but it's something right it's like yeah don't you feel a little weird oh yeah yeah yeah because
um actually after after meeting some of the listeners and getting to know them a
little bit there's actually some listeners I would wait in line to meet now having met these people so but the
funny thing was you said that they they grouped us around a lot of the other podcasters that we've had previous
interactions with that we are we would say we're kind of podcasting friends right yeah the the here was one thing
that was Auto give we'll give a little behind the scenes here we've not mentioned this before but there's a
there's a show called True Crime Brewery I'm sure some people are familiar with it they're nice people I I don't know if
they're a husband and wife but they kind of just ripped off our show and what I thought was funny was the um I always
kind of suspected hey they just ripped off our show you and I didn't we don't have any ill will towards them so but we
just didn't go out of our way to say hello except for one of the uh the female host ran over to us and kind of
like sabotaged our line yeah we didn't even know who she was we didn't know who she was she like jumps between me and
the captain snaps a selfie and she goes we're friends and I said I said who are you yeah she goes I'm True Crime Brewery
and we get a lot of a lot of hate online because people say that we ripped off your show well maybe because you ripped
off our show this this picture will prove that we are friends so right here that proves a lot here's the whole
reality of that all that proves is that we we got Bamboozled into taking a picture with somebody we didn't know who
it was I wouldn't say we're not friends but we're definitely not friends no no no and and like look and we've
kind of and they started their show a while ago but when when we found out about it it was like it was kind of this
joke we talked about I think these weird people took our idea and they like and also like our formula
they started like doing their intros the way we did them and it's almost like they kept on listening to figure out
what are they going to do next so we can rip it off and that's fine and a lot of
people would bash them online and we never never did that because at the end of the day we know that they
um you know they are obviously passionate about true crime and they're trying to give content and put out free
material the problem is you ripped off the idea you know so I don't think you're a bad person but hey maybe you
should came up with your own idea so so what is that imitation is the greatest form of flattering is that what they say
so we should we should just say no imitation just makes you an [ __ ] you know so but but we're friends right
quotation marks we're friends I didn't think we're going to be bashing anybody no but uh so but it was yeah that was an
interesting interaction uh and then it was also interesting to it's just also as much as it's interesting for The
Listener to see us and hear our voices coming out of you know come out of our mouths that's what I heard a bunch like
it's so weird to see you and hear your voice coming out of your mouth um but I listen to thinking sideways so
much and to to hang out with those guys because on I think it was Friday wait we
got down there Thursday yeah and you just you went to uh some Honky Tonk so here's the thing Captain I
I did get approached by a few people because we did some meetups while we were there like so as the captain was
saying we'll give you a quick rundown of how it worked we did podcast row each day but it was like kind of like
early afternoon or morning time that we would do this podcast Row for about two hours two and a half hours you show up
we'll talk with you take a picture whatever right that was fantastic and then throughout the day they have all
these different speakers and presentations and events going on and then after hours the captain and I would
do uh we we went to a couple meetups at some different bars one within the resort one downtown Nashville which was
great so here's my reigning endorsement right here is the the tickets I'm not gonna lie because I'm a cheap bastard
the tickets are a little they're expensive you know everybody's got to work for a living everybody's got bills
to pay so it get can be tough to come up with travel money and I don't know what
is it 200 bucks for a ticket or something like that but here's what I will say I'm not for sure but but there
there's weekend passes and then there's day passes and then on top of that you have like VIP passes which gets you to
like the front of the line and get you into every yeah everything that you want so so there are varying levels of of
cost for tickets but what I will say that is this if you're worried about like value for
your dollar I'm telling you from from the time it starts on Friday morning till Sunday evening you will be busy the
entire time there will not be like a minute like I I didn't have a minute where there wasn't something going on
that was crime con related whether it be an after hours event that the podcasters
set up on their own or the events that crimecom put together they put together some very interesting ones I went to one
the Delphi murders where the families were there and they were speaking out and bringing more awareness to their
case they actually had the local sheriff there as well um so let's let's run down day by day
we'll do that well you do you were about to mention that you did something Thursday night and I I was going to say
that I did get approached at one of our meetups by some people that said hey you're uh Mr anti-social we don't see
you that much and and here here's here's my blanketed response to that not Mr I'm
a bastard not Mr anti-social at all actually my thing is I love Nashville and when I go to Nashville I want to see
