[Music] next on mug shots Giani versace's assassin Andrew kunan who I think he was wow man it
depends who he was talking to he wanted to be the ultimate American jigo I don't
think we would have put a picture in the yearbook that said most likely to be a free killer he began to have this
Obsession about being remembered as someone he decided that the way to do it would be to quote kill one of the king
of the gays kill Versace [Music] [Music] the morning of July 15th 1997 was a typical Tuesday in Miami Beach
Florida those who had recovered from the nightclubs had already made their way to
the beach and the surf soothing Roar police patrolled on bicycles and Giani Versace was on his morning
stroll dressed typically in black and gray the Italian fashion designer walked three blocks from his Mansion at 1116
Ocean Drive to the news Cafe there he picked up five magazines at 8:40 he was on his way
[Music] home Versace was taking a leisurely stroll as he usually did with new paper
and coffee in hand he was attempting to open his door as he stuck the key in the
door someone said something to him from behind as he turned his head to the left
he was shot once in the left cheek causing him to fall backwards and a second shot was underneath the right
ear versace's assassin calmly walked away sh yes shot how did he get shot there I don't know he's walking in front
of his home start Versace Versace was raced to a nearby hospital surveying the scene the
detectives found a morning dove that had been killed by a bullet fragment at first they saw the bird as a symbol of a
mafia hit and already the hunt was on for the suspect Witnesses had chased him to a nearby parking garage we happened
to have a police officer working in accident at 13th in Collins at one corner of the parking garage at 9: 12:00
a.m. a pile of clothes was found on the third level of the garage outside a red Chevrolet pickup he immediately changed
clothes and snuck out the only part of the garage that was still uncovered by officers cuz we we hadn't had enough
officers at the scene yet he got into a cab and he drove North at 9:21 a.m. Giani Versace was officially pronounced
dead at a nearby hospital by 10:00 a.m. a crowd had gathered in front of the Versace Mansion and news helicopter
hovered in the sky word had spread that Giani Versace had been murdered I thought it was a movie I mean you were
on South Beach the place are always out here overseeing production shoots I see a guy laying there I thought it was a
movie and sure enough it's G Giani Versace when I saw this man on the stairs I realized that was Johnny
because the door was open and then that was him so when I was very close I said oh my God this is Johnny Versi this was
an uh a violent act as we've unfortunately witnessed in our in our brief history with John lenon and other
people I believe that's probably what it was FBI special agent Keith Evans arrived shortly before noon he'd gotten
word that a description of the Assassin matched a man he had been seeking for a long time well first I I didn't really
know who Versace was when I got down there but once I found out and uh we know obviously the shock to Miami Beach
was great and uh there was you know again several hundred people outside of his residence on the beach mourning and
uh you know creating a real scene as he surveyed the scene Evans caught the crackle of a police
radio I happened to hear over the radio that they had found a red pickup truck in a parking garage several blocks away
and that clicked you know the red pickup truck because I knew the one had been stolen previously I had him check the
VIN and eventually once I got the VIN checked then it came back and then you know right from that point on I knew you
know who the subject was possibly going to [Music] be meanwhile in Washington DC word of
versace's murder was of special interest to journalist Moren or she had just finished writing an article for Vanity
Fair Magazine on a fugitive wanted in a CrossCountry murder spree interestingly in the course of my reporting I found
out from one of his roommates that he had once met Johnny Versace and nobody knew that
by late afternoon instinct told her this was her man she headed to Miami Beach at 8:30 p.m. police confirmed what
had been known for almost 10 hours Miami Beach police investigators in cooperation with agents of the Federal
Bureau of Investigation are currently looking for Andrew Philip kunan as a suspect in the murder of Giani
verace since June 12th 27-year-old Andrew kunanon had been on the FBI's 10 most wanted list for the murders of four
men I thought Andrew Ganan was an interesting figure to follow because he did not fit the pattern of the usual
dysfunctional uh loner serial killer type he was very social apparently on the surface he had gone to a fancy prep
school he was very bright he was goodlook uh why would he become a killer and that was what attracted me in the
first place to the story in the days to follow Andrew Kun nanan's face was everywhere though he remained as always
a step ahead of the law after Versace was killed we had thousands and thousands of can sightings all over the
country out of the country on airplanes I mean it was amazing and we followed up
