[STUDIO MUSIC] [THUNDER RUMBLING] [INTRIGUING MUSIC] DAMIAN: On the afternoon of the 21st of July, 2023,
West Midlands Police received a call from a friend of Sharon Gordon, who had gone round to her home address and found her
lying at the bottom of the stairs, covered in blood, and apparently not breathing.
[MUSIC BECOMES SUSPENSEFUL] First, responding officers were greeted with quite a distressing scene, with blood all
across the floor, up the walls, but it was impossible to say at that point how Sharon had come to suffer those injuries and die.
RHIAN: I've just lived through absolute hell, all because of the decision that this man made.
REPORTER: This video, provided by a neighbor, shows a threatening man. He's seen walking past a home, holding an ax.
[INDISTINCT SHOUTING] [INTRIGUING MUSIC] DAMIAN: The first responders spoke with Sharon's friends
at the scene, and they told the officers that, because they couldn't get hold of her,
they decided to come round to see if she was OK. The officers also asked them if they knew anything
about what might have happened or if this came as a surprise to them. Sharon was still in the prime of her life,
but she could have fell down the stairs. She could have suffered some medical episode.
It could be a random attack, or it could be because someone has been disturbed in the process
of committing a crime. There are a number of different options that could have resulted in Sharon dying,
and it's really important that we consider them all and gather evidence that doesn't preclude any of them.
Sharon's friends told us they had no idea who would have had the motive to kill her or attack her, and we had no evidence
or reason to doubt that. [INTRIGUING MUSIC] RHIAN: I received a phone call on my mobile.
I was working from home at the time. And my mom's best friend called me to say, we need
to go around to your mom's. I literally just rushed off the phone and ran around the corner
to my mom's house. It was cordoned off, and I was trying to go into the house. And obviously, I was being restrained,
and I was just like, why? Why can't I go in? To be honest, it was just shock. There was no instant thoughts of anything other than,
what's going on? [SIRENS SOUNDING] DANIEL: The residents were standing outside. Some of them were looking out the windows,
just peeking through the windows. When we talked to a couple of the neighbors, they all expressed how much of a lovely woman she was.
They all liked her. She was a known member of the community. The sense of shock and confusion
was definitely the biggest emotion that was running through the area. [TENSE MUSIC]
DAMIAN: I attended the scene with the crime scene coordinator, and we conducted a walkthrough.
[OMINOUS MUSIC] There were signs of some diluted blood in the hallway, which could have been caused by someone
trying to dispose of evidence. Secondly, there was a significant amount of blood spatter in and around where Sharon was lying.
At this stage, my experience taught me that it was more likely than not that Sharon had been killed, but I needed
to confirm that evidentially. [SIRENS SOUNDING] NARRATOR: To corroborate his theory.
DI Forrest calls a forensic specialist to look at blood spatter in Sharon's home.
- The scientist attended and gave me a report that same day. [INTRIGUING MUSIC] In that report, she explained that Sharon
had been hit by more than one blow on multiple occasions, and due to the repeated nature and the different vectors,
it was clear that we were dealing with an assault on Sharon, and that we had a murderer
that we needed to find. [SENTIMENTAL MUSIC] RHIAN: Growing up, me and my mom were inseparable.
We were literally always together. My mom's personality was very strong. She was full of conviction.
She was just one of the strongest women that I know. But she was very loving, caring,
giving, friendly, and fun. My son was the light of my mother's life. She absolutely adored him.
She spent loads of time with him. She would spend more time with him if she could.
They both lit up when they saw each other. Are you watching Nanny water the grass?
I always used to say my son loved my mom more than he loved me. He always wanted to be at Nanny's.
Nanny, Nanny, Nanny. And my mom was the same. Everything was about him. [LAUGHS]
- [GURGLES] - You enjoyed that, didn't you? [THOUGHTFUL MUSIC] DAMIAN: Because we had no suspect for killing Sharon,
and we didn't know when, if ever, we would identify one, I tasked my team to obtain as much CCTV footage
for the relevant time period as possible-- also, house-to-house enquiries, speaking
to the neighbors in the local community to see if they'd heard any noises or seen anything unusual, if they could offer
any evidence about people who may have a motive against Sharon. The other thing which was key for us
is trying to understand the last person who would have seen Sharon alive, so we can get an idea of what state she was in at that point.