some some country western bands I'm not even a big country western fan but you put me in Nashville why are you wearing
cowboy boots when you put me in Nashville I am a country western dude so I went out and hit the uh did what I
call honky Tonkin Thursday Friday and Saturday night I love that City but what did you do Thursday you were about to to
mention the thinking sideways crew yeah so Devin I'm friends with Devon from thinking sideways if you're not
listening to their show there it's a great show and um one of my favorites and so I was hanging out with Devin she
said hey there's a bunch of people um that are going to go to this whiskey bar so you want to go of course if you
want to go to the whiskey bar right um and then was that Mr Jack Daniel's whiskey bar yes oh I think it was yeah
because they did have a I think I think well there's a Jack Daniels restaurant okay sorry but but there was this
Whiskey Bar and so I'm waiting for them and then I see them I'm big fans you know so you got Steve
Joe and Devin and I'm just like you know you're you're kind of geeking out a little bit right but but you're friends
with them so it's weird because you're geeking out a little bit but uh they're then there's like herd of like women
come up and they're like hey can we get your picture so I'm like taking all these pictures why I have Steve yelling
at me saying Oh Mr popular you know and uh so that was kind of strange so then we went to uh to this Whiskey
Bar and the mind of Madness yeah yeah yeah yeah those uh is that a husband and wife husband and wife team
and that dude's got like a crazy awesome voice he's a great welcome to the minds
of Madness podcast well here well yeah he's got a great radio voice well he also has uh a lot of um engineering
experience so we were talking shop and it's like within seconds you're like this guy knows what the hell he's doing
uh so great for them their Show's taken off I'm trying to do some music for them
uh because they use like canned music so I'm trying to get some uh background noises for him but but right away it was
like hey nice to see you nice to meet you hey you want some whiskey sure so I get some whiskey and
but you know somebody hands you a shot of whiskey I don't know if you know sometimes I don't know if you're
supposed to drink it or if you're supposed to shoot it or okay and and sometimes I would shoot
whiskey I would sip bourbon yeah but whatever they gave me like I I shot it and it was I don't think you should be
shooting it so then I had like some ladies that want to like sit in my lap which was strange or maybe I sit on
their lap I'm not really for sure and then I snuck outside and then I and here's what happens at crime con so
most of the podcasters uh or most of the people in general that are at the convention they're they're very giving
of their time you know oh yeah so at The Whiskey Bar very approachable fun to talk to eager and willing to hang out
have a drink with you yeah I think my number one thing that I said to people is you want to take a picture
like not that I wanted to take the picture but I just thought like sometimes people are nervous to ask so
it's like ah come on just take a picture let's do this my favorite is when they say no yeah
I don't need I don't need your picture you want the ugly son you're gonna break my phone yeah yeah I can't this camera
is expensive uh so I go outside and then I'm I'm in this um I can't remember what
we're debating but it was you know some case and it seems like every I mean that
was the thing like you'd be drinking hanging out with people and then somebody would like stare deep into your
eyes and be like so what do you think about Stephen Avery that was like that but I like it because
I think it's a good uh it's it's good to see you know we're putting out shows and
we're putting out this information so it's kind of good to see one the feedback also but where other people
stand and what pieces of information on different cases that people find fascinating
um so that's why that's what I did uh on well the the funny thing was we had podcasts grow early on Friday morning
so my whole thing was I need to get to bed right well you and you had to get back to our hotel so in full disclosure
here we stayed at the resort for Friday Saturday night right but Thursday like I
said I'm a cheap bastard we stayed at a different hotel across town well the resort was filled up anyway right it was
not easy to get a hotel that weekend the Predators the Kick-Ass Nashville Predators had had a playoff game that
weekend as well so yeah which I mean so their whole town was and a bunch of different conventions happening at the
same time plus you got the grand old Grand old Opry and all that stuff so I have to head back and I'm like waiting
for my Uber and there's like this like this the convention center is so freaking big it's huge but like so like
I'm at this point where you're supposed to call a taxi like they have like this taxi Uber Loop
uh and then I run into some lovely ladies that were at crime con 2017. okay um beautiful girl I can't
I'm not gonna put her name out there for anybody but she was a little tipsy and she just had
this like joke that she came up with or this thought where like there's different ages
and at different ages your your trash so like I've managed to be trash for most of my ages well for whatever reason
she's like I'm 31 years old and I'm trash Oh really it extends that far no but it's like different ones so
like you know I'm 37 so then we're like well that might be a trashy age okay so I don't really know how she I don't know
I don't know what she's talking about but it sounds interesting yeah but so every time I'd see her I just go oh that
girl's trash and then she'd laugh and everybody would wonder why I'm calling this pretty girl you know trashy um
