in the summer of 1991 the town of Bathgate in Scotland welcomes some new arrivals Carol Jarvis
and her three children settled into the community almost immediately but the father 41-year-old Harry Jarvis was not
the loving family man that he tried to portray from the minute he met Carol he was determined that she was going to be
a possession he didn't treat her well he treated her dreadfully in a Twisted plot
to end the marriage Jarvis began drugging Carol and moved a new lover into the family's garden shed but the
shed was basically just that a very small very basic shed dirty damp apart from a cover or a duv that and I think
there maybe a couple of pillows there was no nothing else when his children began to suspect something was wrong
Jarvis claimed their mother had traveled over 60 M away to Dundee but in reality
Jarvis had murdered Carol and hidden her body under the floorboards when the police looked in that place very sadly
they discovered the partially decomposed remains of what appeared to be female person Harry Jarvis had proved himself
to be one of the world's most evil [Music] [Music] killers on the 14th of September 2009
Graham Jarvis went to visit his sick Mom Carol when Graham arrived his mother wasn't there and his father Harry Jarvis
refused to let him into the house it would be unusual for Mom not to be there and and do a disappear act you know Dad
you would understand but Mom just never done that at all so I was like H something's all right here less than 24
hours later Graham's dad Harry Jarvis went on the run with his lover who'd been Secret living in a shed in the
garden the truth about what really happened in that house in bargate begins to emerge to the surface and everyone
realizes that Jarvis is an absolute monster there can be no doubt about it Jarvis really does deserve a place in a
rogue's gallery of evil Killers this killer Story begins 300 mil south of bargate in Lincolnshire on the
east coast of England Jarvis was born in in Grimsby 1950s he was a chancer always
looking for the best deal for himself he was quite you know he was one of those people who is self-focused self-
obsessed was never looking out for the good of other people little is known of Jarvis's
childhood but as an adult he'd moved down to South London where he tried his hand at a few different careers is so
dad's um employment is is varied if you like Dad used to switch between being an
engineer and a bus driver and then went from bus driving to coach driving but he never really sort of
stood on a on a job for long you know he used to sort of change a boat by the late 1970s Jarvis was still living and
working in South London the 29-year-old had begun dating a younger woman named Carol mayard I think
one was in a late late teens at the time and yeah I think Dad was obviously I think it was a 12 year age gap between
the two mom was actually working in a shop at the time and dad had just sort of went into the shop and um just asked
if they could go out on a date and it it went from there if you like the Rel relationship blossomed despite Carol's
family being against the partnership the family would have looked at him looked at the age difference and
and probably thought no no no this isn't good for Carol who's still relatively inexperienced in life and probably
relatively naive in 1982 Carol married Jarvis and they went on to have four children
together the couple decided to move over 400 miles away from London something their eldest son Graham remembers
well about 91 we moved up to to Scotland it was a long way and you know obviously as kids
we weren't really sure what was going on or the reasoning behind it apparently that was because he had lots of
arguments with his family and things started falling apart down in London and he wanted to get
away from everything and they went just as far as they could possibly go by by going to
Scotland the Jarvis family settled in a small town called Bathgate in West loan about 20 mi west of
Edinburgh the town was an ordinary westloan Town working people not a a particularly wealthy environment
but not abject poverty Carol seemed to flourish in her new area becoming a brownie and Girl Guide leader
I always remember like she was really good at sewing and you know sewing on the badges and on the the uniform or the
the Sash and yeah I think she was generally happy and and love doing it mom was quite partial to dancing she
was always again like at parties of the life and soul and sort of doing the twist or just really embarrassing M
Danes to be fair but other than that I think generally her Hobbies were sort of limited just because they they for kids
and you know growing up and balancing that out Jarvis continued his work as a coach
driver doing longdistance Journeys and spending days at a time away from his family there was always some sort of
Scandal involved in in terms of dad and and jobs you know and I always remember him you know getting a a job with a fish
delivering company and you know all of a sudden we've got like tons and tons of fish in the freezer and it's like Dad
what's going on and obviously it's time he's not delivered them you know and for all
intens and purposes Jarvis was a perfectly ordinary comparatively hardworking bus
driver but beneath the surface there were other more complicated things going on Jarvis had amassed a number of
criminal convictions over the years for dishonesty offenses Jarvis was a petty Thief Li
