his death has been shrouded in mystery ever since the London coroner issued an open verdict we went to London to talk
to his friends about his final hours I don't think the people around him by then were confident in
anywh I think it was it could be a conspiracy of neglect I don't think it's a coincidence that Hendrick had to leave
the United States to go to England to become an established star I just don't think we were ready for somebody as
powerful as he was when he got to the hospital the doctors failed to treat him and were asking
questions on on a racial theme what are you doing with him and black and white and all this and they didn't get on with
resuscitating him and they could have saved him but they didn't he did definitely not like some people was
saying committed suicide because there were all together 40 uh prescribed sleeping tablets in the flat at that
time and he would have taken much more if he wanted to commit suicide plus the fact is he was somebody who believed
that uh he was a very spiritual person as well and he believed to commit suicide was a sin it would be nice to
know what actually happened to my friend [Music] [Music] what you need to know is that it's
1967 you're young and you're probably into the Beetles you're probably into the stones and you certainly think you know
what hip is and you don't even mind being called a freak and then jimmi Hendrick shows up
and you really find out what freaky is about Chaz Chandler brought Henrick to London
and introduced him around met him at a club called the the cafe War Greenwich Village he was
playing with a pickup band he just met them that afternoon I was had arrived in New York about a week prior to the last
two or I was going to do I was the in them days I was the Bas player in the group called The Animals I met Jimmy a
week before that tour started I arranged to beet at the end of the tour cuz I was
leaving the band and taking back to England with me which I subsequently did why' you take him I just thought it was
the best thing i' ever seen being instrument but just zap you know was strange I used
to go out with a girl in New York in them days and the night before I met Jimmy she'd played me a track at her
flat uh and I thought myself well when the when I leave the animals I'm going back to England I'm going to find an
artist to record this song with cuz I I think I love this song it had been out about 9 month in America it had got
nowhere and that was a song called here jaw by an artist called Tim Rose and the
next day when I met Jimmy at the cafe wall the first song he played was Hew it was like you know it was like you know
hey this there's something fate about this this gu I've just got to take this guy back to
England uh I went off did the tour I was way about 2 month came back in New York
picked him up and we flew to England you discovered him I think he knew where he was I don't
think he had to be discovered but he knew where he was but I hope find an audience for him one of ch's friends is
Eric Clapton well the first time Jimmy ever met Eric was the cream had just formed at that time they said well bring
him down you know halfway through the set they introduced Jimmy to come on stage he walked on the stage started
playing Killing Floor and I I looked and I just saw Eric Hans just drop off the guitar he's
standing at the back and he saw like a look of shock on his face he put the guitar down went off the stage and I ran
backstage cuz I thought is he all right you know and he was standing in the dressing room and his hands were shaking
and he was trying to light a cigarette and he just said is he really that good or is that the only song he can play us
is he's really that good Eric you know it's a pretty amazing the graffiti in London in those
days uh was that Eric is God referring to Clapton who at that point was for all practical purposes the best guitar
player in the world and um he saw Jimmy and knew that he'd have to back that up from now on no
one could take it for granted and he just took the place by storm by the time he got here people
thought he was an English band it's no coincidence he had to start on that side and come this way become part of the
British Invasion from that moment on Jimmy Hendricks was a legend in London not to the public yet but to other
guitar players people like Keith Richards Jeff Beck and the Beatles who would come to hear him play I don't
think it's a coincidence that Hendricks had to leave the United States to go to England to become an established star I
just don't think we were ready for somebody as powerful as he was coming out of a place as unlikely as the
Pacific Northwest besides if you were a gunfighter in the 1880s you went to Tombstone you went to dodge
cuz that's where the other great gunfighters were and I don't know whether HRI was thinking about this or
not but in terms of guitar players London was where you had to go to confront the best guys in the world Chaz
Chandler hired bass player Noel reading and drummer Mitch Mitchell to form the Jimmy Hendrick experience Noel had been
around the London music scene since the beginning see that place up there that's
the where the stones actually first um rehearsed I'd say in about 1962 or something you know I first met Jimmy in
October sorry September 1966 I went for an audition for another band and I was asked if I could play bass and I hadn't
