The Devastating Murder of 5-Year-Old Piqui Andressian | Killers Caught On Camera | Forensic Files

[Music] it just sounds like something bad is happening to her I heard her scream no
stop it I heard some gunshots that does not prove that I killed my wife we know what happened because the
video tells us what happened the camera doesn't lie this time on Killers caught on camera
in California a young boy goes missing while in the custody of his father and her interaction is really sad because
this is the last time she's going to see him and in the UK he's when you stopped it
Garden security camera captures the moment before a brutal murder we can see an individual crutching down it's got
linear form could be a weapon one of the neighbors heard screaming coming from next door a man shouting die die
[Music] foreign [Applause] California home to aramas andressian Junior a five-year-old boy known affectionately
as peaky his father is RMS andressian senior his mother Anna Estevez Anna had wanted a child all along she
had gone through medical procedures to try and conceive and piki was her pride and joy
foreign to her he was her only child [Music] she had a difficult time with pregnancies and this was her baby
Anna speaks about his love for cooking baking in particular he was such a happy child had a great childhood love to
learn and if you know Anna you know that Anna was a principal at an elementary school
so education is a big part of her life and she wanted to instill that in picky as well
eight years of marriage things turned sour and Anna filed for divorce Louis Aguilera is a homicide detective
for the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department we learned that the divorce proceedings
were quite contentious that both parties were making allegations against each other
and it was a smear campaign basically on both sides peaky's parents Anna and aramaz became
embroiled in a bitter custody battle Anna was concerned about how RMS senior treated piki she claimed he was
aggressive and yelled in their son's face despite these allegations the court ordered joint custody and granted each
parent seven consecutive days with their child on the condition that they handed
piki over on neutral turf so the initial order for visitation allowed peaky's father to take him for
an entire week and so Anna dropped off peaky at the police station made sure that his father took custody of him
RMS senior was planning to take piki to Disneyland so this video was given to us by Anna
and this was taken from her cell phone that she mounted on her dashboard to document the custody Exchange
Anna was so concerned about piki's Father's behavior that she decided to record all of their exchanges on camera
what's unusual to us is you see when she's hugging peaky and saying her goodbyes to
him ARA's pacing in the background seems fidgety and nervous and just weird the way he's acting
and you see the affection they have for each other and then look at him in the background
at this point peaky's whispering in her ear and talking to her he gives her a kiss you'll see him caress her hair he
whispered to her I don't want to go with him I want to stay with you Kiki's body language with his father is
in complete contrast his body and legs arching away seven days later on Saturday the 22nd of
April 2017. aramas senior and piki failed to turn up at the pre-arranged drop-off point in San Marino
Anna is in San Marino waiting for ARA to return peaky she finally contacts San Marino police department at 10 A.M and
says hey my son was supposed to be here a couple of hours ago and my ex-husband is an
answer in his phone he's not returning text messages he's a couple hours late and he's
violating the order here's his license plate they research it on their computer and they see that
his car had been towed by South Pasadena Police earlier that morning Craig hum is head of the major crimes
division in the LA County District Attorney's office well the peaky Anderson case first came
to my desk a couple of days after piggy disappeared so we were involved pretty much from the beginning peaky's
dad aramas senior had been found on the morning of Saturday the 22nd of April he was lying on the ground
unconscious in Arroyo Seco Park his father was found in a disheveled condition he claimed he didn't know what
happened to piki the jogger happened to see him at 6 30 in the morning and she called the police
so when South Pasadena police officers arrived that morning they found him passed out
you see ARA's car Aura was about 30 feet behind the car on a horse trail so they transport them
to the hospital not thinking anything of a missing child they talked to them further in the
hospital and he does say that I think I was assaulted I'm going through a divorce
and I think my ex-wife might have had something to do with it that's all he says he makes no mention
of his child at all so South Pasadena Police just tow his car they leave him at the hospital not
thinking anything of it Kiki's father claimed that he didn't know what had happened to peaky and so
the police treated it as perhaps some kind of abduction or that perhaps peaky had just wandered away when his father
was unconscious and so initially they treated it as potentially a missing person's case