bezler a frauder and in that period of their marriage and their Carol's giving birth
to the children and looking after them he goes to prison on a number of occasions he was always getting into
scrap in criminality he didn't seem to be particularly grounded he was you know moving around and changing jobs he he
wasn't a particularly stable person while transient Jarvis engaged in questionable Behavior Carol was holding
the family together if anybody was to sort of put a label on M it would be you know loyal and definitely family
driven she would put the family before herself and you know especially the four kids Harry Jarvis and Carol's
relationship was tumultuous by the time they were living in Scotland but Carol did her best to Shield her children from
the reality of the situation Carol was borted with him she would gloss over his faults and she would hide quite a lot
from their children but the kids were aware that something wasn't right with their dad's Behavior they never knew
what to expect from Jarvis as his moods were unpredictable growing up seeing Dad it
was almost a bit of a an enigma you wouldn't sure what you would get with that and one day you would be you know
fantastic and you know he used to do everything for you there was the times where by
obviously was tired and you know when Dad was tired you would stay out of his way
and then there would be other times where by you would be like where D and um nobody would know where he was and he
would be away for a few weeks Harry Jarvis would often disappear for long periods of time with a family unsure
about where he'd gone or when he'd be back I guess one of the most important times you know whereby I look back now
was my birthday I think it was like I was 12 or 13 at a time and Dad wasn't there and we didn't know
where he was again it just sort of resonates in terms of you know what sometimes it was
there sometimes it was fantastic and other times you just didn't know what you were going to get it was you know
jao and I by the mid 1990s 45-year-old Harry Jarvis was living in b gate Scotland
with his wife Carol and their four children he was living a double life but what was he hiding from his
family sometimes it would be for a few days sometimes it would be for a couple of weeks sometimes it would be for
longer and he would just disappear and he would just return to the to the family home as if it hadn't
happened at all when he did come back it would almost be like a a heat discussion
as to you know what's happened but despite the arguments and uncertainty of where he'd been Jarvis always want Carol
back around he disappeared for months and months and months at a time and would come back and you know Weedle his
way back in with her again profess his undying love for her he would make excuses that you know
it was the alcohol that caused him to disappear um when the reality was that he would meet people and sponge of them
until their money ran out and then go back to Carol and she always took him back
always while Jarvis was away from his wife he was spending time with other women Harry Jarvis was somebody who was
capable of going off and doing whatever he wanted to do at any given time and it
was clear that he had embarked in other relationships he was was clearly somebody who was capable of cheating on
his wife as well as infidelity Harry Jarvis also had a problem with alcohol which
had a further detrimental effect on his family life it did like a drink and you kind of knew and you would stay out his
Road quite a lot of the fam's resources ended up being spent across the counter of the off sales or the public house
Carol was you know forced to give him lots of money quite often and you know she would have to give him her money
just you know to make him stay keep him happy she herself firmly believed that marriage was for life and that women
would forgive their husbands for anything and Harry took advantage of that and took advantage of her her kind
nature her loving nature these incidents surrounding money and alcohol left lasting memories for
their children a lot of the the argument stemmed through money and when we were growing up in terms of you know Dad
maybe spending it on alcohol and and cigarettes rather than food and stuff yeah it was
difficult with Jarvis unable to hold down a job for long and going missing for months at a time it was Carol who
made sure that children were looked after mom always made sure that we had food on the table always had
clothes I think you know definitely a heart of gold rather than a pot of gold in in our purse if you
like yeah we never went without it came as a blow to the family when Carol's Health suddenly started to
decline and doctors tried to establish what was wrong with her mom started to get ill around about
96 so and what was she 34 35 um at the time I just remember her being really learic and sore muscles all the time and
he couldn't really figure it out for a good number of years the major problem was what was described as
fibromyalgia she seems to have been rendered very weak and as a consequence of her weakness she took to
bed we used to see her sort of lying down more maybe not being able to do as much physically mentally it was it was
tough on her and you know um I guess that didn't really help obviously with the whole dad situation and disappearing
and yeah difficult with Carol's health condition having such an effect on her ability to look after after herself