played bass at that point i' maybe touched the bass guitar and um I said I'd give it a go and I played um three
Tunes with uh Jimmy and he asked me we went down the pub as most people do in London and he said we talked about
music he asked me all about the English music scene at that point I asked him about the American Music Scene and um he
asked me to join his group and what happened we then um auditioned like a couple of different drummers and we met
up with Mitch and then um we got together with Mitch myself and Jimmy and within about 2 weeks we're on tour in
France with Johnny hallay who had be in those days classified as the Elvis presy
of France and um this is October 66 then we started playing clubs in London same
time recording and um in November 66 we went to Germany to a club played there for 5 days and then
came back and we're doing more clubs in London and then we had our first television show in December ' 66 and
then the first week in January we released our first single Hey Joe and um within
about I think it was a couple of three weeks it was in the charts so we were suddenly popular it's very
quick Hey Joe was an instant hid in England overnight they were members of the club in London it's like the
original PB the shrip PB Street which like all the musicians used to come in before like the Marquee like Keith
Moon John enst or Peter town and Jimmy Hendricks Mitch Mitchell you'd see like Keith richers in it you know all down
the end having a few points be like young ladies who'd come here Etc we all about 21 in those days you
know tell you how Jimmy was and I don't think people much appreciate it was you got to remember Elvis's great crime his
great sin as it were was that he was a white kid acting black well Jimmy wasn't acting
anything Jimmy brought the twin forces of sex and race and shoved it right in people's faces was something to
see Jimmy Hendricks and his band were now stars in England and on the continent but they were unknown in
America it was the summer of 1966 7 pre- Woodstock Rock promoters had a brand new
idea to Stage a giant outdoor music festival with a lot of bands Jimmy Hendricks only got on the bill at
montere when Paul McCartney insisted Jimmy was overtly sexual the guitars on fire the uh oral sex with his uh with
his strings all of that intended to drive home the message that that um this guy wasn't fooling around this was the
real deal there was a huge argument about who had go on First and town was sort of like talking to Hendrick and we
were just saying we don't care who goes on first but that was a bit of a boost as well because it I'd say it's pretty
hard for anyone to go on after The Who and the who had been in America before the experience so it was always with the
English bands cuz we considered ourselves an English band that whoever had been to America before had the
Advantage you know what I mean but um that I'd say made the band in America but it was like watching what happened
in England all over again because people this guy just walked out he was like nothing anybody ever seen before you
know and it took like it the people would be halfway through the number through his first number then they'
suddenly realize we should like this guy would be this sort of stunned what it was great it was great to see it
happening in one night the jimmi Hendrick experience had taken in America by storm for the rest of his life for 2
and 1 half more years Hendrick's existence was a blur of LSD recording studios and concert dates days off were
precious was is like uh history I suppose 1968 palmanova in newor Spain hendricksville on holiday and we never
sort of thought that um well I never thought that I'd be looking at something like this now you
know people tell me were all legends I just wanted to play well and be appreciated but they were Legends all
over the world when Hendrick played the star spangle Banner at Woodstock four months before he died there wasn't a
guitar player in the world who thought he could touch him he was by far away the best guitar player the world's ever
seen in my book it wasn't just the stuff he played it was his sheer breadth of ability the
he he was stunningly original he didn't start to change until 68 in the spring and
uh I suppose you call it you got a Star Complex you know basically and we were playing sort of bigger gigs now 20,000
or 30,000 people and HRI like if if the amp wasn't right he'd react badly to the
audience and then after of the gig i' perhaps say to him that we're supposed to be professional mate like uh you
don't need to do that we're supposed to do our job if the amp crackles let it crackle you know if you break a string
carry on like that's the professional way but um he changed then how bad did it get
um in the summer of 68 it started to get a little bit worse and um we all threatened to leave a couple of
times um but then we did another big European stint in the late 68 and we were back in
America in I think at the end of 68 again I'm not sure but that's when we basically
realized that the band had got to its um level and we basically decided between us that um we'd all call it a
day Jimmy Hendrick died in 197 he spent the night with a blonde German groupy named Monica Daman in her Hotel
Apartment in London he'd met Monica in Dorf on a gig one of hundreds of groupies that surrounded the band but
