Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) analysis is used when traditional DNA testing isn’t possible, such as with degraded samples or hair without a root.
In the Gilgo Beach investigation, investigators recovered rootless hairs from burlap used to wrap victims. By 2023, a lab was able to extract an mtDNA sequence from those hairs using advanced testing methods.
Because mtDNA is passed down through the maternal line, it cannot uniquely identify a person, but it can narrow suspects to a specific family. In this case, the DNA helped point investigators toward the family of Rex Heuerman.
After comparing the sequence to DNA obtained from discarded items, investigators were able to pursue further testing and build their case. Heuerman was later charged in connection with multiple murders.
mtDNA is rarely used on its own, but it can provide critical leads when other forms of DNA evidence are unavailable.