on every single lead everybody was scared particularly the gay themes that would the beaches in the evening or go
to the gay cafes everybody was on the lookout There Was Fear random fear among the the gay community I would drive home
from work and I'd be looking on both sides of the street and going could that be him because there was this big man
hunt going on here for so long for this crazy whatever he was it became embarrassingly clear that Andrew kunan
had been hiding in plain sight for 8 weeks key players still dispute whether the FBI distributed The crucial wanted
posters before A's murder there was a warrant out for his arrest but it really never made it south of West Palm Beach
Andrew could have walked around all he wanted cuz we had no posters of them posted anywhere Flyers were distributed
throughout the Miami area to local clubs magazines organizations and uh I still you know I
have a couple left over in my desk people thought that Andrew must be a brilliant Master criminal because he had
been able to elude the police so much and I think it's very much more a case where had they been on their toes a
little more he would have been caught a lot earlier within hours of versace's murder
his sister Donatella flew into Miami on Thursday Donatella and brother Santo had
the body cremated and then the ashes were flown to Italy Tuesday July 22nd there was an
elaborate funeral for Giani Versace in the historic duo in Milan the service brought celebrities from
around the world Princess Diana and Elden John were among those paying their respects this would have pleased Andrew
no end that by killing verace he caused Princess Diana to go to versace's funeral so somehow he could put himself
in this Pantheon of celebrity not only with the man he considered one of the gay icons Johnny Versace but the
greatest tabloid celebrity of all Princess Diana back in Miami Beach the publicity
died down but the Manhunt was going strong and the search for answers intensified who was Andrew kunanon why
did he kill and where was he now the mystery was only beginning to unfold so many people have this perception that he
was only this way you know um like Charles Manson or something but there was a lot of different sides to him
almost like he had multiple personalities when mugshots continues kunan and's childhood of privilege turns
to despair I would say that he he really wasn't abnormal in any way you know he's
pretty typical of of anybody's little brother Andrew kunan was born in 1969 in San Diego California the youngest of
four children teachers would tell my mother he's gifted or he's Advanced you know he was only three or 4 years old in
uh preschool and he was already showing signs that you know he he had a good ability to learn my parents would have
parties and at like 7 years old Andrew would entertain them all with his he tell jokes over the dinner table and
they would all laugh and so I think think he got a taste thick then for entertaining ever since Andrew was 5
years old he always dressed sharp he was wearing a button-down shirt and a tie he was very um sweet and kind
and um he never got in school fights he was always got good grades and um Chris would always want to wrestle and stuff
with him and and Andrew would say I will not res Resort to such Neanderthal Behavior journalist Moren orth traced
kunan and's life in the book vulgar favors her more detached view of his upbringing Unearthed some disturbing
family secrets Andrew had a very dysfunctional childhood he was considered the young Genius of the
family he was terribly spoiled and his parents who really didn't like each other but stayed together gave him the
master bedroom with a house to sleep in he was spoiled he was a bit of a brat you know prince Andrew she used to call
his mother really was emotionally disturbed and um and and was on a lot of different medications and she was really
obsessed in a way with Andrew and very possessive of him at the same time so was his dad he was a strict military
father you know but just like don't talk back and oldfashioned but not with Andrew though he was his pride and joy
his dad was kind of a figure who would lie all the time about how much money he had and he and he gave Andrew these
values of materialism that really weren't healthy at all a little bit of the example my father had set for seeing
us going from owning a Vega to having a Cadillac you know and I think that Andrew wanted these things in the
seventh grade Andrew was already uh so grandiose in his own mind that for one Halloween he chose the prettiest tall
blonde girl in the class and had her be Princess Diana and he dressed up as Prince Charles and that's how they came
to the Halloween party because by the seventh grade Andrew was already Prince Charles in his own mind I would believe
that Andrew's first uh Taste of this other class was when he went to Bishop [Music]
school though his brother and sisters attended Public Schools Andrew was sent to a private high school in affluent La
Hoya it's a fairly well-healed Bunch that goes there um predominantly children of do doors lawyers
professionals or you know that kind of thing I think it's a fairly exclusive School despite its best efforts to be