Monica says she was different that Jimmy was going to marry her Hendrick jammed at a bar in SoHo on the last night of
his life and went to a party afterwards at some point in the night he probably dropped acid but that didn't kill him it
was the nine sleeping pills that belonged to Monica that killed kill Jimmy Hendrick he was
27 in the night uh he wanted to take two sleeping tablets because he was very awake and he wanted to go to sleep
because he had a very heavy schedule the next morning the next day uh but he didn't take at that time to sleeping tet
and I remember I fell asleep about uh quarter 7 in the morning but he was still very awake and he was still
talking to me when I fell asleep so I can just think that he must after I started to sleep he must have taken some
sleeping tablets maybe to and maybe they didn't work as quickly as he thought they should have worked and he took more
alog together uh he took nine sleeping tablets I think there might have been a conspiracy a cover up I think that what
happened or it's possible that um people were down there earlier in the morning um possibly
before an ambulance was called if Eric burden's account is to be believed and Jerry stickles Jimmy's Road
manager said that he received a phone call between half 8 and 9:00 in the morning saying go and check Jimmy out he
assumed Jimmy was at his hotel and went to the cumland hotel after that he went to the samakan hotel after that he
becomes rather vague Terry Slater in a telephone conversation with me two years ago told me that that uh he was down
there that morning and that the place was a terrible mess and there wasn't no sign of any food in the cupboards and
that Jimmy was lying on the bed knackered ODed he died through a Suffocation of his own
vomit what happened was in the morning I woke up and he was still fast asleep just normally asleep I went to get some
cigarettes when I came back and I looked at him after a while I saw that there was something dribbling out of his mouth
and I realized something was wrong I tried to wake him I couldn't wake him so I wanted to get his doctor and I knew
the name of the doctor but didn't know the address so I called alvinia Bridges uh associate of mine and but she
couldn't help me but said I should get the ambulance uh car which I did get and they came checked him looked at his
piles his heart and everything and said he will be fine in the after we would be
just walking out laughing about the whole situation then Eric burden told me that he got there when the ambulance was
pulling away and that he was delayed and he'd sent his girlfriend alvinia on ahead which means that if that's true
then alvinia had to been down there before the ambulance arrived because if he arrived Eric
arrived when the ambulance was pulling away then alvinia who got there before him must have been down there but on
close questioning he then said well I thought I saw him that morning but I couldn't look because of the
mess and we went to the hospital and uh now also the ambulance man clearly state that jby was still alive when we
arrived at the hospital and uh I called in alvenia bridges to come and uh in the meantime I
was waiting and when alvinia came a sister came and she said Jimmy's heart had stopped but it was going all right
again and not to worry and uh after a while another sister came and she said that Jimmy had
passed away and a doctor told me later that something got stuck in his air pipe what
could have happened is that Jimmy was unconscious and Monica couldn't wake him up and that uh she called in help and
waited for them to come when they came they realized that he was you know dangerously ill and then they called an
ambulance so the delay might have been the time it took alvinia to get to uh Monica's flat and you know I've heard
all sorts of tales about what went down that night but you can't you can't turn around and say it's this person's fault
or that person's fault I mean people were doing drugs in them days and those immense parent oer around it I mean
people have being busted by the law careers were being ruined all the time uh I won't go into any stories I've
heard cuz it's all he say anyhow uh all our say like was it was a terrible unfortunate
thing I I just wish he were still alive you know but I also want to point out he
did definitely not like some people was saying committed suicide because there were allog together 40 uh prescribed
sleeping tablets in the flat at that time and he would have taken much more if he wanted to commit suicide plus the
fact is he was somebody who believed that uh he was a very spiritual person as well and he believed to commit
suicide was a sin it came such a shock he he came to our flat on the on a Wednesday night I didn't even know he
was in England at the time sat talked and he said how he he hadn't really been satisfied with what he'd been doing in
the studio for the the last year since we parted company and uh he wanted to start working for us to start working
together again we made arrangements I I had already arranged for that weekend I was going up to Newcastle my hometown
see the family and all the rest of it and he was going to fly off to New York pick up all the tapes he'd worked on
bring it back to England we were going to go over the stuff that was in the can and then start forming it or
re-recording or recording new stuff to do another album that was on the Wednesday night he left
