This was one of the last times 32-year-old Alex Pennig was seen alive. Video shows her and her friend,
44year-old Matthew Ecker, arriving at Penn's apartment after leaving a bar in St. Paul, Minnesota. Matthew and Alex
walked out of view as they went up to her apartment. But a short while later, they walked back through the lobby and
out the door. Matthew said it was to get his headphones from his car. Alex returned to the lobby and waited
for Matthew. For the detectives, what happened next was key. >> She seems impatient, just looking at her
body language. >> They noted how when Matthew returned, Alex didn't hold the door for him and
how he shrugged his shoulders as he followed behind her. Detectives wondered if Matthew and Alex had gotten into a
fight. >> Something was going on with him. That's huge because that's the last time we see
Alex alive. [Music] >> 20 minutes later at 2:50 a.m. Matthew called 911. >> A girl who shot herself.
>> Matthew claimed Alex had shot herself, but detectives wondered if a conflict between them had led to murder. The
lobby security footage had no audio, so there was no way to know for sure if the
two had gotten into a fight. But Alex's family and friends shared their thoughts.
>> You could tell that she was mad. You could tell the way she ripped open that door. You could tell Alex stomping on
stomping in. >> Whenever she was mad, she'd like stop and she I was visible in this video. So,
they were definitely in a fight. >> But when detectives questioned Matthew, he denied any problems.
>> We were laughing. We Everything was fine. >> You guys weren't arguing anything.
There's a whole fight with you two. >> No. >> And Matthew's family believes there
could be a different reason for the change in Alex's demeanor. In the footage, Alex is on her phone. They
wonder if she was messaging her boyfriend Shane. They believe she was arguing with him earlier in the day and
suspect she was still upset with him. I truly believe there's a lot of information, a lot of texting, and we
think having gotten those interactions would have given us a lot more insight into her state of mind.
>> But detectives couldn't get into Alex's phone because no one knew the passcode.
And Shane said he had lost his phone the night before, so they couldn't search his either.
>> It seemed that there was some kind of exchange happening. Was she talking to you at all?
>> I didn't have a phone, so Facebook message or anything like that? >> Uh, no. >> Detectives weren't able to know for sure
what was really happening in the lobby, but it gave them a crucial glimpse into Alex Penn's final moments. Police
officers arrived on scene shortly after Matthew made that 911 call. Detectives then had to find out what happened
between this and the moment the gun went off. [Music]