otherwise Andrew was flamboyant he was very extroverted he wanted attention all the time he was the opposite of a kind
of a moody dark Coline figure he was definitely not a skullking or violent or dark type Andrew kunan seemed to have
the self assurance that allowed him to be openly gay I think the sort ort of defining moment maybe for some people
was uh at a Bishop's dance he brought an older gentleman and he came dressed in like a a red leather bodysuit but the
kunan family apparently had no idea about his sexual orientation he was more of a bookworm type he wasn't really
involved in in like contact sports or uh lifting weights or building his physique
he was he was more into building his mind you know he was he he didn't really Act act very
feminite well during his school years he brought over people you know friends wimp girls and guys you know but they
never acted um the girls they would hug and kiss you know and and um but with his guy friends they didn't act at all
homosexual he always lied a lot he wanted everybody to think that he came from a very rich family he would say
that his parents had sugar plantations or that they lived on Fifth Avenue but was he a big bser like he was just full
of it you know uh yeah absolutely that was him Moren orth says that Andrew began
associating with a drug crowd in his last two years at Bishop's his father was always teaching him to dress well
and look good and making him think that he had a lot more than he really did and
I think he started kind of hustling on the side to to to make that money he was voted most likely to be
remembered in his yearbook because he was so flamboyant and if people people made fun of him for quote being a
feminite he would just turn it around and say do you want some it's certainly an ironic twist to the story I wasn't
like we thought he would be most likely to be remembered because he was going to
become this violent uh serial killer or kill a much revered and famous designer was just because of his ability to
create Scandal that yearbook page would later be broadcast around the world but kunan and's sister points out an even
more telling caption four words he picked to place next to his senior photo it was in French a quote and it
said after me the storm is how it's translated I think it was more of a just a goodbye to the school like after I
leave the school it's never going to be the same I think that's what he meant at
the time of riding it but now it's taken on many different meanings you know because of everything that transpired
then shortly after graduation Andrew kunan and's unstable world was shaken to the core when his father suddenly
abandoned the family his father had been found out by the last stock broker that
he had worked for to appear to have been taking clients money and using it for different purposes and he basically sold
the family house out from under the mother who had originally put up the money for the down payment from an
inheritance she got and and fled to the Phil Philippines and left them completely high and dry when my father
left that devastated all of us because my father was the uh the rock of our family he was the solidness of our
family he he was the provider he was really close with Andrew and Andrew was very close with him in the months to
follow Andrew kunan drifted he tried College in San Diego then headed North toward an encounter that would lead him
to be remembered after all he took a little break and went up to San Francisco to live with a friend who had
inherited some money and I think that he maybe was uh doing odd jobs living with
with her and uh maybe just living off of her I'm not sure he lived in this beautiful house in the Berkeley Hills
and he told everybody it was his house and he would go over to the Castor District at night and hang around the
bars and things and one night he was invited to a big party where Versace was going to be Andrew kunan dreamed of
celebrity and fame the easy way designer Giani Versace represented everything he
wanted mugshots continues with the first meeting of Versace and kunan and the Last Supper before the killing began he
was so excited about it he came home to Berkeley at dawn and he went into the bedroom of the couple he was living with
and jumped up and down on their bed and said you'll never believe who I went clubbing with Johnny Versace Johnny
Versace I didn't find that there was any animation that the Andrew and Johnny Versace had sex together it was merely
one night going out nightclubbing but that was enough to give Andrew an obsession about Versace and to brag that
he knew [Music] him on October 21st 1990 a meeting took place in San Francisco that would
reverberate 7 years later in Miami Beach Andrew kunan a young man obsessed with celebrity would meet his very first one
Versace was being FedEd at a gay club because he was in San Francisco to design costumes for one of the San
Francisco operas and so Andrew went up to Versace at this party and uh Versace said don't I remember you from somewhere
LOD diomo and and um Andrew said something to the I'm very flattered that you remember well of course he hadn't
