In Massachusetts, two young women vanished just two years apart, and police would ultimately claim the cases were connected. But decades later, serious questions remain about whether the truth was ever fully uncovered.

On December 1, 1981, 25-year-old Joan Webster, a Harvard graduate student, disappeared after landing at Logan International Airport in Boston. Witnesses saw her retrieve her luggage and walk toward the taxi area, planning to return to campus in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Days later, her wallet and purse were found discarded in the marshes of Saugus, Massachusetts. Joan was gone.

Two years earlier, on August 13, 1979, 20-year-old Marie Iannuzzi was found dead in those same marshlands near Logan Airport, after last being seen leaving a wedding and stopping at a nearby bar in East Boston. Investigators determined she had been killed elsewhere and left there deliberately.

Police would eventually focus on one man, Leonard “Lenny” Paradiso, and argue he was responsible for both women’s deaths. He was convicted in Marie Iannuzzi’s case and later publicly accused of killing Joan Webster as well, even though he was never charged in Joan’s case and no physical evidence tied him to her disappearance.

In this episode, Ashley Flowers and Brit Prawat re-examine thousands of pages of court records, trial transcripts, sworn affidavits, and firsthand interviews, including accounts from family members who believe key evidence was overlooked and alternative suspects were never fully investigated.

More than 40 years later, Joan Webster’s murder remains unsolved, and the conviction in Marie Iannuzzi’s case continues to raise troubling questions about how justice was pursued.