when you have a missing person case the first thing you want to do is contact the relatives of that missing person to
get the Dynamics of the family relationship so we did a background investigation on the father right away
he had never been arrested he had a bachelor's degree from one of the local universities
he had never even been cited for a moving violation or a park in violation so he had a clear record reading into
his background it didn't lead me to any clues didn't make me think any different
other than his child's missing children cases are resolved very quickly and children also when they go missing
usually run away from home and either they come back or they're found it's usually an innocent situation that
people get very worried about very quickly understandably and the police take very seriously but of course in
this case there was this other factor which was the father and the lack of trust in the father and worry about what
he might do with the child foreign based on the fact that he had custody of his child
he didn't know the whereabouts of his child South Pasadena arrested him for child endangerment he was deemed to be
under the influence of drugs opioids and they arrested him for that as well after his arrest police questioned
piki's father our main goal more than anything in here is to find yourself and if you can give us any information
to help us find him that's what we're trying to do he's stuck to the story I think I was
assaulted I'm having this horrible divorce with my ex-wife she might have had something to do with
it I wanted to find from the beginning I was wanted always so you know it's been tough you know
because you know I all I just want is what is in the best interest of our 50 50. and that's why
and and it's like more and more it's just a continuous battle he continued to tell that story all
morning but RMS still couldn't tell the police where piki was no one knows what you're selling
something did you give him to somebody else RMS seniors physical appearance also
raised suspicion I noticed on his hands he had abrasions on the palms of his hands
[Music] no any you don't remember you don't remember digging around outside and it's not dirt you don't
remember did you have car problems or anything I I did not is that grease or you don't
know it's not Greece I mean if I I would love it if you guys take a sample so you
don't remember no [Music] we had his hands photographed as well and in the bedding of his fingernails
they were covered with dirt and the photos were quite significant because of the abrasions that he had
on the palms of his hands and some blistering as well the contents of aramaza's recovered car
began to paint a worrying picture there was a sonogram of piki that was propped up on the dashboard there was
also a full gas can and the car had been doused in gasoline on the inside and a rag was stuck in the gas cap
it looked like it was an apparent attempt to light the car on fire the LED lantern that stood out to me
that was still lit there's the sippy cup that we took as evidence and the jacket that had vomit
on it as well the police questioned aramas again to establish a timeline of events
from the moment he picked up piki to seven days later when he was found lying in Arroyo Seco Park
we wanted to get a statement from him and lock him into a story okay what did you do this past Thursday
we went to Disneyland I sent investigators out to follow up on that timeline but before we did that we made
the decision to release him from custody we didn't feel like a child endangerment
case was strong and he was more viable to us to be out of custody and maybe help us
with this investigation and locating this child plus we wanted to keep eyes on them
the police tracked aramas's every move and started to compare his testimony with the recordings
cameras in and video evidence were critical in this case they set a timeline for us
the first video was from Anna's dash cam on Saturday the 15th of April 2017. five days later aramaus was captured on
his own home surveillance camera served a search warrant at ARA's house and we located video from the house of
him leaving on Thursday afternoon prior to going to Disneyland we saw that he walked out of his house
to his car with the large Blue duffel bag and he also had a large gas container in
his hand neither one of those items have ever been recovered to this day we conducted DNA tests of the bathrooms
and didn't locate any evidence of any crime in the house but we did take a hard drive we discovered that the week
he had his son he created a will online and in that will he left everything to his mother and he left everything to his
sister including a hundred thousand dollars in cash he left nothing to his son which told us a lot
the next time peaky and his father were filmed was at Disneyland taken from the entrance at Disneyland
and you can see ARA picky up and carry him through the turnstiles and we found a video from Disneyland that we were
able to locate he was seen leaving Disneyland at about 1am ARA our next scene at an Arco Am Pm gas
station in Monterey Park and that's about two o'clock in the morning on Friday six hours later aramaz appeared on a
camera over 120 miles away at Lake kachuma an artificial Reservoir in Santa Barbara County
there's a booth at the entrance where people pay to get into the parking lot that was extremely useful because from