so very smart uh her friends were very smart and I think we talked about the haddon's I had case for like four hours
oh so like I left at like no I could have been four hours I was gonna say that's as long as the entire serial
first episode first season was that maybe two or three I'm joking it was it was a long time because I went outside I
was like I'm gonna get my gonna get an Uber and then I started talking to these ladies and I didn't want to push the
button because once you pushed the button the guy is heading there and they're real nice and and I was trying
to be friendly and and talking and then I just never pushed the button and then again it was like an hour and a half
later two hours later I was like okay that's it that's it I gotta go because my legs were like throbbing from
standing so much so so that was my uh but my point about that story is I went to The Whiskey Bar
uh you know got caught outside in a debate about a case not a debate but discussion about a
case and then waiting for my Uber getting into a two-hour long conversation about case so my point is
is that when you buy these tickets even if they uh are a little expensive for somebody you're gonna get a lot of value
out of this you might sit with one of your favorite podcast hosts and talk about a case for two hours be prepared
to be busy for about three days straight from the time you wake up to the time you go to bed and then like the captain
pointed out that that was Thursday night before the thing even started and there
was a bunch of uh True Crime podcasters hanging out and chatting and because most of them got to the resort I would
believe probably Thursday evening yeah would be my guess well then what then I wake up Friday and I go and I have to
get my passes and all that crap and I run into Tim and Lance from crawl space and also Missy Mara Murray and
they're hanging out with Maggie from the documentary so it was nice to meet her because I was a fan from the TV she's a
TV star she's a TV well yeah they put the beautiful people on TV um even though you know Tim and Lance
should be on TV more but art was not there was he there was not there I would have liked to have met playing hooky art
I did get the chance to meet Maggie that was nice um I did short here's here's this is a
funny thing and I don't know if you know this that I was walking from point A to point
B I don't remember where I was walking or why but at one point I look over and I'm not
inside of a restaurant like I said there's many restaurants and bars with inside this biosphere thing that is the
resort the the Gaylord Resort so I'm walking and I passed this this restaurant and I can see through the
restaurant window at a small table is none other than Maggie TV star what I wish I knew her last name James Renner
the author and the captain three of them sitting at this small little table having what looked to be a great that
was Jack Daniels and so I uh the Jack Daniels uh restaurant a thought popped in my head I
said I see three wonderful people having lunch should I go in there and say hi or
they're in the middle of a conversation I'll just continue on my way I want to say that was okay so first of all when I
run into Tim and Lance again big fans of them so I have to get over the initial like five minutes of being a fan of
somebody's work and also being friends with them right so it takes me a second and also on the documentary I had this
big question because during the docute series they show Maggie go-to uh Lance's house right
and it's this beautiful house like I'm like there is no way what you perceive to be Lance's Lance's home right which
so I got to the bottom of it you know it was a place that he was at now he's in a
new place so uh it wasn't a house he owned it would make me feel a bit better about my life
um but they actually put out I think they're going to put out a six-part series I'm not really for sure
but it seems like they're working on um you know the footage that they have of their investigation of the mara Murray
case they released like the first hour hour and a half and I went to that which was cool because Aurelia the girl that
helps us with uh Facebook and some different Social Media stuff she was there and she was the one that
introduced me to the case so to be able to watch it with her which was was is pretty cool and then they had a panel
afterwards but man like I told Brenner the documentary The the portion you got to see was fantastic
wasn't it it well yeah and it wasn't so much about it wasn't so much about the case as in
the behind the scenes of what you know podcasters do what document what people working on docs what they do and so I
thought that was just really fascinating it was just the first part and it's just
kind of a piece but I also thought it showed renners um humor because he is a funny guy
but okay here's what I want to say so I watched this doc and I get a message because you know I'm
friends with some of these people online so I get a message saying you know from
Maggie saying Hey do you what are you doing afterwards do you want to grab a bite T right okay
do I want to grab a bite to eat with their attractive intelligent woman of course
of course I do right now mind you she has a very cool boyfriend we've talked about that before so it's
you know it's just friendly but hey it doesn't hurt so I go and then Here Comes bastard James old
Jimmy Renner hey guys can I join ya it's like no you can't join us Renner go back
to Cleveland no no no here's the thing you have to let James Renner join you one because friend of the show our show
but two I think Renner was there all by himself all by his Lonesome like at least me and
you we got we got a co-host like we're there with somebody else well but we're not there with each other that's people