ever met him Andrew talked about that night in San Francisco where he supposedly met verace how they U met
prior to the uh performance and then got together afterwards to spend uh quite a
bit of time in a limousine and at a party or two um after the show I found uh one of Andrew's friends who remembers
that night of seeing Andrew pulling over in a white limousine to the curb to kind
of show off to him that he was in the car with Versace not long after meeting Versi kunanon left San Francisco and
moved in with his mother in a small apartment in San Diego by day he worked in a drugstore and took some classes by
night he dried to the gay Enclave called Hillcrest as someone else alog [Music] together I never knew Andrew as Andrew
kunan and we all knew him as Andrew dilva I believe that he actually made the name Silva up it sounded elegant and
fit a rather exotic uh personality of which he definitely went to Great Lengths to effect my mother had once
told me I went to go visit and she says oh yeah Andrew he calls himself Andrew D
Silva and I thought it was because he was embarrassed that he was just middle class Andrew kunan and so he makes this
name up and he goes to the bars Hill Crest would be the center of Andrew kunan and's world for the next six years
Anthony daeri was a waiter at kunan and's favorite restaurant California Cuisine physically I would describe
Andrew as um initially a very put together uh button down um Suave type of character Andrew dilva was one of the
kind of unofficial social directors of the Hillcrest neighborhood he he didn't work so he just walked around all day
and hung out in the bars and he knew every body Andrew did seem to have a lot of money as well he never was short of
cash he would uh take care of the check and take care of the service uh handsomely and he would befriend new
people coming into town always trying to make connections and I think since he was also dealing dope on the side it was
always good to try to find new customers friend seanan had been dealing drugs for years he started out stealing
painkillers from his drugstore job and grad ated to pedling hardcore illicit drugs like crystal meth it didn't seem
unusual that he came in with all kinds of different people I mean the way he portrayed himself was a you know the son
of a wealthy family um you know it all the story all fit Anthony White was another friend from the restaurant I
never really knew clearly how he got his money it was just always assumed that he
was very wealthy [Music] in fact as we were to come to understand he championed escorts for older
gentlemen also involved with stolen goods and um the dispersement of such items uh any number of which were uh
probably responsible for supplying him with his income he was just somebody who cut a swap from the closeted Rich guys
who were married in La Hoya all the way down to the lowest SNM dark strung out crystal meth people Nicole Marie Ramirez
is a well-known Hillcrest columnist and activist he knew kunan and's true ambition was to be kept by an older man
your normal kept man is is usually very goodlook and and very well built and goes to the gym every day Andrew just
was average really and and compared to them but I think he learned fast that there's many ways to skin a cat and
so I think that he learned about High Society or the Arts and so forth so that he could keep their interest and he in
fact did yes it's true Andrew did have U over the course of time uh several older
men who acted as benefactors to him in his school days when they had career day would surpris of Andrew stood up and
said he wanted to be the American jiggalo and he began to live with a very rich man and was to live the life for a
while that he thought he always wanted unfortunately he had fallen in love with David Matson right at the same moment
practically that this rich man decided to keep him David Madson Was An Architect from Minneapolis for a time
kunanon would lie to both men in an attempt to keep up both relationships finally David Matson just broke up with
him and Andrew couldn't accept that and he broke up with the older man at the same time that David was breaking up
with him and he was kind of dumped and that's when he began to unraveled authorities believe this rejection was
the moment that triggered kunan and's murder spree I believe Andrew must have looked in the mirror and finally reality
hit him as he looked into that mirror and that This American jigo Life of his was over he started gaining weight and
he started you see him without having not shaved um just looking like not put together a lot of the money didn't exist
he was just running up all kinds of debts on his credit cards he had this very wealthy lifestyle and now it was
over with in the spring of 1997 Andrew kunanon broke overweight and desperate announced he was leaving
Hillcrest Andrew started giving all of his clothes away and certain of his possessions away and said he was going
to move to San Francisco to start a new life on April 24th 1997 kunanon threw himself a farewell party at his favorite
restaurant for once he made it clear he wouldn't be able to pick up the bill his platinum card was cut off several of