And also, it will allow us to narrow down our enquiries around trying to trace CCTV and witness evidence.
[THOUGHTFUL MUSIC] In the course of the inquiry, we spoke to a lot of people, friends and family
of Sharon who knew her really well, and you gain a picture of what Sharon was like.
She was a Jehovah Witness. And as we looked more into her life, we saw that that faith was a massive part of her life.
RHIAN: My mom wasn't actually raised a Jehovah's Witness. She became a Jehovah's Witness, and she was introduced
to it by her elder sister. My mom took her faith very, very seriously. Her goal was to make sure that she lived by the vow
that she took to her god. My mom was highly regarded within the Jehovah's Witness
this community. She did a lot of work with young ones. She held a very strong position in people's hearts and minds,
and that's because of the type of woman that she was. [INTRIGUING MUSIC] KATE: Jehovah's Witnesses call themselves the truth,
and they call anybody outside that religion worldly. As far as they're concerned, they are God's chosen people.
It's very much all about working towards being the best Christian you can possibly be in order to survive
God's war at Armageddon. And this belief comes from the Book of Revelation. The Jehovah's Witnesses believe there is only one judge,
and that is Jehovah God. So the worldly system, which is what they call it, the secular justice system, will be abided by,
but it's actually the rules within the congregation from the elders that's probably more important to the
Witnesses themselves. [SIRENS SOUNDING] [INTRIGUING MUSIC] DAMIAN: I directed my officers to make contact
with the local Jehovah's Witness community, because it was clear to me how close-knit they were,
and I wanted to understand if they could offer us any evidence that could assist us
with understanding what had happened and who was responsible. We spoke to various members of the community,
and whilst they were able to tell us a lot about Sharon and her life, unfortunately we weren't
able to learn any information that helped us understand who would attack Sharon.
People couldn't believe that this had happened to Sharon because they knew her. They knew the life that she led.
They knew the strong moral compass that she had and just how unlikely it was that she would be
involved in any sort of crime. [THOUGHTFUL MUSIC] NARRATOR: To paint a clearer picture of Sharon's movements
in the hours before she died, DI Forrest speaks with her builder, Peter Norgrove.
He'd been working on her house extension that day and is thought to be the last person to see her alive.
DAMIAN: Peter told us that he was conducting building work at Sharon's home address.
He'd been building a lean-to extension for her. He had retrained as a builder during the COVID pandemic,
so this was the first, real, big job that he'd taken on. We established that he had last seen her
on the Thursday afternoon, approximately 24 hours prior to Sharon's friends calling us.
He told us that he'd left the address at about 3 o'clock or just before in the afternoon,
because he was going with his wife to collect his children from school. Peter was not an immediate suspect to me.
There was nothing in Peter's history and nothing from the witness evidence or the forensic evidence
that we'd gathered that suggested that Peter was the person responsible for Sharon's death.
NARRATOR: Police now have a 24-hour window in which Sharon could have been killed, but
still no sense of who did it. [PHONE RINGING] DAMIAN: We had no suspects at this stage.
There was no one immediately apparent who would appear to have a motive for killing Sharon,
would appear to have the sort of history or disposition that would suggest it's the type of thing they would do.
[INTRIGUING MUSIC] NARRATOR: When the autopsy report comes in, it reveals her devastating injuries.
- It's very difficult to provide an exact time of death from a forensic post-mortem report,
so we don't have an exact time that Sharon died. But the post-mortem report told us
that Sharon had suffered repeated blunt force blows to the head with a blunt object.
This was key to us because it ruled out the idea that it could have been accidental.
[THOUGHTFUL MUSIC] I took the time to revisit the scene. It's important that you come back and
approach it with fresh eyes. What it showed me is that there hadn't been an untidy search
conducted where someone in desperation was rooting through documents, looking for things to steal.
There were still valuables in place. So that suggested that someone Sharon had known had killed her
and that the motive wasn't perhaps to break in there and steal from her. It was important just to establish the facts
and see if the motive was laid bare from there. [INTRIGUING MUSIC] We identified that there was home surveillance equipment
at the front of the address, which covered the drive around by the front door, and we could see that there was a camera
at the back of the address near to the back door, which covered the patio and garden area.