kept on going where's your co-host first thing everybody would say if anybody bumped into me the first thing they
would say is where's the captain and it's like and you don't know is were they hoping to
see the captain you know the captain and not me right no no or do they just together or do they just expect that we
are like we're just walking around joined at the hips yeah I mean if you saw like thinking sideways or you saw
Generation Y you saw most the other shows they would kind of be in their own little group I mean we just we're just a
little different I mean we see each other enough you know like we saw each other at all
the events like we don't have to like hey where are you going to eat you know um well yeah we would do podcasters bro
for about three hours a day together yeah and then have a little you know have some talks in between so yeah you
had an interesting job and then I had an interesting job where I traveled and so
we're kind of used to that and and I also think like we're in a band together I think you kind of get used to like
you're here together but you don't have to be connected to the hip and and I also don't mind just exploring stuff by
myself but well you and I like to we like a lot of the same things but we you and I one thing I've noticed is that we
both like to do things on our own timeline on our own itinerary kind of thing yeah where we probably would enjoy
doing all the same things just not in the same order not on the same day um you know when I'm in Nashville I want
to I want to drink some cold cold beers watching some kick-ass bands and I want to fill up on barbecue that's yeah but
right and that's my town takeover and I think the difference between me and you is you look at it and go well we're
going to Crime con so I will give them myself when I'm at crime con events and then
I'm also going to do some stuff for me and I I think that's a fair way to look at it and then for me it was just like
I'm only going to Nashville to do this crime con event right so that's and I've been to Nashville a bunch so
it's like not not that I don't like it I do like it but it's like I'm you know I don't
need to go to a you know see a live band or something so to me it was like when I
went there it was just I'm here I'm giving all my time of of these events because I think there was like a meet up
Friday night at the fuse bar which was a decent bar inside the biosphere thing uh inside the
resort and let's see you were there Bob Ruff was there uh Generation Y a bunch of the Dateline people were
there too but I don't think they were there they weren't there to be part of this Meetup where they just happened to
go there to have some drinks I'm guessing yeah I think so and what's his name Keith Morrison with his beautiful
hair Morrison uh Saturday night or was that Friday night so it's kind of the nice
thing about uh crime con is it it really does become a blur well so it is a big party
um at least you and I treated as as one big party but so we technically had a meet-up Friday night at fuse and I think
I think Saturday no no Saturday was at the weed and for the season the Whedon feeder what I
don't know what the [ __ ] place was called I kept calling it the weed eating scene regardless I did take some Flack
from a bunch of people on Saturday during the day they're like hey there was that big meet up last night at fuse
and uh everybody was there but you and I said no no no no what happened wasn't I was there I
didn't show I didn't bother to show up till 10 15. I went out honky Tonkin first went down to fuse afterwards and I
was there from about 10 10 15 to about one in the morning so I did do my time there met lots of people I do want to
bring this up though uh I met a group of ladies had ended up having a uh interesting
intelligent conversation with them but it didn't start off so intelligent so what happened was I was walking in there
and I do want to clear this up because I think um somebody posted this on our Facebook
or somewhere and it kind of rubbed me the wrong way so I do want to I want to defend myself here we'll never defend
ourselves on the show so I I I'm walking through fuse and I think I was going to
order a beer or something anyway somebody like grabs my shoulder grabs my arm probably a Michelob Ultra in shouts
hey Ryan Ferguson and I turned around and so if you if you read this on Facebook the way that this young lady
says that the interaction went down is like this she grabbed my arm and said hey Ryan
Ferguson I turn around and look at her and go hey F you which which would be awesome well it might be actually it
would be it would have been funny like I I think of it I mean going down that way
a funny way it would have been funny but the thing that I don't like about that is
our conversation was much different than that meaning that when when she's when she said that to me and I turned around
I think I said I'm not Ryan Ferguson and she looked at me goes oh yeah duh you're
not Ryan Ferguson and I looked at her and I said wait a second don't feel weird that's a great compliment that
dude's younger than me in better shape than me uh probably you know better looking than me tanner than me so
everything about us like very happy very happy to be mistaken for a one Ryan Ferguson but I wanted to be clear on
that because with me reacting saying Fu to her that that puts off it either I'm either I'm a real jerk or two that I
don't like Ryan Ferguson which I don't know much about Ryan Ferguson other than what I've seen on TV so yeah he was
there and that's how that thing went down I know a lot of people that met him he seemed like a nice guy I didn't
actually get to meet him I wanted to meet him because I was always fascinated with his case and just to you know I
mean it's just like when I saw Keith Morris it's like you just have to go shake his hand you know just to be like