Harry Jarvis was forced to give up work permanently and become a full-time carer
for his wife so I think Dad I don't I don't know if it was by choice that he gave it up Mark to look after Mom Mom
did get quite upset about you know not being able to do stuff uh for herself because of her conditions Carol was
entitled to receive financial support he of saw this as an opportunity to control her even further
and you know it was money for him as well you know they were claiming disability benefits and it was a way for
him to basically just live off Carol because of her illness and she of course relied 100% on him he would have been
interested in looking at that situation and saying how can I benefit from this situation is there any way that this can
benefit me by 2009 Carol had been living with her debilitating illness for over a
decade with all the children having flown The Nest to either start their own families or study at University Carol
and Harry Jarvis were now living alone in their Bathgate home they'd all moved out and were
pursuing their own lives so it was mostly just Harry Jarvis and Carol Jarvis in the house and Harry would
attend to Carol he would assist her to use the toilet and would bring her food and perhaps most significantly he would
attend to her medication and much of the uh medical attention that was given to her was in
relation to her pain relief Carol relied on her seemingly caring husband for Round the Clock care but in reality
Jarvis was still up to his old tricks how Jarvis would from time to time just drop out of the picture all together and
would go off on missions of his own and when that happened the children would have to give
up whatever they were doing themselves and go and look after their mom we used to sort of you know speak to each other
as siblings and say like you know what like you know Dad's disappeared again the Jarvis children soon noticed
something wasn't quite right when their dad was home and giving their mom her medication Carol would be in bed
sleeping most of the day but it was a different story when they were in charge of giving her her
tablets she immediately sort of got better or she was up and about and looking for Dad whereas if Dad was there
she'd probably be sleeping if that makes sense it was almost like a an improvement that you could physically
see when you were when you were there caring for them and it was a a question which the children had as to why she
always seemed to be worse whilst in his care than in theirs the siblings knew there was something not right but they
were too scared of their dad to question him about it I think at the time although we
suspected that and we used to talk I don't think anybody would was kind of brave enough to to challenge him
and we just accepted it for for what it was in 2009 Harry Jarvis did another disappearing act none of his family knew
where he'd been but this time he didn't return alone he went on one of his walkabouts and returned to
Bathgate with Rita now Rita is an interesting character she was adopted by a really quite
wealthy uh businessman who had had a company which made pastry Rita had come into a significant
inheritance from her adopted parent to the sum of2 and2 million she had had since her
inheritance a series of what appeared to be unsuccessful relationships with men and somehow or other the money just
evaporated by the time that she met Harry Jarvis and they became involved with one another to a very substantial
extent the money had gone and then she met Harry she fell in love with him instantly and he promised
her that they would be together forever and she saw him as some sort of comfort blanket because you you she'd gone
through all that money she had nowhere to live she was homeless and Harry with her night and shining
armor I think that possibly Javis saw her and thought haha this is somebody who either may have some money
squirreled away or may be up for another inheritance with this family that she was involved in so he locked on to
her knowing that 54-year-old Rita hter might already have spent her inheritance didn't stop Jarvis from
fantasizing he was obsessed with riches and you know having lots of wealth and R
was perfect for him because you know he deliberately blanked out that she had squandered her money he had pound signs
you know in his eyes and that as far as he was concerned R would have more money
Millions more than he could ever dream of so he thinks well this really is a meal ticket into a new
world and at one point he even brags to the bid in his local pub that he's going
to bleed arita dry Jarvis had brought Rita into his life but he couldn't bring her into his home as his chronically ill
wife Carol was still there and it ended up in this absolutely ludicrous situation where Rita was living in
Jarvis's shed at the bottom of the garden literally all that was in there was some kind of awful filthy mattress
she was sleeping on the shed was basically just that a very small very basic shed dirty
damp there was a plastic bucket in the corner presumably for her Comfort during the night but apart from a cover or a
duv that and I think there maybe a couple of pillows that were in the shed there was nothing
else so Rita was basically kept in the shed while har Jarvis was living in the house with his ailen
wife but there was the promise that if we go through this shter amount of pain once Carol's out of the picture we've