But it wasn't immediately clear whether that had been recording at the time of the offense.
NARRATOR: Frustratingly, the security video is stored in the cloud, and police don't have Sharon's password.
DAMIAN: We couldn't immediately access the footage. Sharon had the details, and unfortunately, we couldn't
find them anywhere else. [CALM MUSIC] RHIAN: The memories that my son has in this
garden with his nanny, it's-- you know, they're unforgettable. They'd always be in the garden.
She'd have him on her hip or just playing. Once somebody's gone, the last photo that you ever took together or the last video, the last voice
note and things like that, it comes to a point, like, there's no more. You don't get any more of that.
And that is really sad because then whatever you've got, that's it. Look at the love between them.
The both of them, they're so cute. NARRATOR: Believing that Sharon was killed by someone
she knew, DI Forrest looks more closely at the people around her, starting with her builder,
Peter Norgrove. [THOUGHTFUL MUSIC] DAMIAN: We conducted examinations of some of Peter's computers and equipment.
Separately, we conducted inquiries at Sharon's home address, looking for relevant paperwork
or materials. Peter was conducting building work at Sharon's home address. The work had been predicted to last a couple of months,
but it had carried on for well over a year, and this clearly had caused frustrations on both sides.
It was quite clear that there appeared to be very little trust and respect on both sides of that relationship
as the building work went on. [INTRIGUING TONES] RHIAN: Mom was introduced to Peter,
as he was in the same congregation as Mom's close friend. [THOUGHTFUL MUSIC] I know for a fact that my mom would
have felt that she could trust this person because of them sharing a faith. [MUSIC INTENSIFIES]
And she also thought that if there was, for any reason, any issues or problems, that she could seek advice and support
from ones within the congregation such as the elders. [INTRIGUING MUSIC] KATE: Everybody knows what everybody else does
for a living within the congregations, and it's extremely common for services to be provided within the community.
There's this big element of trust that Witnesses are expected to be truthful and
honest and reliable. And as you are all God's chosen people, then why would you not rely on each other's services and skill sets?
RHIAN: It's hard to put a time on when things went bad between my mom and Peter.
All I can say is she was given time scales, and they by no means were met. It was taking longer than it was meant to take.
The workmanship wasn't to the standard that she thought it would be. He'd bitten off a lot more than he could chew,
and he wasn't able to do the job that he took on and was paid for. [THOUGHTFUL MUSIC]
NARRATOR: Sharon's house extension, which Peter told her would take six weeks, had taken 15 months,
and construction still wasn't finished. KATE: If Sharon was complaining about Peter's workmanship,
then potentially he'd be quite angry about that. Jehovah's Witnesses are a massively,
highly-controlled religion. Outspoken women in the Jehovah's Witnesses are not deemed in a favorable light.
Men can go into positions of power. Women can't. Maybe, to Peter, he may have thought
that she should be subordinate to him as a man, and that potentially could have been very triggering for him.
[MYSTERIOUS MUSIC] SOHOM: It's a pressure cooker situation. So you've got Peter, who's probably
getting quite irritated by Sharon's repeated complaints. He probably expects a degree of reverence and submission
from Sharon, coming from the church, which he's not getting. And then you've got Sharon getting
increasingly frustrated that her complaints are being ignored. So it's almost like this vicious cycle.
15 months is a long time, and I think we can understand how with this situation of complaints,
and them being dismissed and nothing being resolved, how the frustrations and the tensions
can really escalate over time. RHIAN: My mom sought advice when things started to not go well with Peter.
I know that she sought advice from the elders, but unfortunately nothing was done.
I knew it was stressing her out. I literally could see the situation taking its toll
on her mentally, physically. I could see it on her face. SOHOM: I think it's fair to assume that Peter would have
actually been quite fearful of Sharon spreading her complaints across the Jehovah's Witness community
because it's a small, niche group. So his reputation could have spread quite quickly of being
untrustworthy or unreliable. And also, he's a new builder. He's only just recently trained in this field,
so he's probably got quite a small client base. So it could potentially damage his future financial earnings.
[INTRIGUING MUSIC] NARRATOR: The search for video surveillance pays off. Sifting through hours of footage,
police identify one camera that points directly at Peter Norgrove's house. - This is Peter's home.
