city streets eily empty all day similar to the scene in Boston after the marathon bombings both means in stark
contrast to the chaos and Carnage that shattered the French Capital Friday night this marks the first coordinated
ISIS attack in the west joining us now is Michael Morell a former deputy director of the CIA and CBS News senior
National Security contributor Michael good evening I want to ask you in two weeks time we have had three attacks
that we believe were incited if not organized by ISIS the Downing of the Russian airplane the bayout bombing and
now these attacks in Paris are we underestimating isis's capabilities Nora I don't think it's possible to overstate
the significance of what's happened here in the last two weeks um the Downing of
The Airliner first the only the third time that a bomb has brought down an airliner in a quarter century and as you
as you mentioned um this appears to be the first Isis directed attack in the west the second largest terrorist attack
in the west since the Madrid bomb Bings um this is very very significant I mean Isis has said they want to be a global
terrorist organization how can we deny that they've succeeded um so I think they are succeeding um and what that
says to me Nora is that our strategy to defeat them our strategy to degrade them
is simply not working um one of the responsibilities Nora of um an intelligence official is to be able to
look the president in the eye and tell him that his policy is not working and I think we've reached that point I mean
you've helped lead the CIA what needs to be done one of the things that we have to look at Nora is is how did they how
were they able to move these operatives from the Middle East at least some of them um to Paris and more importantly
how were they able to communicate under the radar and I think that's going to be
the most interesting issue because I think what we're going to find is what we've worried about for the last year is
that there're they're using encrypted Communications they're taking their Communications putting commercial
encryption on top of of it that we can't break and that the producers of those products will not give us the key for so
I think this is going to open up an entire new debate about security vers privacy you mean companies like apple