yeah I've watched 100 shows of you narrating um well he's got the best voice in delivery of anybody on these crime shows
these days that's in my opinion yeah and um what's the other um rise up lights did you meet those girls
they kept on saying if you say rise up lights rise up lights but if you say it quickly it sounds like razor blades you
know and then like an Australian accent so you go like rise up lights right so what is that I don't understand
what that means or has anything to do with anything I don't know either I'm just saying that
I'm I met them twice well no we met them multiple times but I had a couple long conversations about different uh
uh just different cases but for whatever reason that came up and these things but
the but the reason why I bring that up is because so I'm hanging out with these beautiful girls and we're talking about
stuff and they're telling me to do this rise up lights and a couple of guys from Dateline were
like behind the girls kind of like making fun of me because there's like a herd of girls around me heard I don't
know if I heard that a real way to pluralize no I don't know a gaggle of girls you know what I'm saying there's
there's a some you know probably at least a grouping six to eight young ladies no and they're not like Google
gaga all over me they're not like drool hanging out of their mouth they're just like our show they want to talk to us
about you know talk to me about some cases and and the guys you know Keith Morris and everybody from Dateline is
sitting there like like kind of like oh look at you with all these girls around you you know uh but also kind of like
you know good work young young man um so a Friday a Friday was fuse and then Saturday was
Feed and Seed and you laugh feed it now to be fair we said we were going to be at feed and
seed for a couple hours right something like that possibly and you came and then you left
and then who do I hang out with crime I was probably at weed and feed for two hours
feeding scene I was there for the amount of time we said we would be there right
that's what I'm saying whatever we said we're going to be there the funny thing though it was um
what floor were we on there like the fourth fourth floor yeah yeah so I was on the first floor for quite some time
before I figured out that I was supposed to be well nobody nobody gave me any information on where to be no
yeah yeah uh and it was actually I actually I kind of accidentally stumbled on to our own event our own Meetup
because I went to the first floor and I was like ah the band's pretty good drinks are pretty good but it was very
crowded on the first floor and then I happened to look over and see a staircase and I was like oh I think I
watched for a minute oh people were going up there so I went up to the second floor
it was second floor was great but still a little crowded went up to the third floor there was nobody right like I mean
that's where we were supposed to be it was weird you get to the third floor and I think they were doing like um uh had
like a DJ with some dancing which I'm probably sure that about 11 o'clock at night that's the floor to be on but it
wasn't that late yet so I thought well [ __ ] there's nothing going on up here I'm gonna go to the top floor because
fresh air there's going to be a balcony open you know you had to fart they had a
ceiling bar or ceiling bar Rooftop Bar and uh I had a stealing you know who had a ceiling bar uh Lionel Richie had a
ceiling bar remember that they had a ceiling bar why the hell did does not everybody bar have a ceiling bar anyway
so I went up to the rooftop bar and immediately I saw other people that were supposed to be there and had a great
time meeting everybody you got a nice view of downtown Nashville from up there uh you could see their hockey arena and
what was cool about that event was because it was not at the resort that some people that were unable to attend
or just lived in the area showed up to that thing and uh we were able to meet lots of great listeners that way yeah
yeah [Music] okay you know me right I'm just a little a little strange and and um
and I think okay one of the great things about meeting any of the listeners to me
is that like you know again if if they listen to the show a bunch like At first there might be a little bit like oh man
this is kind of strange right but it's like they know a lot about you not tons about your purse your your personality
off the show or your personal life but they know enough about you or they have something to talk to you about it which
is crazy because like if you just met a stranger right yeah you'd be like what's
your name okay yeah what's your name and he might not the conversation might not
go anywhere right but when somebody's uh a listener of the show they can talk about a case right they
could bring up a case or hey you said this one thing in this episode blah blah and next thing you know it's like an
hour has gone by but I met I met this couple young couple no they're not a couple okay and um
big fans of the show like the dude was super excited that he was like getting to hang out and then like I find out
like he's with this very beautiful girl right but they're not boyfriend and girlfriend
so they're travel buddies yeah but they're like best friends right and but you know you get a good looking guy with
a good looking girl and you start going oh why aren't you guys dating what's going on here and so like
you know they probably wanted to talk about cases and I just kept I mean look now I'm at this point
because I did drink I might drink some beer but but at the Meetup I had a lot of people that wanted
to buy shots and so again look I just think if you don't know people buying shots you need to see where the drink is