his friends got together to uh decorate the table and select U special bottles of wine the dinner was a somber affair
with all the trappings of a wake for his dessert we presented the uh chocolate truffle Tor which was his favorite and
instead of good luck or best wishes it said goodbye to you goodbye to you I wrote that by the way mhm
that dinner was the last time San Diego's gay community would see Andrew kunanon he was changing his life I don't
know if he was he wasn't changing his homosexuality but he was moving out of San Diego and he was going to live with
my sister and whatever happened during that time went horribly wrong when mugshots returns kunan and's
despair turns to rage and The Killing Spree begins I believe that Andrew had basically come to the end of his
acceptable fantasy world within himself he began to go on the journey that we know is a killing
spree in April 1997 Andrew kunanon left San Diego's Hillcrest gay district supposedly for a new life in San
Francisco instead depressed and angry he headed to Minneapolis to visit a friend
named Jeff Trail and try to reconcile with David Madson the lover who' rejected him Andrew was very angry that Jeff
seemed to be distancing himself uh from Andrew and really didn't want much to do
with him and Andrew kind of forced himself on Jeff to stay at Jeff's place and then he went over to David's uh
house and invited Jeff to to meet him there although kunan was furious at Jeff Trail for trying to persuade Madson not
to make up with him kunanon stayed at tril's apartment briefly there he stole Trail's 40 caliber pistol on April 27th
he arranged a meeting with Trail at madson's apartment that's where he snapped Jeff dropped by David madson's
apartment just for a few minutes he thought and that's when Jeff Trail was killed the attack was frenzied 27 blows
with a claw hammer one of them caused the victim Swiss Army watch to stop at 9:55 p.m. the first victim Jeffrey Trail
was uh someone who Andrew referred to as his best friend he was uh from the Annapolis Academy had appreciated good
levels of earned success respect and uh a prideful person none of the things that Andrew was his body stayed there
for a couple of days really while David Matson came back into the apartment and that's one of the Mysteries was David
there um of his own valtion or was Andrew keeping him there once they realized that they couldn't stay there
much longer they had rolled Jeff's body up in a carpet and uh they left the apartment in David's Jeep his red Jeep
when Madson did not show up for work concerned co-workers alerted madson's building super who checked his apartment
and discovered tril's body when police arrived they found hand cuffs on the dresser and a black duffel bag
containing SNM pornography an empty holster and bullets they believe the bag belonged to David Madson and he became
their first suspect kunan took Madson about an hour outside Minneapolis they parked next to
an abandoned house on the shore of East Rush Lake there kunan pulled out the gun
he'd stolen from Trail's apartment and pointed it at his former lover Andrew forced David out of the the
car near the edge of a remote Lake and he shot him David Madson was found shot twice in the face with defensive wounds
on his hands as if he had begged for his life police now had to look for a new suspect before matson's body was
discovered Andrew kunan had already driven madson's red Jeep to Chicago the FBI first became involved when they were
part of a task force in Minneapolis that was helping to uh assist when the murder
investigation of the people in Minneapolis by the time special agent Keith Evans and the FBI were on the case
Kun nanan had killed again May 3rd in Chicago this time the victim was an older wealthy man lee miglin was a very
rich married real estate developer who it appears Andrew did meet uh on previous occasions and also knew his son
and um I think that people have now begun to believe definitely that Lee miglin was gay although it was never
been proved the family would absolutely never ever believe that that Mr miglin found wrapped up in a rug taped um say
for two holes at the nostril did resemble the U SNM Styles miglin was found stabbed
repeatedly with pruning shears his head half severed with a gardening saw the body was discovered in his garage next
to his silver German sports car Andrew kunanon had dumped David madson's Jeep stolen Lee black Lexus and
headed east the jeep was ticketed I think three or four times and it was only two or three days later when they
finally realized that the Jeep belonged to David Matson and it was parked right around the corner from Lee Midland's
house and by the way this must be the same person who killed David Madson Chicago Police traced the red Jeep back
to Minneapolis where local homicide detectives finally inspected the black bag more closely when they opened the
velcro strap cover the name of the new suspect emerged Andrew kunanon was now a fugitive wanted for all three murders
apparently he was noted to change his appearance quite frequently I didn't really think that there was any problem
with his appearance as far as the investigation because we had multiple photographs of him and various images