got the house we've got everything this is what they were both working towards in an attempt to speed up proceedings
Harry Jarvis had begun sedating his wife so Carol was seemingly oblivious to the
fact that another woman was living at the end of the garden he had started to overdose Carol with some of the
medication that she had and that was certainly having an impact if she was aware that there was a woman living in
the shed just right outside her bedroom with she never said and never gave any indication to anybody that she was aware
of that Carol may not have known but the neighbors had started talking about the
unusual living arrangements on their street TI t a local gossip told us that you know neighbors knew there was a
woman living in the garden it seemed a bit of a tall tale at the start you know it's it's not something that you know
you would expect to hear but Jarvis and Rita didn't seem to mind the locals knowing about them he would
walk around time with her and you know openly affecting it Rita was said to have giggled like a school girl around
Jaris and the two of them you know quite openly flaunted their relationship Harry Jarvis was living a
double life a carer to his sick wife and a lover to a woman who was living in his
garden shed Jarvis knew he needed to ENT end it with either Carol or Rita but who
would he choose and how would he get out of the L triangle forever kimbery moved up to UNI I had
already moved out Kev had moved out soon and moved out so there was the opportunity for Dad to do that whereas I
think if one of us was still at home then that wouldn't have been a an option for him but the children still visited
their mom on a regular basis and were often around Bathgate on the 11th of September 2009 Graham Jarvis bumped into
his dad I had seen dad and he was a bit dazed you know and I always remember thinking I wonder what what was up with
him and he done as usual you know do you have a couple of pound and I was like no
I don't have changed cuz I knew again they would just spend it on drinks and cigarette you know from m point of view
I thought you know what I'm not doing it anymore on that occasion Harry Jarvis wasn't in town alone at the time Graham
didn't know who Rita was or her involvement with his father I remember physically seeing reer
a couple of steps behind him and she had a suitcase and I never really said anything about it I sort of asked you
know where's mom and he said oh she in the house sleeping I was like all right the weekend passed and grahe Jarvis had
planned to visit his mom on the Monday evening like he did every week but earlier in the day Graham called his
brother Kevin he's like I went around to the house earlier um and Mom wasn't there and I says what do you mean he
says I spoke to Dad and she said he said like he was she was our way out somewhere I was like doesn't make
sense he explained what that happened and he had went into to the house there was no sign
of mom and dad was acting dodgy and I just remember thinking like you look do you on Friday you know
there's something not quite right after sharing their concerns the brothers decided to go to the family home
together we went to to Bath and sort of knocked on the the door at first and Dad
came outside and even let us into the house and we said like Dad was going on like there's mom he was like oh we plan
on moving up to dund while she's up in Dand looking for the house and she'll be back
tomorrow now the son found that very odd because normally she required assistance
to do that and there was no word of who was assisting and father was there didn't really hang together very well in
the course of their investigations of the mother's whereabouts uh with the father he
provided additional and what seemed to be contradictory accounts Harry Jarvis changed his story a number of times
while trying to explain where his wife was I think the next excuse was that she was in rest bite care to give him a
break and I think you know he then said that she was thinking about not coming back and was going to stay up north and
she wanted to stay in a home all of the explanations that he gave for Carol's disappearance were implausible or
absolutely crazy they were not thought through with the story about Carol not adding up and Harry Jarvis refusing to
let his children into the house gram made the difficult decision to call the police it looked suspicious it sounded
suspicious so we phed the the police and the police came out and and dad was quite calm in the garden and he was you
know chatting away and sort of saying listen mom D it's fine and then the police said can we go in the house and
he was like yeah you can you can't the two officers you know enter the house say where where's uh Carol and
they search it and they find Rita hiding under the bed it almost defies belief but it gets
even funnier Jarvis then says to the officers oh that's my wife Carol however another officer who had
dealt with Jarvis several times and had met Carol because of a domestic call that she had been called out to at the
house knew instantly that the woman under the bed wasn't Carol Jarvis the Jarvis children were only now
becoming aware of their father's involvement with re they were now even Sher that something
was wrong with their mom what ultimately is frustrating is it Bo the police basically said us listen
because your mom's an adult we have to wait 24 hours and there's not much we can do sort of go home and we're all