that video we could tell that peaky wasn't in the car there's a child seat in the back of the
car and that would be where piki would normally be seated and the car seat was empty
the fact that peaky couldn't be seen in the car told us that something had happened to peaky between the time that
he had left Disneyland with his father and the time that biki's father arrived at Lake kachuma
Lake Cachuma puma and made several visits to the local store which were caught on camera
so in this first still photo you see Aura arriving into the convenience store you buy some items
and which was a concern to us was that there was no peaky you see him leaving with no peeking
and then he enters the store a second time buys more miscellaneous items and there's no peaky again
police checked every piece of video footage against aramaz's testimony what they found was strong enough to Warrant
a search teams on Horseback with tracking dogs combed 30 square miles around Lake Cachuma
helicopters examined the area from above divers went into the water but there was
no trace of peaky meanwhile 400 miles away in Las Vegas aramas senior was becoming a cause for concern his father
refused to cooperate with the police any further refused to talk with them refused to tell them anything at all so
the police put Piggy's father under a physical surveillance and they also worked with us to obtain a wiretap so
that we could monitor any phone calls that piki's father was making to see if we could get any information from that
from the physical surveillance of Piggy's father from the phone calls it was clear that he had no interest in
looking for his son there was no even attempt to appear concerned about his his son's well-being and that was in
direct contrast with piki's Mother Anna who was still frantically trying to find
her son still going to the media asking for anybody's help in in finding her son
over the couple months that peaky was missing Aura not at one point called us asked us how our investigation was going
on he never took part in the searches for peaky he never questioned anything never spoke
with Anna Bridge obtained during the investigation showed arama's acting erratically
ARA was in Las Vegas going from casino to casino hotel to hotel having a good time he was using a lot of Narcotics
he was meeting women in hotels he was skydiving welcome to skydive Las Vegas how you
doing awesome awesome obviously you're feeling extra stupid today so I have to throw you out of a plate
because of that prior to him jumping out of the plane [Music] he mentions I love you buddy
I love you buddy that's what he referred to peakyas let's do it and he jumps out of the plane
so he's off having a good time not a care in the world his behavior just became more and more
inconsistent with that of a grieving father and it almost seemed like this was kind of his last hurray because he
knew that at some point in time this was all going to catch up with him foreign going to Vegas and gambling and
skydiving and engaging in just a series of high-risk behaviors is not a normal reaction to your child going missing it
is however a normal reaction to having Nothing Left to Lose before and as time went on aramaza's Behavior
became even more bizarre ARA is now changing his appearance and he's starting to mention to friends
that he might leave the country and he's starting to research countries that don't extradite and that became a
concern to us because now we're thinking he's going to flee and we'll never see him again
police couldn't risk aramas slipping their net he was arrested on a no body murder charge and taken back to LA
County detectives couldn't have predicted what happened next [Music] door struggle
and [Music] I guess I'm struggling and she would touch your brain what she said and then he said he
took his son down the hillside and that's why you haven't where he slipped and fell
that's why you have his nails covered in dirt and he said he sat his son along the
side of tree didn't bury him [Music] so to him it was more Honorable in his head
that he didn't bury his son and he Place him up against a tree the fact that he gave so much detail
about what he did during the commission of this crime to me just shows that it was almost certainly what sometimes
called like a flash ball memory so he probably has thought repeatedly about this incident it's basically traumatized
him whether he was doing this out of catharsis so to feel better or to make sure that the police have the whole
story this was a highly stressful highly emotional event that was strongly preserved in his memory and he is now
getting it out of his mind on the 30th of June 2017 71 days after piki was reported missing
police officers finally found peaky's body based on the description that piki's father gave to the police they were able
to find the location and they were able to locate piku's body which was not that
far off of the parking lot area propped against a tree just like his father had said and piki's body was dressed in the
pajamas that his father had described at the time that he confessed what we wanted to do was bring that
child some dignity that his father didn't and we placed him in a helicopter with one of our detectives and flew him
back to LA with that Detective RMS andressian senior was charged with first degree murder