So I can see Peter Norgrove's car has just pulled onto his drive, and you can see here that Peter's running up his drive
and into his address. Shortly, we'll see Peter re-emerge. You can see him in the porch.
He's wearing different clothing, so he's clearly ran inside and changed his clothes.
And he's pulling his shoes on in such a rush that he actually jumps over his front lawn wall and drives off.
That is where we identified a discrepancy. We'd already taken an account from him,
and that account said, I left Sharon's at a reasonable time and drove over to meet my wife to pick up the children.
Well, he left Sharon's later than he said, in a rush, sped home, ran into the address, changed his clothes,
and then ran back out again to meet his wife. Why would she lie about such a thing
unless she had something to hide? [INTRIGUING MUSIC, SIRENS SOUNDING] NARRATOR: Police officers head to the builder's house.
DAMIAN: I decided it was necessary to obtain the clothing that Peter had been wearing the last time
he'd been at Sharon's address. We learned that Peter had put the clothing he'd been wearing
at that time into the wash, as he told us that he'd spilt some things on them, and there was some staining on it--
[THOUGHTFUL MUSIC] --which he said was as a result of him spilling cordial on himself.
The staining was reddish in color. Additionally, Peter commented that he'd gone straight
to his children's school. But his wife said, oh, don't you remember, Peter? You were late because you had to pop home.
So with all that combined, I said, arrest him. [SOMBER MUSIC] RHIAN: It might have been a couple of days
after that the leading investigator, Damian Forrest, said, it's murder. It was just absolute shock.
Looking back, I think we all had that inkling that it could have been Peter, but we all
also put it out of our minds and thought, oh, no, it can't be. So maybe it was a robbery.
There's no explaining. There's no understanding around it. It's just shocking. KELLY-ANN: Sharon could have been anybody.
We all have builders. We all have workmen. We all have plumbers, electricians come into our homes. And you trust them.
You have to. They're there to do a job. But at the same time, you don't know who they are,
and you don't know what could happen. And unfortunately for Sharon, in that one-in-a-million case, she's ended
up being a murder victim here. NARRATOR: Although DI Forrest believes Peter Norgrove killed Sharon, he needs
to build his case against him. [THOUGHTFUL MUSIC] DAMIAN: We had a motive for Norgrove lying to us,
and that motive was to prevent us recovering evidence or uncovering his lies that would cast him
as a suspect in the matter. But he doesn't fit a traditional profile of someone who would kill someone using force, someone
who would attack someone. Additionally, he had no criminal history. So what we didn't have as clear a motive for
was why he would kill Sharon. [THOUGHTFUL MUSIC] RHIAN: For the Jehovah's Witness community,
it was utter, dumbfounded shock. I feel that after the shock, it was also very much a lockdown.
What do we do here? I do feel as though they were very concerned about how the reputation of the organization
itself would look. KATE: I would say, from being a former Jehovah's Witness myself, that it's very rare that Jehovah's Witnesses
murder other people. [INTRIGUING MUSIC] Jehovah's Witnesses don't agree with violence-- full stop.
Most are law-abiding. That is important because there's a moral code that they go by from the Bible.
Within the community, I would imagine all of her fellow Witness friends, family members would have been so shocked and so saddened
by her death. But the Jehovah's Witness organization as a whole have a reputation at stake, and they
have people who are meant to be law-abiding, meek, and mild. So it probably would have been encouraged
not to have been talked about. NARRATOR: With Peter Norgrove in custody, police receive an unexpected call from his wife.
[MYSTERIOUS MUSIC] DAMIAN: It was very unusual to have a wife of someone arrested
for murder contact us, but I have to give credit to her for doing so. When she had been thinking about the events
over the last couple of days, she remembered that after they had picked the children up
from school, they had attended another family address, and Peter had put something in the bin.
They had gone to that bin and recovered the item and found it to be blood-stained sponges and
other such things, wrapped within some home delivery packaging that bore the name of Sharon Gordon.
NARRATOR: Police head to Norgrove's home to recover the bloodstained items retrieved from the waste
bin by his wife's family. DAMIAN: This led us to conduct a review of the home surveillance footage that was present there.
[INTRIGUING MUSIC] As he arrives, he pulls up outside the house. You see that whilst family members come and speak
to the occupants of the car, his family, he actually goes to that bin that contained
the gloves and clothing. This forensic evidence was a crucial element to this investigation.