coming from I had some friends uh that were there that could go get me a drink and and come back so I could kind of
just party and stuff but I had a bunch of mixed drinks and a bunch of shots so I was pretty drunk so then they got this
drunk captain grilling I'm about about the relationship like have you ever kissed
have you ever held hands have you I mean that is weird they're they probably went
they probably went from like I'm a big fan of the show to like they probably left like I've never
listen to that show again again the guy wanted but you know like sometimes when you're drunk and you just kind of get
fixated on something yeah yeah I mean that's kind of what happened because baseball or football
yeah but that conversation other than whatever happened have you guys ever tongue kissed have you ever has your
tongue never touched her tongue that's weird I'm putting that on you that's why they
answered all the questions and then uh and and I kept on running into uh Justin from which Justin's tall
both those guys are kind of tall the Generation Y guys Justin and Aaron but me and Justin were
oh I I can't speak for him is he taller than you because you're you're usually one of the
one of the if not the tallest guy in the room is very close but was funny was you
know I I wasn't drunk I was buzzed for sure I can't say he was but he brought up
this idea that we would do a show together and I don't know so he's like let's do a
show together and I was like okay and I thought you just meant like me and him that's not what he meant so what he
meant was uh like a Wife Swap like Generation Y and and post swap is what we've got no that's what I think
that's what he caught it Wife Swap maybe he's more strange than you yeah but he but he well yeah have you guys ever
tongue kissed have you ever touched have you ever wife swapped um so no he was saying
uh let's let's do this uh show swap I go Okay cool so we're gonna pick this case
or this is the idea anyways right that we're gonna pick a case and then so but I'm kind of the color commentary
and he's kind of the color commentary so the idea would be that like you know Justin would do a show with you that's
and I do a show with Aaron right that's the premises that the the premise that most people would assume I think right
but then Justin was like no no me and you should do a show together and and Nick and Aaron should do a show together
it's funny that it's weird that you and Justin had almost The Identical conversation that me and Aaron had
separately at another time where we kind of jokingly said the same thing well if
hey that's a great idea why don't me and you do it and then stick those two together and so I think
it's a great idea sounds sounds interesting we'll see if we can pull it off because like you said they're busy
we're busy but if we can agree on a case and uh come up with some good information maybe we'll make this happen
yeah so that was Saturday and then Sunday we had meetings the thing that was stupid was
they have these media uh these podcasts rows so early and out of all the people that are going to be the drinkers of the
group so I think one of them we had to be there at 9 30 or 9 o'clock nine A.M which is just kind of early for it's
well education well I'll tell you what it wasn't terrible it could have been worse but the uh would have been 6 30.
the thing that that made it rough was that our meetups were um you know they were evening time
evening hours or night time actually I should say and like you mentioned those things are not
short you can say hey I'm gonna just show up and see who's there and say hi but when you see who's there and say Hi
and then you get into conversations about cases you're meeting other people you're having a good time you're asking
questions about romantic relationships with two people you've never met before it ends up being it ends up being
midnight or one o'clock or later yeah it's pretty late then I the Uber and a lot of uber
this show is not sponsored by Uber but then so we do the meet up especially after this last did you see the crap
this last weekend the Uber um Uber driver fatally shot somebody oh that's awesome I don't remember what
state it was in but uh but you you you wonder what that person was doing it was well he he claims self-defense in in the
cops I think were suspicious of that self-defense Jazz well maybe one he's not supposed technically
per Uber's rules and regulations he's not supposed to have a firearm with him we shouldn't talk about it too much
because this is one of those things that you know I'm out at a bar Friday night and they're showing this on the TV with
no sound so I have little to no information other than the strange you know we keep talking about Uber and then
we have this weird case that happened this last weekend yeah so the the Sunday Meetup was I just remember
feeling a little rough and and we we took pictures and then they kept telling me that we have a
VIP meet up like all weekend they're texting me when is a good time to do who when you say
they crime you mean the people the organizers of the event yes so I guess what happens is that uh if you're a VIP
you're you basically could just like request that you gotta personal meet up with
you know a host of something and so I got these text messages when I first got there hey uh there's this
meetup group right VIP uh what day works for you and then it basically came out to be like I I
think I said I could do it Friday and we didn't do it I can do it Saturday we didn't do it and then I was like oh I'll
do it Sunday so we do the little meet and greet um then we say our goodbyes well
we say our goodbyes to everybody Bob Bob gave us a really nice hat for truth and
Justice and uh it was nice to see Devin because Devin's got married the following week follow-on week so it was
nice to see her before she got married and that's thinking sideways I don't know