initially he maintained his innocence but he changed his mind and decided to plead guilty in court on the 1st of
August 2017. at this time [Music] for the rest of your life just explain to you sir
he pled guilty because he didn't want to go through Court proceedings that were going to show what a bad
person he was he made it seem as though he pled guilty to help Anna to help the rest of the
family but in his narcissistic way he knew everything he had done after murdering that child including all
his Vegas trips and the partying and the drugs and the women were going to come out in court
and he didn't want any part of that are you feeling that the freely and voluntarily and because that is what you
want to do listen Okay quite exceptionally I find you guilty based on your plea detectives believe aramaza's motive was
to hurt his ex-wife murdering their child as an ultimate Act of Revenge taking piki to Dunn is a really
interesting facet of this case because it goes against the idea that he's dehumanizing his child because it sounds
like he might be trying to give his child the best last days of his life in which case he's entirely seeing him as a
child he actually is and yet he's then making the decision to then end his life so there's this
Discord going on between wanting the child to be happy and live a fulfilled life but then also taking that life away
entirely in some way Disneyland is like a Vegas for children and it's having that Reckless fun Euphoria before death
that maybe he was trying to offer his son that he perhaps was also trying to do to
himself oh [Music] I think he did it because he wanted to hurt Anna and he knew the only way to hurt Anna
was to take away the most important thing in her life and that was peaky this is the last time she's going to see
him it's the last time she's going to be able to touch him peaky meant the world to her
and he still does and he knew this and that was the ultimate pain he could cause was killing their child
despite the successful prosecution there are still many unanswered questions around aramaz's Behavior
did he mean to set that car on fire using that rag that was sticking out of the gas cap as an ignition point
since the entire car was doused in gasoline did he want to commit suicide without the cameras aramas may never
have been held accountable for piki's murder cameras are one of the most important
things to a homicide detective that exists they set a timeline for when the last time that peaky was seen alive
which was the video from when he left Disneyland at about one o'clock in the morning later on that morning at around
eight or nine o'clock in the morning PK was no longer with his father in the car
so it gave us a window of when piki was killed it also gave us an indication of where the crime actually occurred
foreign was comprehensively caught on camera he was given a sentence of 25 years to
life in prison it really sticks with you on the death of children and then the fact that a
child is murdered by their parent is just something that never goes away and it it never ceases to amaze me what what
people will do to their own children I've had over 350 homicide cases and this is the only funeral I've ever
attended it was uh really somber I'll never forget it surveillance cameras were crucial in
solving the piki andressian case all around the world CCTV has become almost omnipresent
home surveillance and doorbell cameras in particular have become a global billion dollar industry
the UK the covet pandemic and the increase in home deliveries created a huge demand for doorbell cameras
the doorbell cameras for home security for that specific address for a property owner to be able to see who was
approaching their frontal rear of their property you could see if somebody was delivering
Parcels for example evidence for the police in the murder of Stephen and Jennifer
Chapel the investigation team will actively seek if there are any doorbell cameras
within the area that may have you know captured the incidents itself or the offenders movements
in the southwest of England in the county of Somerset lies the small village of Norton fitzwarren home to
just over 3 000 people including married couple Stephen and Jennifer Chapel Jennifer and Steven lived in a small
housing estate where everyone knew each other Jennifer Chapel worked in the local Garden Center Cafe and her husband
Stephen was a teacher they were very much in love and they had two young children and they were friendly
approachable people that were they were liked by almost everyone Stephen and Jennifer lived next door to
Colin and Kaylee Reeves the Raves family and the Chapels were friends I during lockdown they texted
each other checking in on each other making sure everyone was okay I believe that Mrs chapel and Mrs Reeves shared
the school van because they had children of a similar age and then it all sort of
changed tensions escalated between the two families over the parking spaces directly outside their homes
this minor annoyance was growing into a daily obsession Mrs Chapel had bought a second car and
she used to park it on the road at the bottom of the Reeves's parking space and this didn't exactly obstruct at the
Raves as parking space but it made it more difficult for Colin Reeves to reverse in and out of his space