NARRATOR: DI Forrest broadens the search to all of Peter's family and gathers security camera footage from his mother-in-law's address.
DAMIAN: We were actually able to see that on the morning after Sharon had been killed,
Peter had gone back to this family address and deposited something into the shed, which
contained hundreds of tools. I sought the assistance of a specially-trained police
sniffer dog that can scent blood. The dog searched the shed and indicated that it could
smell blood on a lump hammer. Forensically, we were able to identify that Sharon's blood was present on the hammer
and that her blood was present on the clothing that he'd been wearing when he left the address.
Because of that, we were able to speak with the Crown Prosecution Service and charge him with murder.
KATE: Jehovah's Witnesses have an evening meeting on a Thursday, so the fact that Sharon was killed on a Thursday
could be important in the fact that if she had perhaps said she was going to tell the elders that evening
at the Kingdom Hall, then maybe he would have been really scared that she would honor
her promise of doing that. [THOUGHTFUL MUSIC] If she had gone to them, then he may well have
been reprimanded in some way. And in the Jehovah's Witness community, that could lead to being removed from the religion.
So it's really high stakes. He may have been really angry at the power that she had there that could have affected his standing and
the potential for him to lose that promise of everlasting life and death at Armageddon
would have been potentially his greatest fear, as it is for many Jehovah's Witnesses.
NARRATOR: Police finally get access to the password-protected footage from the video cameras
at Sharon's home. [INTRIGUING MUSIC] DAMIAN: Receiving this footage, on top of all the evidence we'd
already gathered, was crucial to the inquiry because what it allowed us to do is understand Peter and the actions
that he took at the scene. And it allowed us to understand his mindset. We formed a timeline of the events that
happened at Sharon's house on the day of her murder, and we could see that Sharon was at home, working,
when she was visited by some of her friends. She was in the back garden with them,
laughing and joking, talking about the ordinary things and bits of gossip that friends do talk about.
All at the same time, she had a builder in her address. That was Peter Norgrove.
Her friends left the address, and Sharon was left there alone with Peter. NARRATOR: Shortly before 2:00 PM,
Peter is seen in the garden. He then goes inside where Sharon is now, working from home.
DAMIAN: The time stamp was crucial to us in relation to allowing it to lock into the evidence we'd already gathered.
So on the screen time of 14:02.55, you can see that there's no one in the back garden,
but there has been some sort of activation on the camera. [SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC] The home surveillance footage was motion-activated,
and at one point, it would appear that a motion outside-- the wind, the clothes on the washing line,
activated it at the same time as a high-pitched piercing scream could be heard. Police think that that's Sharon screaming
out during the attack. NARRATOR: 19 minutes later, Peter comes outside and can be seen packing up.
DAMIAN: In this clip now, you can see Peter Norgrove. He's moving with a pile of things under his arm,
putting them into the back of the car. Peter, going about his business in the aftermath,
did not appear like a person who was immediately regretting what had happened. In this clip, Peter's walking back towards that front door,
nonchalantly whistling when he knows that lying on the other side of that door is Sharon, who is most likely fighting for her life
at that point. Even if there had been any other reason for how Sharon had come by her injuries,
and Peter had tried to help, or it had been an accident, then he would have had an opportunity
to tell us about that. [SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC] He was moving calmly. He didn't appear to be distressed.
He didn't at any point say there'd been an accident or that something had happened, or
he didn't mean to do anything, or that someone else had been in the address. What it showed us was that his actions were not
the actions of someone who had been involved in an accidental death. NICK: My name is Nick Barreiro.
I'm a former police detective and a certified audio-video forensic analyst. If we had only looked at this video one time,
it looks very ordinary. There's nothing remarkable at first glance. So that's why it's extremely important
that we use critical viewing techniques, and we watch these videos repeatedly, very carefully, to make sure we're not missing anything.
The benefit of this video being recorded by a home surveillance system is that we also have a timestamp for these images,
and we know that he left the house about five hours after he arrived. And during that five hours, these red stains
appeared on his pants. This is the footage from the backyard. He's not really acting like he'd just killed someone.
He's acting very nonchalant. He's going about his day. He's cleaning up his tools.