why I feel like I have to say their name plus their show but uh you should so people know who we're talking about so
you're like I'm gonna hit the road right oh I hit the road and I'm I have to go to do this VIP
Meetup but I was really I really didn't understand why it was just me like it's like if they're going to do a
meet up you think they would want both of us right well yeah yeah so I go outside and
I meet some people from ah where were they from uh Minnesota no there's a lot of people
from Minnesota but uh [ __ ] apparently Minnesota the New Hampshire or something
but they because it but they gave us a lot of beer so they give us a ton of beer and so
because of our meet up my thought was I'm just gonna take my luggage to the Meetup spot and then I'm gonna go
to this VIP Meetup and then I'm going to hit the road go home well the problem was
that this these awesome uh friends hand me a ton of beer like a lot of beer like we had to get a
bag for the beer so now I'm carrying my my book bag my little uh luggage and I got all this beer and I go to this VIP
Meetup which then crimecon gives me like some other stuff that I now have to carry and then I get
to this Meetup really good looking it's gonna sound bad but very good looking lady uh she was
every person you've mentioned was good looking this this tells everybody out there something the people at crime con
The Beautiful People it the whole audience fantastic I saw there was scale one to ten everybody was at least a nine
or eleven like the most beautiful group I've ever seen well this was this lady was like six you know she was a six
sixes that's successful I thought you were gonna say she was a six she she was a six after everybody's a nine does she
kind of look like Cameron Diaz and I'm not like uh I've never been like oh my God Cameron Dia is so beautiful but she
kind of looked like Cameron Diaz and she's very sweet and I gave her one of the beers and and the funny thing was I
was like okay so why did you want to meet me you know like this is and she's basically like hey dumbass I didn't want
to meet you I wanted to meet your go like where's the other guy and I was like oh well he's on his way home and
then uh but uh in all fairness like you I mean you didn't outwardly say this so I do
have to say I didn't know I was supposed to attend no no no no it wasn't clear like it was
like they invited the captain and and what was even weird was we were doing our podcast row that morning and we you
and I had spoke I think the day before and we were like yeah man podcast row we we are so busy on Monday and Tuesday
it's a what a six hour drive roughly from Columbus to Nashville too long so once we did the podcast row I thought we
were going to kind of Burn Rubber and get out of town because we had to be back here in the studio in the garage
Monday morning and so the day before you were like yeah man let's we'll Convoy this thing home uh right after podcaster
row on Sunday and then the next day on my podcast row with you and you're like I have to do this thing yeah I told you
Saturday I got this thing okay and then I told you again Sunday but I I it's again it's not your fault
and and I had to explain it to this beautiful lady like hey I'm sorry he would have been here but they just
basically it wasn't good communication on their part like they should have said hey can
you guys because what they do just send you a text like hey uh can you come come to this thing yeah
what time works for you this time you know I'll just go do my thing and uh but the hotel was beautiful
uh the the restaurants and the place were amazing I had a this sandwich it's a hamburger that was I can't remember what
the place was called but is it Stacks or something like that and it was eggs burgers and I had it was great and then
the meal with James and um so back to the James and Maggie thing before I wrap up my part of this is we had a great
meal but it was awesome because at first I was like ah James go away mainly be just because I I had some
questions about the case that that maybe she could answer right right and and Maggie's really cool because she's very
open to just like we're friends and she listens to the show and there's times that we present a case and she's asking
questions uh through you know social media or whatever so I thought here's my chance to ask a couple questions
but it was cool to hear them talk about the behind the scenes and how the making
of the documentary and then like people's attitudes afterwards right so that was pretty interesting but
um so I meet with this girl and then I basically am choking myself to get to my car
and uh that I run into Tim and Lance again and I have to tell them hey I saw the
first part of your documentary it was awesome and they keep talking and talking and talking
and I'm like choking and I have all this stuff and I'm sweating really bad and but you know I'm a again it's kind of
like trying not to be a fan it was also like a hundred degrees that was really hot I don't know why there was like that
that Sunday because it had rained it was a weird mixture of it would rain for like a couple of hours and then it would
just be blazing hot afterwards you know and then it the cycle would continue and
I remember Sunday being extra extra warm that day extra extra warm oh uh so but then I head out
check out all that stuff I have a flat tire oh yeah I remember you telling me this
now now now here's all I can say so I drive this toaster right that's why I call it as a toaster and I
can afford a new car but I feel like this car has a little bit more life left in it and I should
just suck it up you're doing the responsibility this responsible thing but I keep having these situations and I
go out and it's like not completely flat it's like you could drive on it but it's