Colin Reeves confronted Jennifer the exchange was captured on her doorbell camera
here Emmy Polito is a forensic video analyst and an expert witness in criminal cases
in the UK the sound in this clip is particularly important the actual camera has got a microphone
as well that will switch on and off depending on how loud the conversation is spotlight
okay when a Colin is close to the camera we can clearly hear what he's saying to
Jennifer this vehicle we're seeing here belongs to Jennifer this is the vehicle that is that is causing upset to him
[Music] well but the situation intensified Steven chapwell Jennifer's husband was
maneuvering out of his parking space and he accidentally bumped Colin Reeves's car so that kind of changed the
relationship a bit after that they weren't quite as friendly the relationship deteriorated further
over arguments about the Chapel's cat and other Petty disagreements there was then quite a tense exchange of
swear words between Colin Reeves and Mrs Chapel he's the one who started we can identify Jennifer here and we
know from recognizing the voice and from previous recordings that that's Colin for the police this is essential because
it kind of proves that the relationship between them is deteriorating rapidly and is therefore at this point where
potentially something violent and Sinister could start working in Collins head we can all relate to being in a dispute
with a neighbor because whether it's noise or someone parking in your spot or the person next door gardening too often
these are invasions of your sense of space and your sense of Sanity sometimes and I think that compounding of even
trivial tiny things over and over and over and over again is like pushing into a wound and at some point it can feel
like the only way to deal with it is to take dramatic action the tensions extended beyond the front
door Colin Raves had gone to the garden center with Mrs Chapel worked and she said that he was serenade apparently he
went there twice Jennifer Chapel definitely felt intimidated by his presence and
definitely felt like he had gone there to scare her or to make her feel uneasy Colin Reeves was an Army veteran
it was part of the royal engineers and in 2008 then he went to Afghanistan where he was stationed at Camp Bastion
in his role with the Royal engineers and also on the prisoner of war of camp when Colin returned from Duty his
experience of War had an impact on him it affected his work and his relationship he was a different Colin he
had completely changed he was withdrawn relations between Colin and Kelly started to break down Colin Reeves did
turned a drink and when he was drunk he was abusive to his wife clearly Collins experiences in the Army had also
led him to develop a fear of camera surveillance which affected his civilian job as a truck driver
he felt like he was always on camera because there were cameras watching him in the Lorry and he became more and more
depressed and withdrawn on the 21st of November 2020 Colin went to Taunton with his mother and children
to see the Christmas lights being switched on I live with areas surrounded by crides
and his mum said that she could see he felt very uneasy being in such a crowded place after lockdown he also saw the War
Memorial in Taunton and Colin Reeves said that this reminded him of Remembrance Day which was always a
difficult time for him when Colin got home he put the kids to bed it had already been a tough day then
his wife Kaylee asked for a trial separation following math then Colin went and sat
on the stairs and he said he cried just 40 minutes later a man was captured on Stephen and Jennifer Chapel's Garden
camera we can see an individual crutching down the suspect was trying absolutely
everything not to be detected by the Light because the footage is an infrared and
because of the angle of you we can't identify this person at this stage but what we can see
it's some black tonalities on the right forearm which might indicate a tattoo but it's got a linear form which is
extending from the hand potentially could be a weapon this tiny detail uncovered in the
footage was about to become hugely significant one of the Chapel's neighbors watching
TV with his partner when he heard screaming coming from next door and he heard a man shouting die die
we can see the cat running away from the scene could indicate that there's something
inside the property that the cat is obviously scared about a similar figure leaves the house with
completely different body language the suspect is not crouching or sneaking anymore potentially this could indicate
that he has got no more people to worry about hearing him or seeing him moments later a 999 call is made
to the police what's the location of your emergency husband and the mother oh okay and you're safe at the moment
yes right have you got any injuries whereabouts have you been stabbed no not me the neighbors the neighbors
been stabbed by who hi mate by you yes right okay what's your name Colin Reeves all right call
them tell me exactly what's happened take a deep breath we have a first admission of guilds from
the caller the emergency calls are very important pieces of evidence the operator is not
only providing a support and help but is also Gathering uh information about what