the flat about 3:00 in the morning he'd sat with my little boy was just a few month old on his neighb would just
talked and talked about it was just like the old days again pre-planning an album
before you went in the studio uh I left very early on the Friday morning by train to Newcastle
when I got off the train at the other end my father was standing on the station this something my father had
never ever done met me off a train before and I went well you know why here what you're doing here he says
well the press know you're found out you're on this train and they want I thought I better meet you off the the
train so it can go out the side door I says well what you talk what the hell the Press want to meet me for he says
don't you know I says what he says Jimmy's dead and that's how I heard I just sat there stood there I was just
stunned You Know It uh you I just think mentally paralyzed for a year you know it was
terrible uh jimmi Hendrick's first girlfriend in London was Kathy etchingham she was with
him the whole three years of his stardom I met him the first day he arrived in England in September
1966 when Chaz Chandler brought him over over and um he took him around to Zoot and Ronnie
money's house in Fulham and Zoot and Ronnie money had an apartment underneath mine and in the basement lived Andy
Summers and and a drama called Colin Colin white uh she came upstairs and said oh
Chaz has just brought this guy this american guy uh around he looks like the Wild Man of Borneo and I was in bed and
said well I can't be bothered to get up and she said well they're going down to the scotch later we'll go down then fine
said I and um that's what we did we went down later on and as we walked in Jimmy
was actually playing in the corner and the whole room was at a standstill they just you know
hushed and I saw Chaz who waved and uh Ronnie myself and Angela buron um although she wasn't married to Eric
Burton then Angie King walked towards where they were sitting and sat down Jimmy played about one
more uh number and then came and joined us no reading and the people who knew Jimmy Henrick best say he was a
completely different person in private than the wild man who smashed guitars and amps and set fire to his instruments
on stage Noel leted us into the private world with his old home movies of Hendrick and the band at play it was a
very nice shy polite guy um had this sort of wild man image but but that's when he played but apart from
that he'd be the sort of guy who would um if someone comes into the room he'd stand up and open the door let him sit
down take their coat be very quiet very polite oh look at that who's that that's
a young lady from Sweden called uh what's her name Bella I think I can remember her name who's that with her
that's [Music] me that's Jerry the road manager that's a publicist Keith Oram that's me again
being photographed by me it's the lady from Sweden it's Mitch Mitchell how are you photographing yourself I was holding
the camera like that ER now I think we're back on airplane I'd say a lot of the stuff I took was on
airplanes cuz we were on airplanes most of the time actually why did the other uh guitar players come to hear Hendricks
I suppose he was different you know he was American and uh he was really good he
was really good you know why were there always girls around well I think we attracted them
for some reason it could have been our hair or our clothes I don't know it's so but there was a lot of women around
especially in America and they were very friendly I must toit I was very young I was very
impressed the first time I went to America I was 21 and our first gig was Monterey Pop I think there's about
50,000 people there that night and it sort of pretty scary but uh we were sort of like into the act by then and we just
went out and did our 40 minutes or 35 minutes and put our best into it and that made the band in America i' say it was
amazing completely amazing well we had to get off the stage quick because everyone was sort of
freaking out but um the reaction was just they were still sort of cheering maybe 10 15 minutes after we stopped
playing like in those days was pretty good you know and and know there was no on calls done we couldn't do an on call
Cuz Hendrick had burnt his guitar so we never sort of really sort of looked at each other after a gig you
know we'd discuss it later but we didn't need to discuss this one because we sort
of realized that we'd um arrived in America we never sort of thought that um well I never thought that I'd be looking
at something like this now you know you ever think it would end this way not really no not at all
no but um it's like I've got this stuff though nobody else has got this after our lifestyle I think um we're quite
lucky to be here a lot of friends are know aren't here now so who well Jimmy number one and a lot of other people
Janice Joplin the usual people but there's a lot more musicians who are no longer
here and uh I'm lucky I'm here I think n reading is one of many people who's not
satisfied with the police explanation of henrik's death the coroner's inquest in
1970 found that he died of inhalation of vomits due to um bitrate intoxication and we all accepted that and nothing was
said and then later on I started reading biographies and and things were brought