again it comes back to the you know one person in a crowd of a thousand it's going to be difficult to locate any one
person despite a massive Manhunt by dozens of law enforcement agencies kunanon apparently spent time in New
York City Anonymous in a world of gay bathouses and clubs authorities began to close in on kunanon tracking the calls
he made from miglin's car phone but their efforts were leaked to the Press he drove the miglin's car South and
realized that he was being tracked because there was a news leak that they were tracking him in Lee miglin's car
which he heard over the radio Andrew kunanon needed to trade cars immediately and he pulled in off the highway into a
remote Civil War Cemetery and basically shot his fourth victim William Reese who
was a caraker at the at the cemetery for his truck unfortunately the caretaker at
the cemetery in which Andrew exchanged vehicles for his um last portion of his journey down into uh Florida was in the
wrong place at the wrong time Andrew kunanon drove Reese's red Chevrolet pickup South on May 11th he
arrived in Miami Beach I can't say any idea why he picked Miami other than you know just thinking it would be a great
place for a a gay male in his uh age group to hide out by this time Miami Beach had become a mecca for
high-profile stars and international jet Setters including the one celebrity Andrew kunanon claimed to have met Giani
Versace Versace was one of the people who crafted South Beach and made it what it is in the fashion and international
world today he was not only a celebrity but he was the most successful fashion designer in the
world race comes to South Beach one morning on his way to Cuba and says I love it I'm going to stay here checks
into the Marland Hotel loves it and then all of a sudden a year later he's building his mansion on the beach right
on the street that has a lot to say for South Beach Miami was very much like San
Diego the Miami gay area physically resembles San Diego it's on the beach um it's near a border there a lot of sort
of Latinos there that's kind of look he had it would be easy to blend in and it was a very Anonymous place for him to be
because there's so many tourists there all the time so I think he felt comfortable in the climate he felt
comfortable in the way of life there was a large gay community and so for hiding
purposes it was was a great place for him to go he had parked the stolen red truck of
William ree right out in front of the hotel where he was staying the kind of CD hotel where he was staying in South
Beach and then he moved it into a garage and left it there and it had been there
for about a month kunan and stayed at the Normandy Plaza Hotel assuming the identity of a friend from San Diego the
hotel manager remembers him he was a very quiet man he kept a very low profile he didn't mingle with much
people he he didn't talk at all with any people he slept all day and at night time he uh went to play at South Beach
there's evidence that he took up his old life there hustled while he was living in this hotel but he was also running
out of money I presume that's why he went to the pawn shop to Pawn off uh his personal stuff that he had stolen or
whatever kunan went to the cash on the beach pawn shop with a coin he'd stolen from his Chicago victim Lee miglin he
came to looking nice with the short t-shirt cap glasses so in my mind I never imagined that it would be a serial
kill to PA you have to ask for legal ID and he gave me American passport and the
passport they don't have address so you have to ask for the address and he gave me the noral the plaza that he was
staying there the pawn shop woman filled out a form and gave it to the police but
it sat on somebody's desk who had gone on leave and ironically a lot of people had been taken off duty to go look for
Andrew so the clue is right there but they didn't know it we had one investigator assigned to do all our pawn
shops we're talking 500 ponds a week as an average at that time and that was one
more charge that law enforcement agencies had dropped the ball the FBI never bothered to distribute all the
wanted posters that they had of him to that community and so as a result um he even though a few people thought they
might have recognized him there was no place to look to see if their hunch was right the only kunan and sighting that
we had prior to versace's death was a Miami Subs uh we had an employee call 911 and state that there was a gentleman
there that he thinks he saw on a TV program but it wasn't sure it was him we actually dispatched a unit that arrived
8 minutes after the call came in of course when we arrived to Miami Subs uh Andrew conanan was gone uh they had
video surveillance cameras which was great when we pulled the video surveillance camera they were pointed at
the employees for watching for theft problems rather than pointing to the uh public so that didn't help us at all all
we got was a picture of the employee calling us by now Andrew kunanon had been in Miami Beach for 8 weeks on the
morning of July 15th 1997 he would announce his presence to the world Andrew couldn't not have made a more
poignant choice of Target and if in fact he was angry and upset this was an icon