has happened which is being recorded I went out yeah with a knife okay um I've stabbed both of them all right how
many times I don't know a couple times each not two or three times each maybe are they still conscious and breathing I
don't think so no okay pollen signed a pretty weapon for a man who just stabbed his neighbors he was able to answer all
the questions asked of him by the call Handler all right what kind of knife did you use
favorite soccer okay the famous voice that we heard in the background is the caller's wife
all right Colin just down the line to meet you okay we're gonna get some help out there
so you stabbed them both several times yes you've done the right thing by calling us okay
next door at the Chapel's house the neighbors were first on the scene after they'd heard the screaming from Mr
Mrs Chapel's house they went into the Chapel's house where they find them lying on the floor in a pool of blood
they checked the Chapels for a pulse and could find none Steven and Jennifer's two young children
were asleep upstairs the police arrived ready to arrest Colin at first Colin raises Father Brian came
out of the house and they thought that he was Colin Reeves the man that they were supposed to be arresting put your
hands up right him yeah go in put your arms up listen you're under arrest at the minute
and the attempted murder of two people inside the address next door do you understand
so you can see bloody One camera on this officer he gives us a visual of the defendant we can see his tattoos the
same clothing let's walk over here a minute can't we Colin had already confessed to the
double murder but in the police interview it was as if he was still in the Army on active duty
still my job confused to I am here I was in an operation in another police interview Colin
refused to answer questions how were you involved in their deaths in court Colin pled guilty to
manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility his defense argued that the security
light in the garden triggered his post-traumatic stress disorder which led him to kill Stephen and Jennifer Chapel
we can clearly see ill intention possibly a weapon being held we can kind of discern that was already there to
commit a crime or to cause some serious hurt things like lights including white lights can trigger flashbacks which are
one of the main symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder so that piece of it is reasonable
but then saying that that caused him to kill his neighbors is nonsense people with post-traumatic stress disorder
aren't Justified to kill people and they don't typically go on to harm anybody so
that that's a huge leap from what is a likely trigger for a flashback whether or not it actually triggered a flashback
I don't know but even if it did that is no excuse to then go and murder people in court the details of what actually
happened on the night of the 21st of November were revealed Colin Reeves went to his military plaque
on the wall and this was a framed or an event that he was given when he left the
RMA and it had a ceremonial dagger which was traditionally given the soldiers you
know when they were decommissioned when Colin Reeves went into the Chapel's living room he was met by Steven Chapel
at the door they stabbed him at least six times some of the ones were up to 21 centimeters
deep Steven Chapel then stumbled a couple of steps forward and fell near the door
Colin Reeves then went over to the sofa where Jennifer Chapel was sitting and he
stabbed her six times as well and she then slumped forward onto the floor and that's that's where she died when I
spoke to the place Colin Rave said that he'd stop Mr Mrs Chapel a couple of times eight but in fact it had been
quite a sustained and bloody attack a jury found Colin Reeves guilty of murder he was sentenced to a minimum term of 38
years in prison in one very big research study on British soldiers researchers found that
soldiers especially those who returned from active duty so who were in combat they are three times more likely to be
convicted of violent offenses and if we're looking at numbers one in five so just over 20 percent of people
who return under the age of 30 are convicted of a vile defense which is astronomical
the numbers are so high partly because in military training you're taught that violence is a conflict resolution tool
that that ends your disputes second there's often an aggrandizement of aggression so it's valued it's seen as a
positive trait to be aggressive and stand your ground I'm absolutely not saying that everyone who is in combat or
is part of the military and comes home that they are a danger to society we need to be really careful not to be
leaning into the hero to zero narrative because that can be really stigmatizing also for individuals
themselves instead what we should be looking at is making sure that support that transition is effectively supported
so that we don't have these kinds of outcomes I think the motor of Stephen and Jennifer Chapel is quite an unnerving
one because Colin Raves probably had nothing more than depression and anxiety like a lot of
people but that combined with the dispute over the parking caused them to just snap one day it doesn't make any
sense what he did and like his children have no father because he's in prison and the Chapel's Sons or orphans
foreign [Music]