like that's rubbish we weren't sure what was going on you know she just presume that she's missing and you need to get
to the bottom of it after an agonizing night of concern for her children the following day the
police officially recorded Carol Jarvis as a missing person I went down to police station at
report missing and one of the police officers said like we'll go around to the house and we'll try and look for
belongings or presume any clues right Graham went to the house with the officer and started to look for any
clues as to to where Carol may have gone one of the first things they saw at the
property was Carol's purse mom doesn't go anywhere about a p so you know there's something definitely wrong now
the discovery of Carol's purse meant the search for the missing 47y old was immediately stepped up it had been just
over one week since Graham Jarvis had last seen his mom so they sent forensics and scenes of
crimes officers and specialist search officers to look at the property and the garden to see if it would give any clue
as the cattle's whereabouts the police did carry out a search and that included a search of a
Cellar The Cellar below the living room in the house which was accessed from a hatch in the living room when the police
looked in that place very sadly they discovered the partially decomposed remains of what appeared to be female
person the space under the floorboards was known to the Jarvis children and it was almost like a cupboard door you
opened it you would go down and certainly as kids we used to go down there used to play like hide and seek
down there and stuff of that um and yeah it was quite a a big space the police had to let the Jaris children know that
a body had been found at their parents' home the police basically said listen we
found a a body we will do some you know checks you know to to formally identify it but it didn't take a genius to work
out that you know what it was mom you know I just felt felt sick i' just been sick you're
in shock and almost like what's going on like what's happened Carol's body had been wrapped in a duvet and bound with
packing tape so it was clear to police that she'd been placed there by somebody attention turned to Harry Jarvis but
nobody knew where he was Jarvis and Rita had disappeared detectives needed to act
fast to find the man so used to disappearing following the discovery of Carol Jarvis's body under the
floorboards of her house police wanted to talked to her husband Harry Jarvis the 59-year-old had gone on the run with
his lover Rita and the police needed to find them fast Jarvis and Rita hter run they take off from bargate and they
go to Perth where they stay in a BNB even more bizarrely they leave the BNB without
paying which infuriates the owners of the bed and breakfast they were staying in who report them to the police and
they described them and of course their descriptions exactly match Harry Jarvis and Rita Hiser the
police were able to trace Jarvis and Rita using CCTV when the pair arrived in Edinburgh
they were arrested and taken in for questioning the police were sure that Harry Jarvis had murdered his wife but
their investigation hit a stumbling block when they tried to ascertain how Carol had
died the state of decomposition was such that the pathologist who carried out the
postmortem examination could not uh um identify what the mechanism of death had been what was the cause was it something
organic was it some trauma what whatever it was it could not be ascertained what
it was two postmortem failed to establish a cause of death and police were really struggling to put a case
against Harry together when Harry was interviewed about his wife's death he gave an unusual explanation when police
asked what had happened to Carol Harry said that she had had a fit during a sex game gone
wrong actually said that she couldn't get out the fit and then she she passed away and I think that was his only
explanation ever Jarvis told the police that he was so grief stucken by Carol's death that he couldn't bear to part with
her so he put her under the floorboards to stay close to her and able to establish a cause of
death it was hard for the police to prove that Harry Jarvis was lying about what had happened to
Carol but the search of his house had uncovered some love letters written by Jarvis and
R it was quite an odd relationship in that they would write love letters to each other even though she was living 10
ft away in the garden shed the notes that Harry and Rita shared with each other basically there was a usual um you
know I love you I miss you we'll be together forever thing as investigating officers read through the letters one
note in particular caught their attention he writes to her drugs doing their job the
overmedication of Carol it's just taking longer than I thought we'll be together soon in
Paradise Harry was making it clear that he wanted to be away from his wife he would somehow dispose of her and he
would go with r and those were the messages he was giving Rita and at the same time he was acting in a manner
towards his wife which was not in his wife's interest and detrimental to her health the Jaris children had noticed
previously that their mom's condition improved when they were looking after her and these letters were proof that
Harry Jarvis had been drugging his wife the police were able to use this in the case against him and take him to court