to my attention where it had been said that Jimmy was sat up on the ambulance and that he would been perfectly all
right apart from the fact that he was unconscious he he was breathing normally and he had a normal pulse but that he
was sat up on the ambulance well of course that would be a lethal thing to do and that his head fell forward and
every time it was pushed back and it sounded as if he was treated very badly and then when he got to the hospital the
doctors failed to treat him and were asking questions on a on a a racial theme what
are you doing with him and black and white and all this and they didn't get on with resuscitating him and they could
have saved him but they didn't and um I was alarmed by this as know Scotland Yard has been looking into it because uh
Cassie igam has been made these allegations and um I think they had to look into it especially as Jimmy is a a
famous person but uh as far as I know Scotland Yard has found out that what I said at the time 24 years ago is exactly
how it happened I'd met other people and asked them what had happened that night
and some of them told me that they were down there there before the ambulance arrived the ambulance men said in their
statements that when they got there there was no one else present the door was wide open and there was just Jimmy
on the bed and that he was dead and covered in vomit and they just wrapped him up in the blankets and took him away
a policeman was there uh he received a call on his radio and I and and the reason that uh the police were called is
because there was no one there when he got down there he said that as far as the amb men were concerned Jimmy was
dead and they put him on the ambulance and off they went and he didn't remember seeing anyone else there either so this
was all a bit strange so what I did is um I sent everything that I'd heard and everything
that was said to the attorney general for his explanation some people say I mean uh
and they have been saying for years that uh he was poisoned and uh all kinds of different uh things they say you know in
regards to the Mia and the CIA and so on what could have happened is that Jimmy was unconscious and Monica couldn't wake
him up and that uh she called in help and waited for them to come and when they came they realized that he was you know
dangerously ill and then they called an ambulance so the delay might have been the time it took alvinia to get to uh
Monica's flat Monica's hotel room that if an ambulance was called immediately rather than calling his
friends well if if the one of the ambulance men has now changed his statement to say that Jimmy was alive on
the ambulance and that he took his last gasp as they pulled into the hospital for court now if that's true that's a
worse scenario than if Jimmy had been dead because if he was dead then there was nothing anyone could do for him but
if he was alive and there was a delay even of 20 minutes if he could have been delivered into the hands of the doctors
while he was still breathing normally with a normal pulse one would expect that they might have been able to save
him through intubation and a life support machine but the doctors say that they received a dead body one of the
doctors said that they received a dead body that he was cold blue that his FX and larynx were totally
sinos and um that in his opinion Jimmy had been dead for some time do you think your
friend died needlessly it's hard to know without a new inquest exactly what happened because the people
that I would like to speak to the police so far refused to speak to the police and I can't imagine why so I really
don't know if his life could have been saved or not do you have a suspicion I have a suspicion that well
there's two two things either he was dead earlier in the morning and that the the ambulance man's changed his story
to um either oblige somebody else or whatever um because he did tell the ambulance service as well that um there
was nobody on the ambulance uh therefore Monica if she wasn't there couldn't have
known whether Jimmy was breathing normally and um had a normal pulse or not if she
wasn't there but he's changed his statement now to fit handing glove with Monica's and if that's the case and he
was alive on the ambulance I think it makes the situation much worse because if there was a delay even a small delay
any delay when someone's in such a condition can be you know fatal is this two girlfriends at war with each other
no it isn't I don't know Monica and I've got nothing against her he was the one who got engaged to me he wanted to marry
me he talked about children how to name them what names and so on uh that showed
me his love was for me at the end you know so so um she was the past she was a past girlfriend and that was what it was
all [Music] about he was my love of of my life and normally only meet that one time uh if
you made that love Monica Daman the former skating teacher who wound up in a quiet Seaside
Cottage in England painting pictures of her one true love a fly suspended in the Amber of time
Kathy etchingham who once knew all the biggest names in rock in a fine house in the London suburbs with grown children
married to a doctor that's Eric swimming it's bit bouncy water Mitch bouncing up and down with
flippers on who shot this I did that's Jimmy and he's going in with flippers on now using my old cut off