But if we take a closer look, if we zoom in, and we make some adjustments to the brightness,
to the contrast and the saturation, we can actually see there are bright red stains on his pants.
And then if we look at a different angle when he's leaving, we go from this-- to this, revealing bright red stains.
It's quite disturbing to realize what had just happened, but he's still going about his business
so casually with blood all over him. [MYSTERIOUS MUSIC] Since he was doing work on this house,
he must have been aware that there was cameras. This is potentially a very good example
of a murderer who knows that they're actually being recorded, to deceive and make
it look like he was completely innocent and using that to their advantage. DAMIAN: The enhanced video footage
further zeroed in on Peter and allowed us to show a forensic link between Peter's clothing
and the injuries that had occurred to Sharon. What happened in the address, we couldn't visually say,
but upon a review of the evidence, we see Peter moving to and from the address. A scream can be heard inside, and we see him with a hammer.
We see him moving about with bloodstained clothing before driving off, visiting his home address to change
his clothes, later lying about that to us, and then going to pick up his children before moving
to a family address where he disposed of evidence he knew would link him to the murder
of Sharon Gordon. [THOUGHTFUL MUSIC] NARRATOR: Peter Norgrove is charged with Sharon Gordon's murder.
He pleads guilty, avoiding trial. Six months after the killing, he appears in court for sentencing.
Journalist Kelly-Ann Kiernan follows the case. KELLY-ANN: It's unusual in the British courts.
Most people want to have their day in court. They want to try the evidence and see what they
can do to get out of things. [SOMBER MUSIC] I'm not sure why. Maybe because the weight of the evidence against him
was so strong. They had the CCTV. They had the murder weapon. I remember the judge saying that the murder
was brutal and savage. I mean, anybody who'd been hit over the head eight times with a hammer, it's going to be brutal and savage.
What an awful way for someone to die. And Norgrove didn't seem affected by that.
DAMIAN: It's always been his case that he cannot actually remember killing Sharon.
I would find that very convenient, and it perhaps offers Peter the opportunity to admit to what he's done without having
to explain or take responsibility for what he's done. SOHOM: Peters claimed that he had absolutely no memory
of the killing whatsoever can be linked to a psychological phenomena known as dissociative amnesia.
This is when an individual is in such an aroused, hyper state that they can't recall or record
memories of the actual event itself, and it can either be a partial or a full memory lapse.
I am somewhat skeptical about whether he was suffering from dissociative amnesia
for a couple of reasons. Firstly, because his behavior at the time was very nonchalant.
He didn't seem in this hyper-aroused state. And also, his behavior afterwards was very normal.
I would imagine that somebody who's woken up from this confused, fugue state, covered in blood,
would be worried. They would investigate what had just happened, and there's no evidence that Peter did that.
[THOUGHTFUL MUSIC] NARRATOR: Peter Norgrove is sentenced to life in prison for killing Sharon Gordon, with a minimum of 15 years.
DAMIAN: Peter has never shown any remorse for this crime. It's perhaps telling that the judge, when sentencing Peter,
commented on the difference between regret and remorse. One can regret their actions, perhaps
for the consequences that they brought on, without having remorse for what those actions are.
And I think that very much applies to Peter. RHIAN: I couldn't and wouldn't say that there's something
that the Jehovah's Witnesses could have done to stop Peter's actions. We are all individuals.
We can say we align with any faith or way of life, but each individual is going to do that completely
different to the next. His actions proved that he was not a true Jehovah's Witness
at heart. DAMIAN: I don't know for certain the reason that Peter had for attacking Sharon.
We will never know for certain because Peter refuses to share anything else with us.
KELLY-ANN: I think he was out of his depth. He went to build an extension for Sharon
and had no idea what he was doing, and just didn't know how to back out of it. What an awful way to just not say,
I don't know what I'm doing. DAMIAN: I don't know if Peter Norgrove understands the damage that he caused when
he murdered Sharon Gordon. Sharon's family suffered a devastating trauma that unfortunately I don't think we'll
ever recede from their lives. [SOMBER MUSIC] RHIAN: The impact on me and my family
after what he has done and taken away from us is undescribable. He stripped me and my family of what seems like everything.
Just the fact that she's no longer around, just the fact that my kids no longer have
a nanny in their lives, I've not been able to just deal with that. I've just lived through absolute hell