for the murder of Carol Jarvis Harry Jarvis and Rita hter were charged by the police together with the
murder of Carl Jarvis and Associated charges also R's lawyers applied for Rita to be tried separately to Jarvis
and this application was granted by the court in early 2011 Harry's trial commenced at
Edinburgh High Court the prosecution team knew it would be difficult to persuade the jury as all of the evidence
in the case was merely circumstantial we have prepared by the police at the time to say that listen
there's there's a possibility that it might not go our way we would advise L and you know we don't really feel 100%
confident in this Harry jvis maintained his story that Carol had died from a fit
during sex and that he was not guilty of the murder but the Love Letters proved to be his downfall the notes were a
significant piece of evidence because it did indicate that Harry had malicious intent towards his
wife I remember the jury's eyes widening when when that evidence was led it seemed to me it plainly had an impact on
them har Jarvis was seen by the jury for the callous killer that he was and on the 30th of March
2011 they found him guilty of the murder of Carol Jarvis Jarvis was sentenced to
life imprisonment after a fairly lengthy child in view of the gravity of the crime that he'd been convicted of he
must serve that minimum term of 15 years in her own trial Rita hter was acquitted
of Carol's murder as there was in sufficient evidence of her having any involvement in the killing however her
DNA had been found on the packing tape that Carol's body was wrapped in suggesting that she had helped Jarvis
hide the body under the floorboards on the evidence put to the jury Rita was found instead guilty of attempting to
defeat the ends of justice and was sentenced to 4 and a half years in prison Harry
Jarvis was the main perpetrator Ator in fact the sole perpetrator of the murder but that R had become embroiled with him
and that Jarvis's manipulation had got her into that situation he was the one person who really was in charge of what
was going on Harry Jarvis was sent to addwell prison just 5 and a half miles from the
home he shared with Carol and their children [Music] for their kids the verdict was
bittersweet they gave the guilty verdict so we were kind of delighted and I guess
you know the the after that you you then start to sort of have the the sort of feeling of do
know what you still dad I feel like you know and again it's that mixed emotions I feel like whereby you're on a high but
then you're thinking to yourself you know what like he's so Dad so it's difficult on the 20th of April
2017 6 years into his life sentence Harry Jarvis reported pains in his chest to prison staff he collapsed in his cell
and attempts to resuscitate him proved to be fruitless it was like half 12 I went and got the kids from school as I
came around the corner I clocked the police car sitting there and just something inside me was like I
know why they're there they go out the car I just said please please tell me he's dead and
then that was it the children of that marriage between Harry and Carol Jarvis were in the most
awful situation they had such a dilemma of trust they had a dilemma of loyalty because the her mom had gone and their
dad had possibly been responsible for that but he was still their dad for gra the pain of his mother's murder still
affects him yeah I can remember it like it was yesterday like down to the second
I always you know drive past the house and have a we look or I'll sit there for 5 minutes I always think to myself
somebody's going to one day come out and go who are you cuz you keep appearing in
your car and sitting there think it doesn't get any y by lying about the murder Harry Jarvis left his
children with questions that will never be answered I think the frustrating thing is we'll never know as well you
know what happened the Hari Jarvis was somebody who acted for the sole benefit really of Harry Jarvis he was a person
clearly who thought only of himself he has achieved nothing except killing an innocent
vulnerable wife who'd born in four children and loyally stood by him despite the womanizing despite the
drinking despite him disappearing despite him stealing the disability allowance and the carers allowance if
there is a word for Jarvis Beyond monster I would say it was Despicable his motivation for everything throughout
his life was money from his you know fraudulent crimes deception everything Harry Jarvis did was motivated by
money on the face of it you know Dad didn't read over plan and to sort of live together and rather than Dad just
doing easy thing and splitting up with Mom he's obviously for you know what the best way out of it is to take M out the
equation by hook or by Kook I know they say breaking up up hard to do and stuff but surely there's an easier way out
then sort of um killing somebody Jarvis was a callous killer with no empathy for his wife or children
after drugging and murdering Carol he hid her body under the floorboards and went on the run with his lover before
spinning lies about what had happened a selfish and narcissistic manipulator Harry Jarvis will be remembered as one
of the world's most evil killers [Music]

When 47-year-old Carol Jarvis disappeared, her husband Harry told their friends and family, including the couple’s children, that she’s simply on a little vacation to Dundee. Detectives weren’t convinced.