low not but flat it's not low it's FL it's flat it's concerningly low yeah so I had to drive and then fill it up with
air and then drive a little more and then stop and fill it up with air and I thought like the six hour six and a half
hour drive would do me some good because I was in the same place with you as far
as just like just being so stressed out about the show I mean there's so many emails and Social Media stuff and
everything was just kind of weighing me down and I thought oh this would be a really nice weekend to just like take a
break and so on one level you didn't get to take a break from crime because obviously it's a it's a crime convention
uh but it was rejuvenating to meet all these awesome people that listened to the show and it was like cool to like
meet people and they say like I got my dad listening to your show and you're like get halfway don't believe them
until their dad like runs around the corner and this there's this one guy that kept on going he's a piece of [ __ ]
oh yeah yeah he's using your line and the guy was great I don't remember his name he but he was like uh he's like you
got I loved it at him twice he's a piece of [ __ ] yeah babe cracked me up every
time he said it and um and so that was rejuvenating but I also thought that the drive would be nice to
put on some tunes and clear my head and just kind of you know veg out or whatever and
and um but with the flat tire that didn't help on the oil I was so happy to uh to get back home and like okay let's
just get back to work uh but uh hopefully soon we actually can take a vacation where it's actual vacation
there's no well I think we did it right in the sense that we went down there the
night before I think that's smart give you a day to get settled into the new city maybe check out something that's
not crime con related maybe you bump into somebody while you're out yeah maybe you tell somebody to
you know shut the f up because you're not Ryan Ferguson um I'm still telling you that's like the
greatest compliment I've had in the last two years of my life I'm I'm holding on
to that moment hey somebody told me once I looked that I could be Ryan Ferguson so
I think the only the thing that I would do differently this time around and it has nothing to do with the city it's
just having experienced the event itself I might even stay the night you know like if let's say it goes
Friday through Sunday which I imagine has always been the case so imagine that's what they're doing next year in
New Orleans so if the event starts early on Friday and then ends what would you say that it ended on Sunday I'm a little
unclear because our thing was kind of done around like early our thing was done around noon or maybe one and I left
after that but I think from talking with people that there were things going on until maybe 5 or 6 p.m on Sunday and I
think if I could do it over again I would have stayed Sunday night in Nashville as well I love Nashville I I
cannot tell you how much I'm looking forward to New Orleans next year yeah and and we jokingly I mean we just
haven't talked with the people from crime con yet but we we plan on doing that as long as they uh want to want us
to come back uh and the other thing I want to give a big anybody that works on the crime con team they they just did a
really good job of you know that this is their second one and they after the first one you know the first
one was great I had a lot of fun I met a lot of great people and I I remember on
Sunday they were asking for suggestions and saying what can we do better what did you like what did you not like and I
know that they stepped up their game for Crime con part two you know right so and then again on
Sunday people were going around saying hey this one I think was better than 2017.
and they were still asking for some suggestions so I I ca I can't wait till 2019 that it's going to be even better
well let me tell you this I want to point this out uh because one thing that we didn't give enough kudos to is crime
con for the presentations and events that they had I was lucky enough to be able to even with our busy schedule I
attended a few of them and I was very impressed with the with the presentations themselves and so it for
anybody that didn't make it or maybe you went you can't go to every single event
while you're there because there's multiple events happening all at the same time right if you Google
um Abby I'm sorry if you Google Delphi murders the family's speak it will bring up that video and you'll see the crime
con logo on the backdrop behind Abby and Libby's family and the sheriff as they talk about that particular case
I only I only mentioned to Google that one because after that you can also watch videos of other presentations and
you will see the crime con logo on the backdrops so maybe a little bit of a way to
to fully kind of check it out and to see what they have going on there in case you missed it this year to get you
ramped up for next year yeah we got a lot we got a lot of people that were talking so much [ __ ] because they were
going oh you guys just uh doing uh podcast row and that's all you're doing it's like
well we're not in charge we yeah we're not in charge for one but we did offer some
uh different suggestions on what you know we wanted to try to jump on that panel uh at one point I know that sword
and scale was invited to Crime con I know at one point with through sword and scale and through crime con we were
gonna be on their panel but once they backed out once the sword and scale backed out then we're not on
that panel so uh hopefully next year we do some kind of it would be fun I think to do some kind of
event I don't know what that event would be but even if it's just to get on a panel on a case I'm crossing my fingers
that will be invited back [Music] [Applause]