trousers with the snorkel cuz Jim used to walk around with guitar on all the time I mean used to
get up in the morning and put a guitar on before he put his pants on uh he'd be frying his breakfast frying some bacon
but he'd have a guitar on and so the guys used to come around the house our house is just like an open house all the
time there all the guys from the bands there I mean he was generally acknowledged I mean in recently by the
English bands is something different I mean guys like Mick Jagger used to be doing interviews and he would turn on in
the middle of an interview and say I don't know why you're talking to me you should be talking to this Jimmy
Hendricks there's always a lot of groupies around oh yeah but that was the same for everybody
in was a different world you almost always remember penicillin cured everything in them days
you know did he change uh I don't think I'd be capable of really answering that he put this way the biggest change I saw
was in the studio I mean we we spent time in the studio you know the the records were made relatively cheaply I
mean I think uh all your experience album cost about 1,200 to make uh axess B Reser cost about 2 and a half Grand to
make uh by the time we got Electric Lady Land it would become to me less professional job we weren't just going
you know I've always regarded recording studio as like it's a place of doing your work it's like a factory you go in
there play and make sure the tape's running look around with sound get get it all right uh by the time we got
Electric Lady Land uh the were wasn't the preparation hadn't been done the pre-recording preparation hadn't been
done a lot of the songs were being Rec written as they were playing in the studio the you weren't going in with
with a prepared ideas uh and that was the major change I saw um he started getting a lot more indecisive about
things as well uh and there was just so many hangers on coming in the studio and
it it seemed as if he needed that some for in the studio he never had before where when we were in the studio in the
before up until that point in time was only just us and possibly the odd musician like Keith Richard would pop in
or Brian Jones or Dave Miller so you know people would pop in and maybe play a few balls and things on tracks but
there were like there were also Pro musicians all of a sudden when we're in New York on Electric Lady Land there was
just a lot of Hangers On You Know Hangers On were a problem but uh why is that well they're
hard to get rid of I mean they come and sit at your table or they make conversation or they followed him you
know if we went somewhere you could guarantee that you know there'd be half a dozen faces peering through the window
or whatever of of girls or asking for autographs he didn't mind giving them at all but um when you get Disturbed at
home and you know the phone rings and uh people knock on the door it does get annoying and you see Jimmy had this
terrible habit when he'd had a few drinks he'd give people his telephone number so we used to have to have two
phones one that we didn't answer and one that we did and um he didn't want to speak to them
once he was sober he just gave them the number to get rid of them presumably we didn't get these sleep we were traveling
so much um there'd be like a photo call and then we'd have to travel say to the north of England in the car we do a gig
you travel back that maybe that same night from like Manchester to London you then maybe go in the studio and do maybe
a few hours work and you go to sleep and then next day you fly to Paris and you do two dates then there to me it was um
being very young I really enjoyed it because of the traveling you know and um then suddenly we had lots of
girlfriends as well but I was very fond of him and I think he was fond of me what sparked it what were the we used to
have RS we used to argue over anything sort of anything my cooking mainly thought I
couldn't cook you know and he was quite right I can't and uh I can't remember I was only 22 21
20 I mean I can't really remember what sparked things off those in those days um but we did used to have RS and
fights in fact I used to hit him and he'd hit me back and we end up you know fighting in the uh kitchen and that's
when he wrote The Wind Cries Mary because I smashed all the dishes and he had to sweep them up and that's all in
the song Kathy chingam no reading and a number of Hendrick's friends had seen Jimmy party hard over and over and snap
back fine the next morning and they knew Hendrick never used hard drugs like heroin so what happened this time why
did he die in the evening there was 3/4 of an hour where Jimmy went to a party where I wasn't there I don't know what
happened there but I do know one thing that people there gave him drugs and he showed them to me and then he he throw
them into the drainage I cannot understand why somebody who claims to love him to be about to marry him when
he died and were engaged never made any complaint uh that these things happened to him and I just hope that
um they actually find out what happened and uh of course he was my friend and I worked with the guy for 3 years and we
did have arguments on the road but everyone has arguments on the road um of course you're living together for so
long our tour us for 3 months you know um and I still miss the guy I still think about the guy in the statement