to be destroyed that would guarantee he would live at least in infamy for such a deed
still ahead Andrew kunanon and the second meeting with Giani Versace it was as normal a morning as as
any other morning at the home Mr versachi's up early usually enjoying the mornings he came down for breakfast he
said good morning to me and the rest of the staff as he always does very gentle man very very loving person he then said
I'm going to go pick up some few magazines and when I come back I'll have breakfast it was on July 15th 1997 at
approximately 8:15 in the morning that Mr Versace came to the news Cafe to purchase some newspapers and grab a cup
of coffee uh he did this every morning that he was here on Miami Beach when he wasn't
overseas on that morning as Giani Versace returned to his Mansion at 1116 Ocean Drive Andrew kunanon was waiting
across the street as Versace arrived at his gate kunanon stepped up behind him when I heard like a popping sound
pop pop pop we all ran out the front at the same time when I got to the front of
the house I saw Mr line uh on the stairs there were several witnesses to the shooting one of them gave Chase until
kunan turned and pointed the 40 caliber gun at him after Mr Versace was uh murdered uh Mr kunanon went to a uh
parking garage located approximately one block from the uh Versace Mansion as kunanon changed clothes and flag down a
taxi the trail ran cold once again all the way through youve got Andrew leaving the scene of a crime very quickly and
you have the police never being able to uh catch him a lot of botched uh leads and a lot of things that should have
been different than they were earlier today investigator seized a truck uh and vehicle that was identified as stolen uh
from the murder victim in New Jersey kunan is known to be a male prostitute Who services a fluent clientele kunan is
well educated well-dressed is very articulate for the next week as The Manhunt intensified police and FBI
followed up on thousands of leads including the rumor that kunanon had disguised himself as a woman I think it
complicated the search cuz now we're not just looking for a male a white male with short hair now we got to look at
every female was he shaving he's had to put on a wig was he dressing as a woman this is a serial killer that could be
disguised as anybody and then on Wednesday July 23rd at 3:45 p.m. Fernando Carrera the caretaker of a
houseboat just 6 miles from versace's Mansion arrived for a routine inspection while its owner was out of
town he found the top lock broken and the door open Carrera pulled out his gun and walked
inside a shot rang out from the second floor coming up the end of the line for Andrew kunan
[Music] 8 days after the murder of Giani Versace houseboat caretaker Fernando Carrera had
his son call 911 to report a shot had been fired on a houseboat what's your emergency they're shooting what's the
drug 550 it's a it's a b house soon the boat was surrounded by police FBI and media
as rumors spread that the person inside was Andre kunanon one of the nation's 10
Most Wanted men for 3 hours police vainly tried to contact the men inside finally the SWAT team was sent
in the tear gas had no effect once the uh SWAT team made their entry they located a uh dead body up in the second
floor bedroom at that point they exited uh they sealed crime scene and then we took over the scene the search
of the houseboat went on into the night the downstairs was a mess uh there was no food left in the house boat except uh
a lot of peanut shells a head of lettuce in the refrigerator Rotten Tomato all the food was gone uh as far as money he
was down to a couple of dollar bills a few uh 50 cent coins some dimes and nickel he was down to uh his last uh dve
a money he was out of money Navaro went upstairs to identify the body Mr kunanon was laying on his back
his head up against the headboard with his neck propped up and he had a self-inflicted gunshot wound through his
mouth with no exit wound the 40 caliber uh weapon was still on on his stomach and his left hand was laying on his
side after 3 months five murders and thousands of investigators the hunt for Andrew kunanon was over I think we've
gotten to a point in our society where we've lost the ability to judge now whether we uh idolize people for being
good or we just love to hear about them because they're bad and evil who was Andrew conanan I would say um nobody
really does know for sure I would um say an unfortunate confused um talented young man who had a great deal of
potential and that was never realized I really would have loved to talk to him and possibly get a confession from him
find out what was inside his mind why did he kill the people that he killed prior to Versace what what made that
switch go off Andrew kunanon is buried in a simple grave near his mother's home outside San Diego and got his wish to be
remembered and linked in death with the man whose accomplishments and fame he envied in life Andrew kunan never
believed that you had to work for a living He believe that you could hustle and lie your way through life and he
wanted to be famous without doing anything for it and the only way he could be famous was To Kill