that Monica made on the day of Jimmy's death she said that she woke up at 11:00 saw he was covered covered in vomit and
breathing noisily when the inquest Was Heard 10 days later she changed that to 10 to 1020 that she woke up and that
she'd uh gone out to get cigarettes and when she came back he'd been sick um that's quite isn't it from the
first one I mean you either wake up and find them covered in vomit and breathing
noisily or you do all these other things first and the other question I'd like to um
like the answer to is how she managed to remember everything in such great detail
and how she managed to get up have a wash eat breakfast go out and get cigarettes when she'd Taken 3 hours
earlier in 3 hours and 20 minutes earlier 200 Mig of queen of barberone which would knock an elephant Out for8
hours Jimmy Hendrick continues to generate millions of dollars in revenues from his music his father before he died
in 2008 sued successfully to gain control of Jimmy's music royalties but so-called psychedelic live shows like
this one which are relics out of an Out Of Tune past managed to flourish for a while even with barkers he's Timeless I
mean you all the cliche days about Jimmy are true um but he was ahead of his time
then he's ahead of his time now his music his message are just as relevant today as they were years ago um and
that's why I think he's speaking to these young kids to college kids as well as to people that were around when he
was actually in concert are still listening to his music and are still moved by it um Jimmy's an inspiration to
all kinds of people I mean not just guitar players and musicians dance companies The Boston Ballet the the
London ballet have choreographed pieces to Jimmy's music as a legend Jimmy Hendrick still has a huge following
especially in Europe he's come a long way from Greenwich Village almost every day European tourists show up outside
the cafe W looking for signs of their hero this couple for example from Milan typical in America it was a was nobody
knows him know especially when uh the part of arlem I know that didn't like him because he wasn't a real R&B players
no and uh just when he he goes to he moves in Europe in London no everybody knows him and uh he he he earn his
really Fame in uh in Europe and uh maybe America is is not very generous with Jimmy andri I think that Jimmy andri
music can be compared to anything else because his way of playing guitar his way on moving his way of singing his way
of making the show is really peculiar and it's really apart from the rest of our people
and I think that I like Jim and is most of all for the energy that's exactly comes and stricks off of his figure I
think he completely changed the whole um nature of rock and roll music The hris Legacy but little or none of this
River of money has found its way into the pockets of those who were there at the beginning you sit there you know you
have certain rights on things but when a friends died if I wanted to take up anything in
them days on my rights on Jimmy it would have meant i' have to Su Jimmy's father
and uh that certainly was something I was never prepared to do things have changed now though because
Jimmy's father's suing the people that's ruin the state so I wouldn't have to be
suing Jimmy's father anymore it came as a shock to me when the when the police were um asked to investigate because I
didn't ask for that in my file I just asked for them to reopen the inquest and hear new evidence I didn't know that
there was going to be a Scotland Yard inquiry the Scotland Yard inquiry is just um preliminary inquiry to uh make
statements for Witnesses living in this country they finished that on the 17th of February and they handed that back to
the crown prosecution service who then take a look at it and then they pass it on to the Attorney General Sir Nicholas
Lyle and yes and then he makes a decision whether to reopen the inquest quash the original verdict reopen the
inquest and have another hearing only he can do that the police can't do it Crown
prosecution service can't do it that's how the law is in this country as for Jimmy's friends Monica danman painted an
endless stream of portraits in her home just outside of London she was always haunted by the last hours of his life
wondering if she did everything she could have to save his life eventually she committed
suicide Kathy Edington retired living in London content with her memories it should be known what happened that
morning whether even if the um the facts are unsa y it needs to be known everyone has a
right for their death to be um investigated as for no reading he died quietly never fully satisfied that
he understood Jimmy's death well he was a dear friend of mine and like I worked with a guy for 3 years on the road and
like if you work with a guy for three years on the road you get to know the guy even though you might have arguments
with the guy and I was very young when Jimmy died so it did affect me and I still think about him now I've
just sort of haven't felt right about it Jimmy raised the bar he raised the bar in U musical ways in pop culture ways he
scared the B Jesus out of everybody including Eric Clapton I can recall seeing the cover of the I guess it was
the are you experienced album and I remember saying to myself nah this may be just a little too
freaky even for me of course you heard the music and and that all changed [Music]
